We show that almost split sequences in the category of comodules over a coalgebra with finite-dimensional right-hand term are direct limits of almost split sequences over finite dimensional subcoalgebras. In previous work we showed that such almost split sequences exist if the right hand term has a quasifinitely copresented linear dual. Conversely, taking limits of almost split sequences over finte-dimensional comodule categories, we then show that, for countable-dimensional coalgebras, certain exact sequences exist which satisfy a condition weaker than being almost split, which we call ``finitely almost split''. Under additional assumptions, these sequences are shown to be almost split in the appropriate category.
Let C be a coalgebra and consider the Grothendieck groups of the categories of the socle-finite injective right and left C-comodules. One of the main aims of the paper is to study Coxeter transformation, and its dual, of a pointed sharp Euler coalgebra C, and to relate the action of these transformations on a class of indecomposable finitely cogenerated C-comodules N with almost split sequences starting or ending with N. We also show that if C is a pointed K-coalgebra such that the every vertex of the left Gabriel quiver of C has only finitely many neighbours, then for any indecomposable non-p…
We study the behaviour of almost split sequences and \art quivers of an order under rejection of bijective modules. In particular, we establish relations of stable categories and almost split sequences for an order $A$ and the order $A'$ obtained from $A$ by such rejection. These results are specified for Gorenstein and Frobenius cases.
Let $(\mathfrak{C},\mathbb{E},\mathfrak{s})$ be an Ext-finite, Krull-Schmidt and $k$-linear extriangulated category with $k$ a commutative artinian ring. We define an additive subcategory $\mathfrak{C}_r$ (respectively, $\mathfrak{C}_l$) of $\mathfrak{C}$ in terms of the representable functors from the stable category of $\mathfrak{C}$ modulo $\mathfrak{s}$-injectives (respectively, $\mathfrak{s}$-projectives) to $k$-modules, which consists of all $\mathfrak{s}$-projective (respectively, $\mathfrak{s}$-injective) objects and objects isomorphic to direct summands of finite direct sums of all th…
In this paper, we introduce almost $\cal D$-split sequences and establish an elementary but somewhat surprising connection between derived equivalences and Auslander-Reiten sequences via BB-tilting modules. In particular, we obtain derived equivalences from Auslander-Reiten sequences (or $n$-almost split sequences), and Auslander-Reiten triangles.
We shall study the existence of almost split sequences in tri-exact categories, that is, extension-closed subcategories of triangulated categories. Our results unify and extend the existence theorems for almost split sequences in abelian categories and exact categories (that is, extension-closed subcategories of abelian categories), and those for almost split triangles in triangulated categories. As applications, we shall obtain some new results on the existence of almost split sequences in the derived categories of all modules over an algebra with a unity or a locally finite dimensional algeb…
We investigate how the higher almost split sequences over a tensor product of algebras are related to those over each factor. Herschend and Iyama gave a precise criterion for when the tensor product of an $n$-representation finite algebra and an $m$-representation finite algebra is $(n+m)$-representation finite. In this case we give a complete description of the higher almost split sequences over the tensor product by expressing every higher almost split sequence as the mapping cone of a suitable chain map and using a natural notion of tensor product for chain maps.
Let A be an exact category, that is, an extension-closed full subcategory of an abelian category. Firstly, we give some necessary and sufficient conditions for A to have almost split sequences. Then, we study when an almost split sequence in A induces an almost split sequence in an exact subcategory C of A. In case A has almost split sequences and C is Hom-finite Krull-Schmidt, this provides a necessary and sufficient condition for C to have almost split sequences. Finally, we show two applications of these results.
Almost split sequences lie in the heart of Auslander-Reiten theory. This paper deals with the structure of almost split sequences with certain ending terms in the morphism category of an Artin algebra $Λ$. Firstly we try to interpret the Auslander-Reiten translates of particular objects in the morphism category in terms of the Auslander-Reiten translations within the category of $Λ$-modules, and then use them to calculate almost split sequences. In classical representation theory of algebras, it is quite important to recognize the midterms of almost split sequences. As such, another part of th…
Let $O$ be a complete d.v.r. and $G$ a finite group. We give two applications of an adjunction in the stable category of $OG$. The first application gives necessary and sufficient conditions for the middle term of an almost split sequence terminating in a Knorr lattice to be indecomposable. The second characterises the stable endomorphism rings of Heller lattices of kG-modules.
Let k be a field, Q a quiver with countably many vertices and I an ideal of kQ such that kQ/I has finite dimensional Hom-spaces. In this note, we prove that there is no almost split sequence ending at an indecomposable not finitely presented representation of the bound quiver (Q,I). We then get that an indecomposable representation M of (Q,I) is the ending term of an almost split sequence if and only if it is finitely presented and not projective. The dual results are also true.
We show that, over any ring, a module $C$ is a codomain of a right almost split map if and only if $C$ is a finitely presented module with local endomorphism ring; thus we give an answer to a 40 years old question by M. Auslander. Using the tools developed, we also provide a useful sufficient condition for a class of modules to be non-precovering. Finally, we show a non-trivial application in the general context of morphisms determined by object.
A TTF-triple $(\mathcal{C},\mathcal{T},\mathcal{F})$ in an abelian category is called 'one-sided split' in case either $(\mathcal{C},\mathcal{T})$ or $(\mathcal{T},\mathcal{F})$ is a split torsion theory. In this paper we classify one-sided split TTF-triples in module categories, thus completing Jans' classification of two-sided split TTF-triples and answering a question that has remained open for almost forty years.
We introduce a very general extension of the monomorphism category as studied by Ringel and Schmidmeier which in particular covers generalised species over locally bounded quivers. We prove that analogues of the kernel and cokernel functor send almost split sequences over the path algebra and the preprojective algebra to split or almost split sequences in the monomorphism category. We derive this from a general result on preservation of almost split morphisms under adjoint functors whose counit is a monomorphism. Despite of its generality, our monomorphism categories still allow for explicit c…
With a grading previously introduced by the second-named author, the multiplication maps in the preprojective algebra satisfy a maximal rank property that is similar to the maximal rank property proven by Hochster and Laksov for the multiplication maps in the commutative polynomial ring. The result follows from a more general theorem about the maximal rank property of a minimal almost split morphism, which also yields a quadratic inequality for the dimensions of indecomposable modules involved.
It is shown that the idempotent completion of the additive hull of the tensor product of the residue category of the category of paths of a locally finite quiver modulo an admissible ideal and a dualizing category is dualizing. Furthermore, the category of finitely presented functors over such tensor product category is dualizing and has almost split sequences. As applications, the categories of all kinds of complexes are proved to have almost split sequences.
Freyd's generating hypothesis for the stable module category of a non-trivial finite group G is the statement that a map between finitely generated kG-modules that belongs to the thick subcategory generated by k factors through a projective if the induced map on Tate cohomology is trivial. In this paper we show that Freyd's generating hypothesis fails for kG when the Sylow p-subgroup of G has order at least 4 using almost split sequences. By combining this with our earlier work, we obtain a complete answer to Freyd's generating hypothesis for the stable module category of a finite group. We al…
For a suitable triangulated category $\mathcal{T}$ with a Serre functor $S$ and a full precovering subcategory $\mathcal{C}$ closed under summands and extensions, an indecomposable object $C$ in $\mathcal{C}$ is called Ext-projective if Ext$^1(C,\mathcal{C})=0$. Then there is no Auslander-Reiten triangle in $\mathcal{C}$ with end term $C$. In this paper, we show that if, for such an object $C$, there is a minimal right almost split morphism $β:B\rightarrow C$ in $\mathcal{C}$, then $C$ appears in something very similar to an Auslander-Reiten triangle in $\mathcal{C}$: an essentially unique tri…
In 1996, Doty, Nakano and Peters defined infinitesimal Schur algebras, combining the approach via polynomial representations with the approach via $G_r T$-modules to representations of the algebraic group $G = \mathrm{GL}_n$. We study analogues of these algebras and their Auslander-Reiten theory for reductive algebraic groups $G$ and Borel subgroups $B$ by considering the categories of polynomial representations of $G_r T$ and $B_r T$ as full subcategories of $\mathrm{mod} \thinspace G_r T$ and $\mathrm{mod}\thinspace B_r T$, respectively. We show that every component $Θ$ of the stable Ausland…
In this note, we introduce the notion of almost unramified representations of quasi-split unitary groups of even ranks with respect to an unramified quadratic extension of local fields, and study their behavior under the local theta correspondence. These representations are in some sense the least ramified representations that have root number $-1$.
