In his seminal 1962 paper on the ``threefold way'', Freeman Dyson classified the spaces of matrices that support the random matrix ensembles deemed relevant from the point of view of classical quantum mechanics. Recently, Heinzner, Huckleberry and Zirnbauer have obtained a similar classification based on less restrictive assumptions, thus taking care of the needs of modern mesoscopic physics. Their list is in one-to-one correspondence with the infinite families of Riemannian symmetric spaces as classified by Cartan. The present paper develops the corresponding random matrix theories, with a special emphasis on large deviation principles.
We prove that the linear statistics of eigenvalues of $β$-log gasses satisfying the one-cut and off-critical assumption with a potential $V \in C^6(\mathbb{R})$ satisfy a central limit theorem at all mesoscopic scales $α\in (0; 1)$. We prove this for compactly supported test functions $f \in C^5(\mathbb{R})$ using loop equations at all orders along with rigidity estimates.
We give a simple proof of a central limit theorem for linear statistics of the Circular beta-ensembles which is valid at almost arbitrary mesoscopic scale and for functions of class C^3. As a consequence, using a coupling introduced by Valko and Virag, we deduce a central limit theorem for the Sine beta processes. We also discuss the connection between our result and the theory of Gaussian Multiplicative Chaos. Based on the results of Lambert-Ostrovsky-Simm, we show that the exponential of the logarithm of the real (and imaginary) part of the characteristic polynomial of the Circular beta-ense…
We prove that the fluctuations of mesocopic linear statistics for orthogonal polynomial ensembles are universal in the sense that two measures with asymptotic recurrence coefficients have the same asymptotic mesoscopic fluctuations (under an additional assumption on the local regularity of one of the measures). The convergence rate of the recurrence coefficients determines the range of scales on which the limiting fluctuations are identical. Our main tool is an analysis of the Green's function for the associated Jacobi matrices. As a particular consequence we obtain a Central Limit Theorem for…
We are interested in two random matrix ensembles related to permutations: the ensemble of permutation matrices following Ewens' distribution of a given parameter $θ>0$, and its modification where entries equal to $1$ in the matrices are replaced by independent random variables uniformly distributed on the unit circle. For the elements of each ensemble, we focus on the random numbers of eigenvalues lying in some specified arcs of the unit circle. We show that for a finite number of fixed arcs, the fluctuation of the numbers of eigenvalues belonging to them is asymptotically Gaussian. Moreover, …
We present some applications of central limit theorems on mesoscopic scales for random matrices. When combined with the recent theory of "homogenization" for Dyson Brownian Motion, this yields the universality of quantities which depend on the behavior of single eigenvalues of Wigner matrices and $β$-ensembles. Among the results we obtain are the Gaussian fluctuations of single eigenvalues for Wigner matrices (without an assumption of 4 matching moments) and classical $β$-ensembles ($β=1, 2, 4$), Gaussian fluctuations of the eigenvalue counting function, and an asymptotic expansion up to order…
In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of mesoscopic fluctuations for the thinned Circular Unitary Ensemble. The effect of thinning is that the eigenvalues start to decorrelate. The decorrelation is stronger on the larger scales than on the smaller scales. We investigate this behavior by studying mesoscopic linear statistics. There are two regimes depending on the scale parameter and the thinning parameter. In one regime we obtain a CLT of a classical type and in the other regime we retrieve the CLT for CUE. The two regimes are separated by a critical line. On the critical line the lim…
Considering a determinantal point process on the real line, we establish a connection between the sine-kernel asymptotics for the correlation kernel and the CLT for mesoscopic linear statistics. This implies universality of mesoscopic fluctuations for a large class of unitary invariant Hermitian ensembles. In particular, this shows that the support of the equilibrium measure need not be connected in order to see Gaussian fluctuations at mesoscopic scales. Our proof is based on the cumulants computations introduced in [48] for the CUE and the sine process and the asymptotics formulae derived by…
We establish various small deviation inequalities for the extremal (soft edge) eigenvalues in the beta-Hermite and beta-Laguerre ensembles. In both settings, upper bounds on the variance of the largest eigenvalue of the anticipated order follow immediately.
We study the statistical mechanics of the log-gas, or $β$-ensemble, for general potential and inverse temperature. By means of a bootstrap procedure, we prove local laws on the next order energy that are valid down to microscopic length scales. To our knowledge, this is the first time that this kind of a local quantity has been controlled for the log-gas. Simultaneously, we exhibit a control on fluctuations of linear statistics that is valid at all mesoscales. Using these local laws, we are able to exhibit for the first time a CLT at arbitrary mesoscales, improving upon a previous result of Be…
We continue to explore the connections between large deviations for objects coming from random matrix theory and sum rules. This connection was established in [17] for spectral measures of classical ensembles (Gauss-Hermite, Laguerre, Jacobi) and it was extended to spectral matrix measures of the Hermite and Laguerre ensemble in [20]. In this paper, we consider the remaining case of spectral matrix measures of the Jacobi ensemble. Our main results are a large deviation principle for such measures and a sum rule for matrix measures with reference measure the Kesten-McKay law. As an important in…
In this paper we show weak convergence of the empirical eigenvalue distribution and of the weighted spectral measure of the Jacobi ensemble, when one or both parameters grow faster than the dimension $n$. In these cases the limit measure is given by the Marchenko-Pastur law and the semicircle law, respectively. For the weighted spectral measure we also prove large deviation principles under this scaling, where the rate functions are those of the other classical ensembles.
For beta ensembles with convex poynomial potentials, we prove a large deviation principle for the empirical spectral distribution seen from the rightmost particle. This modified spectral distribution was introduced by Perret and Schehr (J. Stat. Phys. 2014) to study the crowding near the maximal eigenvalue, in the case of the GUE. We prove also convergence of fluctuations.
We consider the Gaussian beta-ensemble when $β$ scales with $n$ the number of particles such that $\displaystyle{{n}^{-1}\ll β\ll 1}$. Under a certain regime for $β$, we show that the largest particle satisfies a large deviations principle in $\mathbb{R}$ with speed $nβ$ and explicit rate function. As a consequence, the largest particle converges in probability to $2$, the rightmost point of the semicircle law.
We study the limiting behavior of the $k$-th eigenvalue $x_k$ of unitary invariant ensembles with Freud-type and uniform convex potentials. As both $k$ and $n-k$ tend to infinity, we obtain Gaussian fluctuations for $x_k$ in the bulk and soft edge cases, respectively. Multi-dimensional central limit theorems, as well as moderate deviations, are also proved. This work generalizes earlier results in the GUE and unitary invariant ensembles with monomial potentials of even degree. In particular, we obtain the precise asymptotics of corresponding Christoffel-Darboux kernels as well.
We consider discrete $β$-ensembles, as introduced by Borodin, Gorin and Guionnet in (Publications math{\' e}matiques de l'IH{\' E}S 125, 1-78, 2017). Under general assumptions, we establish a large deviation principle for the empirical (or spectral) measures corresponding to these models. Our results apply in the cases when the potential of the model depends on the number of particles, and/or has slow growth near infinity, leading to an equilibrium measure with infinite support.
In this paper we consider the (weighted) spectral measure $μ_n$ of a $n\times n$ random matrix, distributed according to a classical Gaussian, Laguerre or Jacobi ensemble, and show a moderate deviation principle for the standardised signed measure $\sqrt{n/a_n}(μ_n -σ)$. The centering measure $σ$ is the weak limit of the empirical eigenvalue distribution and the rate function is given in terms of the $L^2$-norm of the density with respect to $σ$. The proof involves the tridiagonal representations of the ensembles which provide us with a sequence of independent random variables and a link to or…
For Y a subset of the complex plane,a beta ensemble is a sequence of probability measures on Y^n for n=1,2,3...depending on a real-valued continuous function Q and a real positive parameter beta.We consider the associated sequence of probability measures on Y where the probability of a subset W is given by the probability that at least one coordinate of Y^n belongs to W. With appropriate restrictions on Y,Q we prove a large deviation principle for this sequence of measures. This extends a result of Borot-Guionnet to subsets of the complex plane and to beta ensembles defined with measures using…
We establish a moderate deviations principle (MDP) for the log-determinant $\log | \det (M_n) |$ of a Wigner matrix $M_n$ matching four moments with either the GUE or GOE ensemble. Further we establish Cramér--type moderate deviations and Berry-Esseen bounds for the log-determinant for the GUE and GOE ensembles as well as for non-symmetric and non-Hermitian Gaussian random matrices (Ginibre ensembles), respectively.
We extend our results on the fluctuation of the pair counting statistic of the Circular Beta Ensemble $\sum_{i\neq j}f(L_N(θ_i-θ_j))$ for arbitrary $β>0$ in the mesoscopic regime $L_N=O(N^{2/3-ε})$.
We investigate the random eigenvalues coming from the beta-Laguerre ensemble with parameter p, which is a generalization of the real, complex and quaternion Wishart matrices of parameter (n,p). In the case that the sample size n is much smaller than the dimension of the population distribution p, a common situation in modern data, we approximate the beta-Laguerre ensemble by a beta-Hermite ensemble which is a generalization of the real, complex and quaternion Wigner matrices. As corollaries, when n is much smaller than p, we show that the largest and smallest eigenvalues of the complex Wishart…
We present a large deviation principle at speed N for the largest eigenvalue of some additively deformed Wigner matrices. In particular this includes Gaussian ensembles with full-rank general deformation. For the non-Gaussian ensembles, the deformation should be diagonal, and we assume that the laws of the entries have sharp sub-Gaussian Laplace transforms and satisfy certain concentration properties. For these latter ensembles we establish the large deviation principle in a restricted range $(-\infty, x_c)$, where $x_c$ depends on the deformation only and can be infinite.
For the last passage percolation (LPP) on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with exponential passage times, let $T_{n}$ denote the passage time from $(1,1)$ to $(n,n)$. We investigate the law of iterated logarithm of the sequence $\{T_{n}\}_{n\geq 1}$; we show that $\liminf_{n\to \infty} \frac{T_{n}-4n}{n^{1/3}(\log \log n)^{1/3}}$ almost surely converges to a deterministic negative constant and obtain some estimates on the same. This settles a conjecture of Ledoux (J. Theor. Probab., 2018) where a related lower bound and similar results for the corresponding upper tail were proved. Our proof relies on a slight …
This work is a companion paper of Gamboa, Nagel, Rouault (J. Funct. Anal. 2016). We continue to explore the connections between large deviations for random objects issued from random matrix theory and sum rules. Here, we are concerned essentially with measures on the unit circle whose support is an arc that is possibly proper. We particularly focus on two matrix models. The first one is the Gross-Witten ensemble. In the gapped regime we give a probabilistic interpretation of a Simon sum rule. The second matrix model is the Hua-Pickrell ensemble. Unlike the Gross-Witten ensemble the potential i…
We establish a large deviation principle for the largest eigenvalue of a rank one deformation of a matrix from the GUE or GOE. As a corollary, we get another proof of the phenomenon, well-known in learning theory and finance, that the largest eigenvalue separates from the bulk if the perturbation is large enough. A large part of the paper is devoted to an auxiliary result on the continuity of spherical integrals, in the case when one of the matrix is of rank one, as studied in a previous work.
We develop a unified theory to analyze the microcanonical ensembles with several constraints given by unbounded observables. Several interesting phenomena that do not occur in the single constraint case can happen under the multiple constraints case. We systematically analyze the detailed structures of such microcanonical ensembles in two orthogonal directions using the theory of large deviations. First of all, we establish the equivalence of ensembles result, which exhibits an interesting phase transition phenomenon. Secondly, we study the localization and delocalization phenomena by obtainin…
We consider a general class of statistical mechanical models of coherent structures in turbulence, which includes models of two-dimensional fluid motion, quasi-geostrophic flows, and dispersive waves. First, large deviation principles are proved for the canonical ensemble and the microcanonical ensemble. For each ensemble the set of equilibrium macrostates is defined as the set on which the corresponding rate function attains its minimum of 0. We then present complete equivalence and nonequivalence results at the level of equilibrium macrostates for the two ensembles.
This note provides a large deviations principle for a class of biorthogonal ensembles. We extend the results of Eichelsbacher, Sommerauer and Stotlz to more general type of interactions. Our result covers the case of the singular values of lower triangular random matrices with independent entries introduced by Cheliotis. In particular, we obtain as a consequence a variational formulation for the Dykema-Haagerup as it is the limit law for the singular values of lower triangular matrices with i.i.d. complex Gaussian entries.
In this paper, we present a novel extension to the classical path coupling method to statistical mechanical models which we refer to as aggregate path coupling. In conjunction with large deviations estimates, we use this aggregate path coupling method to prove rapid mixing of Glauber dynamics for a large class of statistical mechanical models, including models that exhibit discontinuous phase transitions which have traditionally been more difficult to analyze rigorously. The parameter region for rapid mixing for the generalized Curie-Weiss-Potts model is derived as a new application of the agg…
A two-dimensional statistical model of N charged particles interacting via logarithmic repulsion in the presence of an oppositely charged regular closed region K whose charge density is determined by its equilibrium potential at an inverse temperature βis investigated. When the charge on the region, s, is greater than N, the particles accumulate in a neighborhood of the boundary of K, and form a point process in the complex plane. We describe the weak* limits of the joint intensities of this point process and show that it is exponentially likely to find the process in a neighborhood of the equ…
