We show that functors like algebraic $K$-theory (such as unitary or symplectic $K$-functors), as well as the higher Grothendieck--Witt groups, possess the local constancy condition for Henselian valuation rings. Namely, taken with finite coefficients, these functors send canonical residue maps into isomorphisms. This statement holds in cases of both equal and mixed characteristics. The proof is based on a slight modification of Suslin's methods. In particular, we use his notion of universal homotopy.
A quadratic form over a Henselian-valued field of arbitrary residue characteristic is tame if it becomes hyperbolic over a tamely ramified extension. The Witt group of tame quadratic forms is shown to be canonically isomorphic to the Witt group of graded quadratic forms over the graded ring associated to the filtration defined by the valuation, hence also isomorphic to a direct sum of copies of the Witt group of the residue field indexed by the value group modulo 2.
We study the algebraic $K$-theory and Grothendieck-Witt theory of proto-exact categories, with a particular focus on classes of examples of $\mathbb{F}_1$-linear nature. Our main results are analogues of theorems of Quillen and Schlichting, relating the $K$-theory or Grothendieck-Witt theories of proto-exact categories defined using the (hermitian) $Q$-construction and group completion.
We introduce a general framework to unify several variants of twisted topological $K$-theory. We focus on the role of finite dimensional real simple algebras with a product-preserving involution, showing that Grothendieck-Witt groups provide interesting examples of twisted $K$-theory. These groups are linked with the classification of algebraic vector bundles on real algebraic varieties.
We show that the higher Grothendieck-Witt groups, a.k.a. algebraic hermitian K-groups, are represented by an infinite orthogonal Grassmannian in the A1-homotopy category of smooth schemes over a regular base for which 2 is a unit in the ring of regular functions. We also give geometric models for various P1- and S1-loop spaces of hermitian K-theory.
Grothendieck-Witt spectra represent higher Grothendieck-Witt groups and higher Hermitian K-theory in particular. A description of the Grothendieck-Witt spectrum of a finite dimensional projective bundle $\mathbb{P}(\mathcal{E})$ over a base scheme $X$ is given in terms of the Grothendieck-Witt spectra of the base, using the dg category of strictly perfect complexes, provided that $X$ is a scheme over $\text{Spec }\mathbb{Z}[1/2]$ and satisfies the resolution property, e.g. if $X$ has an ample family of line bundles.
The cancellation theorem for Grothendieck-Witt-correspondences and Witt-correspondences between smooth varieties over an infinite prefect field $k$, $char k \neq 2$, is proved, the isomorphism $$Hom_{\mathbf{DM}^\mathrm{GW}_\mathrm{eff}}(A^\bullet,B^\bullet) \simeq Hom_{\mathbf{DM}^\mathrm{GW}_\mathrm{eff}}(A^\bullet(1),B^\bullet(1)),$$ for $A^\bullet,B^\bullet\in \mathbf{DM}^\mathrm{GW}_\mathrm{eff}(k)$ in the category of effective Grothendieck-Witt-motives constructed in \cite{AD_DMGWeff} is obtained (and similarly for Witt-motives). This implies that the canonical functor $Σ_{\mathbb G_m^{\…
We construct a Grothendieck-Witt space for any stable infinity category with duality. If we apply our construction to perfect complexes over a commutative ring in which 2 is invertible we recover the classical Grothendieck-Witt space. Our Grothendieck-Witt space is a grouplike E-infinity space which is part of a genuine C_2-spectrum, the connective real K-theory spectrum.
Let k be a perfect field of characteristic different from two. We show that the filtration on the Grothendieck-Witt group GW(k) induced by the slice filtration for the sphere spectrum in the motivic stable homotopy category is the I-adic filtration, where I is the augmentation ideal in GW(k).
We prove localization and Zariski-Mayer-Vietoris for higher Grothendieck-Witt groups, alias hermitian $K$-groups, of schemes admitting an ample family of line-bundles. No assumption on the characteristic is needed, and our schemes can be singular. Along the way, we prove additivity, fibration and approximation theorems for the hermitian $K$-theory of exact categories with weak equivalences and duality.
We establish new structures on Grothendieck-Witt rings, including a GW(k)-module structure on the unit group GW(k)^x and a presentation of \ul{GW}^x as an infinite Gm-loop sheaf. Even though our constructions are motivated by speculations in stable A1-homotopy theory, our arguments are purely algebraic.
We study the algebraic $K$-theory and Grothendieck-Witt theory of proto-exact categories of vector bundles over monoid schemes. Our main results are the complete description of the algebraic $K$-theory space of an integral monoid scheme $X$ in terms of its Picard group $\operatorname{Pic}(X)$ and pointed monoid of regular functions $Γ(X, \mathcal{O}_X)$ and a description of the Grothendieck-Witt space of $X$ in terms of an additional involution on $\operatorname{Pic}(X)$. We also prove space-level projective bundle formulae in both settings.
We develop a higher semiadditive version of Grothendieck-Witt theory. We then apply the theory in the case of a finite field to study the higher semiadditive structure of the $K(1)$-local sphere at the prime $2$. As a further application, we compute and clarify certain power operations in the homotopy of the $K(1)$-local sphere.
The category of effective Grothendieck-Witt-motives $\mathbf{DM}^{GW}_{\mathrm{eff},-}(k)$ (and Witt-motives $\mathbf{DM}^W_{\mathrm{eff},-}(k)$) by Voevodsky-Suslin method starting with some category of GW-correspondences (and Witt-correspondences) over a perfect field $k$, $char\,k\neq 2$, is defined. The functor $M^{GW}_{eff}\colon Sm_k\to \mathbf{DM}^{GW}_{\mathrm{eff},-}(k)$ of Grothendieck-Witt-motives of smooth varieties is computed and it is proved that for any smooth scheme $X$ and homotopy invariant sheave with GW-transfers $F$ $$ Hom_{\mathbf{DM}^{GW}_{\mathrm{eff},-}(k)}(M^{GW}_{ef…
The K-ring of symmetric vector bundles over a scheme X, the so-called Grothendieck-Witt ring of X, can be endowed with the structure of a (special) $λ$-ring. The associated $γ$-filtration generalizes the fundamental filtration on the (Grothendieck-)Witt ring of a field and is closely related to the "classical" filtration by the kernels of the first two Stiefel-Whitney classes.
Let $R$ be a commutative local ring. We provide an explicit presentation of the symmetric Grothendieck-Witt ring $\mathrm{GW}^{\mathrm{s}}(R)$ of $R$ as an abelian group when $R$ has residue field $\mathbb{F}_2$. This completes a recent work by Rogers and Schlichting, where an explicit presentation of $\mathrm{GW}^{\mathrm{s}}(R)$ is given when the residue field is different from $\mathbb{F}_2$. We then use this result to compute the symmetric Grothendieck-Witt rings for the sequences of local rings $\mathbb{Z}/2^n\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathbb{F}_2[x]/(x^n)$.
Within the framework of dg categories with weak equivalences and duality that have uniquely 2-divisible mapping complexes, we show that higher Grothendieck-Witt groups (aka. hermitian K-groups) are invariant under derived equivalences and that Morita exact sequences induce long exact sequences of Grothendieck-Witt groups. This implies an algebraic Bott sequence and a new proof and generalization of Karoubi's Fundamental Theorem. For the higher Grothendieck-Witt groups of vector bundles of (possibly singular) schemes with an ample family of line-bundles such that 2 is invertible in the ring of …

We prove some results connecting the zeta functions of varieties over finite fields with the big Witt ring over $\mathbb Z$. We explore relations with motivic measures and a classical formula of Macdonald on invariants of symmetric products of a variety.
We determine the structure modulo p of the de Rham-Witt complex of a smooth scheme X over a discrete valuation ring of mixed characteristic with log-poles along the special fiber Y and show that the sub-sheaf fixed by the Frobenius is isomorphic to the sheaf of p-adic vanishing cycles. We use this together with results of the second author and Madsen to evaluate the $K$-theory with finite coefficients of the quotient field K of the henselian local ring of X at a generic point of Y. The result affirms the Lichtenbaum-Quillen conjecture for the field K.
We prove some new cases of the Grothendieck-Serre conjecture for classical groups. This is based on a new construction of the Gersten-Witt complex for Witt groups of Azumaya algebras with involution on regular semilocal rings, with explicit second residue maps; the complex is shown to be exact when the ring is of dimension $\le 2$ (or $\le 4$, with additional hypotheses on the algebra with involution). Note that we do not assume that the ring contains a field.
We describe chromatic localisations of genuine L-spectra of discrete rings and deduce that the purity property of $K(1)$-local $K$-theory of rings established by Bhatt-Clausen-Mathew also holds in Grothendieck-Witt theory. In addition, we collect some results on higher chromatic localisations of various L-theory spectra and their consequences for Grothendieck-Witt theory.
We prove a trace formula in stable motivic homotopy theory over a general base scheme, equating the trace of an endomorphism of a smooth proper scheme with the "Euler characteristic integral" of a certain cohomotopy class over its scheme of fixed points. When the base is a field and the fixed points are étale, we compute this integral in terms of Morel's identification of the ring of endomorphisms of the motivic sphere spectrum with the Grothendieck-Witt ring. In particular, we show that the Euler characteristic of an étale algebra corresponds to the class of its trace form in the Grothendieck…
We study Witt groups of smooth curves and surfaces over algebraically closed fields of characteristic not two. In both dimensions, we determine both the classical Witt group and Balmer's shifted Witt groups. In the case of curves, the results are supplemented with a complete description of the (shifted) Grothendieck-Witt groups. In a second step, we analyse the relationship of Witt groups of smooth complex curves and surfaces with their real topological K-groups. They turn out to be surprisingly close: for all curves and for all projective surfaces of geometric genus zero, the Witt groups may …
We improve the homology stability range for the 3rd integral homology of symplectic groups over commutative local rings with infinite residue field. As an application, we show that for local commutative rings containing an infinite field of characteristic not 2 the symbol map from Milnor-Witt K-theory to higher Grothendieck-Witt groups is an isomorphism in degrees 2 and 3.
We define push-forwards for Witt groups of schemes along proper morphisms, using Grothendieck duality theory. This article is an application of results of the authors on tensor-triangulated closed categories to such structures on some derived categories of schemes together with classical derived functors.
We show that the Grothendieck-Witt and Witt groups of smooth complex cellular varieties can be identified with their topological KO-groups. As an application, we deduce the values of the Witt groups of all irreducible hermitian symmetric spaces, including smooth complex quadrics, spinor varieties and symplectic Grassmannians.
Motivated by periodicity theorems for Real $K$-theory and Grothendieck--Witt theory and, separately, work of Hori-Walcher on the physics of Landau-Ginzburg orientifolds, we introduce and study categories of Real matrix factorizations. Our main results are generalizations of Knörrer periodicity to categories of Real matrix factorizations. These generalizations are structurally similar to $(1,1)$-periodicity for $KR$-theory and $4$-periodicity for Grothendieck-Witt theory. We use techniques from Real categorical representation theory which allow us to incorporate into our main results equivarian…
The representation ring of an affine algebraic group scheme can be endowed with the structure of a (special) $λ$-ring. We show that the same is true for the ring of symmetric representations, i.e. for the Grothendieck-Witt ring of the representation category, for any affine algebraic group scheme over a field of characteristic not two.
This paper is the first in a series in which we offer a new framework for hermitian K-theory in the realm of stable $\infty$-categories. Our perspective yields solutions to a variety of classical problems involving Grothendieck-Witt groups of rings and clarifies the behaviour of these invariants when 2 is not invertible. In this article we lay the foundations of our approach by considering Lurie's notion of a Poincaré $\infty$-category, which permits an abstract counterpart of unimodular forms called Poincaré objects. We analyse the special cases of hyperbolic and metabolic Poincaré objects, a…
Given an Azumaya algebra with involution $(A,σ)$ over a commutative ring $R$ and some auxiliary data, we construct an $8$-periodic chain complex involving the Witt groups of $(A,σ)$ and other algebras with involution, and prove it is exact when $R$ is semilocal. When $R$ is a field, this recovers an $8$-periodic exact sequence of Witt groups of Grenier-Boley and Mahmoudi, which in turn generalizes exact sequences of Parimala--Sridharan--Suresh and Lewis. We apply this result in several ways: We establish the Grothendieck--Serre conjecture on principal homogeneous bundles and the local purity c…
Let $A$ be a discrete valuation ring with field of fractions $F$ and (sufficiently large) residue field $k$. We prove that there is a natural exact sequence $H_3(\mathrm{SL}_2(A),\mathbb{Z}[\frac{1}{2}]) \to H_3(\mathrm{SL}_2(F),\mathbb{Z}[\frac{1}{2}])\to \mathcal{RP}_1(k)[\frac{1}{2}]\to 0$, where $\mathcal{RP}_1(k)$ is the refined scissors congruence group of $k$. Let $Γ_0(\mathfrak{m}_A)$ denote the congruence subgroup consisting of matrices in $\mathrm{SL}_2(A)$ whose lower off-diagonal entry lies in the maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}_A$. We also prove that there is an exact sequence $0\to \…
Let F be a field, let G be its absolute Galois group, and let R(G, k) be the representation ring of G over a suitable field k. In this preprint we construct a ring homomorphism from the mod 2 Milnor K-theory k_*(F) to the graded ring gr R(G, k) associated to Grothendieck's γ-filtration. We study this map in particular cases, as well as a related map involving the W-group of F rather than G. The latter is an isomorphism in all cases considered. Naturally this echoes the Milnor conjecture (now a theorem), which states that k_*(F) is isomorphic to the mod 2 cohomology of the absolute Galois group…
