Existence of a complex structure on the $6$ dimensional sphere is proved in this paper. The proof is based on re-interpreting a hypothetical complex structure as a classical ground state of a Yang--Mills--Higgs-like theory on $S^6$. This classical vacuum solution is then constructed by Fourier expansion (dimensional reduction) from the obvious one of a similar theory on the $14$ dimensional exceptional compact Lie group ${\rm G}_2$.
We explicitly describe all SO(7)-invariant almost quaternion-Hermitian structures on the twistor space of the six sphere and determine the types of their intrinsic torsion.
In this paper we study almost complex and almost para-complex Cayley structures on six-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian spheres in the space of purely imaginary octaves of the split Cayley algebra $\mathbf{Ca}'$. It is shown that the Cayley structures are non-integrable, their basic geometric characteristics are calculated. In contrast to the usual Riemann sphere $\mathbb{S}^6$, there exist (integrable) complex structures and para-complex structures on the pseudospheres under consideration.
For the standard metric on the six-dimensional sphere, with Levi-Civita connection $\nabla$, we show there is no almost complex structure $J$ such that $\nabla_X J$ and $\nabla_{JX} J$ commute for every $X$, nor is there any integrable $J$ such that $\nabla_{JX} J = J \nabla_X J$ for every $X$. The latter statement generalizes a previously known result on the non-existence of integrable orthogonal almost complex structures on the six-sphere. Both statements have refined versions, expressed as intrinsic first order differential inequalities depending only on $J$ and the metric. The new techniqu…
In this paper we find examples of slant surfaces in the nearly Kahler six sphere. First, we characterize two-dimensional small and great spheres which are slant. Their description is given in terms of the associative 3-form in $\Im \OO .$ Later on, we classify the slant surfaces of $S^6$ which are orbits of maximal torus in $G_2.$ We show that these orbits are flat tori which are linearly full in $S^5\subset S^6$ and that their slant angle is between $\arccos \frac{1}{3}$ and $\fracπ{2}.$ Among them we find one parameter family of minimal orbits.
We show that the action of conformal vector fields on functions on the sphere determines the spectrum of the Laplacian (or the conformal Laplacian), without further input of information. The spectra of intertwining operators (both differential and non-local) with principal part a power of the Laplacian follows as a corollary. An application of the method is the sharp form of Gross' entropy inequality on the sphere. The same method gives the spectrum of the Dirac operator on the sphere, as well as of a continuous family of nonlocal intertwinors, and an infinite family of odd-order differential …
The space of orientation-compatible almost complex structures on the six-dimensional sphere naturally contains a copy of seven-dimensional real projective space. We show that the inclusion induces an isomorphism on fundamental groups and rational homotopy groups. We also compute the homotopy fiber of the inclusion and the homotopy groups of the space of almost complex structures in terms of the homotopy groups of the seven-dimensional sphere. Our approach lends itself to generalization to components of almost complex structures with vanishing first Chern class on six-manifolds.
In 2003, S.-s. Chern began a study of almost-complex structures on the 6-sphere, with the idea of exploiting the special properties of its well-known almost-complex structure invariant under the exceptional group $G_2$. While he did not solve the (currently still open) problem of determining whether there exists an integrable almost-complex structure on the 6-sphere, he did prove a significant identity that resolves the question for an interesting class of almost-complex structures on the 6-sphere.
This note is about the interplay between the almost-hermitian and Riemannian geometries of a manifold. These geometries can be seen to interact through curvature. The main result is an obstruction equation to the integrability of almost-complex structures orthogonal with respect to Riemannian metrics with constrained sectional curvature. Several geometric consequences ensue, such as a formula for the norm of the Levi-Civita covariant derivative of a hypothetical orthogonal complex structure. Our results lead to a partial recovery of the well-known fact that the round $6$-sphere $S^6$ is not he…
By a theorem of Kirchhoff if the six sphere admits an almost complex structure then the seven sphere is parallelizable, more crucial, he exhibited an explicit global frame constructed out of the given almost complex structure. This result implicitly equips the seven sphere with a definite H-space multiplication. We propose to address the existence problem of complex structures on the six sphere studying the associated parallelism-multiplications on the seven sphere. We ask to what extent the integrability condition of the almost complex structure amounts to the constancy of the structure funct…
This article is a survey about or introduction to certain aspects of the complex geometry of a hypothetical complex structure on the six-sphere. We discuss a result of Peternell--Campana--Demailly on the algebraic dimension of a hypothetical complex six-sphere and give some examples. We also give an overview over an application of Huckleberry--Kebekus--Peternell on the group of biholomorphisms of such a complex six-sphere.
In [5], Colding-Ilmanen-Minicozzi-White showed that within the class of closed smooth self-shrinkers in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, the entropy is uniquely minimized at the round sphere. They conjectured that, for $2\leq n\leq 6$, the round sphere minimizes the entropy among all closed smooth hypersurfaces. Using an appropriate weak mean curvature flow, we prove their conjecture. For these dimensions, our approach also gives a new proof of the main result of [5] and extends its conclusions to compact singular self-shrinkers.
The classification of isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres with four or six different principal curvatures is still not complete. In this paper we develop a structural approach that may be helpful for a classification. Instead of working with the isoparametric hypersurface family in the sphere, we consider the associated Lagrangian submanifold of the real Grassmannian of oriented $2$-planes in $\mathbb{R}^{n+2}$. We obtain new geometric insights into classical invariants and identities in terms of the geometry of the Lagrangian submanifold.
I review several proofs for non-existence of orthogonal complex structures on the six-sphere, most notably by G. Bor and L. Hernandez-Lamoneda, but also by K. Sekigawa and L. Vanhecke that we generalize for metrics close to the round one. Invited talk at MAM-1 workshop, 27-30 March 2017, Marburg.
We show that the only rational homology spheres which can admit almost complex structures occur in dimensions two and six. Moreover, we provide infinitely many examples of six-dimensional rational homology spheres which admit almost complex structures, and infinitely many which do not. We then show that if a closed almost complex manifold has sum of Betti numbers three, then its dimension must be a power of two.
In this paper we perform a fine blow-up analysis for a fourth order elliptic equation involving critical Sobolev exponent, related to the prescription of some conformal invariant on the standard sphere. We derive from this analysis some a priori estimates in dimension 5 and 6. On the five dimensionl sphere these a priori estimates combined with the perturbation result of Part I allow us to obtain some existence results. On the six dimensional sphere we prove the existence of at least one solution when an associated index is different from zero.
We study the space of (orthogonal) almost complex structures on closed six-dimensional manifolds as the space of sections of the twistor space for a given metric. For a connected six-manifold with vanishing first Betti number, we express the space of almost complex structures as a quotient of the space of sections of a seven-sphere bundle over the manifold by a circle action, and then use this description to compute the rational homotopy theoretic minimal model of the components that satisfy a certain Chern number condition. We further obtain a formula for the homological intersection number o…
