We study the representations of non-commutative universal lattices and use them to compute lower bounds for the \TauC for the commutative universal lattices $G_{d,k}= \SL_d(\Z[x_1,...,x_k])$ with respect to several generating sets.
As an application of the above result we show that the Cayley graphs of the finite groups $\SL_{3k}(\F_p)$ can be made expanders using suitable choice of the generators. This provides the first examples of expander families of groups of Lie type where the rank is not bounded and gives a natural (and explicit) counter examples to two conjectures of Alex Lubotzky and Benjamin Weiss.
Let G be a finitely presented group, and let {G_i} be a collection of finite index normal subgroups that is closed under intersections. Then, we prove that at least one of the following must hold: 1. G_i is an amalgamated free product or HNN extension, for infinitely many i; 2. the Cayley graphs of G/G_i (with respect to a fixed finite set of generators for G) form an expanding family; 3. inf_i (d(G_i)-1)/[G:G_i] = 0, where d(G_i) is the rank of G_i. The proof involves an analysis of the geometry and topology of finite Cayley graphs. Several applications of this result are given.
This article contains two rigidity type results for $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{Z})$ for large $n$ that share the same proof. Firstly, we prove that for every $p \in [1,\infty]$ different from $2$, the noncommutative $L^p$-space associated with $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{Z})$ does not have the completely bounded approximation property for sufficiently large $n$ depending on $p$. The second result concerns the coarse embeddability of expander families constructed from $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{Z})$. Let $X$ be a Banach space and suppose that there exist $β< \frac{1}{2}$ and $C>0$ such that the Banach-Mazur…
Let $Φ$ be an irreducible root system (other than $G_2$) of rank at least $2$, let $\mathbb{F}$ be a finite field with $p = \operatorname{char} \mathbb{F} > 3$, and let $\mathrm{G}(Φ,\mathbb{F})$ be the corresponding Chevalley group. We describe a strongly explicit high-dimensional expander (HDX) family of dimension $\mathrm{rank}(Φ)$, where $\mathrm{G}(Φ,\mathbb{F})$ acts simply transitively on the top-dimensional faces; these are $λ$-spectral HDXs with $λ\to 0$ as $p \to \infty$. This generalizes a construction of Kaufman and Oppenheim (STOC 2018), which corresponds to the case $Φ= A_d$. Our…
In [Laf08], [Laf09], Vincent Lafforgue proved strong Banach property (T) for $SL_3$ over a non archimedean local field $F.$ In this paper, we extend his results to $Sp_4$ and therefore to any connected almost $F$-simple algebraic group with $F$-split rank $\geq 2.$ As applications, the family of expanders constructed from any lattice of such a group do not admit a uniform embedding into any Banach space of type $>1,$ and any isometric affine action of such a group, or its cocompact lattice, on a Banach space of type $>1$ has a fixed point.

We prove that if L is a finite simple group of Lie type and A a symmetric set of generators of L, then A grows i.e |AAA| > |A|^{1+epsilon} where epsilon depends only on the Lie rank of L, or AAA=L. This implies that for a family of simple groups L of Lie type of bounded rank the diameter of any Cayley graph is polylogarithmic in |L|. We obtain a similar bound for the diameters of all Cayley graphs of perfect subgroups of GL(n,p) generated by their elements of order p. We also obtain some new families of expanders. We also prove the following partial extension. Let G be a subgroup of GL(n,p), p…
We prove that connected higher rank simple Lie groups have Lafforgue's strong property (T) with respect to a certain class of Banach spaces $\mathcal{E}_{10}$ containing many classical superreflexive spaces and some non-reflexive spaces as well. This generalizes the result of Lafforgue asserting that $\mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{R})$ has strong property (T) with respect to Hilbert spaces and the more recent result of the second named author asserting that $\mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{R})$ has strong property (T) with respect to a certain larger class of Banach spaces. For the generalization to higher rank…
We investigate unbounded domains in hierarchically hyperbolic groups and obtain constraints on the possible hierarchical structures. Using these insights, we characterise the structures of virtually abelian HHGs and show that the class of HHGs is not closed under finite extensions. This provides a strong answer to the question of whether being an HHG is invariant under quasiisometries. Along the way, we show that infinite torsion groups are not HHGs. By ruling out pathological behaviours, we are able to give simpler, direct proofs of the rank-rigidity and omnibus subgroup theorems for HHGs. Th…
We study infinite covolume discrete subgroups of higher rank semisimple Lie groups, motivated by understanding basic properties of Anosov subgroups from various viewpoints (geometric, coarse geometric and dynamical). The class of Anosov subgroups constitutes a natural generalization of convex cocompact subgroups of rank one Lie groups to higher rank. Our main goal is to give several new equivalent characterizations for this important class of discrete subgroups. Our characterizations capture "rank one behavior" of Anosov subgroups and are direct generalizations of rank one equivalents to conve…
Consider unbounded reduced Abelian p-groups (p > 2) A and A'. In this paper, we prove that if the automorphism groups Aut A and Aut A' are elementary equivalent then the groups A and A' are equivalent in the second order logic bounded by the final rank of the basic subgroups of A and A'.
We study Morse representations of discrete subgroups in higher rank semi-simple Lie groups defined by M. Kapovich, B. Leeb and J. Porti. We show that, if a sequence of Morse representations $ρ_n : Γ\rightarrow G$ is (strongly) unbounded in the character variety, the group must have a very particular structure.
We study the geometry and dynamics of discrete infinite covolume subgroups of higher rank semisimple Lie groups. We introduce and prove the equivalence of several conditions, capturing "rank one behavior'' of discrete subgroups of higher rank Lie groups. They are direct generalizations of rank one equivalents to convex cocompactness. We also prove that our notions are equivalent to the notion of Anosov subgroup, for which we provide a closely related, but simplified and more accessible reformulation, avoiding the geodesic flow of the group. We show moreover that the Anosov condition can be rel…
This is the geometric part of two papers on the cohomology of Kaehler groups. Using non-Abelian Hodge theory we show that if a finitely presented group with an unbounded complex linear morphism is the fundamental group of a compact Kaehler manifold then its second or its fourth Betti number does not vanish. Combined with our first paper this shows that a cocompact lattice in a real simple Lie group G of sufficiently large real rank is Kaehler if and only if G is of Hermitian type (a conjecture of Carlson and Toledo).
Given a product X of locally compact rank one Hadamard spaces, we study asymptotic properties of certain discrete isometry groups. First we give a detailed description of the structure of the geometric limit set and relate it to the limit cone; moreover, we show that the action of the group on a quotient of the regular geometric boundary of X is minimal and proximal. This is completely analogous to the case of Zariski dense discrete subgroups of semi-simple Lie groups acting on the associated symmetric space. In the second part of the paper we study the distribution of orbit points in X: As a …
The rank of a hierarchically hyperbolic space is the maximal number of unbounded factors in a standard product region. For hierarchically hyperbolic groups, this coincides with the maximal dimension of a quasiflat. Examples for which the rank coincides with familiar quantities include: the dimension of maximal Dehn twist flats for mapping class groups, the maximal rank of a free abelian subgroup for right-angled Coxeter and Artin groups, and, for the Weil--Petersson metric, the rank is the integer part of half the complex dimension of Teichmüller space. We prove that any quasiflat of dimension…
