We present new infinite families of expander graphs of vertex degree 4, which is the minimal possible degree for Cayley graph expanders. Our first family defines a tower of coverings (with covering indices equals 2) and our second family is given as Cayley graphs of finite groups with very short presentations with only 2 generators and 4 relations. Both families are based on particular finite quotients of a group G of infinite upper triangular matrices over the ring M(3,F2).
We present explicit vector space bases for the finite abelian quotients of the lower exponent-2 groups of G by upper triangular subgroups and prove a particular 3-periodicity of these quotients.
The pro-2 completion of the group G satisfies the Golod-Shafarevich inequality $|R| \geq (|X|^2)/4$, it is infinite, not p-adic analytic, contains a free nonabelian subgroup, but not a free pro-p group. We also conjecture that the group G has finite width 3 and finite average width 8/3.
We prove that there exist $k\in N$ and $0<ε\in R$ such that every non-abelian finite simple group $G$, which is not a Suzuki group, has a set of $k$ generators for which the Cayley graph $\Cay(G; S)$ is an $ε$-expander.
We show that pairs of generators for the family Sz(q) of Suzuki groups may be selected so that the corresponding Cayley graphs are expanders. By combining this with several deep works of Kassabov, Lubotzky and Nikolov, this establishes that the family of all non-abelian finite simple groups can be made into expanders in a uniform fashion.
We construct an explicit generating sets $F_n$ and $\tilde F_n$ of the alternating and the symmetric groups, which make the Cayley graphs $C(Alt(n), F_n)$ and $C(Sym(n), \tilde F_n)$ a family of bounded degree expanders for all sufficiently large $n$. These expanders have many applications in the theory of random walks on groups and other areas of mathematics.
Let G be a finitely presented group, and let {G_i} be a collection of finite index normal subgroups that is closed under intersections. Then, we prove that at least one of the following must hold: 1. G_i is an amalgamated free product or HNN extension, for infinitely many i; 2. the Cayley graphs of G/G_i (with respect to a fixed finite set of generators for G) form an expanding family; 3. inf_i (d(G_i)-1)/[G:G_i] = 0, where d(G_i) is the rank of G_i. The proof involves an analysis of the geometry and topology of finite Cayley graphs. Several applications of this result are given.
We provide an explicit construction of finite 4-regular graphs $(Γ_k)_{k\in \mathbb N}$ with ${girth Γ_k\to\infty}$ as $k\to\infty$ and $\frac{diam Γ_k}{girth Γ_k}\leqslant D$ for some $D>0$ and all $k\in\mathbb{N}$. For each fixed dimension $n\geqslant 2,$ we find a pair of matrices in $SL_{n}(\mathbb{Z})$ such that (i) they generate a free subgroup, (ii)~their reductions $\bmod\, p$ generate $SL_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{p})$ for all sufficiently large primes $p$, (iii) the corresponding Cayley graphs of $SL_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{p})$ have girth at least $c_n\log p$ for some $c_n>0$. Relying on growth resul…
We construct explicit generating sets S_n and \tilde S_n of the for the alternating and the symmetric groups, which turn the Cayley graphs C(Alt(n), S_n) and C(Sym(n), \tilde S_n) into a family of bounded degree expanders for all n. This answers affirmatively an old question which has been asked many times in the literature. These expanders have many applications in the theory of random walks on groups, card shuffling and other areas.
We prove a general large sieve statement in the context of random walks on subgraphs of a given graph. This can be seen as a generalization of previously known results where one performs a random walk on a group enjoying a strong spectral gap property. In such a context the point is to exhibit a strong uniform expansion property for a suitable family of Cayley graphs on quotients. In our combinatorial approach, this is replaced by a result of Alon--Roichman about expanding properties of random Cayley graphs. Applying the general setting we show e.g., that with high probability (in a strong exp…
We study the representations of non-commutative universal lattices and use them to compute lower bounds for the \TauC for the commutative universal lattices $G_{d,k}= \SL_d(\Z[x_1,...,x_k])$ with respect to several generating sets. As an application of the above result we show that the Cayley graphs of the finite groups $\SL_{3k}(\F_p)$ can be made expanders using suitable choice of the generators. This provides the first examples of expander families of groups of Lie type where the rank is not bounded and gives a natural (and explicit) counter examples to two conjectures of Alex Lubotzky and …
We show that every regular graph with good local expansion has a spanning Lipschitz subgraph with large girth and minimum degree. In particular, this gives a finite analogue of the dynamical solution to the von Neumann problem by Gaboriau and Lyons. We give a new proof and strengthen the Gaboriau-Lyons result, that allows us to answer two questions of Monod about geometric random subgroups. Our finite theorems are kind of converse to the theorem of Bourgain and Gamburd showing that large girth implies expansion for Cayley graphs of SL_2(F_p). We apply these to the regular case of Thomassen's c…
We show that for integers k > 1 and n > 2, the diameter of the Cayley graph of SL_n(Z/kZ) associated to a standard two-element generating set, is at most a constant times n^2 ln k. This answers a question of A. Lubotzky concerning SL_n(F_p) and is unexpected because these Cayley graphs do not form an expander family. Our proof amounts to a quick algorithm for finding short words representing elements of SL_n(Z/kZ).
Let $G$ be a finite group. It was remarked by Breuillard-Green-Guralnick-Tao that if the Cayley graph $C(G,S)$ is an expander graph and is non-bipartite then the spectrum of the adjacency operator $T$ is bounded away from $-1$. In this article we are interested in explicit bounds for the spectrum of these graphs. Specifically, we show that the non-trivial spectrum of the adjacency operator lies in the interval $\left[-1+\frac{h(\mathbb{G})^{4}}γ, 1-\frac{h(\mathbb{G})^{2}}{2d^{2}}\right]$, where $h(\mathbb{G})$ denotes the (vertex) Cheeger constant of the $d$ regular graph $C(G,S)$ with respec…
In this paper, the first of a series of two, we continue the study of higher index theory for expanders. We prove that if a sequence of graphs is an expander and the girth of the graphs tends to infinity, then the coarse Baum-Connes assembly map is injective, but not surjective, for the associated metric space $X$. Expanders with this girth property are a necessary ingredient in the construction of the so-called `Gromov monster' groups that (coarsely) contain expanders in their Cayley graphs. We use this connection to show that the Baum-Connes assembly map with certain coefficients is injectiv…
Does every $n$-vertex Cayley graph have an orthonormal eigenbasis all of whose coordinates are $O(1/\sqrt{n})$? While the answer is yes for abelian groups, we show that it is no in general. On the other hand, we show that every $n$-vertex Cayley graph (and more generally, vertex-transitive graph) has an orthonormal basis whose coordinates are all $O(\sqrt{\log n / n})$, and that this bound is nearly best possible. Our investigation is motivated by a question of Assaf Naor, who proved that random abelian Cayley graphs are small-set expanders, extending a classic result of Alon--Roichman. His pr…
We exhibit a finitely generated group $G$ and a sequence of finite index normal subgroups $N_n\trianglelefteq G$ such that for every finite generating subset $S\subseteq G$, the sequence of finite Cayley graphs $(G/N_n, S)$ does not coarsely embed into any $L^p$-space for $1\leqslant p<\infty$ (moreover, into any uniformly curved Banach space), and yet admits no weakly embedded expander. The reason why our examples do not coarsely embed is a new phenomenon called relative expansion, which we define in terms of Poincaré inequalities.
In this note we show that the family of Cayley graphs of a finitely generated subgroup of ${\rm GL}_{n_0}(\mathbb{F}_p(t))$ modulo some admissible square-free polynomials is a family of expanders under certain algebraic conditions. Here is a more precise formulation of our main result. For a positive integer $c_0$, we say a square-free polynomial is $c_0$-admissible if degree of irreducible factors of $f$ are distinct integers with prime factors at least $c_0$. Suppose $Ω$ is a finite symmetric subset of ${\rm GL}_{n_0}(\mathbb{F}_p(t))$, where $p$ is a prime more than $5$. Let $Γ$ be the grou…
Let the group $G$ act transitively on the finite set $Ω$, and let $S \subseteq G$ be closed under taking inverses. The Schreier graph $Sch(G \circlearrowleft Ω,S)$ is the graph with vertex set $Ω$ and edge set $\{ (ω,ω^s) : ω\in Ω, s \in S \}$. In this paper, we show that random Schreier graphs on $C \log|Ω|$ elements exhibit a (two-sided) spectral gap with high probability, magnifying a well known theorem of Alon and Roichman for Cayley graphs. On the other hand, depending on the particular action of $G$ on $Ω$, we give a lower bound on the number of elements which are necessary to provide a …
For n at least 2, the concept of n-way expanders was defined by various researchers. Bigger n gives a weaker notion in general, and 2-way expanders coincide with expanders in usual sense. Koji Fujiwara asked whether these concepts are equivalent to that of ordinary expanders for all n for a sequence of Cayley graphs. In this paper, we answer his question in the affirmative. Furthermore, we obtain universal inequalities on multi-way isoperimetric constants on any finite connected vertex-transitive graph, and show that gaps between these constants imply the imprimitivity of the group action on t…
Let $G$ be a finite group and $S$ be a symmetric generating set of $G$ with $|S| = d$. We show that if the undirected Cayley sum graph $C_Σ(G,S)$ is an expander graph and is non-bipartite, then the spectrum of its normalised adjacency operator is bounded away from $-1$. We also establish an explicit lower bound for the spectrum of these graphs, namely, the non-trivial eigenvalues of the normalised adjacency operator lies in the interval $\left(-1+\frac{h(G)^{4}}η, 1-\frac{h(G)^{2}}{2d^{2}}\right]$, where $h(G)$ denotes the (vertex) Cheeger constant of the $d$-regular graph $C_Σ(G,S)$ and $η= 2…
We prove Bowen's conjecture that every sequence of finite graphs that locally converges to the Cayley graph of a countably infinite group with Kazhdan Property (T) is essentially a vertex-disjoint union of expander graphs. We characterize graph sequences that are essentially a vertex-disjoint union of expander graphs in terms of the Markov operator.
In this series of papers, we study correspondence between the following: (1) large scale structure of the metric space bigsqcup_m {Cay(G(m))} consisting of Cayley graphs of finite groups with k generators; (2) structure of groups which appear in the boundary of the set {G(m)}_m in the space of k-marked groups. In this third part of the series, we show the correspondence among the metric properties `geometric property (T),' `cohomological property (T),' and the group property `Kazhdan's property (T).' Geometric property (T) of Willett--Yu is stronger than being expander graphs. Cohomological pr…
We show that random Cayley graphs of finite simple (or semisimple) groups of Lie type of fixed rank are expanders. The proofs are based on the Bourgain-Gamburd method and on the main result of our companion paper, establishing strongly dense subgroups in simple algebraic groups.
We construct small cancellation labellings for some infinite sequences of finite graphs of bounded degree. We use them to define infinite graphical small cancellation presentations of groups. This technique allows us to provide examples of groups with exotic properties: - We construct the first examples of finitely generated coarsely non-amenable groups (that is, groups without Guoliang Yu's Property A) that are coarsely embeddable into a Hilbert space. Moreover, our groups act properly on CAT(0) cubical complexes. - We construct the first examples of finitely generated groups, with expanders …
We prove that if L is a finite simple group of Lie type and A a symmetric set of generators of L, then A grows i.e |AAA| > |A|^(1+epsilon) where epsilon depends only on the Lie rank of L, or AAA=L. This implies that for a family of simple groups L of Lie type the diameter of any Cayley graph is polylogarithmic in |L|. Combining our result on growth with known results of Bourgain,Gamburd and Varjú it follows that if LAMBDA is a Zariski-dense subgroup of SL(d,Z) generated by a finite symmetric set S, then for square-free moduli m which are relatively prime to some number m_0 the Cayley graphs Ga…

We prove that if L is a finite simple group of Lie type and A a symmetric set of generators of L, then A grows i.e |AAA| > |A|^{1+epsilon} where epsilon depends only on the Lie rank of L, or AAA=L. This implies that for a family of simple groups L of Lie type of bounded rank the diameter of any Cayley graph is polylogarithmic in |L|. We obtain a similar bound for the diameters of all Cayley graphs of perfect subgroups of GL(n,p) generated by their elements of order p. We also obtain some new families of expanders. We also prove the following partial extension. Let G be a subgroup of GL(n,p), p…
The total-variation cutoff phenomenon has been conjectured to hold for simple random walk on all transitive expanders. However, very little is actually known regarding this conjecture, and cutoff on sparse graphs in general. In this paper we establish total-variation cutoff for simple random walk on Ramanujan complexes of type $\widetilde{A}_{d}$ $(d\geq1)$. As a result, we obtain explicit generators for the finite classical groups $\mathrm{PGL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$ for which the associated Cayley graphs exhibit total-variation cutoff.
The open question of what prevents a metric space with bounded geometry from being uniformly embeddable in Hilbert space is answered here for box spaces of residually finite groups. We prove that a box space does not contain a uniformly embedded expander sequence if and only if it uniformly embeds in Hilbert space. In particular, this gives a sufficient condition for a residually finite group to have the Haagerup property. The main result holds in the more general setting of a disjoint union of Cayley graphs of finite groups with bounded degree.
In the first, mostly expository, part of this paper, a graded Lie algebra is associated to every group G given with an N-series of subgroups. The asymptotics of the Poincare series of this algebra give estimates on the growth of the group G. This establishes the existence of a gap between polynomial growth and growth of type $e^{\sqrt n}$ in the class of residually-p groups, and gives examples of finitely generated p-groups of uniformly exponential growth. In the second part, we produce two examples of groups of finite width and describe their Lie algebras, introducing a notion of Cayley graph…
Let Ga be a subgroup of GL_d(Q) generated by a finite symmetric set S. For an integer q, denote by Ga_q the subgroup of Ga consisting of the elements that project to the unit element mod q. We prove that the Cayley graphs of Ga/Ga_q with respect to the generating set S form a family of expanders when q ranges over square-free integers with large prime divisors if and only if the connected component of the Zariski-closure of Ga is perfect.
Twin-width is a recently introduced graph parameter with applications in algorithmics, combinatorics, and finite model theory. For graphs of bounded degree, finiteness of twin-width is preserved by quasi-isometry. Thus, through Cayley graphs, it defines a group invariant. We prove that groups which are abelian, hyperbolic, ordered, solvable, or with polynomial growth, have finite twin-width. Twin-width can be characterised by excluding patterns in the self-action by product of the group elements. Based on this characterisation, we propose a strengthening called uniform twin-width, which is sta…
We establish three criteria of hyperbolicity of a graph in terms of ``average width of geodesic bigons''. In particular we prove that if the ratio of the Van Kampen area of a geodesic bigon $β$ and the length of $β$ in the Cayley graph of a finitely presented group $G$ is bounded above then $G$ is hyperbolic. We plan to use these results to characterize hyperbolic groups in terms of random walks.
Let $G$ be a finite group acting transitively on a set $Ω$. We study what it means for this action to be {\it quasirandom}, thereby generalizing Gowers' study of quasirandomness in groups. We connect this notion of quasirandomness to an upper bound for the convolution of functions associated with the action of $G$ on $Ω$. This convolution bound allows us to give sufficient conditions such that sets $S,T\subset G$ and $Γ\subseteq Ω$ contain elements $s\in S, t\in T, γ\inΓ$ such that $s(γ)=t$. Other consequences include an analogue of `the Gowers trick' of Nikolov and Pyber for general group act…
Let Gamma be a connected, locally finite graph of finite tree width and G be a group acting on it with finitely many orbits and finite node stabilizers. We provide an elementary and direct construction of a tree T on which G acts with finitely many orbits and finite vertex stabilizers. Moreover, the tree is defined directly in terms of the structure tree of optimally nested cuts of Gamma. Once the tree is constructed, standard Bass-Serre theory yields that G is virtually free. This approach simplifies the existing proofs for the fundamental result of Muller and Schupp that characterizes contex…
The problems of square root from group element existing in $SL_2(F_p)$, $PSL_2(F_p)$ and $GL_2(F_p)$ were solved. The similar goal of root finding was reached in the GM algorithm adjoining an $n$-th root of a generator results in a discrete group for group $PSL(2,R)$, but we consider this question over finite field $F_p$. Well known the Cayley-Hamilton method \cite{Pell} for computing the square roots of the matrix $M^n$ can give answer of square roots existing over finite field only after computation of $det M^n$ and some real Pell-Lucas numbers by using Bine formula. Over method gives answer…
