We construct an explicit generating sets $F_n$ and $\tilde F_n$ of the alternating and the symmetric groups, which make the Cayley graphs $C(Alt(n), F_n)$ and $C(Sym(n), \tilde F_n)$ a family of bounded degree expanders for all sufficiently large $n$. These expanders have many applications in the theory of random walks on groups and other areas of mathematics.
We construct explicit generating sets S_n and \tilde S_n of the for the alternating and the symmetric groups, which turn the Cayley graphs C(Alt(n), S_n) and C(Sym(n), \tilde S_n) into a family of bounded degree expanders for all n. This answers affirmatively an old question which has been asked many times in the literature. These expanders have many applications in the theory of random walks on groups, card shuffling and other areas.
We show that pairs of generators for the family Sz(q) of Suzuki groups may be selected so that the corresponding Cayley graphs are expanders. By combining this with several deep works of Kassabov, Lubotzky and Nikolov, this establishes that the family of all non-abelian finite simple groups can be made into expanders in a uniform fashion.
Using the construction of a nonorientable Curtis-Tits group of type $\tilde A_n$, we obtain new explicit families of expander graphs of valency five for unitary groups over finite fields.
We study the representations of non-commutative universal lattices and use them to compute lower bounds for the \TauC for the commutative universal lattices $G_{d,k}= \SL_d(\Z[x_1,...,x_k])$ with respect to several generating sets. As an application of the above result we show that the Cayley graphs of the finite groups $\SL_{3k}(\F_p)$ can be made expanders using suitable choice of the generators. This provides the first examples of expander families of groups of Lie type where the rank is not bounded and gives a natural (and explicit) counter examples to two conjectures of Alex Lubotzky and …
The purpose of this article is to give a characterization of families of expander graphs via right-angled Artin groups. We prove that a sequence of simplicial graphs $\{Γ_i\}_{i\in\mathbb{N}}$ forms a family of expander graphs if and only if a certain natural mini-max invariant arising from the cup product in the cohomology rings of the groups $\{A(Γ_i)\}_{i\in\mathbb{N}}$ agrees with the Cheeger constant of the sequence of graphs, thus allowing us to characterize expander graphs via cohomology. This result is proved in the more general framework of \emph{vector space expanders}, a novel struc…
Let $Γ$ be a group of type $F_n$ and let $X$ be the $n$ skeleton of the universal cover of a $K(Γ,1)$ simplicial complex with finite $n$ skeleton. We show that if $Γ$ is strongly $n$-Kazhdan, then for any family of finite index subgroups $\{Λ_i\}_i$, the family of simplicial complexes $\{Λ_i\backslash X\}_i$ are bounded degree $n$-dimensional spectral expanders. Using this we construct new examples of $2$ dimensional spectral expanders.
We prove that there exist $k\in N$ and $0<ε\in R$ such that every non-abelian finite simple group $G$, which is not a Suzuki group, has a set of $k$ generators for which the Cayley graph $\Cay(G; S)$ is an $ε$-expander.
We construct box spaces of a free group that do not coarsely embed into a Hilbert space, but do not contain coarsely embedded expanders. We do this by considering two sequences of subgroups of the free group: one which gives rise to a box space which forms an expander, and another which gives rise to a box space that can be coarsely embedded into a Hilbert space. We then take certain intersections of these subgroups, and prove that the corresponding box space contains generalized expanders. We show that there are no coarsely embedded expanders in the box space corresponding to our chosen seque…
A graph $X$ is defined inductively to be $(a_0,\dots,a_{n-1})$-regular if $X$ is $a_0$-regular and for every vertex $v$ of $X$, the sphere of radius $1$ around $v$ is an $(a_1,\dots,a_{n-1})$-regular graph. Such a graph $X$ is said to be highly regular (HR) of level $n$ if $a_{n-1}\neq 0$. Chapman, Linial and Peled studied HR-graphs of level 2 and provided several methods to construct families of graphs which are expanders "globally and locally". They ask whether such HR-graphs of level 3 exist. In this paper we show how the theory of Coxeter groups, and abstract regular polytopes and their ge…
We present new infinite families of expander graphs of vertex degree 4, which is the minimal possible degree for Cayley graph expanders. Our first family defines a tower of coverings (with covering indices equals 2) and our second family is given as Cayley graphs of finite groups with very short presentations with only 2 generators and 4 relations. Both families are based on particular finite quotients of a group G of infinite upper triangular matrices over the ring M(3,F2). We present explicit vector space bases for the finite abelian quotients of the lower exponent-2 groups of G by upper tri…
For n at least 2, the concept of n-way expanders was defined by various researchers. Bigger n gives a weaker notion in general, and 2-way expanders coincide with expanders in usual sense. Koji Fujiwara asked whether these concepts are equivalent to that of ordinary expanders for all n for a sequence of Cayley graphs. In this paper, we answer his question in the affirmative. Furthermore, we obtain universal inequalities on multi-way isoperimetric constants on any finite connected vertex-transitive graph, and show that gaps between these constants imply the imprimitivity of the group action on t…
We study the geometry of warped cones over free, minimal isometric group actions and related constructions of expander graphs. We prove a rigidity theorem for the coarse geometry of such warped cones: Namely, if a group has no abelian factors, then two such warped cones are quasi-isometric if and only if the actions are finite covers of conjugate actions. As a consequence, we produce continuous families of non-quasi-isometric expanders and superexpanders. The proof relies on the use of coarse topology for warped cones, such as a computation of their coarse fundamental groups.
We consider box spaces of finitely generated, residually finite groups $G$, and try to distinguish them up to coarse equivalence. We show that, for $n\geq 2$, the group $SL_n(\mathbb{Z})$ has a continuum of box spaces which are pairwise non-coarsely equivalent expanders. Moreover, varying the integer $n\geq 3$, expanders given as box spaces of $SL_n(\mathbb{Z})$ are pairwise inequivalent; similarly, varying the prime $p$, expanders given as box spaces of $SL_2(\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{p}])$ are pairwise inequivalent. A strong form of non-expansion for a box space is the existence of $α\in]0,1]$ such t…
In this paper we compute the discrete fundamental groups of warped cones. As an immediate consequence, this allows us to show that there exist coarsely simply-connected expanders and superexpanders. This also provides a strong coarse invariant of warped cones and implies that many warped cones cannot be coarsely equivalent to any box space.
Answering a question asked by Agol and Wise, we show that a desired stronger form of Wise's malnormal special quotient theorem does not hold. The counterexamples are generalizations of triangle groups, built using the Ramanujan graphs constructed by Lubotzky--Phillips--Sarnak.
In this paper, the first of a series of two, we continue the study of higher index theory for expanders. We prove that if a sequence of graphs is an expander and the girth of the graphs tends to infinity, then the coarse Baum-Connes assembly map is injective, but not surjective, for the associated metric space $X$. Expanders with this girth property are a necessary ingredient in the construction of the so-called `Gromov monster' groups that (coarsely) contain expanders in their Cayley graphs. We use this connection to show that the Baum-Connes assembly map with certain coefficients is injectiv…
We prove Bowen's conjecture that every sequence of finite graphs that locally converges to the Cayley graph of a countably infinite group with Kazhdan Property (T) is essentially a vertex-disjoint union of expander graphs. We characterize graph sequences that are essentially a vertex-disjoint union of expander graphs in terms of the Markov operator.
In this paper, the second of a series of two, we continue the study of higher index theory for expanders. We prove that if a sequence of graphs has girth tending to infinity, then the maximal coarse Baum-Connes assembly map is an isomorphism for the associated metric space $X$. As discussed in the first paper in this series, this has applications to the Baum-Connes conjecture for `Gromov monster' groups. We also introduce a new property, `geometric property (T)'. For the metric space associated to a sequence of graphs, this property is an obstruction to the maximal coarse assembly map being an…
Let $Φ$ be an irreducible root system (other than $G_2$) of rank at least $2$, let $\mathbb{F}$ be a finite field with $p = \operatorname{char} \mathbb{F} > 3$, and let $\mathrm{G}(Φ,\mathbb{F})$ be the corresponding Chevalley group. We describe a strongly explicit high-dimensional expander (HDX) family of dimension $\mathrm{rank}(Φ)$, where $\mathrm{G}(Φ,\mathbb{F})$ acts simply transitively on the top-dimensional faces; these are $λ$-spectral HDXs with $λ\to 0$ as $p \to \infty$. This generalizes a construction of Kaufman and Oppenheim (STOC 2018), which corresponds to the case $Φ= A_d$. Our…
Let the group $G$ act transitively on the finite set $Ω$, and let $S \subseteq G$ be closed under taking inverses. The Schreier graph $Sch(G \circlearrowleft Ω,S)$ is the graph with vertex set $Ω$ and edge set $\{ (ω,ω^s) : ω\in Ω, s \in S \}$. In this paper, we show that random Schreier graphs on $C \log|Ω|$ elements exhibit a (two-sided) spectral gap with high probability, magnifying a well known theorem of Alon and Roichman for Cayley graphs. On the other hand, depending on the particular action of $G$ on $Ω$, we give a lower bound on the number of elements which are necessary to provide a …
Let G be a finitely presented group, and let {G_i} be a collection of finite index normal subgroups that is closed under intersections. Then, we prove that at least one of the following must hold: 1. G_i is an amalgamated free product or HNN extension, for infinitely many i; 2. the Cayley graphs of G/G_i (with respect to a fixed finite set of generators for G) form an expanding family; 3. inf_i (d(G_i)-1)/[G:G_i] = 0, where d(G_i) is the rank of G_i. The proof involves an analysis of the geometry and topology of finite Cayley graphs. Several applications of this result are given.
It is known that the expanders arising as increasing sequences of level sets of warped cones, as introduced by the second-named author, do not coarsely embed into a Banach space as soon as the corresponding warped cone does not coarsely embed into this Banach space. Combining this with non-embeddability results for warped cones by Nowak and Sawicki, which relate the non-embeddability of a warped cone to a spectral gap property of the underlying action, we provide new examples of expanders that do not coarsely embed into any Banach space with nontrivial type. Moreover, we prove that these expan…
We construct small cancellation labellings for some infinite sequences of finite graphs of bounded degree. We use them to define infinite graphical small cancellation presentations of groups. This technique allows us to provide examples of groups with exotic properties: - We construct the first examples of finitely generated coarsely non-amenable groups (that is, groups without Guoliang Yu's Property A) that are coarsely embeddable into a Hilbert space. Moreover, our groups act properly on CAT(0) cubical complexes. - We construct the first examples of finitely generated groups, with expanders …
We study permanence results for almost quasi-isometries, the maps arising from the Gromov construction of finitely generated random groups that contain expanders (and hence that are not C*-exact). We show that the image of a sequence of finite graphs of large girth and controlled vertex degrees under an almost quasi-isometry does not have Guoliang Yu's property A. We use this result to broaden the application of Gromov's techniques to sequences of graphs which are not necessarily expanders. Thus, we obtain more examples of finitely generated non-C*-exact groups.
We construct the first examples of residually finite non-exact groups. The construction is based on author's earlier construction of groups containing isometrically expanders using a graphical small cancellation.
We prove that if L is a finite simple group of Lie type and A a symmetric set of generators of L, then A grows i.e |AAA| > |A|^(1+epsilon) where epsilon depends only on the Lie rank of L, or AAA=L. This implies that for a family of simple groups L of Lie type the diameter of any Cayley graph is polylogarithmic in |L|. Combining our result on growth with known results of Bourgain,Gamburd and Varjú it follows that if LAMBDA is a Zariski-dense subgroup of SL(d,Z) generated by a finite symmetric set S, then for square-free moduli m which are relatively prime to some number m_0 the Cayley graphs Ga…
Let $g$, $h$ be a random pair of generators of $G=Sym(n)$ or $G=Alt(n)$. We show that, with probability tending to $1$ as $n\to \infty$, (a) the diameter of $G$ with respect to $S = \{g,h,g^{-1},h^{-1}\}$ is at most $O(n^2 (\log n)^c)$, and (b) the mixing time of $G$ with respect to $S$ is at most $O(n^3 (\log n)^c)$. (Both $c$ and the implied constants are absolute.) These bounds are far lower than the strongest worst-case bounds known (in Helfgott--Seress, 2013); they roughly match the worst known examples. We also give an improved, though still non-constant, bound on the spectral gap. Our r…
Let Ga be a subgroup of GL_d(Q) generated by a finite symmetric set S. For an integer q, denote by Ga_q the subgroup of Ga consisting of the elements that project to the unit element mod q. We prove that the Cayley graphs of Ga/Ga_q with respect to the generating set S form a family of expanders when q ranges over square-free integers with large prime divisors if and only if the connected component of the Zariski-closure of Ga is perfect.
We give a rank augmentation technique for rank 3 string C-group representations of the symmetric group $S_n$ and list the hypotheses under which it yields a valid string C-group representation of rank 4 thereof.
In this paper, following the methods of http://arxiv.org/abs/1305.7449v2, we show that the double covering groups of the symmetric and alternating groups have p-basic sets for any odd prime p.
We construct new examples of expander Cayley graphs of finite groups, arising as congruence quotients of non-elementary subgroups of $SL_2 (\mathbb{F}_p [t])$ modulo certain square-free ideals. We describe some applications of our results to simple random walks on such subgroups, specifically giving bounds on the rate of escape of such walks from algebraic subvarieties, the set of squares and the set of elements with reducible characteristic polynomial in $SL_2 (\mathbb{F}_p [t])$.
We describe those group algebras over fields of characteristic different from 2 whose units symmetric with respect to the classical involution, satisfy some group identity.
The paper investigates exterior and symmetric (co)homologies of groups. We introduce symmetric homology of groups and compute exterior and symmetric (co)homologies of some finite groups. We also compare the classical, exterior and symmetric (co)homologies. Finally, we derive restriction and corestriction homomorphisms for exterior cohomology
The strong symmetric genus of a group is the smallest genus of a surface on which the group acts faithfully as a group of orientation preserving automorphisms. In this paper we announce and prove the strong symmetric genus for the hyperoctahedral groups. This parameter is already known for the alternating and symmetric groups as well as the sporadic finite simple groups.
We derive an asymptotic expansion for the subgroup of arbitrary Fuchsian groups and some other classes of large groups. Moreover, the main conjecture for Random Walks on symmetric groups is established in full generality. Both problems require subtle estimates of character values and root number multiplicities for symmetric groups, which are also of independent interest.
In this paper, we introduce a symmetric continuous cohomology of topological groups. This is obtained by topologizing a recent construction due to Staic (J. Algebra 322 (2009), 1360-1378), where a symmetric cohomology of abstract groups is constructed. We give a characterization of topological group extensions that correspond to elements of the second symmetric continuous cohomology. We also show that the symmetric continuous cohomology of a profinite group with coefficients in a discrete module is equal to the direct limit of the symmetric cohomology of finite groups. In the end, we also defi…
