Following on from ``Hyperbolic Plateau problems'' (by the same author), we provide a complete geometric description of solutions to the Plateau problem $(S,ϕ)$ when $S$ is a compact Riemann surface with a finite number of points removed.
We define the ``volume'' contained by pointed $k$-surfaces, first studied by the author in [9], and we show that this volume is always finite. Likewise, we show that the surface area of a pointed $k$-surface is always finite.
In this paper, we consider a Generalized Bernstein Theorem for a type of generalized minimal surfaces, namely minimal Plateau surfaces. We show that if an orientable minimal Plateau surface is stable and has quadratic area growth in $\mathbb{R}^3 $, then it is flat.
We define and prove the existence of unique solutions of an asymptotic Plateau problem for spacelike maximal surfaces in the pseudo-hyperbolic space of signature (2, n): the boundary data is given by loops on the boundary at infinity of the pseudo-hyperbolic space which are limits of positive curves. We also discuss a compact Plateau problem. The required compactness arguments rely on an analysis of the pseudo-holomorphic curves defined by the Gauss lifts of the maximal surfaces.
Plateau's problem is to show the existence of an area minimizing surface with a given boundary, a problem posed by Lagrange in 1760. Experiments conducted by Plateau showed that an area minimizing surface can be obtained in the form of a film of oil stretched on a wire frame, and the problem came to be called Plateau's problem. Special cases have been solved by Douglas, Rado, Besicovitch, Federer and Fleming, and others. Federer and Fleming used the chain complex of integral currents with its continuous boundary operator to solve Plateau's problem for orientable, embedded surfaces. But integra…
We prove some existence and non-existence results for complete area minimizing surfaces in the homogeneous space $\mathbb{E}(-1,τ)$. As one of our main results, we present sufficient conditions for a curve $Γ$ in $\partial_{\infty} \mathbb{E}(-1,τ)$ to admit a solution to the asymptotic Plateau problem, in the sense that there exists a complete area minimizing surface in $\mathbb{E}(-1,τ)$ having $Γ$ as its asymptotic boundary.
In this paper, we shall study the Dirichlet problem for the minimal surfaces equation. We prove some results about the boundary behaviour of a solution of this problem. We describe the behaviour of a non-converging sequence of solutions in term of lines of divergence in the domain. Using this second result, we build some solutions of the Dirichlet problem on unbounded domain. We then give a new proof of the result of C. Cos\'ın and A. Ros concerning the Plateau problem at infinity for horizontal ends.
We consider surfaces of constant Gaussian curvature immersed in 3-dimensional manifolds, and we strengthen the compactness result of Labourie in the case where the ambient manifold is 3-dimensional hyperbolic space. This allows us to prove results of existence of solutions to the asymptotic Plateau problem, as defined by Labourie, and the continuous dependence of these solutions on the data.
We solve the Plateau problem for marginally outer trapped surfaces in general Cauchy data sets. We employ the Perron method and tools from geometric measure theory to force and control a blow-up of Jang's equation. Substantial new geometric insights regarding the lower order properties of marginally outer trapped surfaces are gained in the process. The techniques developed in this paper are flexible and can be adapted to other non-variational existence problems.
By employing the method of moving planes in a novel way we extend some classical symmetry and rigidity results for smooth minimal surfaces to surfaces that have singularities of the sort typically observed in soap films.
Given a unit vector $\textbf{v}\in\mathbb{R}^3$ and $λ\in\mathbb{R}$, a translating $λ$-soliton is a surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ whose mean curvature $H$ satisfies $H=\langle N,\textbf{v}\rangle+λ,\ |\textbf{v}|=1$, where $N$ is the Gauss map of the surface. In this paper, we extend the phenomenon of instability of Plateau-Rayleigh for translating $λ$-solitons of cylindrical type, proving that long pieces of these surfaces are unstable. We will provide explicit bounds on the length of these surfaces. It will be also proved that if a translating $λ$-soliton is a graph, then it is a minimizer of t…
We give a fairly complete solution to the asymptotic Plateau Problem for area minimizing surfaces in H2xR. In particular, we identify the collection of Jordan curves in the asymptotic boundary of H2xR, which bounds an area minimizing surface in H2xR. Furthermore, we study the similar problem for minimal surfaces, and show that the situation is highly different.
We prove some non-existence results for the asymptotic Plateau problem of minimal and area minimizing surfaces in the homogeneous space ${\widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}_2(\mathbb{R})}$ with isometry group of dimension 4, in terms of their asymptotic boundary. Also, we show that a properly immersed minimal surface in ${\widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}_2(\mathbb{R})}$ contained between two bounded entire minimal graphs separated by vertical distance less than $\sqrt{1+4τ^2}π$ have multigraphical ends. Finally, we construct simply connected minimal surfaces with finite total curvature which are not graphs and a …
In this paper we give a geometric argument for bounding the diameter of a connected compact surface (with boundary) of arbitrary codimension in Euclidean space in terms of Topping's diameter bound for closed surfaces (without boundary). The obtained estimate is expected to be optimal for minimal surfaces in the sense that optimality follows if the Topping conjecture holds true. Our result directly implies an explicit nonexistence criterion in the classical Plateau-Douglas problem. We exhibit examples of boundary contours to ensure that our criterion is of different type from classical criteria…
In this paper, we study Alexandrov-embedded r-noids with genus 1 and horizontal ends. Such minimal surfaces are of two types and we build several examples of the first one. We prove that if a polygon bounds an immersed polygonal disk, it is the flux polygon of an r-noid with genus 1 of the first type. We also study the case of polygons which are invariant under a rotation. The construction of these surfaces is based on the resolution of the Dirichlet problem for the minimal surface equation on an unbounded domain.
We apply Garnier's method to solve the Plateau problem for maximal surfaces in Minkowski 3-space. Our study relies on the improved version we gave of R. Garnier's resolution of the Plateau problem for polygonal boundary curves in Euclidean 3-space. Since in Minkowski space the method does not allow us to avoid the existence of singularities, the appropriate framework is to consider maxfaces -- generalized maximal surfaces without branch points, introduced by M. Umehara and K. Yamada. We prove that any given spacelike polygonal curve in generic position in Minkowski 3-space bounds at least one …
We prove existence and a.e. regularity of an area minimizing soap film with a bound on energy spanning a given Jordan curve in R^3. The energy of a film is defined to be the sum of its surface area and the length of its singular branched set. The class of surfaces over which area is minimized includes images of disks, integral currents, nonorientable surfaces and soap films as observed by Plateau with a bound on energy. Our area minimizing solution is shown to be a smooth surface away from its branched set which is a union of Lipschitz Jordan curves of finite total length.
Given a noncompact disconnected complete periodic curve $Γ$ with no self intersection in $\mathbb R^3$, it is proved that there exists a noncompact simply connected periodic minimal surface spanning $Γ$. As an application it is shown that for any tetrahedron $T$ with dihedral angles $\leq90^\circ$ there exist four embedded minimal annuli in $T$ which are perpendicular to $\partial T$ along their boundary. It is also proved that every Platonic solid of $\mathbb R^3$ contains five types of free boundary embedded minimal surfaces of genus zero.
In this paper, we study a second order variational problem for locally convex hypersurfaces, which is the affine invariant analogue of the classical Plateau problem for minimal surfaces. We prove existence, regularity and uniqueness results for hypersurfaces maximizing affine area under appropriate boundary conditions.
We prove dynamical stability of a natural class of hypersurface laminations defined over Cartan--Hadamard manifolds of pinched curvature. We achieve this by providing a complete solution to the asymptotic Plateau problem for immersed surfaces of constant extrinsic curvature in Cartan--Hadamard manifolds, proposed by Labourie in [25], together with its natural higher-dimensional generalisation.
We generalize the Fenchel theorem for strong spacelike closed curves of index $1$ in the 3-dimensional Minkowski space, showing that the total curvature must be less than or equal to $2π$. Here strong spacelike means that the tangent vector and the curvature vector span a spacelike 2-plane at each point of the curve $γ$ under consideration. The assumption of index 1 is equivalent to saying that $γ$ winds around some timelike axis with winding number 1. We prove this reversed Fenchel-type inequality by constructing a ruled spacelike surface with the given curve as boundary and applying the Gaus…
We provide a new proof of the classical result that any closed rectifiable Jordan curve Gamma in space being piecewise of class C^2 bounds at least one immersed minimal surface of disc-type, under the additional assumption that the total curvature of Gamma is smaller than 6*Pi. In contrast to the methods due to Osserman, Gulliver and Alt, our proof relies on a polygonal approximation technique, using the existence of immersed solutions of Plateau's problem for polygonal boundary curves, provided by the first author's accomplishment of Garnier's ideas.
For two disjoint rectifiable star-shaped Jordan curves (including round circles) in the asymptotic boundary of hyperbolic 3-space, if the distance (see Definition 1.8) between these two Jordan curves are bounded from above by some constant, then there exists an annulus-type area minimizing (or equivalently least area) minimal surface asymptotic to these two Jordan curves. The main results of this paper are Theorem 1.7 and Theorem 1.11.
We explore a connection between the Finslerian area functional based on the Busemann-Hausdorff-volume form, and well-investigated Cartan functionals to solve Plateau's problem in Finsler 3-space, and prove higher regularity of solutions. Free and semi-free geometric boundary value problems, as well as the Douglas problem in Finsler space can be dealt with in the same way. We also provide a simple isoperimetric inequality for minimal surfaces in Finsler spaces.
We study equilibrium configurations for the Euler-Plateau energy with elastic modulus, which couples an energy functional of Euler-Plateau type with a total curvature term often present in models for the free energy of biomembranes. It is shown that the potential minimizers of this energy are highly dependent on the choice of physical rigidity parameters, and that the area of critical surfaces can be computed entirely from their boundary data. When the elastic modulus does not vanish, it is shown that axially symmetric critical immersions and critical immersions of disk type are necessarily pl…
Let $(M,Q)$ be a compact, three dimensional manifold of strictly negative sectional curvature. Let $(Σ,P)$ be a compact, orientable surface of hyperbolic type (i.e. of genus at least two). Let $θ:π_1(Σ,P)\toπ_1(M,Q)$ be a homomorphism. Generalising a recent result of Gallo, Kapovich and Marden concerning necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of complex projective structures with specified holonomy to manifolds of non-constant negative curvature, we obtain necessary conditions on $θ$ for the existence of a so called $θ$-equivariant Plateau problem over $Σ$, which is equivalent t…
Let $X$ be a compact connected strongly pseudoconvex $CR$ manifold of real dimension $2n-1$ in $\mathbb{C}^{N}$. For $n\ge 3$, Yau solved the complex Plateau problem of hypersurface type by checking a bunch of Kohn-Rossi cohomology groups in 1981. In this paper, we generalize Yau's conjecture on some numerical invariant of every isolated surface singularity defined by Yau and the author to any dimension and prove that the conjecture is true for local complete intersection singularities of dimension $n\ge 3$. As a direct application, we solved complex Plateau problem of hypersurface type for an…
A generalization of the Euler-Plateau problem to account for the energy contribution due to twisting of the bounding loop is proposed. Euler-Lagrange equations are derived in a parameterized setting and a bifurcation analysis is performed. A pair of dimensionless parameters govern bifurcations from a flat, circular ground state. While one of these is familiar from the Euler-Plateau problem, the other encompasses information about the ratio of the twisting to bending rigidities, twist, and size of the loop. For sufficiently small values of the latter parameter, two separate groups of bifurcatio…
In mathematics, the classical Plateau problem consists of finding the surface of least area that spans a given rigid boundary curve. A physical realization of the problem is obtained by dipping a stiff wire frame of some given shape in soapy water and then removing it; the shape of the spanning soap film is a solution to the Plateau problem. But what happens if a soap film spans a loop of inextensible but flexible wire? We consider this simple query that couples Plateau's problem to Euler's Elastica: a special class of twist-free curves of given length that minimize their total squared curvatu…
We study generalized minimizers in the soap film capillarity model introduced in [arXiv:1807.05200,arXiv:1907.00551]. Collapsed regions of generalized minimizers are shown to be smooth outside of dimensionally small singular sets, which are thus empty in physical dimensions. Since generalized minimizers converge to Plateau's type surfaces in the vanishing volume limit, the fact that collapsed regions cannot exhibit $Y$-points and $T$-points (which are possibly present in the limit Plateau's surfaces) gives the first strong indication that singularities of the limit Plateau's surfaces should al…
Assume you are given a finite configuration $Γ$ of disjoint rectifiable Jordan curves in $\mathbb{R}^n$. The Plateau-Douglas problem asks whether there exists a minimizer of area among all compact surfaces of genus at most $p$ which span $Γ$. While the solution to this problem is well-known, the classical approaches break down if one allows for singular configurations $Γ$ where the curves are potentially non-disjoint or self-intersecting. Our main result solves the Plateau-Douglas problem for such potentially singular configurations. Moreover, our proof works not only in $\mathbb{R}^n$ but in …
The Plateau-Douglas problem asks to find an area minimizing surface of fixed or bounded genus spanning a given finite collection of Jordan curves in Euclidean space. In the present paper we solve this problem in the setting of proper metric spaces admitting a local quadratic isoperimetric inequality for curves. We moreover obtain continuity up to the boundary and interior Hölder regularity of solutions. Our results generalize corresponding results of Jost and Tomi-Tromba from the setting of Riemannian manifolds to that of proper metric spaces with a local quadratic isoperimetric inequality. Th…
The Lawson surfaces $ξ_{1,g}$ of genus $g$ are constructed by rotating and reflecting the Plateau solution $f_t$ with respect to a particular geodesic $4$-gon $Γ_t$ along its boundary, where $t= \tfrac{1}{2g+2}$ is an angle of $Γ_t$. In this paper we combine the existence and regularity of the Plateau solution $f_t$ in $t \in (0, \tfrac{1}{4})$ with topological information about the moduli space of Fuchsian systems on the 4-puncture sphere to obtain existence of a Fuchsian DPW potential $η_t$ for every $f_t$ with $t\in(0, \tfrac{1}{4}]$. Moreover, the coefficients of $η_t$ are shown to depend …
We give a fairly complete solution to the asymptotic Plateau Problem for minimal surfaces in H^2xR. In particular, we identify the collection of finite Jordan curves in the asymptotic cylinder which bounds a minimal surface in H^2xR.
It is pointed out that despite of the non-linearity of the underlying equations, there do exist rather general methods that allow to generate new minimal surfaces from known ones.
We study the asymptotic Plateau problem in $\mathbb{H}_2\times \mathbb{R}$. We give the first examples of non-fillable finite curves with no thin tail in the asymptotic cylinder. Furthermore, we study the fillability question for infinite curves in the asymptotic boundary.
We prove existence and regularity of minimizers for Hölder densities over general surfaces of arbitrary dimension and codimension in \(\R^n \), satisfying a cohomological boundary condition, providing a natural dual to Reifenberg's Plateau problem. We generalize and extend methods of Reifenberg, Besicovitch, and Adams, in particular we generalize a particular type of minimizing sequence used by Reifenberg (whose limits have nice properties, including lower bounds on lower density and finite Hausdorff measure,) prove such minimizing sequences exist, and develop cohomological spanning conditions…
This paper describes the work of Jesse Douglas on the Plateau problem, work for which he was awarded a Fields Medal in 1936, and considers the contributions Tibor Rado made in the 1930s.
Plateau's soap film problem is to find a surface of least area spanning a given boundary. We begin with a compact orientable $(n-2)$-dimensional submanifold $M$ of $\R^n$. If $M$ is connected, we say a compact set $X$ "spans" $M$ if $X$ intersects every Jordan curve whose linking number with $M$ is 1. Picture a soap film that spans a loop of wire. Using $(n-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff spherical measure as the measure of the size of a compact set $X$ in $\R^n$, we prove there exists a smallest compact set $X_0$ that spans $M$. We also show that $X_0$ is almost everywhere a real analytic $(n-1)$-d…
