Recently, Bercovici has introduced multiplicative convolutions based on Muraki's monotone independence and shown that these convolution of probability measures correspond to the composition of some function of their Cauchy transforms. We provide a new proof of this fact based on the combinatorics of moments. We also give a new characterisation of the probability measures that can be embedded into continuous monotone convolution semigroups of probability measures on the unit circle and briefly discuss a relation to Galton-Watson processes.
We study the multiplicative convolution for c-monotone independence. This convolution unifies the monotone, Boolean and orthogonal multiplicative convolutions. We characterize convolution semigroups for the c-monotone multiplicative convolution on the unit circle. We also prove that an infinitely divisible distribution can always be embedded in a convolution semigroup. We furthermore discuss the (non)-uniqueness of such embeddings including the monotone case. Finally connections to the multiplicative Boolean convolution are discussed.
Semilinear stochastic evolution equations with multiplicative Poisson noise and monotone nonlinear drift are considered. We do not impose coercivity conditions on coefficients. A novel method of proof for establishing existence and uniqueness of the mild solution is proposed. Examples on stochastic partial differential equations and stochastic delay differential equations are provided to demonstrate the theory developed.
We show that the monotonic independence introduced by Muraki can also be used to define a multiplicative convolution. We also find a method for the calculation of this convolution based on an appropriate form of the Cauchy transform. We discuss infinite divisibility in the multiplicative monotonic context as well.
The main goal of this article is to study the effect of small, highly nonlinear, unbounded drifts (small time large deviation principle (LDP) based on exponential equivalence arguments) for a class of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with fully monotone coefficients driven by multiplicative Gaussian noise. The small time LDP obtained in this paper is applicable for various quasi-linear and semilinear SPDEs such as porous medium equations, Cahn-Hilliard equation, 2D Navier-Stokes equations, convection-diffusion equation, 2D liquid crystal model, power law fluids, Ladyzhenskaya …
Semilinear stochastic evolution equations with Lévy noise and monotone nonlinear drift are considered. The existence and uniqueness of the mild solutions in $L^p$ for these equations is proved and a sufficient condition for exponential asymptotic stability of the solutions is derived. The main tool in our study is an Itô type inequality for the $p$th power of stochastic convolution integrals in Hilbert spaces.
We demonstrate the large deviation property for the mild solutions of stochastic evolution equations with monotone nonlinearity and multiplica- tive noise. This is achieved using the recently developed weak convergence method, in studying the large deviation principle. An It^o-type inequality is a main tool in the proofs. We also give two examples to illustrate the applications of the theorems.
Semilinear stochastic evolution equations with multiplicative Lévy noise and monotone nonlinear drift are considered. Unlike other similar works, we do not impose coercivity conditions on coefficients. We establish the continuous dependence of the mild solution with respect to initial conditions and also on coefficients which as far as we know, has not been proved before. As corollaries of the continuity result, we derive sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability of the solutions, we show that Yosida approximations converge to the solution and we prove that solutions have Markov property.…
We consider a pair of probability measures $μ,ν$ on the unit circle such that $Σ_λ(η_ν(z))=z/η_μ(z)$. We prove that the same type of equation holds for any $t\geq 0$ when we replace $ν$ by $ν\boxtimesλ_t$ and $μ$ by $\mathbb{M}_t(μ)$, where $λ_t$ is the free multiplicative analogue of the normal distribution on the unit circle of $\mathbb{C}$ and $\mathbb{M}_t$ is the map defined by Arizmendi and Hasebe. These equations are a multiplicative analogue of equations studied by Belinschi and Nica. In order to achieve this result, we study infinite divisibility of the measures associated with subord…
We investigate relations between additive convolution semigroup and max-convolution semigroup through the law of large numbers for the free multiplicative convolution. Based on the relation, we give a formula related with Belinschi-Nica semigroup and max-Belinschi-Nica semigroup. Finally, we give several limit theorems for classical, free and Boolean extreme values.
This paper describes the quality of convergence to an infinitely divisible law relative to free multiplicative convolution. We show that convergence in distribution for products of identically distributed and infinitesimal free random variables implies superconvergence of their probability densities to the density of the limit law. Superconvergence to the marginal law of free multiplicative Brownian motion at a specified time is also studied. In the unitary case, the superconvergence to free Brownian motion and that to the Haar measure are shown to be uniform over the entire unit circle, imply…
We establish a general theory of optimal strong error estimation for numerical approximations of a second-order parabolic stochastic partial differential equation with monotone drift driven by a multiplicative infinite-dimensional Wiener process. The equation is spatially discretized by Galerkin methods and temporally discretized by drift-implicit Euler and Milstein schemes. By the monotone and Lyapunov assumptions, we use both the variational and semigroup approaches to derive a spatial Sobolev regularity under the $L_ω^p L_t^\infty \dot H^{1+γ}$-norm and a temporal Hölder regularity under th…
This article focuses on properties of monotone convolutions. A criterion for infinite divisibility and time evolution of convolution semigroups are mainly studied. In particular, we clarify that many analogues of the classical results of Lévy processes hold such as characterizations of subordinators and strictly stable distributions.
We define a product of algebraic probability spaces equipped with two states. This product is called a conditionally monotone product. This product is a new example of independence in non-commutative probability theory and unifies the monotone and Boolean products, and moreover, the orthogonal product. Then we define the associated cumulants and calculate the limit distributions in central limit theorem and Poisson's law of small numbers. We also prove a combinatorial moment-cumulant formula using monotone partitions. We investigate some other topics such as infinite divisibility for the addit…
In this paper, we determine the effect of the free multiplicative convolution on the pseudo-variance function of a Cauchy-Stieltjes kernel family. We then use the machinery of variance functions to establish some limit theorems related to this type of convolution and involving the free additive convolution and the boolean additive convolution.
We study the convergence of a Douglas-Rachford type splitting algorithm for the infinite dimensional stochastic differential equation $$dX+A(t)(X)dt=X\,dW\mbox{ in }(0,T);\ X(0)=x,$$ where $A(t):V\to V'$ is a nonlinear, monotone, coercive and demicontinuous operator with sublinear growth and $V$ is a real Hilbert space with the dual $V'$. $V$ is densely and continuously embedded in the Hilbert space $H$ and $W$ is an $H$-valued Wiener process. The general case of a maximal monotone operators $A(t):H\to H$ is also investigated.
We study the distribution (w.r.t. the vacuum state) of family of partial sums Sm of position operators on weakly monotone Fock space. We show that any single operator has the Wigner law, and an arbitrary family of them (with the index set linearly ordered) is a collection of monotone independent random variables. It turns out that our problem equivalently consists in finding the m-fold monotone convolution of the semicircle law. For m = 2 we compute the explicit distribution. For any m > 2 we give the moments of the measure, and show it is absolutely continuous and compactly supported on a sym…
We obtain a formula for the density of the free convolution of an arbitrary probability measure on the unit circle of $\mathbb{C}$ with the free multiplicative analogues of the normal distribution on the unit circle. This description relies on a characterization of the image of the unit disc under the subordination function, which also allows us to prove some regularity properties of the measures obtained in this way. As an application, we give a new proof for Biane's classic result on the densities of the free multiplicative analogue of the normal distributions. We obtain analogue results for…
In this paper free harmonic analysis tools are used to study parabolic iteration in the complex upper half-plane. The main result here is a complete characterization for the norming constants in the monotonic central limit theorem. This allows us to construct a new class of conservative and ergodic measure-preserving transformations on the real line with Lebesgue measure. Among all, we mention that the generalized Boole transformation with infinitely many poles is shown to be conservative, as long as its residues are summable.
We provide the law of large numbers for roots of finite free multiplicative convolution of polynomials which have only non-negative real roots. Moreover, we study the empirical root distributions of limit polynomials obtained through the law of large numbers of finite free multiplicative convolution when their degree tends to infinity.
Let $Y$ be a standard Gamma(k) distributed random variable, $k>0$, and let $X$ be an independent positive random variable. We prove that if $X$ has a hyperbolically monotone density of order $k$ ($HM_k$), then the distributions of $Y\cdot X$ and $Y/X$ are generalized gamma convolutions (GGC). This result extends results of Roynette et al. and Behme and Bondesson, who treated respectively the cases $k=1$ and $k$ an integer. We give a proof that covers all $k>0$ and gives explicit formulas for the relevant functions that extend those found by Behme and Bondesson in the integer case.
In this paper, we characterize idempotent distributions with respect to the bi-free multiplicative convolution on the bi-torus. Also, the bi-free analogous Levy triplet of an infinitely divisible distribution on the bi-torus without non-trivial idempotent factors is obtained. This triplet is unique and generates a homomorphism from the bi-free multiplicative semigroup of infinitely divisible distributions to the classical one. The relevances of the limit theorems associated with four convolutions, classical and bi-free additive convolutions and classical and bi-free multiplicative convolutions…
Given two nondegenerate Borel probability measures $μ$ and $ν$ on $\mathbb{R}_{+}=[0,\infty)$, we prove that their free multiplicative convolution $μ\boxtimesν$ has zero singular continuous part and its absolutely continuous part has a density bounded by $x^{-1}$. When $μ$ and $ν$ are compactly supported Jacobi measures on $(0,\infty)$ having power law behavior with exponents in $(-1,1)$, we prove that $μ\boxtimesν$ is another Jacobi measure whose density has square root decay at the edges of its support.
This paper investigates homomorphisms à la Bercovici-Pata between additive and multiplicative convolutions. We also consider their matricial versions which are associated with measures on the space of Hermitian matrices and on the unitary group. The previous results combined with a matricial model of Benaych-Georges and Cabanal-Duvillard allows us to define and study the large N limit of a new matricial model on the unitary group for free multiplicative Lévy processes.
Let $\boxplus$, $\boxtimes$ and $\uplus$ be the free additive, free multiplicative, and boolean additive convolutions, respectively. For a probability measure $μ$ on $[0,\infty)$ with finite second moment, we find the scaling limit of $(μ^{\boxtimes N})^{\boxplus N}$ as $N$ goes to infinity. The $\mathcal{R}$--transform of the limit distribution can be represented by the Lambert's $W$ function. We also find similar limit theorem by replacing the free additive convolution with the boolean convolution.
We estimate the concentration functions of $n$-fold convolutions of one-dimensional probability measures. The main result is a supplement to the results of Götze and Zaitsev (1998). We show that the estimation of concentration functions at arguments of bounded size can be reduced to the estimation of these functions at arguments of size $O(\sqrt n)$ which is easier.
We determine the distributional behavior for products of free random variables in a general infinitesimal triangular array. In the case of positive variables, the main theorem extends a result proved earlier for arrays with identically distributed rows. The case of unitary variables is considered as well.
In a 1999 paper, Bercovici and Pata showed that a natural bijection between the classically, free and Boolean infinitely divisible measures held at the level of limit theorems of triangular arrays. This result was extended to include monotone convolution by the authors. In recent years, operator-valued versions of free, Boolean and monotone probability have also been developed. Belinschi, Popa and Vinnikov showed that the Bercovici-Pata bijection holds for the operator-valued versions of free and Boolean probability. In this article, we extend the bijection to include monotone probability theo…
We study unimodality for free multiplicative convolution with free normal distributions $\{λ_t\}_{t>0}$ on the unit circle. We give four results on unimodality for $μ\boxtimesλ_t$: (1) if $μ$ is a symmetric unimodal distribution on the unit circle then so is $μ\boxtimes λ_t$ at any time $t>0$; (2) if $μ$ is a symmetric distribution on $\mathbb{T}$ supported on $\{e^{iθ}: θ\in [-φ,φ]\}$ for some $φ\in (0,π/2)$, then $μ\boxtimes λ_t$ is unimodal for sufficiently large $t>0$; (3) ${\bf b} \boxtimes λ_t$ is not unimodal at any time $t>0$, where ${\bf b}$ is the equally weighted Bernoulli distribut…
Free probability and random matrix theory has shown to be a fruitful combination in many fields of research, such as digital communications, nuclear physics and mathematical finance. The link between free probability and eigenvalue distributions of random matrices will be strengthened further in this paper. It will be shown how the concept of multiplicative free convolution can be used to express known results for eigenvalue distributions of a type of random matrices called Information-Plus-Noise matrices. The result is proved in a free probability framework, and some new results, useful for p…
We study Boolean stable laws, $\mathbf{b}_{α,ρ}$, with stability index $α$ and asymmetry parameter $ρ$. We show that the classical scale mixture of $\mathbf{b}_{α,ρ}$ coincides with a free mixture and also a monotone mixture of $\mathbf{b}_{α,ρ}$. For this purpose we define the multiplicative monotone convolution of probability measures, one is supported on the positive real line and the other is arbitrary. We prove that any scale mixture of $\mathbf{b}_{α,ρ}$ is both classically and freely infinitely divisible for $α\leq1/2$ and also for some $α>1/2$. Furthermore, we show the multiplicative i…
We give an explicit description, via analytic subordination, of free multiplicative convolution of operator-valued distributions. In particular, the subordination function is obtained from an iteration process. This algorithm is easily numerically implementable. We present two concrete applications of our method: the product of two free operator-valued semicircular elements and the calculation of the distribution of $dcd+d^2cd^2$ for scalar-valued $c$ and $d$, which are free. Comparision between the solution obtained by our methods and simulations of random matrices shows excellent agreement.
In classical probability the law of large numbers for the multiplicative convolution follows directly from the law for the additive convolution. In free probability this is not the case. The free additive law was proved by D. Voiculescu in 1986 for probability measures with bounded support and extended to all probability measures with first moment by J. M. Lindsay and V. Pata in 1997, while the free multiplicative law was proved only recently by G. Tucci in 2010. In this paper we extend Tucci's result to measures with unbounded support while at the same time giving a more elementary proof for …
We realize the Belinschi-Nica semigroup of homomorphisms as a free multiplicative subordination. This realization allows to define more general semigroups of homomorphisms with respect to free multiplicative convolution. For these semigroups we show that a differential equation holds, generalizing the complex Burgers equation. We give examples of free multiplicative subordination and find a relation to the Markov-Krein transform, Boolean stable laws and monotone stable laws. A similar idea works for additive subordination, and in particular we study the free additive subordination associated t…
We study $N$-ary non-commutative notions of independence, which are given by trees and which generalize free, Boolean, and monotone independence. For every rooted subtree $\mathcal{T}$ of the $N$-regular tree, we define the $\mathcal{T}$-free product of $N$ non-commutative probability spaces and we define the $\mathcal{T}$-free additive convolution of $N$ non-commutative laws. These $N$-ary convolution operations form a topological symmetric operad which includes the free, Boolean, monotone, and anti-monotone convolutions, as well as the orthogonal and subordination convolutions. Using the ope…
We study the asymptotic behavior of solutions to stochastic evolution equations with monotone drift and multiplicative Poisson noise in the variational setting, thus covering a large class of (fully) nonlinear partial differential equations perturbed by jump noise. In particular, we provide sufficient conditions for the existence, ergodicity, and uniqueness of invariant measures. Furthermore, under mild additional assumptions, we prove that the Kolmogorov equation associated to the stochastic equation with additive noise is solvable in $L_1$ spaces with respect to an invariant measure.
Semilinear stochastic evolution equations with multiplicative Lévy noise and monotone nonlinear drift are considered. Unlike other similar work we do not impose coercivity conditions on coefficients. Existence and uniqueness of the mild solution is proved using an iterative method. The continuity of the solution with respect to initial conditions and coefficients is proved and a sufficient condition for exponential asymptotic stability of the solutions has been derived. The solutions are proved to have a Markov property. Examples on stochastic partial differential equations and stochastic dela…
We show that the Poincaré constant of a log-concave measure in Euclidean space is monotone increasing along the heat flow. In fact, the entire spectrum of the associated Laplace operator is monotone decreasing. Two proofs of these results are given. The first proof analyzes a curvature term of a certain time-dependent diffusion, and the second proof constructs a contracting transport map following the approach of Kim and Milman.
Bercovici and Pata showed that the correspondence between classically, freely, and Boolean infinitely divisible distributions holds on the level of limit theorems. We extend this correspondence also to distributions infinitely divisible with respect to the additive monotone convolution. Because of non-commutativity of this convolution, we use a new technique based on the Chernoff product formula. In fact, the correspondence between the Boolean and monotone limit theorems extends from probability measures to positive measures of total weight at most one. Finally, we study this correspondence fo…
Belinschi and Nica introduced a composition semigroup on the set of probability measures. Using this semigroup, they introduced a free divisibility indicator, from which one can know whether a probability measure is freely infinitely divisible or not. In this paper we further investigate this indicator, introduce a multiplicative version of it and are able to show many properties. Specifically, on the first half of the paper, we calculate how the indicator changes with respect to free and Boolean powers; we prove that free and Boolean 1/2-stable laws have free divisibility indicators equal to …

Let M denote the space of Borel probability measures on the real line. For every nonnegative t we consider the transformation $\mathbb B_t : M \to M$ defined for any given element in M by taking succesively the the (1+t) power with respect to free additive convolution and then the 1/(1+t) power with respect to Boolean convolution of the given element. We show that the family of maps {\mathbb B_t|t\geq 0} is a semigroup with respect to the operation of composition and that, quite surprisingly, every $\mathbb B_t$ is a homomorphism for the operation of free multiplicative convolution. We prove t…
We study the behavior of the tail of a measure $μ^{\boxtimes t}$, where $\boxtimes t$ is the $t$-fold free multiplicative convolution power for $t\geq 1$. We focus on the case where $μ$ is a probability measure on the positive half-line with a regularly varying tail i.e. of the form $x^{-α} L(x)$, where $L$ is slowly varying. We obtain a phase transition in the behavior of the tail of $μ^{\boxplus t}$ between regimes $α<1$ and $α>1$. Our main tool is a description of the regularly varying tails of $μ$ in terms of the behavior of the corresponding $S$-transform at $0^-$. We also describe the ta…
The wrapping transformation $W$ is a homomorphism from the semigroup of probability measures on the real line, with the convolution operation, to the semigroup of probability measures on the circle, with the multiplicative convolution operation. We show that on a large class $\mathcal{L}$ of measures, $W$ also transforms the three non-commutative convolutions---free, Boolean, and monotone---to their multiplicative counterparts. Moreover, the restriction of $W$ to $\mathcal{L}$ preserves various qualitative properties of measures and triangular arrays. We use these facts to give short proofs of…
