The Gopakumar-Vafa invariants are numbers defined as certain linear combinations of the Gromov-Witten invariants. We prove that the GV invariants of a toric Calabi-Yau threefold are integers and that the invariants for high genera vanish. The proof of the integrality is based on elementary number theory and that of the vanishing uses the operator formalism and the exponential formula.
We show that the non-commutative widths for flopping curves on smooth 3-folds introduced by Donovan-Wemyss are described by Katz's genus zero Gopakumar-Vafa invariants.

We prove a closed formula for leading Gopakumar- Vafa BPS invariants of local Calabi-Yau geometries given by the canonical line bundles of toric Fano surfaces. It shares some similar features with Goettsche-Yau-Zaslow formula: Connection with Hilbert schemes, connection with quasimodular forms, and quadratic property after suitable transformation. In Part I of this paper we will present the case of projective plane, more general cases will be presented in Part II.
Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of fiber classes on Calabi-Yau 4-folds fibered over curves

We compute Gromov-Witten (GW) and Donaldson-Thomas (DT) invariants (and also descendant invariants) for local CY 4-folds over Fano 3-folds, V_5 and V_22 up to degree 3. We use torus localization for GW invariants computation, and use classical results for Hilbert schemes on V_5 and V_22 for DT invariants computation. From these computations, one can check correspondence between DT and Gopakumar-Vafa (GV) invariants conjectured by Cao-Maulik-Toda in genus 0. We prove Gopakumar-Vafa conjecture for local toric Calabi-Yau manifolds. It's also proved that the local Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of a given class at large genus vanish.
Gromov-Witten, Gopakumar-Vafa, and Donaldson-Thomas invariants of Calabi-Yau threefolds are compared. In certain situations, the Donaldson-Thomas invariants are very easy to handle, sometimes easier than the other invariants. This point is illustrated in several ways, especially by revisiting computations of Gopakumar-Vafa invariants by Katz, Klemm, and Vafa in a rigorous mathematical framework. This note is based on my talk at the 2004 Snowbird Conference on String Geometry.
As an analogy to Gopakumar-Vafa conjecture on Calabi-Yau 3-folds, Klemm-Pandharipande defined Gopakumar-Vafa type invariants of a Calabi-Yau 4-fold $X$ using Gromov-Witten theory. When $X$ is holomorphic symplectic, Gromov-Witten invariants vanish and one can consider the corresponding reduced theory. In a companion work, we propose a definition of Gopakumar-Vafa type invariants for such a reduced theory. In this paper, we give them a sheaf theoretic interpretation via moduli spaces of stable pairs.
We show that Gopakumar-Vafa invariants can be expressed in terms of the cohomology ring of moduli space of D-branes without reference to the sl_2 \times sl_2 action. We also give a simple construction of this action.
A version of the Donaldson-Thomas invariants of a Calabi-Yau threefold is proposed as a conjectural mathematical definition of the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants. These invariants have a local version, which is verified to satisfy the required properties for contractible curves. This provides a new viewpoint on the computation of the local Gromov-Witten invariants of contractible curves by Bryan, Leung, and the author.
We regard the work of Maulik and Toda, proposing a sheaf-theoretic approach to Gopakumar-Vafa invariants, as defining a BPS structure, that is, a collection of BPS invariants together with a central charge. Assuming their conjectures, we show that a canonical flat section of the flat connection corresponding to this BPS structure, at the level of formal power series, reproduces the Gromov-Witten partition function for all genera, up to some error terms in genus 0 and 1. This generalises a result of Bridgeland and Iwaki for the contribution from genus 0 Gopakumar-Vafa invariants.
The Gopakumar-Vafa conjecture predicts that the Gromov-Witten invariants of a Calabi-Yau 3-fold can be canonically expressed in terms of integer invariants called BPS numbers. Using the methods of symplectic Gromov-Witten theory, we prove that the Gopakumar-Vafa formula holds for any symplectic Calabi-Yau 6-manifold, and hence for Calabi-Yau 3-folds. The results extend to all symplectic 6-manifolds and to the genus zero GW invariants of semipositive manifolds.
The Banana manifold $X_{\text{Ban}}$ is a compact Calabi-Yau threefold constructed as the conifold resolution of the fiber product of a generic rational elliptic surface with itself, first studied by Bryan. We compute Katz's genus 0 Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of fiber curve classes on the Banana manifold $X_{\text{Ban}}\to \mathbf{P}^1$. The weak Jacobi form of weight -2 and index 1 is the associated generating function for these genus 0 Gopakumar-Vafa invariants. In this paper, we generalize a mathematical definition of Gopakumar-Vafa (GV) invariants on Calabi-Yau 3-folds introduced by Maulik and the author, using an analogue of BPS sheaves introduced by Davison-Meinhardt on the coarse moduli spaces of one dimensional twisted semistable sheaves with arbitrary holomorphic Euler characteristics. We show that our generalized GV invariants are independent of twisted stability conditions, and conjecture that they are also independent of holomorphic Euler characteristics, so that they define the same GV invariants. Using the interpretation of certain generalised Donaldson-Thomas invariants, including stable pairs curve counts, as the monodromy of a flat connection on a formal principal bundle, we show that the conjectural Gopakumar-Vafa contributions of all genera to the Gromov-Witten partition function appear in the asymptotics of the corresponding flat sections. The Fourier-Laplace integrals used to produce flat sections lead naturally to the GW/DT change of variable -q = e^{i u}.
Two 3-fold flops are exhibited, both of which have precisely one flopping curve. One of the two flops is new, and is distinct from all known algebraic D4-flops. It is shown that the two flops are neither algebraically nor analytically isomorphic, yet their curve-counting Gopakumar-Vafa invariants are the same. We further show that the contraction algebras associated to both are not isomorphic, so the flops are distinguished at this level. This shows that the contraction algebra is a finer invariant than various curve-counting theories, and it also provides more evidence for the proposed analyt…
We propose a new way to compute the genus zero Gopakumar-Vafa invariants for two families of non-toric non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds that admit simple flops: Reid's Pagodas, and Laufer's examples. We exploit the duality between M-theory on these threefolds, and IIA string theory with D6-branes and O6-planes. From this perspective, the GV invariants are detected as five-dimensional open string zero modes. The multi-Banana configuration $\widehat{F}_{mb}$ is a local Calabi-Yau threefold of Schoen type. Namely, $\widehat{F}_{mb}$ is a conifold resolution of $\widehat{I}_v \times_{\bf{D}} \widehat{I}_w$, where $\widehat{I}_v \to {\bf{D}}$ is an elliptic surface over a formal disc ${\bf{D}}$ with an $I_v$ singulararity on the central fiber. We generalize the technique developed in our earlier paper to compute genus 0 Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of certain fiber curve classes. We illustrate the computation explicitly for $v=1$ and $v=w=2$. In this paper, we propose an ansatz for defining Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of Calabi-Yau threefolds, using perverse sheaves of vanishing cycles. Our proposal is a modification of a recent approach of Kiem-Li, which is itself based on earlier ideas of Hosono-Saito-Takahashi. We conjecture that these invariants are equivalent to other curve-counting theories such as Gromov-Witten theory and Pandharipande-Thomas theory. Our main theorem is that, for local surfaces, our invariants agree with PT invariants for irreducible one-cycles. We also give a counter-example to the Kiem-Li conjectures, where …

The conifold is a basic example of a noncompact Calabi-Yau threefold that admits a simple flop, and in M-theory, gives rise to a 5d hypermultiplet at low energies, realized by an M2-brane wrapped on the vanishing sphere. We develop a novel gauge-theoretic method to construct new classes of examples that generalize the simple flop to so-called length l=1,...,6. The method allows us to naturally read off the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants. We develop a theory of Gopakumar-Vafa (GV) invariants for a Calabi-Yau threefold (CY3) $X$ which is equipped with an involution $\imath$ preserving the holomorphic volume form. We define integers $n_{g,h}(β) $ which give a virtual count of the number of genus $g$ curves $C$ on $X$, in the class $β\in H_{2}(X)$, which are invariant under $\imath$, and whose quotient $C/\imath$ has genus $h$. We consider aspects of Chern-Simons theory on L(p,q) lens spaces and its relation with matrix models and topological string theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds, searching for possible new large N dualities via geometric transition for non-SU(2) cyclic quotients of the conifold. We show that the stringy Kähler moduli space of a generic genus one curve of degree $N$, for $N\le 5$, is the $Γ_1(N)$ modular curve $X_1(N)$. This implies a correspondence between the cusps of the modular curves and certain large volume limits in the stringy Kähler moduli spaces of genus one fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds with $N$-sections. Using Higgs transitions in M-theory and F-theory as well as modular properties of the topological string partition function, we identify these large volume limits with elements of the Tate-Shafarevich group of the genus one fibration. Degenerate contributions to higher genus Gromov-Witten invariants of Calabi-Yau 3-folds are computed via Hodge integrals. The vanishing of contributions of covers of elliptic curves conjectured by Gopakumar and Vafa is proven. A formula for degree 1 covers for all genus pairs is computed in agreement with M-theoretic calculations of Gopakumar and Vafa. Finally, these results lead to a proof of a formula in the tautological ring of the moduli space of curves previously conjectured by Faber.

We study integrality of instanton numbers (genus zero Gopakumar - Vafa invariants) for quintic and other Calabi-Yau manifolds. We start with the analysis of the case when the moduli space of complex structures is one-dimensional; later we show that our methods can be used to prove integrality in general case. We give an expression of instanton numbers in terms of Frobenius map on $p$-adic cohomology ; the proof of integrality is based on this expression.
The Gopakumar-Vafa conjecture is defined and studied for the local geometry of a curve in a Calabi-Yau 3-fold. The integrality predicted in Gromov-Witten theory by the Gopakumar-Vafa BPS count is verified in a natural series of cases in this local geometry. The method involves Gromov-Witten computations, Mobius inversion, and a combinatorial analysis of the numbers of etale covers of a curve.
We consider certain elliptic threefolds over the projective plane (more generally over certain rational surfaces) with a section in Weierstrass normal form. In particular, over a del Pezzo surface of degree 8, these elliptic threefolds are Calabi-Yau threefolds. We will discuss especially the generating functions of Gromov-Witten and Gopakumar-Vafa invariants.
Let $X$ be a Calabi-Yau 4-fold and $D$ a smooth divisor on it. We consider tautological complex associated with $L=\mathcal{O}_X(D)$ on the moduli space of Le Potier stable pairs and define its counting invariant by integrating the Euler class against the virtual class. We conjecture a formula for their generating series expressed using genus zero Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of $D$ and genus one Gopakumar-Vafa type invariants of $X$, which we verify in several examples. We prove a conjectural vanishing result for Gopakumar--Vafa invariants of quintic 3-folds, referred to as Castelnuovo bound in the literature. Furthermore, we calculate Gopakumar--Vafa invariants at Castelnuovo bound $g=\frac{d^2+5d+10}{10}$. As physicists showed, these two properties allow us to compute all Gromov--Witten invariants of quintic 3-folds up to genus $53$, provided that the conifold gap condition holds. We also give a bound for the genus of any one-dimensional closed subscheme in a smooth hypersurface of degree $\leq 5$, which may be of independent interest.
The purpose of this paper is twofold: first we give a survey on the recent developments of curve counting invariants on Calabi-Yau 3-folds, e.g. Gromov-Witten theory, Donaldson-Thomas theory and Pandharipande-Thomas theory. Next we focus on the proof of the rationality conjecture of the generating series of PT invariants, and discuss its conjectural Gopakumar-Vafa form.
We make a proposal for calculating refined Gopakumar-Vafa numbers (GVN) on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds based on refined holomorphic anomaly equations. The key examples are smooth elliptic fibrations over (almost) Fano surfaces. For the resolved conifold with one outer D-brane in arbitrary framing, we present some results for the open string partition functions obtained by some operator manipulations. We prove some conjectures by Aganagic-Vafa and Aganagic-Klemm-Vafa that relates such invariants to the mirror curve of the resolved conifold. This establishes local mirror symmetry for the resolved confolds for holomorphic disc invariants. We also verify an integrality conjecture of such invariants by Ooguri-Vafa in this case and present closed formulas for some Ooguri-Vafa type invariants in genus 0 and arbitrary genera…
This paper contains some applications of Bridgeland-Douglas stability conditions on triangulated categories, and Joyce's work on counting invariants of semistable objects, to the study of birational geometry. We introduce the notion of motivic Gopakumar-Vafa invariants as counting invariants of D2-branes, and show that they are invariant under birational transformations between Calabi-Yau 3-folds. The result is similar to the fact that birational Calabi-Yau 3-folds have the same betti numbers or Hodge numbers.
In this paper, we study the enumeration of virtual numbers of immersed nodal curves along certain Calabi-Yau K3 fibrations. By using the concept of cosmic strings, we verify the modularity conjeture of the generating function of immersed nodal curves from String theory (Harvey-Moore). Based on the theory defining virtual numbers of nodal curves on algebraic surface (applying to a pencil of lattice polarized K3), a mathematical definition of virtual numbers of immersed rational curves (so-called Gopakumar-Vafa numbers) for Calabi-Yau K3 fibrations is given and it is shown to match up with strin…
We prove the Gopakumar-Marino-Vafa formula for special cubic Hodge integrals. The GMV formula arises from Chern-Simons/string duality applied to the unknot in the three sphere. The GMV formula is a q-analog of the ELSV formula for linear Hodge integrals. We find a system of bilinear localization equations relating linear and special cubic Hodge integrals. The GMV formula then follows easily from the ELSV formula. An operator form of the GMV formula is presented in the last section of the paper.
Quantum K-theory of a smooth projective variety at genus zero is a collection of integers that can be assembled into a generating series $J(Q,q,t)$ that satisfies a system of linear differential equations with respect to $t$ and $q$-difference equations with respect to $Q$.
