The paper gives analogues of some starting results in the theory of Gaussian Hilbert Spaces for semicircular distributed random variables. The transition from the commutative to the free frame is done considering matrices of increasing dimension and utilizing the Amitzur-Levitzki Theorem.
We prove a non-commutative version of the Hilbert's 17th problem, giving a characterization of the class of non-commutative polynomials in n-undeterminates that have positive trace when evaluated in n-selfadjoint elements in arbitrary II1 von Neumann algebra. As a corollary we prove that Connes's embedding conjecture is equivalent to a statement that can be formulated entirely in the context of finite matrices.
A classical result of Namioka and Phelps states that the square is a test object to verify semi-simplexity in the tensor theory of convex compact sets. By using the quantization of generalized Namioka-Phelps test spaces we formulate a nuclearity criteria for C*-algebras, which establishes a non-commutative version of their result. The proof we suggest covers the nuclearity characterization via non-commutative polyhedron outlined by Effros. Several matrix systems studied by Farenick and Paulsen are shown to be test systems for nuclearity. We also prove that the standard Namioka-Phelps test spac…
A study of Hilbert $C^*$-bimodules over commutative $C^*$-algebras is carried out and used to establish a sufficient condition for two quantum Heisenberg manifolds to be isomorphic.
This paper studies the problems of embedding and isomorphism for countably generated Hilbert C*-modules over commutative C*-algebras. When the fibre dimensions differ sufficiently, relative to the dimension of the spectrum, we show that there is an embedding between the modules. This result continues to hold over recursive subhomogeneous C*-algebras. For certain modules, including all modules over $C_0(X)$ when $dim X \leq 3$, isomorphism and embedding are determined by the restrictions to the sets where the fibre dimensions are constant. These considerations yield results for the Cuntz semigr…
A C*-algebra $A$ is C*-reflexive if any countably generated Hilbert C*-module $M$ over $A$ is C*-reflexive, i.e. the second dual module $M''$ coincides with $M$. We show that a commutative C*-algebra $A$ is C*-reflexive if and only if for any sequence $I_k$ of disjoint non-zero C*-subalgebras, the canonical inclusion $\oplus_k I_k\subset A$ doesn't extend to an inclusion of $\prod_k I_k$.
We define Schatten classes of adjointable operators on Hilbert modules over abelian $C^*$-algebras. Many key features carry over from the Hilbert space case. In particular, the Schatten classes form two-sided ideals of compact operators and are equipped with a Banach norm and a $C^*$-valued trace with the expected properties. For trivial Hilbert bundles, we show that our Schatten-class operators can be identified bijectively with Schatten-norm-continuous maps from the base space into the Schatten classes on the Hilbert space fiber, with the fiberwise trace. As applications, we introduce the $C…
The $C^{\ast}$-algebra $\mathcal{U}_{nc}(n)$ is the universal $C^{\ast}$-algebra generated by $n^2$ generators $u_{ij}$ that make up a unitary matrix. We prove that Kirchberg's formulation of Connes' embedding problem has a positive answer if and only if $\mathcal{U}_{nc}(2) \otimes_{\min} \mathcal{U}_{nc}(2)=\mathcal{U}_{nc}(2) \otimes_{\max} \mathcal{U}_{nc}(2)$. Our results follow from properties of the finite-dimensional operator system $\mathcal{V}_n$ spanned by $1$ and the generators of $\mathcal{U}_{nc}(n)$. We show that $\mathcal{V}_n$ is an operator system quotient of $M_{2n}$ and has…
We use a weighted analogue of a trace to define a weighted non-commutative decreasing rearrangement and show it's relationship with the singular value function. We further show an alternative approach to constructing weighted non-commutative Banach function spaces using weighted non-commutative decreasing rearrangements and prove that this approach is equivalent to the original approach by Labuschagne and Majewski.
Motivated from the theory of Hilbert-Schmidt morphisms between Hilbert C*-modules over commutative C*-algebras by Stern and van Suijlekom \textit{[J. Funct. Anal., 2021]}, we introduce the notion of p-absolutely summing morphisms between Hilbert C*-modules over commutative C*-algebras. We show that an adjointable morphism between Hilbert C*-modules over monotone closed commutative C*-algebra is 2-absolutely summing if and only if it is Hilbert-Schmidt. We formulate version of Pietsch factorization problem for p-absolutely summing morphisms and solve partially
Suppose $A$ is a pro-C*-algebra. Let $L_{A}(E)$ be the pro-C*-algebra of adjointable operators on a Hilbert $A$-module $E$ and let $K_{A}(E)$ be the closed two sided $*$-ideal of all compact operators on $E$. We prove that if $E$ be a full Hilbert $A$-module, the innerness of derivations on $K_{A}(E)$ implies the innerness of derivations on $L_{A}(E)$. We show that if $A$ is a commutative pro-C*-algebra and $E$ is a Hilbert $A$-bimodule then every derivation on $K_{A}(E)$ is zero. Moreover, if $A$ is a commutative $σ$-C*-algebra and $E$ is a Hilbert $A$-bimodule then every derivation on $L_{A}…
In this paper we consider non-commutative analogue for the arithmeticgeometric mean inequality $$a^{r}b^{1-r}+(r-1)b\geq ra$$ for two positive numbers $a,b$ and $r> 1$. We show that under some assumptions the non-commutative analogue for $a^{r}b^{1-r}$ which satisfies this inequality is unique and equal to $r$-mean. The case $0<r<1$ is also considered. In particular, we give a new characterization of the geometric mean.
We consider C*-algebras generated by a single Hilbert bimodule (Pimsner-Toeplitz algebras) and by a product systems of Hilbert bimodules. We give a new proof of a theorem of Pimsner, which states that any representation of the generating bimodule gives rise to a representation of the Pimsner-Toeplitz algebra. Our proof does not make use of the conditional expectation onto the subalgebra invariant under the dual action of the circle group. We then prove the analogous statement for the case of product systems, generalizing a theorem of Arveson from the case of product systems of Hilbert spaces.
We generalize the Serre-Swan theorem to non-commutative C$^{*}$-algebras. For a Hilbert C$^{*}$-module $X$ over a C$^{*}$-algebra ${\cal A}$, we introduce a hermitian vector bundle $\exx$ associated to $X$. We show that there is a linear subspace $Γ_{X}$ of the space of all holomorphic sections of ${\cal E}_{X}$ and a flat connection $D$ on ${\cal E}_{X}$ with the following properties: (i) $Γ_{X}$ is a Hilbert ${\cal A}$-module with the action of ${\cal A}$ defined by $D$, (ii) the C$^{*}$-inner product of $Γ_{X}$ is induced by the hermitian metric of ${\cal E}_{X}$, (iii) ${\cal E}_{X}$ is is…
Commutative Hilbertian Frobenius algebras are those commutative semi-group objects in the monoidal category of Hilbert spaces, for which the Hilbert adjoint of the multiplication satisfies the Frobenius compatibility relation, that is, this adjoint is a bimodule map. In this note we prove that they split as an orthogonal direct sum of two closed ideals, their Jacobson radical which in fact is nothing but their annihilator, and the closure of the linear span of their group-like elements. As a consequence such an algebra is semisimple if, and only if, its multiplication has a dense range. In par…
** Draft Version ** To any boolean topos one can associate its category of internal Hilbert spaces, and if the topos is locally separated one can consider a full subcategory of square integrable Hilbert spaces. In both case it is a symmetric monoidal monotone complete $C^{*}$-category. We will prove that any boolean locally separated topos can be reconstructed as the classifying topos of "non-degenerate" monoidal normal $*$-representations of both its category of internal Hilbert spaces and its category of square integrable Hilbert spaces. This suggest a possible extension of the usual Gelfand…
We study the monoidal dagger category of Hilbert C*-modules over a commutative C*-algebra from the perspective of categorical quantum mechanics. The dual objects are the finitely presented projective Hilbert C*-modules. Special dagger Frobenius structures correspond to bundles of uniformly finite-dimensional C*-algebras. A monoid is dagger Frobenius over the base if and only if it is dagger Frobenius over its centre and the centre is dagger Frobenius over the base. We characterise the commutative dagger Frobenius structures as finite coverings, and give nontrivial examples of both commutative …
The paper is discussing infinite divisibility in the setting of operator-valued boolean, free and, more general, c-free independences. Particularly, using Hilbert bimodules and non-commutative functions techniques, we obtain analogues of the Levy-Hincin integral representation for infinitely divisible real measures.
We provided an analogue Banach-Alaoglu theorem for Hilbert $H^*$-module. We construct a $Λ$-weak$^*$ topology on a Hilbert $H^*$-module over a proper $H^*$-algebra $Λ$, such that the unit ball is compact with respect to $Λ$-weak$^*$ topology.
We prove stability theorems in the Cuntz semigroup of a commutative C*-algebra which are analogues of classical stability theorems for topological vector bundles over compact Hausdorff spaces. Several applications to simple unital AH algebras of slow dimension growth are then given: such algebras have strict comparison of positive elements; their Cuntz semigroups are recovered functorially from the Elliott invariant; the lower-semicontinuous dimension functions are dense in the space of all dimension functions, and the latter is a Choquet simplex.
Analogues for Hilbert C*-modules of classical results of Fourier series theory in Hilbert spaces are considered. Relations between different properties of orthogonal and orthonormal systems for Hilbert C*-modules are studied with special attention paid on the differences with the well-known Hilbert space situation.
A pair of Hilbert space linear operators $(V_1,V_2)$ is said to be $q$-commutative, for a unimodular complex number $q$, if $V_1V_2=qV_2V_1$. A concrete functional model for $q$-commutative pairs of isometries is obtained. The functional model is parametrized by a collection of Hilbert spaces and operators acting on them. As a consequence, the collection serves as a complete unitary invariance for $q$-commutative pairs of isometries. A $q$-commutative operator pair $(V_1,V_2)$ is said to be doubly $q$-commutative, if in addition, it satisfies $V_2V_1^*=qV_1^*V_2$. Doubly $q$-commutative pairs …
We prove the free analogue of the transportation cost inequality for tracial distributions of non-commutative self-adjoint (also unitary) multi-variables based on random matrix approximation procedure.
The theory of Toeplitz quantization presented in our previous paper is extended and further developed to include diverse and interesting non-commutative realizations of the classical Euclidean plane. This is done using Hilbert spaces of entire functions, where polynomials in one complex variable form a dense subspace. The complex coordinate naturally acts as an unbounded multiplication operator generating, together with its adjoint, a highly non-commutative *-algebra of operators. The Toeplitz operators are then geometrically constructed as special elements from this algebra; they are associat…
We characterize the non-commutative Aleksandrov--Clark measures and the minimal realization formulas of contractive and, in particular, isometric non-commutative rational multipliers of the Fock space. Here, the full Fock space over $\mathbb{C} ^d$ is defined as the Hilbert space of square--summable power series in several non-commuting formal variables, and we interpret this space as the non-commutative and multi-variable analogue of the Hardy space of square--summable Taylor series in the complex unit disk. We further obtain analogues of several classical results in Aleksandrov--Clark measur…
We consider the free non-commutative analogue Phi^*, introduced by D. Voiculescu, of the concept of Fisher information for random variables. We determine the minimal possible value of Phi^*(a,a^*), if a is a non-commutative random variable subject to the constraint that the distribution of aa^* is prescribed. More generally, we obtain the minimal possible value of Phi^*({a_{ij},a_{ij}^*), if {a_{ij}} is a family of non-commutative random variables such that the distribution of AA^* is prescribed, where A is the matrix (a_{ij}). The d*d-generalization is obtained from the case d=1 via a result …
We provide an analogue of Gundy's decomposition for L1-bounded non-commutative martingales. An important difference from the classical case is that for any L1-bounded non-commutative martingale, the decomposition consists of four martingales. This is strongly related with the row/column nature of non-commutative Hardy spaces of martingales. As applications, we obtain simpler proofs of the weak type (1,1) boundedness for non-commutative martingale transforms and the non-commutative analogue of Burkholder's weak type inequality for square functions. A sequence (x_n) in a normed space X is called…
In this article, we introduce the notions of weak boundary repre- sentation, quasi hyperrigidity and weak peak points in the non-commutative setting for operator systems in C* algebras. An analogue of Saskin theorem relating quasi hyperrigidity and weak Choquet boundary for particular classes of C* algebras is proved. We also show that, if an irreducible representation is a weak boundary representation and weak peak then it is a boundary repre- sentation. Several examples are provided to illustrate these notions. It is also observed that isometries on Hilbert spaces play an important role in t…
We use the theory of fully matricial, or non-commutative, functions to investigate infinite divisibility and limit theorems in operator-valued non-commutative probability. Our main result is an operator-valued analogue of the Bercovici-Pata bijection. An important tool is Voiculescu's subordination property for operator-valued free convolution.
After recalling in detail some basic definitions on Hilbert C*-bimodules, Morita equivalence and imprimitivity, we discuss a spectral reconstruction theorem for imprimitivity Hilbert C*-bimodules over commutative unital C*-algebras and consider some of its applications in the theory of commutative full C*-categories.
Motivated by importance of operator spaces contained in the set of all scalar multiples of isometries ($MI$-spaces) in a separable Hilbert space for $C^*$-algebras and E-semigroups we exhibit more properties of such spaces. For example, if an $MI$-space contains an isometry with shift part of finite multiplicity, then it is one-dimensional. We propose a simple model of a unilateral shift of arbitrary multiplicity and show that each separable subspace of a Hilbert space is the range of a shift. Also, we show that $MI$-spaces are non-symmetric, very unfriendly to multiplication, and prove a Comm…
We show that every infinite-dimensional commutative unital C*-algebra has a Hilbert C*-module admitting no frames. In particular, this shows that Kasparov's stabilization theorem for countably generated Hilbert C*-modules can not be extended to arbitrary Hilbert C*-modules.
We revisit the characterisation of modules over non-unital $C^*$-algebras analogous to modules of sections of vector bundles. A fullness condition on the associated multiplier module characterises a class of modules which closely mirror the commutative case. We also investigate the multiplier-module construction in the context of bi-Hilbertian bimodules, particularly those of finite numerical index and finite Watatani index.
The present material addresses several problems left open in the Trans. AMS paper " Non-crossing cumulants of type B" of P. Biane, F. Goodman and A. Nica. The main result is that a type B non-commutative probability space can be studied in the framework of freeness with amalgamation. This view allows easy ways of constructing a version of the S-transform as well as proving analogue results to Central Limit Theorem and Poisson Limit Theorem.
To each finite-dimensional operator space $E$ is associated a commutative operator algebra $UC(E)$, so that $E$ embeds completely isometrically in $UC(E)$ and any completely contractive map from $E$ to bounded operators on Hilbert space extends uniquely to a completely contractive homomorphism out of $UC(E)$. The unit ball of $UC(E)$ is characterized by a Nevanlinna factorization and transfer function realization. Examples related to multivariable von Neumann inequalities are discussed.
Bounded Hilbert space *-representations are studied for a q-analogue of the *-algebra Pol(Mat_{2,2}) of polynomials on the space Mat_{2,2} of complex 2\times 2 matrices.
We prove a weak-type (1,1) inequality for square functions of non-commutative martingales that are simultaneously bounded in $L^2$ and $L^1$. More precisely, the following non-commutative analogue of a classical result of Burkholder holds: there exists an absolute constant $K>0$ such that if $\cal{M}$ is a semi-finite von Neumann algebra and $(\cal{M}_n)^{\infty}_{n=1}$ is an increasing filtration of von Neumann subalgebras of $\cal{M}$ then for any given martingale $x=(x_n)^{\infty}_{n=1}$ that is bounded in $L^2(\cal{M})\cap L^1(\cal{M})$, adapted to $(\cal{M}_n)^{\infty}_{n=1}$, there exist…
Using a diagrammatic reformulation of Bayes' theorem, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of Bayesian inference in the setting of finite-dimensional $C^*$-algebras. In other words, we prove an analogue of Bayes' theorem in the joint classical and quantum context. Our analogue is justified by recent advances in categorical probability theory, which have provided an abstract formulation of the classical Bayes' theorem. In the process, we further develop non-commutative almost everywhere equivalence and illustrate its important role in non-commutative Bayesian invers…
We define the Hardy spaces of free noncommutative functions on the noncommutative polydisc and the noncommutative ball and study their basic properties. Our technique combines the general methods of noncommutative function theory and asymptotic formulae for integration over the unitary group. The results are the first step in developing the general theory of free noncommutative bounded symmetric domains on the one hand and in studying the asymptotic free noncommutative analogues of classical spaces of analytic functions on the other.
The operator space $\text{OUMD}$ property was introduced by Pisier in the context of vector-valued noncommutative $L_p$-spaces. It is an open problem whether the column Hilbert space has this property. Based on some complex interpolation techniques, we are able to relate this problem to the study of the $\text{OUMD}_q$ property for non-commutative $L_p$-spaces.
We extend results on analytic complex measures on the complex unit circle to a non-commutative multivariate setting. Identifying continuous linear functionals on a certain self-adjoint subspace of the Cuntz--Toeplitz $C^*-$algebra, the free disk operator system, with non-commutative (NC) analogues of complex measures, we refine a previously developed Lebesgue decomposition for positive NC measures to establish an NC version of the Frigyes and Marcel Riesz Theorem for `analytic' measures, i.e. complex measures with vanishing positive moments. The proof relies on novel results on the order prope…
We give a systematic study on the Hardy spaces of functions with values in the non-commutative $L^p$-spaces associated with a semifinite von Neumann algebra ${\cal}M.$ This is motivated by the works on matrix valued Harmonic Analysis (operator weighted norm inequalities, operator Hilbert transform), and on the other hand, by the recent development on the non-commutative martingale inequalities. Our non-commutative Hardy spaces are defined by the non-commutative Lusin integral function.
The full Fock space over $\mathbb C ^d$ can be identified with the free Hardy space, $H^2 (\mathbb B ^d _\mathbb N)$ - the unique non-commutative reproducing kernel Hilbert space corresponding to a non-commutative Szegö kernel on the non-commutative, multi-variable open unit ball $\mathbb B ^d _\mathbb N := \bigsqcup _{n=1} ^\infty \left( \mathbb C^{n\times n} \otimes \mathbb C ^d \right) _1$. Elements of this space are free or non-commutative functions on $\mathbb B ^d _\mathbb N$. Under this identification, the full Fock space is the canonical non-commutative and several-variable analogue of…
Hilbert C*-modules are the analogues of Hilbert spaces where a C*-algebra plays the role of the scalar field. With the advent of Kasparov's celebrated KK-theory they became a standard tool in the theory of operator algebras. While the elementary properties of Hilbert C*-modules can be derived basically in parallel to Hilbert space theory the lack of an analogue of the Projection Theorem soon leads to serious obstructions and difficulties. In particular the theory of unbounded operators is notoriously more complicated due to the additional axiom of regularity which is not easy to check. In this…
We show that no faithful functor from the category of Hilbert spaces with linear isometries into the category of sets preserves directed colimits. Thus Hilbert spaces cannot form an abstract elementary class, even up to change of language. We deduce an analogous result for the category of commutative unital $C^\ast$-algebras with $\ast$-homomorphisms. This implies, in particular, that this category is not axiomatizable by a first-order theory, a strengthening of a conjecture of Bankston.
