We establish a moderate deviation principle (MDP) for the number of eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix in an interval close to the edge of the spectrum. Moreover we prove a MDP for the $i$th largest eigenvalue close to the edge. The proof relies on fine asymptotics of the variance of the eigenvalue counting function of GUE matrices due to Gustavsson. The extension to large families of Wigner matrices is based on the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem. Possible extensions to other random matrix ensembles are commented.
We prove the Central Limit Theorem for finite-dimensional vectors of linear eigenvalue statistics of submatrices of Wigner random matrices under the assumption that test functions are sufficiently smooth. We connect the asymptotic covariance to a family of correlated Gaussian Free Fields.
We prove a universal mesoscopic central limit theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics of a Wigner-type matrix inside the bulk of the spectrum with compactly supported twice continuously differentiable test functions. The main novel ingredient is an optimal local law for the two-point function $T(z,ζ)$ and a general class of related quantities involving two resolvents at nearby spectral parameters.
It is well-known that distances in random iid matrices are highly concentrated around their mean. In this note we extend this concentration phenomenon to Wigner matrices. Exponential bounds for the lower tail are also included.
The eigenvalues for the minors of real symmetric ($β=1$) and complex Hermitian ($β=2$) Wigner matrices form the Wigner corner process, which is a multilevel interlacing particle system. In this paper, we study the microscopic scaling limit of the Wigner corner process both near the spectral edge and in the bulk, and prove they are universal. We show: (i) Near the spectral edge, the corner process exhibit a decoupling phenomenon, as first observed in [24]. Individual extreme particles have Tracy-Widom$_β$ distribution; the spacings between the extremal particles on adjacent levels converge to i…
We prove a large deviation principle for the largest eigenvalue of Wigner matrices without Gaussian tails, namely such that the distribution tails $\mathbb{P}( |X_{1,1}|>t)$ and $\mathbb{P}(|X_{1,2}|>t)$ behave like $e^{-bt^α}$ and $e^{-at^α}$ respectively for some $a,b\in (0,+\infty)$ and $α\in (0,2)$. The large deviation principle is of speed $N^{α/2}$ and with a good rate function depending only on the tail distribution of the entries.
Spectral measures of Wigner matrices are investigated. The Wigner semicircle law for spectral measures is proved. Regard this as the law of large number, the central limit theorem for moments spectral measure is also derived. The proof is based on moment method and combinatorial method.
On the one hand, we prove that almost surely, for large dimension, there is no eigenvalue of a Hermitian polynomial in independent Wigner and deterministic matrices, in any interval lying at some distance from the supports of a sequence of deterministic probability measures, which is computed with the tools of free probability. On the other hand, we establish the strong asymptotic freeness of independent Wigner matrices and any family of deterministic matrices with strong limiting distribution.
Motivated by the stochastic block model, we investigate a class of Wigner-type matrices with certain block structures, and establish a CLT for the corresponding linear spectral statistics via the large-deviation bounds from local law and the cumulant expansion formula. We apply the results to the stochastic block model. Specifically, a class of renormalized adjacency matrices will be block-Wigner-type matrices. Further, we show that for certain estimator of such renormalized adjacency matrices, which will be no longer Wigner-type but share long-range non-decaying weak correlations among the en…
Additive/multiplicative free subordination property and limiting eigenvectors of spiked additive deformations of Wigner matrices and spiked sample covariance matrices
We consider $N$ by $N$ deformed Wigner random matrices of the form $X_N=H_N+A_N$, where $H_N$ is a real symmetric or complex Hermitian Wigner matrix and $A_N$ is a deterministic real bounded diagonal matrix. We prove a universal Central Limit Theorem for the linear eigenvalue statistics of $X_N$ for all mesoscopic scales both in the spectral bulk and at regular edges where the global eigenvalue density vanishes as a square root. The method relies on the characteristic function method in [47], local laws for the Green function of $X_N$ in [3, 46, 51] and analytic subordination properties of the…
We present a large deviation principle at speed N for the largest eigenvalue of some additively deformed Wigner matrices. In particular this includes Gaussian ensembles with full-rank general deformation. For the non-Gaussian ensembles, the deformation should be diagonal, and we assume that the laws of the entries have sharp sub-Gaussian Laplace transforms and satisfy certain concentration properties. For these latter ensembles we establish the large deviation principle in a restricted range $(-\infty, x_c)$, where $x_c$ depends on the deformation only and can be infinite.
We prove that the logarithm of the determinant of a Wigner matrix satisfies a central limit theorem in the limit of large dimension. Previous results about fluctuations of such determinants required that the first four moments of the matrix entries match those of a Gaussian. Our work treats symmetric and Hermitian matrices with centered entries having the same variance and subgaussian tail. In particular, it applies to symmetric Bernoulli matrices and answers an open problem raised by Tao and Vu.
We present large deviations principles for the moments of the empirical spectral measure of Wigner matrices and empirical measure of $β$-ensembles in three cases : the case of Wigner matrices without Gaussian tails, that is Wigner matrices whose entries have tail distributions decreasing as $e^{-ct^α}$, for some constant $c>0$ and with $α\in (0,2)$, the case of Gaussian Wigner matrices, and the case of $β$-ensembles associated with a convex potential with polynomial growth.
We investigate the spectral norms of symmetric $N \times N$ matrices from two pseudo-random ensembles. The first is the pseudo-Wigner ensemble introduced in "Pseudo-Wigner Matrices" by Soloveychik, Xiang and Tarokh and the second is its sample covariance-type analog defined in this work. Both ensembles are defined through the concept of $r$-independence by controlling the amount of randomness in the underlying matrices, and can be constructed from dual BCH codes. We show that when the measure of randomness $r$ grows as $N^ρ$, where $ρ\in (0,1]$ and $\varepsilon > 0$, the norm of the matrices i…
We compute an asymptotic expansion with precision 1/n of the moments of the expected empirical spectral measure of Wigner matrices of size n with independent centered entries. We interpret this expansion as the moments of the addition of the semicircle law and 1/n times an explicit signed measured with null total mass. This signed measure depends only on the second and fourth moments of the entries.
We consider $N\times N$ random matrices of the form $H = W + V$ where $W$ is a real symmetric Wigner matrix and $V$ a random or deterministic, real, diagonal matrix whose entries are independent of $W$. We assume subexponential decay for the matrix entries of $W$ and we choose $V$ so that the eigenvalues of $W$ and $V$ are typically of the same order. For a large class of diagonal matrices $V$ we show that the rescaled distribution of the extremal eigenvalues is given by the Tracy-Widom distribution $F_1$ in the limit of large $N$. Our proofs also apply to the complex Hermitian setting, i.e., …
We investigate the fluctuations around the mean of the Stieltjes transform of the empirical spectral distribution of any selfadjoint noncommutative polynomial in a Wigner matrix and a deterministic diagonal matrix. We obtain the convergence in distribution to a centred complex Gaussian process whose covariance is expressed in terms of operator-valued subordination functions.
We consider an $N$ by $N$ real or complex generalized Wigner matrix $H_N$, whose entries are independent centered random variables with uniformly bounded moments. We assume that the variance profile, $s_{ij}:=\mathbb{E} |H_{ij}|^2$, satisfies $\sum_{i=1}^Ns_{ij}=1$, for all $1 \leq j \leq N$ and $c^{-1} \leq N s_{ij} \leq c$ for all $ 1 \leq i,j \leq N$ with some constant $c \geq 1$. We establish Gaussian fluctuations for the linear eigenvalue statistics of $H_N$ on global scales, as well as on all mesoscopic scales up to the spectral edges, with the expectation and variance formulated in term…
We consider large-dimensional Hermitian or symmetric random matrices of the form $W=M+\vartheta V$ where $M$ is a Wigner matrix and $V$ is a real diagonal matrix whose entries are independent of $M$. For a large class of diagonal matrices $V$, we prove that the fluctuations of linear spectral statistics of $W$ for $C^{2}_{c}$ test function can be decomposed into that of $M$ and of $V$, and that each of those weakly converges to a Gaussian distribution. We also calculate the formulae for the means and variances of the limiting distributions.
The aim of this paper is to provide a novel proof for the Local Semicircle Law for the Wigner ensemble. The core of the proof is the intensive use of the algebraic structure that arises, i.e. resolvent expansions and resolvent identities. On the analytic side, concentration of measure results and high probability bounds are used. The conclusion is obtained using a bootstrapping argument that provides information about the change of the bounds from large to small scales. This approach leads to a new and shorter proof of the Weak Local Law for Wigner Matrices, that exploits heavily the algebraic…
We prove a new CLT for the difference of linear eigenvalue statistics of a Wigner random matrix $H$ and its minor $\hat H$ and find that the fluctuation is much smaller than the fluctuations of the individual linear statistics, as a consequence of the strong correlation between the eigenvalues of $H$ and $\hat H$. In particular our theorem identifies the fluctuation of Kerov's rectangular Young diagrams, defined by the interlacing eigenvalues of $H$ and $\hat H$, around their asymptotic shape, the Vershik-Kerov-Logan-Shepp curve. This result demonstrates yet another aspect of the close connect…
We consider linear spectral statistics of the form $\mathrm{tr} ( φ(H))$ for test functions $φ$ of low regularity and Wigner matrices $H$ with smooth entry distribution. We show that for functions $φ$ in the Sobolev space $H^{1/2+\varepsilon}$ or the space $C^{1/2+\varepsilon}$, that are supported within the spectral bulk of the semicircle distribution, these linear spectral statistics have asymptotic Gaussian fluctuations with the same variance as in the CLT for functions of higher regularity, for any $\varepsilon >0$.
We show that the variance of centred linear statistics of eigenvalues of GUE matrices remains bounded for large $n$ for some classes of test functions less regular than Lipschitz functions. This observation is suggested by the limiting form of the variance (which has previously been computed explicitly), but it does not seem to appear in the literature. We combine this fact with comparison techniques following Tao-Vu and Erdös, Yau, et al. and a Littlewood-Paley type decomposition to extend the central limit theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics to functions in the Hölder class $C^{1/2+ε}$ …
As an important topic in Mathematical Physics and statistics, random matrices theory has found uses in many aspects of modern physics and multivariate analysis. This paper is to investigate the Gaussian fluctuations for linear spectral statistics (LSS) of Wigner beta ensembles. We first establish a central limit theorem (CLT) for LSS of Wigner quaternion matrices, then give a general CLT for Wigner $β$ ensembles.
We prove general nonlinear large deviation estimates similar to Chatterjee-Dembo's original bounds except that we do not require any second order smoothness. Our approach relies on convex analysis arguments and is valid for a broad class of distributions. Our results are then applied in three different setups. Our first application consists in the mean-field approximation of the partition function of the Ising model under an optimal assumption on the spectra of the adjacency matrices of the sequence of graphs. Next, we apply our general large deviation bound to investigate the large deviation …
We prove that the linear statistics of the eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix converge to a universal Gaussian process on all mesoscopic spectral scales, i.e. scales larger than the typical eigenvalue spacing and smaller than the global extent of the spectrum.
We consider a Wigner-type ensemble, i.e. large hermitian $N\times N$ random matrices $H=H^*$ with centered independent entries and with a general matrix of variances $S_{xy}=\mathbb E|H_{xy}|^2$. The norm of $H$ is asymptotically given by the maximum of the support of the self-consistent density of states. We establish a bound on this maximum in terms of norms of powers of $S$ that substantially improves the earlier bound $2\| S\|^{1/2}_\infty$ given in [arXiv:1506.05098]. The key element of the proof is an effective Markov chain approximation for the contributions of the weighted Dyck paths a…
We study linear spectral statistics of $N \times N$ Wigner random matrices $\mathcal{H}$ on mesoscopic scales. Under mild assumptions on the matrix entries of $\mathcal{H}$, we prove that after centering and normalizing, the trace of the resolvent $\mathrm{Tr}(\mathcal{H}-z)^{-1}$ converges to a stationary Gaussian process as $N \to \infty$ on scales $N^{-1/3} \ll \mathrm{Im}(z) \ll 1$ and explicitly compute the covariance structure. The limit process is related to certain regularizations of fractional Brownian motion and logarithmically correlated fields appearing in \cite{FKS13}. Finally, we…
In this paper we analyze the covariance kernel of the Gaussian process that arises as the limit of fluctuations of linear spectral statistics for Wigner matrices with a few moments. More precisely, the process we study here corresponds to Hermitian matrices with independent entries that have $α$ moments for $2<α< 4$. We obtain a closed form $α$-dependent expression for the covariance of the limiting process resulting from fluctuations of the Stieltjes transform by explicitly integrating the known double Laplace transform integral formula obtained in the literature. We then express the covarian…
Recently we considered a class of random matrices obtained by choosing distinct codewords at random from linear codes over finite fields and proved that under some natural algebraic conditions their empirical spectral distribution converges to Wigner's semicircle law as the length of the codes goes to infinity. One of the conditions is that the dual distance of the codes is at least 5. In this paper, employing more advanced techniques related to Stieltjes transform, we show that the dual distance being at least 5 is sufficient to ensure the convergence, and the convergence rate is of the form …
We investigate the fluctuations of linear spectral statistics of a Wigner matrix $W\_N$ deformed by a deterministic diagonal perturbation $D\_N$, around a deterministic equivalent which can be expressed in terms of the free convolution between a semicircular distribution and the empirical spectral measure of $D\_N$. We obtain Gaussian fluctuations for test functions in $\mathcal{C}\_c^7(\mathbb{R})$ ($\mathcal{C}\_c^2(\mathbb{R})$ for fluctuations around the mean). Furthermore, we provide as a tool a general method inspired from Shcherbina and Johansson to extend the convergence of the bias if…
We consider $N\times N$ random matrices of the form $H=W+V$ where $W$ is a real symmetric or complex Hermitian Wigner matrix and $V$ is a random or deterministic, real, diagonal matrix whose entries are independent of $W$. We assume subexponential decay for the matrix entries of $W$, and we choose $V$ so that the eigenvalues of $W$ and $V$ are typically of the same order. For a large class of diagonal matrices $V$, we show that the local statistics in the bulk of the spectrum are universal in the limit of large $N$.
We present an alternative proof of asymptotic freeness of independent sample covariance matrices, when the dimension and the sample size grow at the same rate, by embedding these matrices into Wigner matrices of a larger order and using asymptotic freeness of independent Wigner and deterministic matrices.
We prove the universal asymptotically almost sure non-singularity of general Ginibre and Wigner ensembles of random matrices when the distribution of the entries are independent but not necessarily identically distributed and may depend on the size of the matrix. These models include adjacency matrices of random graphs and also sparse, generalized, universal and banded random matrices. We find universal rates of convergence and precise estimates for the probability of singularity which depend only on the size of the biggest jump of the distribution functions governing the entries of the matrix…
We introduce a method for the comparison of some extremal eigenvalue statistics of random matrices. For example, it allows one to compare the maximal eigenvalue gap in the bulk of two generalized Wigner ensembles, provided that the first four moments of their matrix entries match. As an application, we extend results of Bourgade--Ben Arous and Feng--Wei that identify the limit of the maximal eigenvalue gap in the bulk of the GUE to all complex Hermitian generalized Wigner matrices.
