We study the homogeneous wave equation with radially symmetric data in four or higher space dimensions. Using some new integral representations for the Riemann operator, we establish weighted decay estimates for the solution.
We prove dilation invariant inequalities involving radial functions, poliharmonic operators and weights that are powers of the distance from the origin. Then we discuss the existence of extremals and in some cases we compute the best constants.
For the non cutoff radially symmetric homogeneous Boltzmann equation with Maxwellian molecules, we give the numerical solutions using symbolic manipulations and spectral decomposition of Hermit functions. The initial data can belong to some measure space.
We are concerned with the radially symmetric stationary wave for the exterior problem of two-dimensional Burgers equation. A sufficient and necessary condition to guarantee the existence of such a stationary wave is given and it is also shown that such a stationary wave satisfies nice decay estimates and is time-asymptotically nonlinear stable under radially symmetric perturbation.
In this article a nonlocal elliptic problem involving $p$-Laplacian on unbounded domain is considered. Using variational methods and under suitable conditions, the existence of a sequence of radially symmetric weak solutions, in two different cases, is proved.
Convergence to a single steady state is shown for non-negative and radially symmetric solutions to a diffusive Hamilton-Jacobi equation with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions, the diffusion being the $p$-Laplacian operator, $p\ge 2$, and the source term a power of the norm of the gradient of $u$. As a first step, the radially symmetric and non-increasing stationary solutions are characterized.
In this paper we present an elementary theory about the existence of eigenvalues for fully nonlinear radially symmetric 1-homogeneous operators. A general theory for first eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of 1-homogeneous fully nonlinear operators exists in the framework of viscosity solutions. Here we want to show that for the radially symmetric operators (and one dimensional) a much simpler theory can be established, and that the complete set of eigenvalues and eigenfuctions characterized by the number of zeroes can be obtained.
We consider the minimization of a p-Ginzburg-Landau energy functional over the class of radially symmetric functions of degree one. We prove the existence of a unique minimizer in this class, and show that its modulus is monotone increasing and concave. We also study the asymptotic limit of the minimizers as p \rightarrow \infty. Finally, we prove that the radially symmetric solution is locally stable for $p$ in the interval $(2,4]$.
We consider the problem \begin{equation}(1)\;\;\; \begin{cases} S_k(D^2u)= λ|x|^σ (1-u)^q &\mbox{in }\;\; B,\\ u <0 & \mbox{in }\;\; B,\\ u=0 &\mbox{on }\partial B, \end{cases} \end{equation} where $B$ denotes the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n>2k$ ($k\in \mathbb{N}$), $λ>0$, $q > k$ and $σ\geq 0$. We study the existence, uniqueness and multiplicity of negative bounded radially symmetric solutions of (1). The methodology to obtain our results is based on a dynamical system approach. For this, we introduce a new transformation which reduces problem (1) to an autonomous two dimensional generali…
In this work, we study the Cauchy problem for the radially symmetric spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with Debye-Yukawa potential. We prove that this Cauchy problem enjoys the same smoothing effect as the Cauchy problem defined by the evolution equation associated to a fractional logarithmic harmonic oscillator. To be specific, we can prove the solution of the Cauchy problem belongs to Shubin spaces.
The author gives an alternative and simple proof of the global existence of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for wave maps from the 1+2-dimensional Minkowski space to an arbitrary compact smooth Riemannian manifold without boundary, for arbitrary smooth, radially symmetric data. the author can also treat non-compact manifold under some additional assumptions which generalize the existing ones.
In this paper, for compressible Euler equations in multiple space dimensions, we prove the break-down of classical solutions with a large class of initial data by tracking the propagation of radially symmetric expanding wave including compression. The singularity formation is corresponding to the finite time shock formation. We also provide some new global sup-norm estimates on velocity and density functions for classical solutions. The results in this paper have no restriction on the size of solutions, hence are large data results.
In this article we derive C^1-a priori estimates on the Riemann invariants of the Euler compressible equations in the case of cylindrical or spherical symmetry. These estimates allow then to construct shock waves with a time of existence proportional to the distance to the origin at the initial time.
In this paper a nonlinear coupled Schrodinger system in the presence of mixed cubic and superlinear power laws is considered. Focus are made on the steady state solutions of the continuous system for existence and uniqueness by minimizing problem on some associated Nehari manifold.
This paper is devoted to the generic transversality of radially symmetric stationary solutions of nonlinear parabolic systems of the form \[ \partial_t w(x,t) = -\nabla V\bigl(w((x,t))\bigr) + Δ_x w(x,t) \,, \] where the space variable $x$ is multidimensional and unbounded. It is proved that, generically with respect to the potential $V$, radially symmetric stationary solutions that are stable at infinity (in other words, that approach a minimum point of $V$ at infinity in space) are transverse; as a consequence, the set of such solutions is discrete. This result can be viewed as the extension…
Radially symmetric shadow wave solutions to the system of multidimensional pressureless gas dynamics are introduced, which allow one to capture concentration of mass. The transformation to a one-dimensional system with source terms is performed and physically meaningful boundary conditions at the origin are determined. Entropy conditions are derived and applied to single out physical (nonnegative mass) and dissipative (entropic) solutions. A complete solution to the pseudo-Riemann problem with initial data exhibiting a single shock on a sphere is obtained.
We prove the tightness of radially-symmetric solutions to 2D aggregation-diffusion equations, where the pairwise attraction force is possibly degenerate at large distance. We first reduce the problem into the finiteness of a time integral in the density on a bounded region, by introducing a new assumption on the interaction potential called the essentially radially contractive (ERC) property. Then we prove this finiteness by using the 2-Wasserstein gradient flow structure, combining with the continuous Steiner symmetrization curves and the local clustering curve. This is the first tightness re…
We consider the semilinear curl-curl wave equation $s(x) \partial_t^2 U +\nabla\times\nabla\times U + q(x) U \pm V(x) |U|^{p-1} U = 0 \mbox{ for } (x,t)\in \mathbb{R}^3\times\mathbb{R}$. For any $p>1$ we prove the existence of time-periodic spatially localized real-valued solutions (breathers) both for the $+$ and the $-$ case under slightly different hypotheses. Our solutions are classical solutions that are radially symmetric in space and decay exponentially to $0$ as $|x|\to \infty$. Our method is based on the fact that gradient fields of radially symmetric functions are annihilated by the …
In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem for radially symmetric homogeneous non-cutoff Boltzmann equation with Maxwellian molecules, the initial datum belongs to Shubin space of the negative index which can be characterized by spectral decomposition of the harmonic oscillators. The Shubin space of the negative index contains the measure functions. Based on this spectral decomposition, we construct the weak solution with Shubin class initial datum, we also prove that the Cauchy problem enjoys Gelfand-Shilov smoothing effect, meaning that the smoothing properties are the same as the Cauchy pro…
We establish a variational inequality formulation that captures the transonic shock for a steady compressible potential flow. Its critical point satisfies the transonic equation; moreover the associated jump conditions across its free boundary match the usual Rankine-Hugoniot jump conditions for a shock. By means of example we validate our formulation, and establish the necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a transonic shock. Numerical results are also discussed.
The aim of the paper is to derive spectral estimates on the eigenvalue moments of the magnetic Schroedinger operators defined on the two-dimensional disk with a radially symmetric magnetic field and radially symmetric electric potential.
We prove nonlinear stability of compactly supported expanding star-solutions of the mass-critical gravitational Euler-Poisson system. These special solutions were discovered by Goldreich and Weber in 1980. The expanding rate of such solutions can be either self-similar or non-self-similar (linear), and we treat both types. An important outcome of our stability results is the existence of a new class of global-in-time radially symmetric solutions, which are not homogeneous and therefore not encompassed by the existing works. Using Lagrangian coordinates we reformulate the associated free-bounda…
We consider the quadratic nonlinear Schrödinger system \begin{align*} \begin{cases} i\partial_t u +Δu =v \overline{u},\\ i\partial_t v +κΔv =u^2, \end{cases} \text{ on } I \times \mathbb{R}^d, \end{align*} where $1\leq d \leq 6$ and $κ>0$. In the lower dimensional case $d=1,2,3$, it is known that the $H^1$-solution is global in time. On the other hand, there are finite time blow-up solutions when $d=4,5,6$ and $κ=1/2$. The condition of $κ=1/2$ is called mass-resonance. In this paper, we prove finite time blow-up under radially symmetric assumption when $d=5,6$ and $κ\neq 1/2$ and we show blow-…
We investigate the following eigenvalue problem \begin{align*} \begin{cases} -\operatorname{div}\left( L(x) |\nabla u| ^{p-2}\nabla u\right)=λK(x)|u|^{p-2}u \quad \text{in } A_{R_1}^{R_2} , u=0\quad \text{on } \partial A_{R_1}^{R_2} , \end{cases} \end{align*} where $A_{R_1}^{R_2}:=\{x\in\mathbb{R}^N: R_1<|x|<R_2\}$ $(0< R_1<R_2\leq\infty)$, $λ>0$ is a parameter, the weights $L$ and $K$ are measurable with $L$ positive a.e. in $A_{R_1}^{R_2}$ and $K$ possibly sign-changing in $A_{R_1}^{R_2}$. We prove the existence of the first eigenpair and discuss the regularity and positiveness of eigenfunct…
In this paper, we verify the Glassey conjecture in the radial case for all spatial dimensions, which states that, for the nonlinear wave equations of the form $\Box u=|\nabla u|^p$, the critical exponent to admit global small solutions is given by $p_c=1+\frac{2}{n-1}$. Moreover, we are able to prove the existence results with low regularity assumption on the initial data and extend the solutions to the sharp lifespan. The main idea is to exploit the trace estimates and KSS type estimates.
The optimal lifespan estimates of a solution to weakly coupled systems of wave equations have been investigated by many works, except for the lower bound in even space dimensions. Our aim is to prove the open part under the assumption of radial symmetry on the solution. The odd dimensional case was already obtained in our previous paper by long time existence of the solution in weighted $L^\infty$ space. In this paper, we employ similar methods. The main difficulty is found in estimating the integral kernel which is completely different from odd dimensional case.
We use variational methods to study the existence of nontrivial and radially symmetric solutions to the Hènon-Lane-Emden system with weights, when the exponents involved lie on the "critical hyperbola". We also discuss qualitative properties of solutions and nonexistence results.
This paper is concerned with weighted energy estimates and diffusion phenomena for the initial-boundary problem of the wave equation with space-dependent damping term in an exterior domain. In this analysis, an elliptic problem was introduced by Todorova and Yordanov. This attempt was quite useful when the coefficient of the damping term is radially symmetric. In this paper, by modifying their elliptic problem, we establish weighted energy estimates and diffusion phenomena even when the coefficient of the damping term is not radially symmetric.
We consider two critical Rellich inequalities with singularities at both the origin and the boundary in the higher order critical radial Sobolev spaces $W_{0, {\rm rad}}^{k, p}$, where $1< p = \frac{N}{k}$. We give the explicit values of the optimal constants of two critical Rellich inequalities for radially symmetric functions in $W_{0, {\rm rad}}^{k, \frac{N}{k}}$. Furthermore the (non-)attainability of the optimal constants are also discussed.
This paper concerns with the convergence analysis of a fourth order singular perturbation of the Dirichlet Monge-Ampère problem in the $n$-dimensional radial symmetric case. A detailed study of the fourth order problem is presented. In particular, various {\em a priori} estimates with explicit dependence on the perturbation parameter $\vepsi$ are derived, and a crucial convexity property is also proved for the solution of the fourth order problem. Using these estimates and the convexity property, we prove that the solution of the perturbed problem converges uniformly and compactly to the uniqu…
In this paper we prove that the equation $ -( r^αϕ(|u'(r)|)u'(r))' = λr^γf(u(r)), ~0<r<R$, where $α, γ, {\bf{R}}$ are given real numbers, $ϕ: (0, \infty) \to (0, \infty)$ is a suitable twice differentiable function, $λ> 0$ is a real parameter and $f:{\bf{R}}\to{\bf{R}}$ is continuous, admits an infinite sequence of sign-changing solutions satisfying $u'(0) =u(R) =0$. The function $f$ is required to satisfy $tf(t)>0$ for $ t\neq 0$. Our technique explores fixed point arguments applied to suitable integral equations and shooting arguments. Our main result extends earlier ones in the case $ϕ$ is …
The aim of the paper is to derive spectral estimates on the eigenvalue moments of the magnetic Dirichlet Laplacian defined on the two-dimensional disk with a radially symmetric magnetic field.
We consider radial solutions to the cubic Schr{ö}dinger equation on the Heisenberg group$$i\partial_t u - Δ_{\mathbb{H}^1} u = |u|^2u, \quadΔ_{\mathbb{H}^1} = \frac{1}{4}(\partial_x^2+\partial_y^2) + (x^2+y^2)\partial_s^2, \quad(t,x,y,s) \in \mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{H}^1.$$This equation is a model for totally non-dispersive evolution equations. We show existence of ground state traveling waves with speed $β\in (-1,1)$. When the speed $β$ is sufficiently close to $1$, we prove their uniqueness up to symmetries and their smoothness along the parameter $β$. The main ingredient is the emergence of …
Here, we study radial solutions for first- and second-order stationary Mean-Field Games (MFG) with congestion on $\mathbb{R}^d$. MFGs with congestion model problems where the agents' motion is hampered in high-density regions. The radial case, which is one of the simplest non one-dimensional MFG, is relatively tractable. As we observe in this paper, the Fokker-Planck equation is integrable with respect to one of the unknowns. Consequently, we obtain a single equation substituting this solution into the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. For the first-order case, we derive explicit formulas; for the ell…
Given two probability measures $μ, ν$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$, in subharmonic order, we describe optimal stopping times $τ$ that maximize/minimize the cost functional $\mathbb{E} |B_0 - B_τ|^α$, $α> 0$, where $(B_t)_t$ is Brownian motion with initial law $μ$ and with final distribution --once stopped at $τ$-- equal to $ν$. Under the assumption of radial symmetry on $μ$ and $ν$, we show that in dimension $d \geq 3$ and $α\neq 2$, there exists a unique optimal solution given by a non-randomized stopping time characterized as the hitting time to a suitably symmetric barrier. We also relate this problem…
We prove that the Cauchy problem associated to the radially symmetric spatially homogeneous non-cutoff Boltzmann equation with Maxwellian molecules enjoys the same Gelfand-Shilov regularizing effect as the Cauchy problem defined by the evolution equation associated to a fractional harmonic oscillator.
This paper studies the transport of a mass $μ$ in $\real^d, d \geq 2,$ by a flow field $v= -\nabla K*μ$. We focus on kernels $K=|x|^α/ α$ for $2-d\leq α<2$ for which the smooth densities are known to develop singularities in finite time. For this range This paper studies the transport of a mass $μ$ in $\real^d, d \geq 2,$ by a flow field $v= -\nabla K*μ$. We focus on kernels $K=|x|^α/ α$ for $2-d\leq α<2$ for which the smooth densities are known to develop singularities in finite time.
