The goal of this note is to spell out the (apparently well-known and intuitively clear) notion of abelian category over an algebraic stack. In the future we will discuss the (much less evident) notion, when instead of an abelian category one considers a triangulated one.
We define the derived category of quasi--coherent modules for certain Artin stacks as the homotopy category of two Quillen monoidal model structures on the corresponding category of unbounded complexes of quasi--coherent modules.
Let $\mathbf{X}$ be an Adams geometric stack. We show that $D(A_{qc}(\mathbf{X}))$, its derived category of quasi-coherent sheaves, satisfies the axioms of a stable homotopy category defined by Hovey, Palmieri and Strickland. Moreover we show how this structure relates to the derived category of comodules over a Hopf algebroid that determines $\mathbf{X}$.
We study the category of KM fans - a "stacky" generalization of the category of fans considered in toric geometry - and its various realization functors to "geometric" categories. The "purest" such realization takes the form of a functor from KM fans to the 2-category of stacks over the category of fine fans, in the "characteristic-zero-étale" topology. In the algebraic setting, over a field of characteristic zero, we have a realization functor from KM fans to (log) Deligne-Mumford stacks. We prove that this realization functor gives rise to an equivalence of categories between (lattice) KM fa…
The goal of the paper is to show that the (derived) category of D-modules on the stack Bun_G(X) is compactly generated. Here X is a smooth complete curve, and G is a reductive group. The problem is that Bun_G(X) is not quasi-compact, so the above compact generation is not automatic. The proof is based on the following observation: Bun_G(X) can be written as a union of quasi-compact open substacks, which are "co-truncative", i.e., the j_! extension functor is defined on the entire category of D-modules.
We develop a theory of perfect algebraic stacks that extend our theory of perfect algebraic spaces in arXiv:2303.07672, arXiv:2303.08502 to the setting of algebraic stacks. We prove several desired properties of perfect algebraic stacks. This extends some previous results of perfect schemes and perfect algebraic spaces, including the recent one developed by Bertapelle et al. in arXiv:1611.02060. Moreover, our theory extends the previous one developed by Xinwen Zhu in arXiv:1707.05700. Our method to define perfect algebraic stacks differs from all previous approaches, as we utilize representabi…
In the paper we answer the following question: for a morphism of varieties (or, more generally, stacks), when the derived category of the base can be recovered from the derived category of the covering variety by means of descent theory? As a corollary, we show that for an action of a reductive group on a scheme, the derived category of equivariant sheaves is equivalent to the category of objects, equipped with an action of the group, in the ordinary derived category.
We define an Artin stack which may be considered as a substitute for the non-existing (or empty) moduli space of stable two-pointed curves of genus zero. We show that this Artin stack can be viewed as the first term of a cyclic operad in the category of stacks. Applying the homology functor we obtain a linear cyclic operad. We formulate conjectures which assert that cohomology of a smooth projective variety has the structure of an algebra over this homology operad and that gravitational quantum cohomology can naturally expressed in terms of this algebra. As a test for these conjectures we show…
In this paper, we prove that there exists an equivalence between 2-category of smooth Deligne-Mumford stacks with torus-embeddings and actions, and the 1-category of stacky fans. For this purpose, we obtain two main results. The first is to investigate a combinatorial aspect of the 2-category of toric algebraic stacks defined in \cite{I2}. We establish an equivalence between the 2-category of toric algebraic stacks and the 1-category of stacky fans. The second is to give a geometric characterization theorem for toric algebraic stacks.
The category of unital (unbounded) dg cocommutative coalgebras over a field of characteristic zero is provided with a structure of simplicial closed model category. This generalizes the model structure defined by Quillen in 1969 for 2-reduced coalgebras. In our case, the notion of weak equivalence is structly stronger than that of quasi-isomorphism. A pair of adjoint functors connecting the category of coalgebras with the category of dg Lie algebras, induces an equivalence of the corresponding homotopy categories. The model category structure allows one to consider dg coalgebras as very genera…
We study matrix factorizations of a section W of a line bundle on an algebraic stack. We relate the corresponding derived category (the category of D-branes of type B in the Landau-Ginzburg model with potential W) with the singularity category of the zero locus of W generalizing a theorem of Orlov. We use this result to construct push-forward functors for matrix factorizations with relatively proper support.
This is an expository article on the theory of algebraic stacks. After introducing the general theory, we concentrate in the example of the moduli stack of vector budles, giving a detailed comparison with the moduli scheme obtained via geometric invariant theory.
We show that the Hilbert functor of points on an arbitrary separated algebraic stack is an algebraic space. We also show the algebraicity of the Hilbert stack of points on an algebraic stack and the algebraicity of the Weil restriction of an algebraic stack along a finite flat morphism. For the latter two results, no separation assumptions are necessary.
Using the theory infinity-categories we construct derived (dg-)categories of regular, holonomic D-modules and algebraically constructible sheaves on a complex smooth algebraic stack. We construct a natural infinity-categorical equivalence between these two categories generalising the classical Riemann-Hilbert correspondence.
In this paper, we study the geometric invariant theory on algebraic spaces, and construct te moduli spaces of $\mathcal{H}$-semistable sheaves on projective Deligne-Mumford stacks over algebraic spaces $S$. We prove that this moduli space is projective over $S$ as an algebraic space.
We prove that under a certain mild hypothesis, the DG category of D-modules on a quasi-compact algebraic stack is compactly generated. We also show that under the same hypothesis, the functor of global sections on the DG category of quasi-coherent sheaves is continuous.
In this paper we will introduce a certain type of morphisms of log schemes (in the sense of Fontaine, Illusie, and Kato) and investigate their moduli. Then by applying this we define a notion of toric algebraic stacks over arbitrary schemes, which may be regarded as torus embeddings within the framework of algebraic stacks, and study some basic properties. Furthermore, we study the stack-theoretic analogue of toroidal embeddings.
The purpose of this paper is to lay the foundations of a theory of invariants in étale cohomology for smooth Artin stacks. We compute the invariants in the case of the stack of elliptic curves, and we use the theory we developed to get some results regarding Brauer groups of algebraic spaces.
We prove that the dg category of perfect complexes on a smooth, proper Deligne-Mumford stack over a field of characteristic zero is geometric in the sense of Orlov, and in particular smooth and proper. On the level of triangulated categories, this means that the derived category of perfect complexes embeds as an admissible subcategory into the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a smooth, projective variety. The same holds for a smooth, projective, tame Artin stack over an arbitrary field.
We prove Grothendieck's existence theorem for relatively perfect complexes on an algebraic stack that is proper and flat over an $I$-adically complete Noetherian ring $A$. This generalizes an earlier result of Lieblich in the setting of algebraic spaces.
We prove that cohomology and base change holds for algebraic stacks, generalizing work of Brochard in the tame case. We also show that Hom-spaces on algebraic stacks are represented by abelian cones, generalizing results of Grothendieck, Brochard, Olsson, Lieblich, and Roth--Starr. To accomplish all of this, we prove that a wide class of Ext-functors in algebraic geometry are coherent (in the sense of M. Auslander).
This paper is largely concerned with constructing coarse moduli spaces for Artin stacks. The main purpose of this paper is to introduce the notion of stability on an arbitrary Artin stack and construct a coarse moduli space for the open substack of stable points. Also, we present an application to coherent cohomology of Artin stacks.
In this short note we extend the Exodromy Theorem of arXiv:1807.03281 to a large class of stacks and higher stacks. We accomplish this by extending the Galois category construction to simplicial schemes. We also deduce that the nerve of the Galois category of a simplicial scheme is equivalent to its étale topological type in the sense of Friedlander.
We define the notion of fundamental group of an algebraic stack, prove a comparison theorem between the fundamental group of a stack over the complex numbers and that of the associated analytic orbifold, show that this notion coincides with that defined with simplicial schemes by Oda and finally prove some short exact sequences involving these groups.
Motivated by applications in moduli theory, we introduce a flexible and powerful language for expressing lower bounds on relative dimension of morphisms of schemes, and more generally of algebraic stacks. We show that the theory is robust and applies to a wide range of situations. Consequently, we obtain simple tools for making dimension-based deformation arguments on moduli spaces. Additionally, in a complementary direction we develop the basic properties of codimension for algebraic stacks. One of our goals is to provide a comprehensive toolkit for working transparently with dimension statem…
We establish Tannaka duality for noetherian algebraic stacks with affine stabilizer groups. Our main application is the existence of Hom-stacks in great generality.
We study Hom 2-functors parameterizing 1-morphisms of algebraic stacks, and prove that it is representable by an algebraic stack under certain conditions, using Artin's criterion. As an application we study Picard 2-functors which parameterizes line bundles on algebraic stacks.
Given a category fibered in groupoids over schemes with a log structure, one produces a category fibered in groupoids over log schemes. We classify the groupoid fibrations over log schemes that arise in this manner in terms of a categorical notion of "minimal" objects. The classification is actually a purely category-theoretic result about groupoid fibrations over fibered categories, though most of the known applications occur in the setting of log geometry, where our categorical framework encompasses many notions of "minimality" previously extant in the literature.
We prove some basic results on the dimension theory of algebraic stacks, and on the multiplicities of their irreducible components, for which we do not know a reference.
One fundamental consequence of a scheme $X$ being proper is that the functor classifying maps from $X$ to any other suitably nice scheme or algebraic stack is representable by an algebraic stack. This result has been generalized by replacing $X$ with a proper algebraic stack. We show, however, that it also holds when $X$ is replaced by many examples of algebraic stacks which are not proper, including many global quotient stacks. This leads us to revisit the definition of properness for stacks. We introduce the notion of a formally proper morphism of stacks and study its properties. We develop …
Building up on work of Epstein, May and Drury, we define and investigate the mod $p$ Steenrod operations on the de Rham cohomology of smooth algebraic stacks over a field of characteristic $p>0$. We then compute the action of the operations on the de Rham cohomology of classifying stacks for finite groups, connected reductive groups for which $p$ is not a torsion prime, and (special) orthogonal groups when $p=2$.
In this paper we consider the Brauer groups of algebraic stacks and GIT quotients: the only algebraic stacks we consider in this paper are quotient stacks [X/G], where X is a smooth scheme of finite type over a field k, and G is a linear algebraic group over k and acting on X, as well as various moduli stacks of principal G-bundles on a smooth projective curve X, associated to a reductive group G. We also consider the Brauer groups of the corresponding coarse moduli spaces, which most often identify with the corresponding GIT-quotients. One conclusion that we seem to draw then is that the Brau…
We prove some finiteness theorems for the Picard functor of an algebraic stack, in the spirit of SGA 6, exp. XII and XIII. In particular, we give a stacky version of Raynaud's relative representability theorem, we give sufficient conditions for the existence of the torsion component of the Picard functor, and for the finite generation of the Neron-Severi groups or of the Picard group itself. We give some examples and applications. In an appendix, we prove the semicontinuity theorem for a (non necessarily tame) algebraic stack.
We show that every scheme/algebraic space/stack that is quasi-compact with quasi-finite diagonal can be approximated by a noetherian scheme/algebraic space/stack. More generally, we show that any stack which is etale-locally a global quotient stack can be approximated. Examples of applications are generalizations of Chevalley's, Serre's and Zariski's theorems and Chow's lemma to the non-noetherian setting. We also show that every quasi-compact algebraic stack with quasi-finite diagonal has a finite generically flat cover by a scheme.
This article is based in part on lecture notes prepared for the summer school "The Geometry, Topology and Physics of Moduli Spaces of Higgs Bundles" at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences at the National University of Singapore in July of 2014. The aim is to provide a brief introduction to algebraic stacks, and then to give several constructions of the moduli stack of Higgs bundles on algebraic curves. The first construction is via a "bootstrap" method from the algebraic stack of vector bundles on an algebraic curve. This construction is motivated in part by Nitsure's GIT construction of a…
We develop a theory of unbounded derived categories of quasi-coherent sheaves on algebraic stacks. In particular, we show that these categories are compactly generated by perfect complexes for stacks that either have finite stabilizers or are local quotient stacks. We also extend Toën and Antieau--Gepner's results on derived Azumaya algebras and compact generation of sheaves on linear categories from derived schemes to derived Deligne--Mumford stacks. These are all consequences of our main theorem: compact generation of a presheaf of triangulated categories on an algebraic stack is local for t…
We prove that every algebraic stack, locally of finite type over an algebraically closed field with affine stabilizers, is étale-locally a quotient stack in a neighborhood of a point with a linearly reductive stabilizer group. The proof uses an equivariant version of Artin's algebraization theorem proved in the appendix. We provide numerous applications of the main theorems.
We introduce and study a class of algebraic stacks with finite inertia in positive and mixed characteristic, which we call tame algebraic stacks. They include tame Deligne-Mumford stacks, and are arguably better behaved than general Deligne-Mumford stacks. We also give a complete characterization of finite flat linearly reductive schemes over an arbitrary base. Our main result is that tame algebraic stacks are étale locally quotient by actions of linearly reductive finite group schemes. In a subsequent paper we will show that tame algebraic stacks admit a good theory of stable maps.
We introduce the notion of Lusternik-Schnirelmann category for differentiable stacks and establish its relation with the groupoid Lusternik-Schnirelmann category for Lie groupoids.
We give an alternate formulation of pseudo-coherence over an arbitrary derived stack X. The full subcategory of pseudo-coherent objects forms a stable sub-infinity-category of the derived category associated to X. Using relative Tor-amplitude we define a derived stack classifying pseudo-coherent objects. For reasonable base schemes, this classifies the bounded derived category. In the case that X is a projective derived scheme flat over the base, we show the moduli is locally geometric and locally of almost finite type. Using this result, we prove the existence of a derived motivic Hall algebr…
A geometric stack is a quasi-compact and semi-separated algebraic stack. We prove that the quasi-coherent sheaves on the small flat topology, Cartesian presheaves on the underlying category, and comodules over a Hopf algebroid associated to a presentation of a geometric stack are equivalent categories. As a consequence, we show that the category of quasi-coherent sheaves on a geometric stack is a Grothendieck category. We associate, in a 2-functorial way, to a 1-morphism of geometric stacks $f$, an adjunction $(f^*, f_*)$ for the corresponding categories of quasi-coherent sheaves that agrees w…
We show the equivalence between two notions of log moduli stacks which appear in literatures. In particular, we generalize M.Olsson's theorem of representation of log algebraic stacks and answer a question posted by him (\cite{Ol4} 3.5.3). As an application, we obtain several fundamental results of algebraic log stacks which resemble to those in algebraic stacks.
Let $X$ be a normal, connected and projective variety over an algebraically closed field $k$. It is known that a vector bundle $V$ on $X$ is essentially finite if and only if it is trivialized by a proper surjective morphism $f:Y\to X$. In this paper we introduce a different approach to this problem which allows to extend the results to normal, connected and strongly pseudo-proper algebraic stack of finite type over an arbitrary field $k$.
Let G be a connected algebraic group and let [G,G] be its commutator subgroup. We prove a conjecture of Drinfeld about the existence of a connected etale group cover H of [G,G], characterized by the following properties: every central extension of G, by a finite etale group scheme, splits over H, and the commutator map of G lifts to H. We prove, moreover, that the quotient stack of G by the natural action of H is the universal Deligne-Mumford Picard stack to which G maps.
We define and study the essential dimension of an algebraic stack. We compute the essential dimension of the stacks Mgn and MgnBar of smooth, or stable, n-pointed curves of genus g. We also prove a general lower bound for the essential dimension of algebraic groups with a non-trivial center. Using this, we find new exponential lower bounds for the essential dimension of spin groups and new formulas for the essential dimension of some finite p-groups. Finally, we apply the lower bound for spin groups to the theory of the Witt ring of quadratic forms over a field k.
The notion of tangencial base point is well-known for schemes in characteristic zero. We show that the definition in terms of Puiseux series generalizes to the case of Deligne--Mumford stacks, over a field of arbitrary characteristic. We then apply this construction to moduli spaces of smooth curves, generalizing a result of Ihara-Nakamura.
Raynaud--Gruson characterized flat and pure morphisms between affine schemes in terms of projective modules. We give a similar characterization for non-affine morphisms. As an application, we show that every quasi-coherent sheaf is the union of its finitely generated quasi-coherent subsheaves on any quasi-compact and quasi-separated algebraic stack.
