Let E/k be an elliptic curve over a number field. We obtain some quantitative refinements of results of Hindry-Silverman, giving an upper bound for the number of k-rational torsion points, and a lower bound for the canonical height of non-torsion k-rational points, in terms of expressions depending explicitly on the degree of k and the Szpiro ratio of E/k. The bounds exhibit only polynomial dependence on both quantities.
In this paper I demonstrate that any pair (m, n) of non-zero and distinct rational numbers may have, at most, four representations as the product of two rational factors such that the sum of factors of m coincides with the sum of factors of n. In the second part of the paper I derive the properties of elliptic curves such that the cubic has rational roots that satisfy this property
We prove that a positive proportion of squarefree integers are congruent numbers such that the canonical height of the lowest non-torsion rational point on the corresponding elliptic curve satisfies a strong lower bound.
In this note we give an algorithm to explicitly construct the modular parametrization of an elliptic curve over the rationals given the Weierstrass function $\wp (z)$.
We obtain new results concerning the Sato--Tate conjecture on the distribution of Frobenius angles over parametric families of elliptic curves with a rational parameter of bounded height.
We give a complete characterization for the rational torsion of an elliptic curve in terms of the (non-)existence of integral solutions of a system of diophantine equations.
We generalize a result of Frey [Fre88] on the Selmer group of twists of elliptic curves over Q with Q-rational torsion points to elliptic curves defined over number fields of small degree K with a K-rational point. We also provide examples of elliptic curves coming from [Zyw15] that satisfy the conditions of our Theorem B.
Rational Diophantine triples, i.e. rationals a,b,c with the property that ab+1, ac+1, bc+1 are perfect squares, are often used in construction of elliptic curves with high rank. In this paper, we consider the opposite problem and ask how small can be the rank of elliptic curves induced by rational Diophantine triples. It is easy to find rational Diophantine triples with elements with mixed signs which induce elliptic curves with rank 0. However, the problem of finding such examples of rational Diophantine triples with positive elements is much more challenging, and we will provide the first su…
If P is an algebraic point on a commutative group scheme A/K, then P is _almost_rational_ if no two non-trivial Galois conjugates sigma(P), tau(P), have sum equal to 2P. In this paper, we classify almost rational torsion points on semistable elliptic curves over Q.
We consider elliptic surfaces whose coefficients are degree $2$ polynomials in a variable $T$. It was recently shown that for infinitely many rational values of $T$ the resulting elliptic curves have rank at least $1$. In this article, we prove that the Mordell-Weil rank of each such elliptic surface is at most $6$ over $\mathbb Q$. In fact, we show that the Mordell-Weil rank of these elliptic surfaces is controlled by the number of zeros of a certain polynomial over $\mathbb Q$.
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve over the rational numbers. It is known, by the work of Bombieri and Zannier, that if $E$ has full rational $2$-torsion, the number $N_E(B)$ of rational points with Weil height bounded by $B$ is $\exp\left(O\left(\frac{\log B}{\sqrt{\log\log B}}\right)\right)$. In this paper we exploit the method of descent via $2$-isogeny to extend this result to elliptic curves with just one nontrivial rational $2$-torsion point. Moreover, we make use of a result of Petsche to derive the stronger upper bound $N_{E}(B) = \exp\left(O\left(\frac{\log B}{\log\log B}\right)\…
In this article we present a characterization of elliptic curves defined over a finite field Fq which possess a rational subgroup of order three. There are two posible cases depending on the rationality of the points in these groups. We show that for finite fields Fq, q= -1 mod 3, all elliptic curves with a point of order 3, they have another rational subgroup whose points are not defined over the finite field. If q = 1 mod 3, this is no true; but there exits a one to one correspondence between curves with points of order 3 and curves with rational subgroups whose points are not rational.
We prove that the family $\mathcal{I}_{F_0}$ of elliptic curves over number fields that are geometrically isogenous to an elliptic curve with $F_0$-rational $j$-invariant is typically bounded in torsion. Under an additional uniformity assumption, we also prove that the family $\mathcal{I}_{d_0}$ of elliptic curves over number fields that are geometrically isogenous to an elliptic curve with degree $d_0$ $j$-invariant is typically bounded in torsion.
In this paper, the proof of the existence of a rational point on an elliptic curve is transformed into the proof of the existence of an integer solution for a Diophantine equation. By a new formula for calculating the number of elements in intersection of two finite sets, a necessary and sufficient condition for existence of a rational point on an elliptic curve is established. This condition is different from L-function in the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture.
We show that two ordinary isogenous elliptic curves have isomorphic groups of rational points if they have the same $j$-invariant and we extend this result to certain isogenous supersingular elliptic curves, namely those with equal $j$-invariant of either 0 or 1728. Using a result by Heuberger and Mazzoli we establish a general case of this relationship within isogenous elliptic curves not necessarily having equal $j$-invariant.
A rational Diophantine triple is a set of three nonzero rational a,b,c with the property that ab+1, ac+1, bc+1 are perfect squares. We say that the elliptic curve y^2 = (ax+1)(bx+1)(cx+1) is induced by the triple {a,b,c}. In this paper, we describe a new method for construction of elliptic curves over Q with reasonably high rank based on a parametrization of rational Diophantine triples. In particular, we construct an elliptic curve induced by a rational Diophantine triple with rank equal to 12, and an infinite family of such curves with rank >= 7, which are both the current records for that k…
The classification of elliptic curves E over the rationals Q is studied according to their torsion subgroups E_{tors}(Q) of rational points. Explicit criteria for the classification are given when E_{tors}(Q) are cyclic groups with even orders. The generator points P of E_{tors}(Q) are also explicitly presented in each case. These results, together with recent results of K. Ono, completely solve the problem of the mentioned explicit classification when E has a rational point of order 2.
In this paper, we consider elliptic curves induced by rational Diophantine quadruples, i.e. sets of four nonzero rationals such that the product of any two of them plus 1 is a perfect square. We show that for each of the groups $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}/k\mathbb{Z}$ for $k = 2, 4, 6, 8$, there are infinitely many rational Diophantine quadruples with the property that the induced elliptic curve has this torsion group. We also construct curves with moderately large rank in each of these four cases.
In this short note we show that the uniform abc-conjecture over number fields puts strong restrictions on the coordinates of rational points on elliptic curves. For the proof we use a variant of the uniform abc-conjecture over number fields formulated by Mochizuki. As an application, we generalize a result of Silverman on elliptic non-Wieferich primes.
The correspondence between right triangles with rational sides, triplets of rational squares in arithmetic succession and integral solutions of certain quadratic forms is well known. We show how this correspondence can be extended to the generalized notions of rational $θ$-triangles, rational squares occurring in arithmetic progressions and concordant forms. In our approach we establish one-to-one mappings to rational points on certain elliptic curves and examine in detail the role of solutions of the $θ$-congruent number problem and the concordant form problem associated with nontrivial torsi…
We classify the possible torsion structures of rational elliptic curves over cubic fields. Along the way we find a previously unknown torsion structure over a cubic field, $\Z /21 \Z$, which corresponds to a sporadic point on $X_1(21)$ of degree 3, which is the lowest possible degree of a sporadic point on a modular curve $X_1(n)$.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, and let $K$ be a number field of degree four that is Galois over $\mathbb{Q}$. The goal of this article is to classify the different isomorphism types of $E(K)_{\text{tors}}$.
Let $C$ be a smooth genus one curve described by a quartic polynomial equation over the rational field $\mathbb Q$ with $P\in C(\mathbb Q)$. We give an explicit criterion for the divisibility-by-$2$ of a rational point on the elliptic curve $(C,P)$. This provides an analogue to the classical criterion of the divisibility-by-$2$ on elliptic curves described by Weierstrass equations. We employ this criterion to investigate the question of extending a rational $D(q)$-quadruple to a quintuple. We give concrete examples to which we can give an affirmative answer. One of these results implies that a…
We consider the structure of rational points on elliptic curves in Weierstrass form. Let x(P)=A_P/B_P^2 denote the $x$-coordinate of the rational point P then we consider when B_P can be a prime power. Using Faltings' Theorem we show that for a fixed power greater than 1, there are only finitely many rational points. Where descent via an isogeny is possible we show, with no restrictions on the power, that there are only finitely many rational points, these points are bounded in number in an explicit fashion, and that they are effectively computable.
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve and let $\mathbb{Q}(D_4^\infty)$ be the compositum of all extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ whose Galois closure has Galois group isomorphic to a quotient of a subdirect product of a finite number of transitive subgroups of $D_4$. In this article we first show that $\mathbb{Q}(D_4^\infty)$ is in fact the compositum of all $D_4$ extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ and then we prove that the torsion subgroup of $E(\mathbb{Q}(D_4^\infty))$ is finite and determine the 24 possibilities for its structure. We also give a complete classification of the elliptic curves that have…
We explain how recent work on 3-descent and 4-descent for elliptic curves over Q can be combined to search for generators of the Mordell-Weil group of large height. As an application we show that every elliptic curve of prime conductor in the Stein-Watkins database has rank at least as large as predicted by the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer.
We formulate a conjecture about the distribution of the canonical height of the lowest non-torsion rational point on a quadratic twist of a given elliptic curve, as the twist varies. This conjecture seems to be very deep and we can only prove partial results in this direction.
The Shafarevich-Tate and Selmer groups arise in the context of Kummer theory for elliptic curves. The finiteness of the Shafarevich-Tate group of an elliptic curve $E$ over the field of rational numbers is included in the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjectures, and is still an open question. We present an overview of the Shafarevich-Tate and Selmer groups of an elliptic curve in the framework of Galois cohomology. Known results on the finiteness of the Shafarevich-Tate group are mentioned, including results of Coates and Wiles, Rubin, Gross and Zagier, and Kolyvagin. We then prove the vanishing…
A rational perfect cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped whose edges and face diagonals are given by rational numbers and whose space diagonal is equal to unity. It is described by a system of four equations with respect to six variables. The cuboid factor equations were derived from these four equations by symmetrization procedure. They constitute a system of eight polynomial equations, which has been solved parametrically. In the present paper its parametric solution is expressed through intersections or rational and elliptic curves arranged into parametric families.
The family of Euclidean triangles having some fixed perimeter and area can be identified with a subset of points on a nonsingular cubic plane curve, i.e., an elliptic curve; furthermore, if the perimeter and the square of the area are rational, then the curve has rational coordinates and those triangles with rational side lengths correspond to rational points on the curve. We first recall this connection, and then we develop hyperbolic analogs. There are interesting relationships between the arithmetic on the elliptic curve (rank and torsion) and the family of triangles living on it. In the hy…
This paper presents a new result concerning the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve with a single point of order two that does not have a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over its two-division field. We prove that at least half of all the quadratic twists of such an elliptic curve have arbitrarily large 2-Selmer rank, showing that the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of such an elliptic curve differs from the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve having either no rational two-torsion o…
By Mazur's Torsion Theorem, there are fourteen possibilities for the non-trivial torsion subgroup $T$ of a rational elliptic curve. For each $T$, such that $E$ may have additive reduction at a prime $p$, we consider a parameterized family $E_T$ of elliptic curves with the property that they parameterize all elliptic curves $E/\mathbb{Q}$ which contain $T$ in their torsion subgroup. Using these parameterized families, we explicitly classify the Kodaira-Néron type, the conductor exponent, and the local Tamagawa number at each prime $p$ where $E/\mathbb{Q}$ has additive reduction. As a consequenc…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over a number field $K$. Descent calculations on $E$ can be used to find upper bounds for the rank of the Mordell-Weil group, and to compute covering curves that assist in the search for generators of this group. The general method of 4-descent, developed in the PhD theses of Siksek, Womack and Stamminger, has been implemented in Magma (when $K={\mathbb Q}$) and works well for elliptic curves with sufficiently small discriminant. By extending work of Bremner and Cassels, we describe the improvements that can be made when $E$ has a rational 2-torsion point. In parti…
We introduce a new generalization of $θ$-congruent numbers by defining the notion of rational $θ$-parallelogram envelope for a positive integer $n$, where $θ\in (0, π)$ is an angle with rational cosine. Then, we study more closely some problems related to the rational $θ$-parallelogram envelopes, using the arithmetic of algebraic curves. Our results generalize the recent work of T.~Ochiai, where only the case $θ=π/2$ was considered. Moreover, we answer the open questions in his paper and their generalizations for any Pythagorean angle.
Let $[K:\mathbb{Q}]=p$ be a prime number and let $E/K$ be an elliptic curve with $j(E) \in \mathbb{Q}$. We determine the all possibilities for $E(K)_{tors}$. We obtain these results by studying Galois representations of $E$ and of it's quadratic twists.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, and let $\mathbb{Q}^{ab}$ be the maximal abelian extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. In this article we classify the groups that can arise as $E(\mathbb{Q}^{ab})_{\text{tors}}$ up to isomorphism. The method illustrates techniques for finding explicit models of modular curves of mixed level structure. Moreover we provide an explicit algorithm to compute $E(\mathbb{Q}^{ab})_{\text{tors}}$ for any elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$.
A family $\mathcal{F}$ of elliptic curves defined over number fields is said to be typically bounded in torsion if the torsion subgroups $E(F)[$tors$]$ of those elliptic curves $E_{/F}\in \mathcal{F}$ can be made uniformly bounded after removing from $\mathcal{F}$ those whose number field degrees lie in a subset of $\mathbb{Z}^+$ with arbitrarily small upper density. For every number field $F$, we prove unconditionally that the family $\mathcal{E}_F$ of elliptic curves defined over number fields and with $F$-rational $j$-invariant is typically bounded in torsion. For any integer $d\in\mathbb{Z…
We consider the practical computation of rational points on y^2=x(x^2+ax+b). The algebra necessary for a 4-descent procedure is described. A simple further descent is then described which only uses integer arithmetic. Numerous examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of this extra descent. Currently, the largest point found has height 51.15 or 102.3, depending on which height normalisation you use.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ such that $\mathrm{End}_{\bar{\mathbb{Q}}}(E)=\mathbb{Z}$ and which admits a non-trivial cyclic $\mathbb{Q}$-isogeny. We prove that, for $p>37$, the residual mod $p$ Galois representation $\barρ_{E,p}:G_{\mathbb{Q}}\rightarrow\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_p)$ is surjective.
Let $C$ be an algebraic curve embedded transversally in a power $E^N$ of an elliptic curve $E$. In this article we produce a good explicit bound for the height of all the algebraic points on $C$ contained in the union of all proper algebraic subgroups of $E^N$. The method gives a totally explicit version of the Manin-Dam'janenko Theorem in the elliptic case and it is a generalisation of previous results only proved when $E$ does not have Complex Multiplication.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb Q$. Let $Γ$ be a subgroup of $E(\mathbb Q)$ and $P\in E(\mathbb Q)$. In [1], it was proved that if $E$ has no nontrivial rational torsion points, then $P\inΓ$ if and only if $P\in Γ$ mod $p$ for finitely many primes $p$. In this note, assuming the General Riemann Hypothesis, we provide an explicit upper bound on these primes when $E$ does not have complex multiplication and either $E$ is a semistable curve or $E$ has no exceptional prime.
In [2], the author claims that the fields $\mathbb{Q}(D_4^\infty)$ defined in the paper and the compositum of all $D_4$ extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ coincide. The proof of this claim depends on a misreading of a celebrated result by Shafarevich. The purpose is to salvage the main results of [2]. That is, the classification of torsion structures of $E$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ when base changed to the compositum of all $D_4$ extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ main results of [2]. All the main results in [2] are still correct except that we are no longer able to prove that these two fields are equal.
Let $E_1$ and $E_2$ be elliptic curves in Legendre form with integer parameters. We show there exists a constant $C$ such that for almost all primes, for all but at most $C$ pairs of points on the reduction of $E_1 \times E_2$ modulo $p$ having equal $x$ coordinate, at least one among $P_1$ and $P_2$ has a large group order. We also show similar abundance over finite fields of elements whose images under the reduction modulo $p$ of a finite set of rational functions have large multiplicative orders
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve and let $\mathbb{Q}(3^\infty)$ be the compositum of all cubic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$. In this article we show that the torsion subgroup of $E(\mathbb{Q}(3^\infty))$ is finite and determine 20 possibilities for its structure, along with a complete description of the $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$-isomorphism classes of elliptic curves that fall into each case. We provide rational parameterizations for each of the 16 torsion structures that occur for infinitely many $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$-isomorphism classes of elliptic curves, and a complete list of $j$-inv…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\Q$, and let $G$ be the torsion group $E(K)_{tors}$ for some cubic field $K$ which does not occur over $\Q$. In this paper, we determine over which types of cubic number fields (cyclic cubic, non-Galois totally real cubic, complex cubic or pure cubic) $G$ can occur, and if so, whether it can occur infinitely often or not. Moreover, if it occurs, we provide elliptic curves $E/\Q$ together with cubic fields $K$ so that $G= E(K)_{tors}$.

Given a set $S$ of elements in a number field $k$, we discuss the existence of planar algebraic curves over $k$ which possess rational points whose $x$-coordinates are exactly the elements of $S$. If the size $|S|$ of $S$ is either $4,5$, or $6$, we exhibit infinite families of (twisted) Edwards curves and (general) Huff curves for which the elements of $S$ are realized as the $x$-coordinates of rational points on these curves. This generalizes earlier work on progressions of certain types on some algebraic curves.
