We consider random matrices of the form $H_N=A_N+U_N B_N U^*_N$, where $A_N$, $B_N$ are two $N$ by $N$ deterministic Hermitian matrices and $U_N$ is a Haar distributed random unitary matrix. We establish a universal Central Limit Theorem for the linear eigenvalue statistics of $H_N$ on all mesoscopic scales inside the regular bulk of the spectrum. The proof is based on studying the characteristic function of the linear eigenvalue statistics, and consists of two main steps: (1) generating Ward identities using the left-translation-invariance of the Haar measure, along with a local law for the resolvent of $H_N$ and analytic subordination properties of the free additive convolution, allow us to derive an explicit formula for the derivative of the characteristic function; (2) a local law for two-point product functions of resolvents is derived using a partial randomness decomposition of the Haar measure. We also prove the corresponding results for orthogonal conjugations.
We prove a universal mesoscopic central limit theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics of a Wigner-type matrix inside the bulk of the spectrum with compactly supported twice continuously differentiable test functions. The main novel ingredient is an optimal local law for the two-point function $T(z,ζ)$ and a general class of related quantities involving two resolvents at nearby spectral parameters.
We consider an $N$ by $N$ real or complex generalized Wigner matrix $H_N$, whose entries are independent centered random variables with uniformly bounded moments. We assume that the variance profile, $s_{ij}:=\mathbb{E} |H_{ij}|^2$, satisfies $\sum_{i=1}^Ns_{ij}=1$, for all $1 \leq j \leq N$ and $c^{-1} \leq N s_{ij} \leq c$ for all $ 1 \leq i,j \leq N$ with some constant $c \geq 1$. We establish Gaussian fluctuations for the linear eigenvalue statistics of $H_N$ on global scales, as well as on all mesoscopic scales up to the spectral edges, with the expectation and variance formulated in term…
We consider $N$ by $N$ deformed Wigner random matrices of the form $X_N=H_N+A_N$, where $H_N$ is a real symmetric or complex Hermitian Wigner matrix and $A_N$ is a deterministic real bounded diagonal matrix. We prove a universal Central Limit Theorem for the linear eigenvalue statistics of $X_N$ for all mesoscopic scales both in the spectral bulk and at regular edges where the global eigenvalue density vanishes as a square root. The method relies on the characteristic function method in [47], local laws for the Green function of $X_N$ in [3, 46, 51] and analytic subordination properties of the…
We study the limiting behavior of smooth linear statistics of the spectrum of random permutation matrices in the mesoscopic regime, when the permutation follows one of the Ewens measures on the symmetric group. If we apply a smooth enough test function $f$ to all the determinations of the eigenangles of the permutations, we get a convergence in distribution when the order of the permutation tends to infinity. Two distinct kinds of limit appear: if $f(0)\neq 0$, we have a central limit theorem with a logarithmic variance, and if $f(0) = 0$, the convergence holds without normalization and the li…
We are interested in two random matrix ensembles related to permutations: the ensemble of permutation matrices following Ewens' distribution of a given parameter $θ>0$, and its modification where entries equal to $1$ in the matrices are replaced by independent random variables uniformly distributed on the unit circle. For the elements of each ensemble, we focus on the random numbers of eigenvalues lying in some specified arcs of the unit circle. We show that for a finite number of fixed arcs, the fluctuation of the numbers of eigenvalues belonging to them is asymptotically Gaussian. Moreover, …
We present some applications of central limit theorems on mesoscopic scales for random matrices. When combined with the recent theory of "homogenization" for Dyson Brownian Motion, this yields the universality of quantities which depend on the behavior of single eigenvalues of Wigner matrices and $β$-ensembles. Among the results we obtain are the Gaussian fluctuations of single eigenvalues for Wigner matrices (without an assumption of 4 matching moments) and classical $β$-ensembles ($β=1, 2, 4$), Gaussian fluctuations of the eigenvalue counting function, and an asymptotic expansion up to order…
We study linear spectral statistics of $N \times N$ Wigner random matrices $\mathcal{H}$ on mesoscopic scales. Under mild assumptions on the matrix entries of $\mathcal{H}$, we prove that after centering and normalizing, the trace of the resolvent $\mathrm{Tr}(\mathcal{H}-z)^{-1}$ converges to a stationary Gaussian process as $N \to \infty$ on scales $N^{-1/3} \ll \mathrm{Im}(z) \ll 1$ and explicitly compute the covariance structure. The limit process is related to certain regularizations of fractional Brownian motion and logarithmically correlated fields appearing in \cite{FKS13}. Finally, we…
We consider the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of small rank perturbations of random $N\times N$ matrices. We allow the rank of perturbation $M$ increases with $N$, and the only assumption is $M=o(N)$. In both additive and multiplicative perturbation models, we prove rigidity results for the outliers of the perturbed random matrices. Based on the rigidity results we derive the empirical distribution of outliers of the perturbed random matrices. We also compute the appropriate projection of eigenvectors corresponding to the outliers of the perturbed random matrices, which are approximate eigenvec…
We prove that the linear statistics of the eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix converge to a universal Gaussian process on all mesoscopic spectral scales, i.e. scales larger than the typical eigenvalue spacing and smaller than the global extent of the spectrum.
We prove that the linear statistics of eigenvalues of $β$-log gasses satisfying the one-cut and off-critical assumption with a potential $V \in C^6(\mathbb{R})$ satisfy a central limit theorem at all mesoscopic scales $α\in (0; 1)$. We prove this for compactly supported test functions $f \in C^5(\mathbb{R})$ using loop equations at all orders along with rigidity estimates.
The purpose of this note is twofold: firstly to improve the known results on variation of extreme eigenvalues of birth and death matrices and random walk matrices; and secondly to progress towards the solution of a thirty years old open problem concerning the variation of eigenvalues of these matrices. Keywords: Birth and death matrices, random walk matrices, eigenvalues, monotonicity
We prove a central limit theorem for the mesoscopic linear statistics of $N\times N$ Wigner matrices $H$ satisfying $\mathbb{E}|H_{ij}|^2=1/N$ and $\mathbb{E} H_{ij}^2= σ/N$, where $σ\in [-1,1]$. We show that on all mesoscopic scales $η$ ($1/N \ll η\ll 1$), the linear statistics of $H$ have a sharp transition at $1-σ\sim η$. As an application, we identify the mesoscopic linear statistics of Dyson's Brownian motion $H_t$ started from a real symmetric Wigner matrix $H_0$ at any nonnegative time $t \in [0,\infty]$. In particular, we obtain the transition from the central limit theorem for GOE to …
We investigate to what extent the microscopic Wigner-Gaudin-Mehta-Dyson (WGMD) (or sine kernel) statistics of random matrix theory remain valid on mesoscopic scales. To that end, we compute the connected two-point spectral correlation function of a Wigner matrix at two mesoscopically separated points. In the mesoscopic regime, density correlations are much weaker than in the microscopic regime. Our result is an explicit formula for the two-point function. This formula implies that the WGMD statistics are valid to leading order on all mesoscopic scales, that in the real symmetric case there are…
We study linear eigenvalue statistics of band Hankel matrices with Brownian motion entries. We prove that, the centred, normalized linear eigenvalue statistics of band Hankel matrices obey a central limit theorem (CLT) type result. We also discuss the convergence of linear eigenvalue statistics of band Hankel matrices with independent entries for odd power monomials. Our method is based on trace formula, moment method and some results of process convergence.
We compute the limiting eigenvalue statistics at the edge of the spectrum of large Hermitian random matrices perturbed by the addition of small rank deterministic matrices. To be more precise, we consider random Hermitian matrices with independent Gaussian entries $M_{ij}, i\leq j$ with various expectations. We prove that the largest eigenvalue of such random matrices exhibits, in the large $N$ limit, various limiting distributions depending on both the eigenvalues of the matrix $(\mathbb{E}M_{ij})_{i,j=1}^N$ and its rank.
In this paper, we consider the universality of the local eigenvalue statistics of random matrices. Our main result shows that these statistics are determined by the first four moments of the distribution of the entries. As a consequence, we derive the universality of eigenvalue gap distribution and $k$-point correlation and many other statistics (under some mild assumptions) for both Wigner Hermitian matrices and Wigner real symmetric matrices.
This article focuses on linear eigenvalue statistics of Hankel matrices with independent entries. Using the convergence of moments we show that the linear eigenvalue statistics of Hankel matrices for odd degree monomials with degree greater than or equal to three does not converge in distribution to a Gaussian random variable. This result is a departure from the known results, Liu, Sun and Wang (2012), Kumar and Maurya (2022), of linear eigenvalue statistics of Hankel matrices for even degree monomial test functions, where the limits were Gaussian random variables.
We prove the Central Limit Theorem for finite-dimensional vectors of linear eigenvalue statistics of submatrices of Wigner random matrices under the assumption that test functions are sufficiently smooth. We connect the asymptotic covariance to a family of correlated Gaussian Free Fields.
We establish a moderate deviation principle (MDP) for the number of eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix in an interval. The proof relies on fine asymptotics of the variance of the eigenvalue counting function of GUE matrices due to Gustavsson. The extension to large families of Wigner matrices is based on the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem and applies localization results by Erdös, Yau and Yin. Moreover we investigate families of covariance matrices as well.
Since E.P.Wigner (1958) established his famous semicircle law, lots of attention has been paid by physicists, probabilists and statisticians to study the asymptotic properties of the largest eigenvalues for random matrices. Bai and Yin (1988) obtained the necessary and sufficient conditions for the strong convergence of the extreme eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix. In this paper, we consider the case of quaternion self-dual Hermitian matrices. We prove the necessary and sufficient conditions for the strong convergence of extreme eigenvalues of quaternion self-dual Hermitian matrices correspondin…
We analyze the largest eigenvalue statistics of m-dependent heavy-tailed Wigner matrices as well as the associated sample covariance matrices having entry-wise regularly varying tail distributions with parameter $0<α<4$. Our analysis extends results in the previous literature for the corresponding random matrices with independent entries above the diagonal, by allowing for m-dependence between the entries of a given matrix. We prove that the limiting point process of extreme eigenvalues is a Poisson cluster process.
We compute exact asymptotic of the statistical density of random matrices belonging to invariant random matrices ensemble (RMT) orthogonal, unitary and symplectic ensembles, where all its eigenvalues lie within the interval $[σ, +\infty[$ or $]-\infty,τ]$ or $[σ,τ]$. It is found that the density of eigenvalues generically exhibits an inverse square-root singularity at the location of the barriers. These results generalized the case of Gaussian random matrices ensemble studied by Dean-Majumdar.
The purpose of this note is to establish a Central Limit Theorem for the number of eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix in an interval. The proof relies on the correct aymptotics of the variance of the eigenvalue counting function of GUE matrices due to Gustavsson, and its extension to large families of Wigner matrices by means of the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem and recent localization results by Erdös, Yau and Yin.
We consider a square random matrix of size $N$ of the form $P(Y,A)$ where $P$ is a noncommutative polynomial, $A$ is a tuple of deterministic matrices converging in $\ast$-distribution, when $N$ goes to infinity, towards a tuple $a$ in some $\mathcal{C}^*$-probability space and $Y$ is a tuple of independent matrices with i.i.d. centered entries with variance $1/N$. We investigate the eigenvalues of $P(Y,A)$ outside the spectrum of $P(c,a)$ where $c$ is a circular system which is free from $a$. We provide a sufficient condition to guarantee that these eigenvalues coincide asymptotically with th…
This note presents some central limit theorems for the eigenvalue counting function of Wigner matrices in the form of suitable translations of results by Gustavsson and O'Rourke on the limiting behavior of eigenvalues inside the bulk of the semicircle law for Gaussian matrices. The theorems are then extended to large families of Wigner matrices by the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem. Similar results are developed for covariance matrices.
In this article, we study the fluctuation of linear eigenvalue statistics of symmetric circulant matrices $(SC_n)$ with independent entries which satisfy some moment conditions. We show that $\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}} \Tr ϕ(SC_n)$ obey the central limit theorem (CLT) type result, where $ϕ$ is a nice test function.
We study the statistics of the largest eigenvalues of real symmetric and sample covariance matrices when the entries are heavy tailed. Extending the result obtained by Soshnikov in \cite{Sos1}, we prove that, in the absence of the fourth moment, the top eigenvalues behave, in the limit, as the largest entries of the matrix.
We establish a moderate deviation principle (MDP) for the number of eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix in an interval close to the edge of the spectrum. Moreover we prove a MDP for the $i$th largest eigenvalue close to the edge. The proof relies on fine asymptotics of the variance of the eigenvalue counting function of GUE matrices due to Gustavsson. The extension to large families of Wigner matrices is based on the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem. Possible extensions to other random matrix ensembles are commented.
In this article we study the fluctuation of linear statistics of eigenvalues of circulant, symmetric circulant, reverse circulant and Hankel matrices. We show that the linear spectral statistics of these matrices converges to the Gaussian distribution in total variation norm when the matrices are constructed using i.i.d. normal random variables. We also calculate the limiting variance of the linear spectral statistics for circulant, symmetric circulant and reverse circulant matrices.
In this article, we establish a limiting distribution for eigenvalues of a class of auto-covariance matrices. The same distribution has been found in the literature for a regularized version of these auto-covariance matrices. The original non-regularized auto-covariance matrices are non invertible which introduce supplementary diffculties for the study of their eigenvalues through Girko's Hermitization scheme. The key result in this paper is a new polynomial lower bound for the least singular value of the resolvent matrices associated to a rank-defective quadratic function of a random matrix w…
In this paper we discuss the process convergence of the time dependent fluctuations of linear eigenvalue statistics of random circulant matrices with independent Brownian motion entries, as the dimension of the matrix tends to $\infty $. Our derivation is based on the trace formula of circulant matrix, method of moments and some combinatorial techniques.
This work is concerned with finite range bounds on the variance of individual eigenvalues of Wigner random matrices, in the bulk and at the edge of the spectrum, as well as for some intermediate eigenvalues. Relying on the GUE example, which needs to be investigated first, the main bounds are extended to families of Hermitian Wigner matrices by means of the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem and recent localization results by Erdös, Yau and Yin. The case of real Wigner matrices is obtained from interlacing formulas. As an application, bounds on the expected 2-Wasserstein distance between the empir…
We prove a local law for eigenvalues of the random Hermitian matrices with external source $W_n=\frac{1}{n}X_n+A_n$ where $X_n$ is Wigner matrix and $A_n$ is diagonal matrix with only two values $a, -a$ on the diagonal. The local law is an essential step to prove the universality conjecture for this random matrix model.
In this paper, we explain the dependance of the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalues of a Deformed Wigner model with respect to the eigenvectors of the perturbation matrix. We exhibit quite general situations that will give rise to universality or non universality of the fluctuations.
We prove the first eigenvalue repulsion bound for sparse random matrices. As a consequence, we show that these matrices have simple spectrum, improving the range of sparsity and error probability from the work of the second author and Vu. As an application of our tail bounds, we show that for sparse Erdős--Rényi graphs, weak and strong nodal domains are the same, answering a question of Dekel, Lee, and Linial.
This work is concerned with finite range bounds on the variance of individual eigenvalues of random covariance matrices, both in the bulk and at the edge of the spectrum. In a preceding paper, the author established analogous results for Wigner matrices and stated the results for covariance matrices. They are proved in the present paper. Relying on the LUE example, which needs to be investigated first, the main bounds are extended to complex covariance matrices by means of the Tao, Vu and Wang Four Moment Theorem and recent localization results by Pillai and Yin. The case of real covariance ma…
In his seminal 1962 paper on the ``threefold way'', Freeman Dyson classified the spaces of matrices that support the random matrix ensembles deemed relevant from the point of view of classical quantum mechanics. Recently, Heinzner, Huckleberry and Zirnbauer have obtained a similar classification based on less restrictive assumptions, thus taking care of the needs of modern mesoscopic physics. Their list is in one-to-one correspondence with the infinite families of Riemannian symmetric spaces as classified by Cartan. The present paper develops the corresponding random matrix theories, with a sp…
We consider random n\times n matrices of the form (XX*+YY*)^{-1/2}YY*(XX*+YY*)^{-1/2}, where X and Y have independent entries with zero mean and variance one. These matrices are the natural generalization of the Gaussian case, which are known as MANOVA matrices and which have joint eigenvalue density given by the third classical ensemble, the Jacobi ensemble. We show that, away from the spectral edge, the eigenvalue density converges to the limiting density of the Jacobi ensemble even on the shortest possible scales of order 1/n (up to \log n factors). This result is the analogue of the local …
We give an upper bound on the total variation distance between the linear eigenvalue statistic, properly scaled and centred, of a random matrix with a variance profile and the standard Gaussian random variable. The second order Poincaré inequality type result is used to establish the bound. Using this bound we prove Central limit theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics of random matrices with different kind of variance profiles. We re-establish some existing results on fluctuations of linear eigenvalue statistics of some well known random matrix ensembles by choosing appropriate variance prof…
We study the overlaps between eigenvectors of nonnormal matrices. They quantify the stability of the spectrum, and characterize the joint eigenvalues increments under Dyson-type dynamics. Well known work by Chalker and Mehlig calculated the expectation of these overlaps for complex Ginibre matrices. For the same model, we extend their results by deriving the distribution of diagonal overlaps (the condition numbers), and their correlations. We prove: (i) convergence of condition numbers for bulk eigenvalues to an inverse Gamma distribution; more generally, we decompose the quenched overlap (i.e…
We present a novel approach to study eigenvalues of deformed random matrices. This approach applies to many deformed Gaussian matrix models; two such models are studied in detail: the deformed GOE and the spiked population model.
Large H-selfadjoint random matrices are considered. The matrix $H$ is assumed to have one negative eigenvalue, hence the matrix in question has precisely one eigenvalue of nonpositive type. It is showed that this eigenvalue converges in probability to a deterministic limit. The weak limit of distribution of the real eigenvalues is investigated as well.
This is a brief survey of classical and recent results about the typical behavior of eigenvalues of large random matrices, written for mathematicians and others who study and use matrices but may not be accustomed to thinking about randomness.
We describe the resolvent approach for the rigorous study of the mescoscopic regime of Hermitian matrix spectra. We present results reflecting the universal behavior of the smoothed density of eigenvalue distribution of large random matrices
We study the eigenvalue problem for some special class of anti-triangular matrices. Though the eigenvalue problem is quite classical, as far as we know, almost nothing is known about properties of eigenvalues for anti-triangular matrices. In this paper, we show that there is a nice class of anti-triangular matrices whose eigenvalues are given explicitly by their elements. Moreover, this class contains several interesting subclasses which we characterize in terms of probability measures. We also discuss the application of our main theorem to the study of interacting particle systems, which are …
Random matrices arise in many mathematical contexts, and it is natural to ask about the properties that such matrices satisfy. If we choose a matrix with integer entries at random, for example, what is the probability that it will have a particular integer as an eigenvalue, or an integer eigenvalue at all? If we choose a matrix with real entries at random, what is the probability that it will have a real eigenvalue in a particular interval? The purpose of this paper is to resolve these questions, once they are made suitably precise, in the setting of 2x2 matrices.
The relation between random normal matrices and conformal mappings discovered by Wiegmann and Zabrodin is made rigorous by restricting normal matrices to have spectrum in a bounded set. It is shown that for a suitable class of potentials the asymptotic density of eigenvalues is uniform with support in the interior domain of a simple smooth curve.
We prove a multidimensional extension of Selberg's central limit theorem for $\logζ$, in which non-trivial correlations appear. In particular, this answers a question by Coram and Diaconis about the mesoscopic fluctuations of the zeros of the Riemann zeta function. Similar results are given in the context of random matrices from the unitary group. This shows the correspondence $n \leftrightarrow \log t$ not only between the dimension of the matrix and the height on the critical line, but also, in a local scale, for small deviations from the critical axis or the unit circle.
We prove that few largest (and most important) eigenvalues of random symmetric matrices of various kinds are very strongly concentrated. This strong concentration enables us to compute the means of these eigenvalues with high precision. Our approach uses Talagrand's inequality and is very different from standard approaches.
