We introduce a class of second order backward stochastic differential equations and show relations to fully non-linear parabolic PDEs. In particular, we provide a stochastic representation result for solutions of such PDEs and discuss Monte Carlo methods for their numerical treatment.
In this paper we study the relationship between functional forward-backward stochastic systems and path-dependent PDEs. In the framework of functional Itô calculus, we introduce a path-dependent PDE and prove that its solution is uniquely determined by a functional forward-backward stochastic system.
We obtain an existence and uniqueness theorem for fully coupled forward-backward SDEs (FBSDEs) with jumps via the classical solution to the associated quasilinear parabolic partial integro-differential equation (PIDE), and provide the explicit form of the FBSDE solution. Moreover, we embed the associated PIDE into a suitable class of non-local quasilinear parabolic PDEs which allows us to extend the methodology of Ladyzhenskaya et al (1968) to non-local PDEs of this class. Namely, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of a classical solution to both the Cauchy problem and the initial-boundary…
This paper explores the relationship between non-Markovian fully coupled forward-backward stochastic systems and path-dependent PDEs. The definition of classical solution for the path-dependent PDE is given within the framework of functional Itô calculus. Under mild hypotheses, we prove that the forward-backward stochastic system provides the unique classical solution to the path-dependent PDE.
We prove a comparison result for viscosity solutions of (possibly degenerate) parabolic fully nonlinear path-dependent PDEs. In contrast with the previous result in Ekren, Touzi & Zhang, our conditions are easier to check and allow for the degenerate case, thus including first order path-dependent PDEs. Our argument follows the regularization method as introduced by Jensen, Lions & Souganidis in the corresponding finite-dimensional PDE setting. The present argument significantly simplifies the comparison proof in Ekren, Touzi & Zhang, but requires an $L^p-$type of continuity (with respect to t…
We obtain existence results for the solution u of nonlocal semilinear parabolic PDEs on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with polynomial nonlinearities in $(u, \nabla u)$, using a tree-based probabilistic representation. This probabilistic representation applies to the solution of the equation itself, as well as to its partial derivatives by associating one of d marks to the initial tree branch. Partial derivatives are dealt with by integration by parts and subordination of Brownian motion. Numerical illustrations are provided in examples for the fractional Laplacian in dimension up to 10, and for the fractiona…
Regularity of solutions is studied for backward stochastic parabolic Ito equations. An analog of the second energy inequality and the related existence theorem are obtained for domains with boundary.
We consider the Cauchy problem for semilinear parabolic equation in divergence form with obstacle. We show that under natural conditions on the right-hand side of the eqution and mild conditions on the obstacle a unique continuous solution of the problem admits a stochastic representation in terms of reflected backward stochastic differential equations. We derive also some regularity properties of so- lutions and prove useful approximation results.
Connections between a system of Forward-Backward SDEs and Backward Stochastic PDEs related to the utility maximiza- tion problem is established. Besides, we derive another version of FBSDE of the same problem and prove an existence of a solution
Backward stochastic partial differential equations of parabolic type with variable coefficients are considered in smooth domains. Existence and uniqueness results are given in weighted Sobolev spaces allowing the derivatives of the solutions to blow up near the boundary.
We study existence, uniqueness, semi-group property, and a priori estimates for solutions for backward parabolic Ito equations in domains with boundary. We study also duality between forward and backward equations. The semi-group for backward equations is established in the form of some anti-causality. The novelty is that the semi-group property involves the diffusion term that is a part of the solution.
We consider an elliptic PDE in two variables. As one parameter approaches zero, this PDE collapses to a parabolic one, that is forward parabolic in a part of the domain and backward parabolic in the remainder. Such problems arise naturally in various stochastic models, such as fluid models for data-handling systems and Markov-modulated queues. We employ singular perturbation methods to study the problem for small values of the parameter.
It is known that Markovian forward-backward stochastic differential equations provide nonlinear Feynman-Kac representation formulae for semilinear parabolic PDEs. We show that non-Markovian forward-backward stochastic differential equations provide nonlinear Feynman-Kac formulae for semilinear path-dependent PDEs. This extends the result proved in Ekren, Keller, Touzi, and Zhang [4] to the case with a possibly degenerate diffusion coefficient in the forward dynamics.
Mathematical mean-field approaches have been used in many fields, not only in Physics and Chemistry, but also recently in Finance, Economics, and Game Theory. In this paper we will study a new special mean-field problem in a purely probabilistic method, to characterize its limit which is the solution of mean-field backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) with reflections. On the other hand, we will prove that this type of reflected mean-field BSDEs can also be obtained as the limit equation of the mean-field BSDEs by penalization method. Finally, we give the probabilistic interpretat…
The classical Feynman-Kac identity builds a bridge between stochastic analysis and partial differential equations (PDEs) by providing stochastic representations for classical solutions of linear Kolmogorov PDEs. This opens the door for the derivation of sampling based Monte Carlo approximation methods, which can be meshfree and thereby stand a chance to approximate solutions of PDEs without suffering from the curse of dimensionality. In this article we extend the classical Feynman-Kac formula to certain semilinear Kolmogorov PDEs. More specifically, we identify suitable solutions of stochastic…
In this paper, by virtue of Malliavin calculus, we establish a relationship between backward doubly stochastic differential equations with random coefficients and quasilinear stochastic PDEs, and thus extend the well-known nonlinear stochastic Feynman-Kac formula of Pardoux and Peng [14] to non-Markovian case.
The aim of the present work is the introduction of a viscosity type solution, called strong-viscosity solution to distinguish it from the classical one, with the following peculiarities: it is a purely analytic object; it can be easily adapted to more general equations than classical partial differential equations. First, we introduce the notion of strong-viscosity solution for semilinear parabolic partial differential equations, defining it, in a few words, as the pointwise limit of classical solutions to perturbed semilinear parabolic partial differential equations; we compare it with the st…
We prove that under natural assumptions on the data strong solutions in Sobolev spaces of semilinear parabolic equations in divergence form involving measure on the right-hand side may be represented by solutions of some generalized backward stochastic differential equations. As an application we provide stochastic representation of strong solutions of the obstacle problem be means of solutions of some reflected backward stochastic differential equations. To prove the latter result we use a stochastic homographic approximation for solutions of the reflected backward equation. The approximation…
We propose a fully backward representation of semilinear PDEs with application to stochastic control. Based on this, we develop a fully backward Monte-Carlo scheme allowing to generate the regression grid, backwardly in time, as the value function is computed. This offers two key advantages in terms of computational efficiency and memory. First, the grid is generated adaptively in the areas of interest and second, there is no need to store the entire grid. The performances of this technique are compared in simulations to the traditional Monte-Carlo forward-backward approach on a control proble…
A new class of random partial differential equations of parabolic type is considered, where the stochastic term consists of an irregular noisy drift, not necessarily Gaussian, for which a suitable interpretation is provided. After freezing a realization of the drift (stochastic process), we study existence and uniqueness (in some appropriate sense) of the associated parabolic equation and a probabilistic interpretation is investigated.
In this paper we study a zero-sum switching game and its verification theorems expressed in terms of either a system of Reflected Backward Stochastic Differential Equations (RBSDEs in short) with bilateral interconnected obstacles or a system of parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs in short) with bilateral interconnected obstacles as well. We show that each one of the systems has a unique solution. Then we show that the game has a value.
We obtain upper and lower Gaussian density estimates for the law of each component of the solution to a one-dimensional fully coupled forward-backward SDE (FBSDE). Our approach relies on the link between FBSDEs and quasilinear parabolic PDEs, and is fully based on the use of classical results on PDEs rather than on manipulation of FBSDEs, compared to other papers on this topic. This essentially simplifies the analysis.
We study and compare two concepts for weak solutions to semilinear parabolic path-dependent partial differential equations (PPDEs). The first is that of mild solutions as it appears, e.g., in the log-Laplace functionals of historical superprocesses. The aim of this paper is to show that mild solutions are also solutions in a viscosity sense. This result is motivated by the fact that mild solutions can provide value functions and optimal strategies for problems of stochastic optimal control. Since unique mild solutions exist under weak conditions, we obtain as a corollary a general existence re…
In this paper, we prove a convergence theorem for singular perturbations problems for a class of fully nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations with ergodic structures. The limit function is represented as the viscosity solution to a fully nonlinear degenerate PDEs. Our approach is mainly based on G-stochastic analysis argument. As a byproduct, we also establish the averaging principle for stochastic differential equations driven by G-Brownian motion with two time-scales. The results extend Khasminskii's averaging principle to nonlinear case.
We consider a system of interacting diffusions on the integer lattice. By letting the mesh size go to zero and by using a suitable scaling, we show that the system converges (in a strong sense) to a solution of the stochastic heat equation on the real line. As a consequence, we obtain comparison inequalities for product moments of the stochastic heat equation with different nonlinearities.
Recently proposed numerical algorithms for solving high-dimensional nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) based on neural networks have shown their remarkable performance. We review some of them and study their convergence properties. The methods rely on probabilistic representation of PDEs by backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) and their iterated time discretization. Our proposed algorithm, called deep backward multistep scheme (MDBDP), is a machine learning version of the LSMDP scheme of Gobet, Turkedjiev (Math. Comp. 85, 2016). It estimates simultaneously by backwar…
In this paper, a class of non-Markovian forward-backward doubly stochastic systems is studied. By using the technique of functional Itô (or path-dependent) calculus, the relationship between the systems and related path-dependent quasi-linear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs in short) is established, and the well-known nonlinear stochastic Feynman-Kac formula of Pardoux and Peng [Backward doubly stochastic differential equations and systems of quasilinear SPDEs, Probab. Theory Relat. Fields 98 (1994), pp. 209--227] is developed to the non-Markovian situation. Moreover, we obtai…
Using purely probabilistic methods, we prove the existence and the uniqueness of solutions fora system of coupled forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs) with measurable, possibly discontinuous coefficients. As a corollary, we obtain the well-posedness of semilinear parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) $$ \begin{aligned} &\mathcal{L} u(t,x)+F(t,x,u,\partial_x u)=0;\qquad u(T,x)=h(x)\\ &\mathcal{L}:=\partial_t+\frac{1}{2}\sum_{i,j=1}^m(σσ^\intercal)_{ij}(t,x)\partial^2_{x_ix_j} \end{aligned} $$ in the natural domain of the second-order linear parabolic operator $\…
We give a survey of recent result regarding scaling limits of systems from statistical mechanics, as well as the universality of the behaviour of such systems in so-called cross-over regimes. It transpires that some of these universal objects are described by singular stochastic PDEs. We then give a survey of the recently developed theory of regularity structures which allows to build these objects and to describe some of their properties. We place particular emphasis on the renormalisation procedure required to give meaning to these equations. These are expanded notes of the 20th Takagi lectu…
Stemmed from the derivation of the optimal control to a stochastic linear-quadratic control problem with Markov jumps, we study one kind of backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) that the generator f is affected by a Markovian switching. Then, the case that the Markov chain is involved in a large state space is considered. Following the classical approach, a hierarchical approach is adopted to reduce the complexity and a singularly perturbed Markov chain is involved. We will study the asymptotic property of BSDE with the singularly perturbed Markov chain. At last, as an application…
The main objective of this paper and the accompanying one \cite{ETZ2} is to provide a notion of viscosity solutions for fully nonlinear parabolic path-dependent PDEs. Our definition extends our previous work \cite{EKTZ}, focused on the semilinear case, and is crucially based on the nonlinear optimal stopping problem analyzed in \cite{ETZ0}. We prove that our notion of viscosity solutions is consistent with the corresponding notion of classical solutions, and satisfies a stability property and a partial comparison result. The latter is a key step for the wellposedness results established in \ci…
We propose a numerical method for solving high dimensional fully nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs). Our algorithm estimates simultaneously by backward time induction the solution and its gradient by multi-layer neural networks, while the Hessian is approximated by automatic differentiation of the gradient at previous step. This methodology extends to the fully nonlinear case the approach recently proposed in \cite{HPW19} for semi-linear PDEs. Numerical tests illustrate the performance and accuracy of our method on several examples in high dimension with nonlinearity on the Hessia…
We propose a time-space discretization scheme for quasi-linear parabolic PDEs. The algorithm relies on the theory of fully coupled forward--backward SDEs, which provides an efficient probabilistic representation of this type of equation. The derivated algorithm holds for strong solutions defined on any interval of arbitrary length. As a bypass product, we obtain a discretization procedure for the underlying FBSDE. In particular, our work provides an alternative to the method described in [Douglas, Ma and Protter (1996) Ann. Appl. Probab. 6 940--968] and weakens the regularity assumptions requi…
We consider parabolic PDEs with randomly switching boundary conditions. In order to analyze these random PDEs, we consider more general stochastic hybrid systems and prove convergence to, and properties of, a stationary distribution. Applying these general results to the heat equation with randomly switching boundary conditions, we find explicit formulae for various statistics of the solution and obtain almost sure results about its regularity and structure. These results are of particular interest for biological applications as well as for their significant departure from behavior seen in PDE…
This paper is concerned with semi-linear backward stochastic partial differential equations (BSPDEs for short) of super-parabolic type. An $L^p$-theory is given for the Cauchy problem of BSPDEs, separately for the case of $p\in (1,2]$ and for the case of $p\in (2, \infty)$. A comparison theorem is also addressed.
In this paper we study parabolic stochastic partial differential equations defined on arbitrary bounded domain $\cO \subset \bR^d$ allowing Hardy inequality: $$ \int_{\cO}|ρ^{-1}g|^2\,dx\leq C\int_{\cO}|g_x|^2 dx, \quad \forall g\in C^{\infty}_0(\cO), $$ where $ρ(x)=\text{dist}(x,\partial \cO)$. Existence and uniqueness results are given in weighted Sobolev spaces $\frH^γ_{p,θ}(\cO,T)$, where $p\in [2,\infty)$, $γ\in \bR$ is the number of derivatives of solutions and $θ$ controls the boundary behavior of solutions. Furthermore several Hölder estimates of the solutions are also obtained. It is …
One proves here the backward uniqueness of solutions to stochastic semilinear parabolic equations and also for the tamed Navier-Stokes equations driven by linearly multiplicative Gaussian noises. Applications to approximate controllability of nonlinear stochastic parabolic equations with initial controllers are given. The method of proof relies on the logarithmic convexity property known to hold for solutions to linear evolution equations in Hilbert spaces with self-adjoint principal part.
We consider the problem of estimating stochastic volatility for a class of second-order parabolic stochastic PDEs. Assuming that the solution is observed at a high temporal frequency, we use limit theorems for multipower variations and related functionals to construct consistent nonparametric estimators and asymptotic confidence bounds for the integrated volatility process. As a byproduct of our analysis, we also obtain feasible estimators for the regularity of the spatial covariance function of the noise.
In this paper, we establish the relationship between backward stochastic Volterra integral equations (BSVIEs, for short) and a kind of non-local quasilinear (and possibly degenerate) parabolic equations. We first introduce the extended backward stochastic Volterra integral equations (EBSVIEs, for short). Under some mild conditions, we establish the well-posedness of EBSVIEs and obtain some regularity results of the adapted solution to the EBSVIEs via Malliavin calculus. We show that a given function expressed in terms of the solution to the EBSVIEs solves a certain system of non-local paraboli…
The main purpose of this paper is to study the problem of determining initial condition of nonlinear parabolic equation from noisy observations of the final condition. We introduce a regularized method to establish an approximate solution. We prove an upper bound on the rate of convergence of the mean integrated squared error.

In this paper we introduce a numerical method for nonlinear parabolic PDEs that combines operator splitting with deep learning. It divides the PDE approximation problem into a sequence of separate learning problems. Since the computational graph for each of the subproblems is comparatively small, the approach can handle extremely high-dimensional PDEs. We test the method on different examples from physics, stochastic control and mathematical finance. In all cases, it yields very good results in up to 10,000 dimensions with short run times.
In our previous paper [Ekren, Touzi and Zhang (2015)], we introduced a notion of viscosity solutions for fully nonlinear path-dependent PDEs, extending the semilinear case of Ekren et al. [Ann. Probab. 42 (2014) 204-236], which satisfies a partial comparison result under standard Lipshitz-type assumptions. The main result of this paper provides a full, well-posedness result under an additional assumption, formulated on some partial differential equation, defined locally by freezing the path. Namely, assuming further that such path-frozen standard PDEs satisfy the comparison principle and the P…
This paper presents existence and uniqueness results for reflected backward doubly stochastic differential equations (in short RBDDSEs) in a convex domain D. Moreover, using a stochastic flow approach a probabilistic interpretation for a class of reflected SPDE's in a domain is given via such RBDSDEs. The solution is expressed as a pair (u,ν) where u is a predictable continuous process which takes values in a Sobolev space and m is a random regular measure. The bounded variation process K, component of the solution of the reflected BDSDE, controls the set when u reaches the boundary of D. This…
This paper studies forward and backward versions of random Burgers equation (RBE) with stochastic coefficients. Firstly, the celebrated Cole-Hopf transformation reduces the forward RBE to a forward random heat equation (RHE) that can be treated pathwise. Next we provide a connection between the backward Burgers equation and a system of FBSDEs. Exploiting this connection, we derive a generalization of the Cole-Hopf transformation which links the backward RBE with the backward RHE and investigate the range of its applicability. Stochastic Feynman-Kac representations for the solutions are provide…
We study utility maximization problem for general utility functions using dynamic programming approach. We consider an incomplete financial market model, where the dynamics of asset prices are described by an $R^d$-valued continuous semimartingale. Under some regularity assumptions we derive backward stochastic partial differential equation (BSPDE) related directly to the primal problem and show that the strategy is optimal if and only if the corresponding wealth process satisfies a certain forward-SDE. As examples the cases of power, exponential and logarithmic utilities are considered.
In this paper we address again the problem of the connection between multitime Brownian sheet and heat type PDEs. The main results include: the volumetric character of the solutions of the forward (backward) diffusion-like PDEs; the forward mean value of a Brownian process as the solution of the forward heat PDE; the backward mean value of a Brownian process as the solution of the backward heat PDE; the multitime stochastic processes with volumetric dependence; the stochastic partial derivative of a stochastic process with respect to a multitime Wiener process; Hermite polynomials stochastic p…
We introduce a generalized notion of semilinear elliptic partial differential equations where the corresponding second order partial differential operator $L$ has a generalized drift. We investigate existence and uniqueness of generalized solutions of class $C^1$. The generator $L$ is associated with a Markov process $X$ which is the solution of a stochastic differential equation with distributional drift. If the semilinear PDE admits boundary conditions, its solution is naturally associated with a backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) with random terminal time, where the forward pr…
We consider a class of parabolic stochastic PDEs on bounded domains $D\subseteq\mathbb{R}^d$ that includes the stochastic heat equation, but with a fractional power $γ$ of the Laplacian. Viewing the solution as a process with values in a scale of fractional Sobolev spaces $H_r$, with $r < γ- d/2$, we study its power variations in $H_r$ along regular partitions of the time-axis. As the mesh size tends to zero, we find a phase transition at $r=-d/2$: the solutions have a nontrivial quadratic variation when $r<-d/2$ and a nontrivial $p$th order variation for $p= 2γ/(γ-d/2-r)>2$ when $r>-d/2$. Mor…
The aim of this article is to study the asymptotic behaviour for large times of solutions to a certain class of stochastic partial differential equations of parabolic type. In particular, we will prove the backward uniqueness result and the existence of the spectral limit for abstract SPDEs and then show how these results can be applied to some concrete linear and nonlinear SPDEs. For example, we will consider linear parabolic SPDEs with gradient noise and stochastic NSEs with multiplicative noise. Our results generalize the results proved in \cite{[Ghidaglia-1986]} for deterministic PDEs.
Explicit stabilized integrators are an efficient alternative to implicit or semi-implicit methods to avoid the severe timestep restriction faced by standard explicit integrators applied to stiff diffusion problems. In this paper, we provide a fully discrete strong convergence analysis of a family of explicit stabilized methods coupled with finite element methods for a class of parabolic semilinear deterministic and stochastic partial differential equations. Numerical experiments including the semilinear stochastic heat equation with space-time white noise confirm the theoretical findings.
