We show that the mixing times of random walks on compact groups can be used to obtain concentration inequalities for the respective Haar measures. As an application, we derive a concentration inequality for the empirical distribution of eigenvalues of sums of random hermitian matrices, with possible applications in free probability. The advantage over existing techniques is that the new method can deal with functions that are non-Lipschitz or even discontinuous with respect to the usual metrics.
Let $U_n$ be an $n \times n$ Haar unitary matrix. In this paper, the asymptotic normality and independence of $\Tr U_n, \Tr U_n^2, ..., \Tr U_n^k$ are shown by using elementary methods. More generally, it is shown that the renormalized truncated Haar unitaries converge to a Gaussian random matrix in distribution.
Let $A_m^{(1)},\ldots, A_m^{(k)}$ be $m\times m$ left-uppermost blocks of $k$ independent $n\times n$ Haar unitary matrices where $\frac{n}{m}\to α$ as $m\to \infty$, with $1<α<\infty$. Using free probability and Brown measure techniques, we find the limiting spectral distribution of $A_m^{(1)}\cdots A_m^{(k)}$.
Let U be a Haar distributed unitary matrix in U(n)or O(n). We show that after centering the double index process $$ W^{(n)} (s,t) = \sum_{i \leq \lfloor ns \rfloor, j \leq \lfloor nt\rfloor} |U_{ij}|^2 $$ converges in distribution to the bivariate tied-down Brownian bridge. The proof relies on the notion of second order freeness.
We present a genus expansion-type expression for the expected values of products of traces of expressions involving Haar-distributed orthogonal matrices. As with other real genus expansions, nonorientable surfaces appear, in addition to the orientable surfaces of the complex expansion. We use this expression to demonstrate that independent random matrices which are orthogonally in general position, such as matrices whose distributions are orthogonally invariant, are asymptotically real second-order free.
Let $U_m$ be an $m \times m$ Haar unitary matrix and $U_{[m,n]}$ be its $n \times n$ truncation. In this paper the large deviation is proven for the empirical eigenvalue density of $U_{[m,n]}$ as $m/n \to λ$ and $n \to \infty$. The rate function and the limit distribution are given explicitly. $U_{[m,n]}$ is the random matrix model of $quq$, where $u$ is a Haar unitary in a finite von Neumann algebra, $q$ is a certain projection and they are free. The limit distribution coincides with the Brown measure of the operator $quq$.
We study Haar unitary random matrices with permuted entries. For a sequence of permutations $\left(σ_N\right)_N$, where $σ_N$ acts on $N\times N$ matrices we identify conditions under which the $\ast$--distribution of permuted Haar unitary matrices $U_N^{σ_N}$ is asymptotically circular and free from the unpermuted sequence $U_N$. We show that this convergence takes place in the almost sure sense. Moreover we show that our conditions on the sequence of permutations are generic in the sense that are almost surely satisfied by a sequence of random permutations.
The asymptotic law of the truncated $S\times S$ random submatrix of a Haar random matrix in $\mathrm{GL}_N(\mathbb{Z}_m)$ as $N$ goes to infinity is obtained. The same result is also obtained when $\mathbb{Z}_m$ is replaced by any commutative compact local ring whose maximal ideal is topologically closed.
We demonstrate the asymptotic real second order freeness of Haar distributed orthogonal matrices and an independent ensemble of random matrices. Our main result states that if we have two independent ensembles of random matrices with a real second order limit distribution and one of them is invariant under conjugation by an orthogonal matrix, then the two ensembles are asymptotically real second order free. This captures the known examples of asymptotic real second order freeness introduced by Redelmeier [R1, R2].
We address the local spectral behavior of the random matrix $Π_1 U^{\otimes k} Π_2 U^{\otimes k *} Π_1$, where $U$ is a Haar distributed unitary matrix of size $n\times n$, the factor $k$ is at most $c_0\log n$ for a small constant $c_0>0$, and $Π_1,Π_2$ are arbitrary projections on $\ell_2^{n^k}$ of ranks proportional to $n^k$. We prove that in this setting the $k$-fold Kronecker product behaves similarly to the well-studied case when $k=1$.
Let $U$ be a Haar distributed matrix in $\mathbb U(n)$ or $\mathbb O (n)$. In a previous paper, we proved that after centering, the two-parameter process \[T^{(n)} (s,t) = \sum_{i \leq \lfloor ns \rfloor, j \leq \lfloor nt\rfloor} |U_{ij}|^2\] converges in distribution to the bivariate tied-down Brownian bridge. In the present paper, we replace the deterministic truncation of $U$ by a random one, where each row (resp. column) is chosen with probability $s$ (resp. $t$) independently. We prove that the corresponding two-parameter process, after centering and normalization by $n^{-1/2}$ converges…
In this paper, we are interested in sequences of q-tuple of N-by-N random matrices having a strong limiting distribution (i.e. given any non-commutative polynomial in the matrices and their conjugate transpose, its normalized trace and its norm converge). We start with such a sequence having this property, and we show that this property pertains if the q-tuple is enlarged with independent unitary Haar distributed random matrices. Besides, the limit of norms and traces in non-commutative polynomials in the enlarged family can be computed with reduced free product construction. This extends resu…
We provide an elementary proof for a theorem due to Petz and Réffy which states that for a random $n\times n$ unitary matrix with distribution given by the Haar measure on the unitary group U(n), the upper left (or any other) $k\times k$ submatrix converges in distribution, after multiplying by a normalization factor $\sqrt{n}$ and as $n\to\infty$, to a matrix of independent complex Gaussian random variables with mean 0 and variance 1.
We show that the empirical eigenvalue measure for sum of $d$ independent Haar distributed $n$-dimensional unitary matrices, converge for $n \to \infty$ to the Brown measure of the free sum of $d$ Haar unitary operators. The same applies for independent Haar distributed $n$-dimensional orthogonal matrices. As a byproduct of our approach, we relax the requirement of uniformly bounded imaginary part of Stieltjes transform of $T_n$ that is made in [Guionnet, Krishnapur, Zeitouni; Theorem 1].
Let $U^N = (U_1^N,\dots, U^N_p)$ be a d-tuple of $N\times N$ independent Haar unitary matrices and $Z^{NM}$ be any family of deterministic matrices in $\mathbb{M}_N(\mathbb{C})\otimes \mathbb{M}_M(\mathbb{C})$. Let $P$ be a self-adjoint non-commutative polynomial. In 1998, Voiculescu showed that the empirical measure of the eigenvalues of this polynomial evaluated in Haar unitary matrices and deterministic matrices converges towards a deterministic measure defined thanks to free probability theory. Let now $f$ be a smooth function, the main technical result of this paper is a precise bound of …
We establish formulae for the moments of the moments of the characteristic polynomials of random orthogonal and symplectic matrices in terms of certain lattice point count problems. This allows us to establish asymptotic formulae when the matrix-size tends to infinity in terms of the volumes of certain regions involving continuous Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns with constraints. The results we find differ from those in the unitary case considered previously
Let H be a Haar distributed random matrix on the group of pxp real orthogonal matrices. Partition H into four blocks: (1) the (1,1) element, (2)the rest of the first row, (3) the rest of the first column, and (4)the remaining (p-1)x(p-1) matrix. The marginal distribution of (1) is well known. In this paper, we give the conditional distribution of (2) and (3) given (1), and the conditional distribution of (4) given (1), (2), (3). This conditional specification uniquely determines the Haar distribution. The two conditional distributions involve well known probability distributions namely, the un…
The topic of this paper is the asymptotic distribution of random orthogonal matrices distributed according to Haar measure. We examine the total variation distance between the joint distribution of the entries of $W_n$, the $p_n \times q_n$ upper-left block of a Haar-distributed matrix, and that of $p_nq_n$ independent standard Gaussian random variables. We show that the total variation distance converges to zero when $p_nq_n = o(n)$.
In this work we study a version of the general question of how well a Haar distributed orthogonal matrix can be approximated by a random gaussian matrix. Here, we consider a gaussian random matrix $Y_n$ of order $n$ and apply to it the Gram-Schmidt orthonormalization procedure by columns to obtain a Haar distributed orthogonal matrix $U_n$. If $F_i^m$ denotes the vector formed by the first $m$-coordinates of the $i$th row of $Y_n-\sqrt{n}U_n$ and $α=\frac{m}{n}$, our main result shows that the euclidean norm of $F_i^m$ converges exponentially fast to $\sqrt{ \left(2-\frac{4}{3} \frac{(1-(1 -α)…
We consider random matrices of the form $H_N=A_N+U_N B_N U^*_N$, where $A_N$, $B_N$ are two $N$ by $N$ deterministic Hermitian matrices and $U_N$ is a Haar distributed random unitary matrix. We establish a universal Central Limit Theorem for the linear eigenvalue statistics of $H_N$ on all mesoscopic scales inside the regular bulk of the spectrum. The proof is based on studying the characteristic function of the linear eigenvalue statistics, and consists of two main steps: (1) generating Ward identities using the left-translation-invariance of the Haar measure, along with a local law for the r…
The eigenvalue distribution of the sum of two large Hermitian matrices, when one of them is conjugated by a Haar distributed unitary matrix, is asymptotically given by the free convolution of their spectral distributions. We prove that this convergence also holds locally in the bulk of the spectrum, down to the optimal scales larger than the eigenvalue spacing. The corresponding eigenvectors are fully delocalized. Similar results hold for the sum of two real symmetric matrices, when one is conjugated by a Haar orthogonal matrix.
We consider the sum of two large Hermitian matrices $A$ and $B$ with a Haar unitary conjugation bringing them into a general relative position. We prove that the eigenvalue density on the scale slightly above the local eigenvalue spacing is asymptotically given by the free convolution of the laws of $A$ and $B$ as the dimension of the matrix increases. This implies optimal rigidity of the eigenvalues and optimal rate of convergence in Voiculescu's theorem. Our previous works [3,4] established these results in the bulk spectrum, the current paper completely settles the problem at the spectral e…
We show that Lyapunov exponents and stability exponents are equal in the case of product of $i.i.d$ isotropic(also known as bi-unitarily invariant) random matrices. We also derive aysmptotic distribution of singular values and eigenvalues of these product random matrices. Moreover, Lyapunov exponents are distinct, unless the random matrices are random scalar multiples of Haar unitary matrices or orthogonal matrices. As a corollary of above result, we show probability that product of $n$ $i.i.d$ real isotropic random matrices has all eigenvalues real goes to one as $n \to \infty$. Also, in the …
This paper is concerned with complex eigenvalues of truncated unitary quaternion matrices equipped with the Haar measure. The joint eigenvalue probability density function is obtained for truncations of any size. We also obtain the spectral density and the eigenvalue correlation functions in various scaling limits. In the limit of strong non-unitarity the universal complex Ginibre form of the correlation functions is recovered in the spectral bulk off the real line after unfolding the spectrum. In the limit of weak non-unitarity we obtain the spectral density and eigenvalue correlation functio…
In this paper, we study the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the spiked invariant multiplicative models when the randomness is from Haar matrices. We establish the limits of the outlier eigenvalues $\widehatλ_i$ and the generalized components ($\langle \mathbf{v}, \widehat{\mathbf{u}}_i \rangle$ for any deterministic vector $\mathbb{v}$) of the outlier eigenvectors $\widehat{\mathbf{u}}_i$ with optimal convergence rates. Moreover, we prove that the non-outlier eigenvalues stick with those of the unspiked matrices and the non-outlier eigenvectors are delocalized. The results also hold near the s…
We study states on the universal noncommutative *-algebra generated by the coefficients of a unitary matrix, or equivalently states on the unitary dual group. Its structure of dual group in the sense of Voiculescu allows to define five natural convolutions. We prove that there exists no Haar state for those convolutions. However, we prove that there exists a weaker form of absorbing state, that we call Haar trace, for the free and the tensor convolutions. We show that the free Haar trace is the limit in distribution of the blocks of a Haar unitary matrix when the dimension tends to infinity. F…
This note presents some equalities in law for $Z_N:=\det(\Id-G)$, where $G$ is an element of a subgroup of the set of unitary matrices of size $N$, endowed with its unique probability Haar measure. Indeed, under some general conditions, $Z_N$ can be decomposed as a product of independent random variables, whose laws are explicitly known. Our results can be obtained in two ways : either by a recursive decomposition of the Haar measure or by previous results by Killip and Nenciu on orthogonal polynomials with respect to some measure on the unit circle. This latter method leads naturally to a stu…
We show that real second order freeness appears in the study of Haar unitary and unitarily invariant random matrices when transposes are also considered. In particular we obtain the unexpected result that a unitarily invariant random matrix will be asymptotically free from its transpose.
We present a concentration inequality for linear functionals of noncommutative polynomials in random matrices. Our hypotheses cover most standard ensembles, including Gaussian matrices, matrices with independent uniformly bounded entries and unitary or orthogonal matrices.
We revisit the work of the first named author and using simpler algebraic arguments we calculate integrals of polynomial functions with respect to the Haar measure on the unitary group U(d). The previous result provided exact formulas only for 2d bigger than the degree of the integrated polynomial and we show that these formulas remain valid for all values of d. Also, we consider the integrals of polynomial functions on the orthogonal group O(d) and the symplectic group Sp(d). We obtain an exact character expansion and the asymptotic behavior for large d. Thus we can show the asymptotic freene…
It is well-known that distances in random iid matrices are highly concentrated around their mean. In this note we extend this concentration phenomenon to Wigner matrices. Exponential bounds for the lower tail are also included.
We use Cramér-Chernoff type estimates in order to study the Calderón-Zygmund structure of the kernels $\sum_{I\in\mathcal{D}}a_I(ω)ψ_I(x)ψ_I(y)$ where $a_I$ are subgaussian independent random variables and $\{ψ_I: I\in\mathcal{D}\}$ is a wavelet basis where $\mathcal{D}$ are the dyadic intervals in $\mathbb{R}$. We consider both, the cases of standard smooth wavelets and the case of the Haar wavelet.
In this paper, we consider the addition of two matrices in generic position, namely A + U BU * , where U is drawn under the Haar measure on the unitary or the orthogonal group. We show that, under mild conditions on the empirical spectral measures of the deterministic matrices A and B, the law of the largest eigenvalue satisfies a large deviation principle, in the scale N, with an explicit rate function involving the limit of spherical integrals. We cover in particular all the cases when A and B have no outliers.
The present work provides an original framework for random matrix analysis based on revisiting the concentration of measure theory from a probabilistic point of view. By providing various notions of vector concentration ($q$-exponential, linear, Lipschitz, convex), a set of elementary tools is laid out that allows for the immediate extension of classical results from random matrix theory involving random concentrated vectors in place of vectors with independent entries. These findings are exemplified here in the context of sample covariance matrices but find a large range of applications in st…
A truncation of a Haar distributed orthogonal random matrix gives rise to a matrix whose eigenvalues are either real or complex conjugate pairs, and are supported within the closed unit disk. This is also true for a product $P_m$ of $m$ independent truncated orthogonal random matrices. One of most basic questions for such asymmetric matrices is to ask for the number of real eigenvalues. In this paper, we will exploit the fact that the eigenvalues of $P_m$ form a Pfaffian point process to obtain an explicit determinant expression for the probability of finding any given number of real eigenvalu…
We consider the least singular value of $M = R^* X T + U^* YV$, where $R,T,U,V$ are independent Haar-distributed unitary matrices and $X, Y$ are deterministic diagonal matrices. Under weak conditions on $X$ and $Y$, we show that the limiting distribution of the least singular value of $M$, suitably rescaled, is the same as the limiting distribution for the least singular value of a matrix of i.i.d. gaussian random variables. Our proof is based on the dynamical method used by Che and Landon to study the local spectral statistics of sums of Hermitian matrices.

The paper deals with the distribution of singular values of the input-output Jacobian of deep untrained neural networks in the limit of their infinite width. The Jacobian is the product of random matrices where the independent rectangular weight matrices alternate with diagonal matrices whose entries depend on the corresponding column of the nearest neighbor weight matrix. The problem was considered in \cite{Pe-Co:18} for the Gaussian weights and biases and also for the weights that are Haar distributed orthogonal matrices and Gaussian biases. Basing on a free probability argument, it was clai…
We derive concentration inequalities for functions of the empirical measure of large random matrices with infinitely divisible entries and, in particular, stable ones. We also give concentration results for some other functionals of these random matrices, such as the largest eigenvalue or the largest singular value.
We propose a boundary regularity condition for the $M_n(\mathbb{C})$-valued subordination functions in free probability to prove the local limit theorem and delocalization of eigenvectors for polynomials in two random matrices. We prove this through estimating the pair of $M_n(\mathbb{C})$-valued approximate subordination functions for the sum of two $M_n(\mathbb{C})$-valued random matrices $γ_1\otimes C_N+γ_2\otimes U_N^*D_NU_N$, where $C_N$, $D_N$ are deterministic diagonal matrices, and $U_N$ is Haar unitary.
Spectral and numerical properties of classes of random orthogonal butterfly matrices, as introduced by Parker (1995), are discussed, including the uniformity of eigenvalue distributions. These matrices are important because the matrix-vector product with an $N$-dimensional vector can be performed in $O(N \log N)$ operations. And in the simplest situation, these random matrices coincide with Haar measure on a subgroup of the orthogonal group. We discuss other implications in the context of randomized linear algebra.
We consider sequences of random quantum channels defined using the Stinespring formula with Haar-distributed random orthogonal matrices. For any fixed sequence of input states, we study the asymptotic eigenvalue distribution of the outputs through tensor powers of random channels. We show that the input states achieving minimum output entropy are tensor products of maximally entangled states (Bell states) when the tensor power is even. This phenomenon is completely different from the one for random quantum channels constructed from Haar-distributed random unitary matrices, which leads us to fo…
Given a finite group, we study the Gaussian series of the matrices in the image of its left regular representation. We propose such random matrices as a benchmark for improvements to the noncommutative Khintchine inequality, and we highlight an application to the matrix Spencer conjecture.
We provide a computer algebra package called Random Tensor Network Integrator (RTNI). It allows to compute averages of tensor networks containing multiple Haar-distributed random unitary matrices and deterministic symbolic tensors. Such tensor networks are represented as multigraphs, with vertices corresponding to tensors or random unitaries and edges corresponding to tensor contractions. Input and output spaces of random unitaries may be subdivided into arbitrary tensor factors, with dimensions treated symbolically. The algorithm implements the graphical Weingarten calculus and produces a wei…
Let $A$ and $B$ be two $N$ by $N$ deterministic Hermitian matrices and let $U$ be an $N$ by $N$ Haar distributed unitary matrix. It is well known that the spectral distribution of the sum $H=A+UBU^*$ converges weakly to the free additive convolution of the spectral distributions of $A$ and $B$, as $N$ tends to infinity. We establish the optimal convergence rate ${\frac{1}{N}}$ in the bulk of the spectrum.
Concentration bounds for non-product, non-Haar measures are fairly recent: the first such result was obtained for contracting Markov chains by Marton in 1996 via the coupling method. The work that followed, with few exceptions, also used coupling. Although this technique is of unquestionable utility as a theoretical tool, it is not always simple to apply. As an alternative to coupling, we use the elementary Markov contraction lemma to obtain simple, useful, and apparently novel concentration results for various Markov-type processes. Our technique consists of expressing probabilities as matrix…
We prove that few largest (and most important) eigenvalues of random symmetric matrices of various kinds are very strongly concentrated. This strong concentration enables us to compute the means of these eigenvalues with high precision. Our approach uses Talagrand's inequality and is very different from standard approaches.
In this short note we derive concentration inequalities for the empirical absolute moments of square symmetric matrices with independent symmetrically distributed +/-1 entries. Most of the previous results of this type are limited to functions with bounded Lipschitz constant, and therefore exclude the moments from consideration. Based on the fine analysis of the distribution of the largest eigenvalues developed by Soshnikov and Sinai, we extend the measure concentration tools of Talagrand to encompass power functions.
Motivated by recent results in random matrix theory we will study the distributions arising from products of complex Gaussian random matrices and truncations of Haar distributed unitary matrices. We introduce an appropriately general class of measures and characterize them by their moments essentially given by specific Jacobi polynomials with varying parameters. Solving this moment problem requires a study of the Riemann surfaces associated to a class of algebraic equations. The connection to random matrix theory is then established using methods from free probability.
We investigate concentration properties of spectral measures of Hermitian random matrices with partially dependent entries. More precisely, let $X_n$ be a Hermitian random matrix of size $n\times n$ that can be split into independent blocks of the size at most $d_n=o(n^2)$. We prove that under some mild conditions on the distribution of the entries of $X_n$, the empirical spectral measure of $X_n$ concentrates around its mean. The main theorem is a strengthening of a recent result by Kemp and Zimmerman, where the size of blocks grows as $o(\log n)$. As an application, we are able to upgrade th…
We prove concentration results for $\ell_p^n$ operator norms of rectangular random matrices and eigenvalues of self-adjoint random matrices. The random matrices we consider have bounded entries which are independent, up to a possible self-adjointness constraint. Our results are based on an isoperimetric inequality for product spaces due to Talagrand.
We place ourselves in the setting of high-dimensional statistical inference, where the number of variables $p$ in a data set of interest is of the same order of magnitude as the number of observations $n$. More formally, we study the asymptotic properties of correlation and covariance matrices, in the setting where $p/n\toρ\in(0,\infty),$ for general population covariance. We show that, for a large class of models studied in random matrix theory, spectral properties of large-dimensional correlation matrices are similar to those of large-dimensional covarance matrices. We also derive a Marucenk…
The circular law asserts that if $X_n$ is a $n \times n$ matrix with iid complex entries of mean zero and unit variance, then the empirical spectral distribution of $\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}} X_n$ converges almost surely to the uniform distribution on the unit disk as $n$ tends to infinity. Answering a question of Tao, we prove the circular law for a general class of random block matrices with dependent entries. The proof relies on an inverse-type result for the concentration of linear operators and multilinear forms.
