We prove existence of strongly continuous evolution systems in L^2 for Schroedinger-type equations with non-Lipschitz coefficients in the principal part. The underlying operator structure is motivated from models of paraxial approximations of wave propagation in geophysics. Thus, the evolution direction is a spatial coordinate (depth) with additional pseudodifferential terms in time and low regularity in the lateral variables. We formulate and analyze the Cauchy problem in distribution spaces with mixed regularity. The key point in the evolution system construction is an elliptic regularity result, which enables us to precisely determine the common domain of the generators. The construction of a solution with low regularity in the coefficients is the basis for an inverse analysis which allows to infer the lack of lateral regularity in the medium from measured data.
In this paper we develop the classical multiplier technique to prove a virial identity and smoothing estimates (in a perturbative setting) for the electromagnetic variable coefficients Schroedinger equation.
We present some a - priori bounds from above and from below for solutions to a class of conformally invariant Schroedinger equations. As a by - product we deduce some new uniqueness results.
We prove a family of identities that involve the solutions to the free Schreodinger equation. As a consequence of these identities we shall deduce a lower bound for the local smoothing estimate and a uniqueness criterion.
We show that the time evolution of the operator $H = -Δ+ i(A \cdot \nabla + \nabla \cdot A) + V$ in R^3 satisfies Strichartz and smoothing estimates under suitable smoothness and decay assumptions on A and V but without any smallness assumptions. We require that zero energy is neither an eigenvalue nor a resonance.
We study the paraxial wave equation with a randomly perturbed index of refraction, which can model the propagation of a wave beam in a turbulent medium. The random perturbation is a stationary and isotropic process with a general form of the covariance that may be integrable or not. We focus attention mostly on the non-integrable case, which corresponds to a random perturbation with long-range correlations, that is relevant for propagation through a cloudy turbulent atmosphere. The analysis is carried out in a high-frequency regime where the forward scattering approximation holds. It reveals t…
In this paper we consider the Ito-Schrodinger model for wave propagation in random media in the paraxial regime. We solve the equation for the fourth-order moment of the field in the regime where the correlation length of the medium is smaller than the initial beam width. As applications we prove that the centered fourth-order moments of the field satisfy the Gaussian summation rule, we derive the covariance function of the intensity of the transmitted beam, and the variance of the smoothed Wigner transform of the transmitted field. The second application is used to explicitly quantify the sci…
We consider the nonlinear Schroedinger equation in higher dimension with Dirichlet boundary conditions and with a non-local smoothing nonlinearity. We prove the existence of small amplitude periodic solutions. In the fully resonant case we find solutions which at leading order are wave packets, in the sense that they continue linear solutions with an arbitrarily large number of resonant modes. The main difficulty in the proof consists in solving a "small divisor problem" which we do by using a renormalisation group approach.
Sharp spectral asymptotics for 2- and 3-dimensional Schroedinger operators with strong magnetic field are derived under rather weak smoothness conditions. In comparison with version 1 of 2005 new results are added and minor errors corrected.
For $α>1$ we consider the initial value problem for the dispersive equation $i\partial_t u +(-Δ)^{α/2} u= 0$. We prove an endpoint $L^p$ inequality for the maximal function $\sup_{t\in[0,1]}|u(\cdot,t)|$ with initial values in $L^p$-Sobolev spaces, for $p\in(2+4/(d+1),\infty)$. This strengthens the fixed time estimates due to Fefferman and Stein, and Miyachi. As an essential tool we establish sharp $L^p$ space-time estimates (local in time) for the same range of $p$.
We show that the number of solutions of a double singularly perturbed Schroedinger Maxwell system on a smooth bounded domain A depends on the topological properties of the domain. In particular if A is non contractible we obtain cat(A) + 1 positive solutions. The result is obtained via Lusternik Schnirelmann category theory
We analyze long range wave propagation in three-dimensional random waveguides. The waves are trapped by top and bottom boundaries, but the medium is unbounded in the two remaining directions. We consider scalar waves, and motivated by applications in underwater acoustics, we take a pressure release boundary condition at the top surface and a rigid bottom boundary. The wave speed in the waveguide is known and smooth, but the top boundary has small random fluctuations that cause significant cumulative scattering of the waves over long distances of propagation. To quantify the scattering effects,…
Sharp spectral asymptotics for multidimensional Schroedinger operators with the strong magnetic field are derived under rather weak smoothness conditions. I assume that magnetic intensity matrix has constant defect r>0 at each point. In comparison with version 1 of 5.5 year ago this version contains more results (we also study some degenerations), improvements and some minor corrections.
The possibility of finite-time, dispersive blow up for nonlinear equations of Schroedinger type is revisited. This mathematical phenomena is one of the possible explanations for oceanic and optical rogue waves. In dimension one, the possibility of dispersive blow up for nonlinear Schroedinger equations already appears in [9]. In the present work, the existing results are extended in several ways. In one direction, the theory is broadened to include the Davey-Stewartson and Gross-Pitaevskii equations. In another, dispersive blow up is shown to obtain for nonlinear Schroedinger equations in spat…
This paper is concerned with the global existence of small solutions to pure-power nonlinear Schroedinger equations subject to radially symmetric data with critical regularity. Under radial symmetry we focus our attention on the case where the power of nonlinearity is somewhat smaller than the pseudoconformal power and the initial data belong to the scale-invariant homogeneous Sobolev space. In spite of the negative-order differentiability of initial data the nonlinear Schroedinger equation has global in time solutions provided that the initial data have the small norm. The key ingredient in t…
We obtain an $L^4$ space-time Strichartz inequality for any smooth three-dimensional Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ which is asymptotically conic at infinity and non-trapping, where $u$ is a solution to the Schrödinger equation $iu_t + {1/2} Δ_M u = 0$. The exponent $H^{1/4}(M)$ is sharp, by scaling considerations. In particular our result covers asymptotically flat non-trapping manifolds. Our argument is based on the interaction Morawetz inequality introduced by Colliander et al., interpreted here as a positive commutator inequality for the tensor product $U(t,z',z'') := u(t,z') u(t,z'')$ of the…
We consider time-dependent nonlinear Schroedinger equations subject to smooth, lattice-periodic potentials plus additional confining potentials, slowly varying on the lattice scale. After an appropriate scaling we study the homogenization limit for vanishing lattice spacing. Assuming well prepared initial data, the resulting effective dynamics is governed by a homogenized nonlinear Schroedinger equation with an effective mass tensor depending on the initially chosen Bloch eigenvalue. The given results rigorously justify the use of the effective mass formalism for the description of Bose-Einste…
We prove that, for any real $λ$, the system $-Δu +λu = u^3-βuv^2$, $ -Δv+λv =v^3-βvu^2$, $ u,v\in H^1_0(Ω),$ where $Ω$ is a bounded smooth domain of $R^3$, admits a bounded family of positive solutions $(u_β, v_β)$ as $β\to +\infty$. An upper bound on the number of nodal sets of the weak limits of difference $u_β-v_β$ is also provided. Moreover, for any sufficiently large fixed value of $β>0$ the system admits infinitely many positive solutions.
We shall study the following initial value problem: \begin{equation}{\bf i}\partial_t u - Δu + V(x) u=0, \hbox{} (t, x) \in {\mathbf R} \times {\mathbf R}^n, \end{equation} $$u(0)=f,$$ where $V(x)$ is a real short--range potential, whose radial derivative satisfies some supplementary assumptions. More precisely we shall present a family of identities satisfied by the solutions to the previous Cauchy problem. As a by--product of these identities we deduce some uniqueness results and a lower bound for the so called local smoothing which becomes an identity in a precise asymptotic sense.
This paper studies the local exact controllability and the local stabilization of the semilinear Schrödinger equation posed on a product of $n$ intervals ($n\ge 1$). Both internal and boundary controls are considered, and the results are given with periodic (resp. Dirichlet or Neumann) boundary conditions. In the case of internal control, we obtain local controllability results which are sharp as far as the localization of the control region and the smoothness of the state space are concerned. It is also proved that for the linear Schrödinger equation with Dirichlet control, the exact controll…
Let g be a scattering metric on a compact manifold X with boundary, i.e., a smooth metric giving the interior of X the structure of a complete Riemannian manifold with asymptotically conic ends. An example is any compactly supported perturbation of the standard metric on Euclidean space. Consider the operator $H = \half Δ+ V$, where $Δ$ is the positive Laplacian with respect to g and V is a smooth real-valued function on X vanishing to second order at the boundary. Assuming that g is non-trapping, we construct a global parametrix for the kernel of the Schroedinger propagator $U(t) = e^{-itH}$ …
We consider the energy-critical Schroedinger map initial value problem with smooth initial data from R^2 into the sphere S^2. Given sufficiently energy-dispersed data with subthreshold energy, we prove that the system admits a unique global smooth solution. This improves earlier analogous conditional results. The key behind this improvement lies in exploiting estimates on the commutator of the Schroedinger map and harmonic map heat flows.
This paper is a continuation of a previous paper by the same authors, where an analytic smoothing effect was proved for long-range type perturbations of the Laplacian $H_0$ on $\re^n$. In this paper, we consider short-range type perturbations $H$ of the Laplacian on $\re^n$, and we characterize the analytic wave front set of the solution to the Schrödinger equation: $e^{-itH}f$, in terms of that of the free solution: $e^{-itH_0}f$, for $t<0$ in the forward nontrapping region. The same result holds for $t>0$ in the backward nontrapping region. This result is an analytic analogue of results by H…
In this article we prove time-global smoothing effects of dispersive pseudodifferential equations with constant coefficient radially symmetric symbols on real rank one symmetric spaces of noncompact type. We also discuss gain of regularities according to decay rates of initial values for the Schroedinger evolution equation. We introduce some isometric operators and reduce the arguments to the well-known Euclidean case. In our proof, Helgason's Fourier transform and the Radon transform as an elliptic Fourier integral operator play crucial roles.
We prove global smoothing and Strichartz estimates for the Schroedinger, wave, Klein-Gordon equations and for the massless and massive Dirac systems, perturbed with singular electromagnetic potentials. We impose a smallness condition on the magnetic part, while the electric part can be large. The decay and regularity assumptions on the coefficients are close to critical.
We show that the number of low energy solutions of a double singularly perturbed Schroedinger Maxwell system type on a smooth 3 dimensional manifold (M,g) depends on the topological properties of the manifold. The result is obtained via Lusternik Schnirelmann category theory.
We prove global wellposedness in the energy space of the defocusing cubic nonlinear Schroedinger and Gross-Pitaevskii equations on the exterior of a non-trapping domain in dimension 3. The main ingredient is a Strichartz estimate obtained combining a semi-classical Strichartz estimate with a smoothing effect on exterior domains.
Let $(M^\circ, g)$ be an asymptotically conic manifold, in the sense that $M^\circ$ compactifies to a manifold with boundary $M$ in such a way that $g$ becomes a scattering metric on $M$. A special case of particular interest is that of asymptotically Euclidean manifolds, where $\partial M = S^{n-1}$ and the induced metric at infinity is equal to the standard metric. We study the resolvent kernel $(P + k^2)^{-1}$ and Riesz transform of the operator $P = Δ_g + V$, where $Δ_g$ is the positive Laplacian associated to $g$ and $V$ is a real potential function $V$ that is smooth on $M$ and vanishes …
We consider a class of wave-Schroedinger systems with a Zakharov-Schulman type coupling. This class of systems is indexed by a parameter gamma which measures the strength of the null form in the nonlinearity of the wave equation. The case gamma = 1 corresponds to the well-known Zakharov system, while the case gamma = -1 corresponds to the Yukawa system. Here we show that sufficiently smooth and localized Cauchy data lead to pointwise decaying global solutions which scatter, for any gamma in (0,1].
We prove Strichartz estimates for the Schroedinger equation with an electromagnetic potential, in dimension $n\geq3$. The decay and regularity assumptions on the potentials are almost critical, i.e., close to the Coulomb case. In addition, we require repulsivity and a non trapping condition, which are expressed as smallness of suitable components of the potentials. However, the potentials themselves can be large, and we avoid completely any a priori spectral assumption on the operator. The proof is based on smoothing estimates and new Sobolev embeddings for spaces associated to magnetic potent…
We prove the existence of weak solutions in the space of energy for a class of non-linear Schroedinger equations in the presence of a external rough magnetic potential. Under our assumptions it is not possible to study the problem by means of usual arguments like resolvent techniques or Fourier integral operators, for example. We use a parabolic regularization and we solve the approximating Cauchy problem. This is achieved by obtaining suitable smoothing estimates for the dissipative evolution. The total mass and energy bounds allow to extend the solution globally in time. We then infer suffic…
