This is a note on the classical Waring's problem for several homogeneous forms. For positive integers (n,d,r,s), fix a general r-dimensional subspace of degree d forms in n+1 variables. We describe the family of s-sided polar polyhedra of this subspace in many specific cases.
Apolarity is an important tool in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry which studies a form, $f$, by the action of polynomial differential operators on $f$. The quotient of all polynomial differential operators by those which annihilate $f$ is called the apolar algebra of $f$. In general, the apolar algebra of a form is useful for determining its Waring rank, which can be seen as the problem of decomposing the supersymmetric tensor, associated to the form, minimally as a sum of rank one supersymmetric tensors. In this article we study the apolar algebra of a product of linear forms, whic…
We investigate the variety of commuting matrices. We classify its components for any number of matrices of size at most 7. We prove that starting from quadruples of size 8 matrices, this scheme has generically nonreduced components, while up to degree 7 it is generically reduced. Our approach is to recast the problem as deformations of modules and generalize an array of methods: apolarity, duality and Białynicki-Birula decompositions to this setup. We include a thorough review of our methods to make the paper self-contained and accessible to both algebraic and linear-algebraic communities. Our…
We extend the $\hat U$-theorem for projective varieties proved in arXiv:1601.00340 and arXiv:1607.04181 to projective schemes over $\mathbb C$. The condition "ss=s" required in arXiv:1601.00340 and arXiv:1607.04181 is reformulated algebraically for our setting. We also describe a blowing up for the condition "ss=s". Different from the sequence of blowing ups in arXiv:1607.04181 , we can get "ss=s" in one blowing up.
Let $C$ be a complex projective smooth curve and $W$ a symplectic vector bundle of rank $2n$ over $C$. The Lagrangian Quot scheme $LQ_{-e}(W)$ parameterizes subsheaves of rank $n$ and degree $-e$ which are isotropic with respect to the symplectic form. We prove that $LQ_{-e}(W)$ is irreducible and generically smooth of the expected dimension for all large $e$, and that a generic element is saturated and stable.
We study the degrees of generators of the ideal of a projected Veronese variety $v_2(\mathbb{P}^3)\subset \mathbb{P}^9$ to $\mathbb{P}^6$ depending on the center of projection. This is related to the geometry of zero dimensional schemes of length $8$ in $\mathbb{A}^4$, Cremona transforms of $\mathbb{P}^6$, and the geometry of Tonoli Calabi-Yau threefolds of degree $17$ in $\mathbb{P}^6$.
Given a locally free coherent sheaf on a smooth algebraic surface, we consider the Quot-scheme parametrizing zero-dimensional quotients of the sheaf and find the corresponding motivic class in the Grothendieck ring of algebraic varieties.
Consider the abelian category ${\mathcal C}$ of commutative group schemes of finite type over a field $k$, its full subcategory ${\mathcal F}$ of finite group schemes, and the associated pro category ${\rm Pro}({\mathcal C})$ (resp. ${\rm Pro}({\mathcal F})$) of pro-algebraic (resp. profinite) group schemes. When $k$ is perfect, we show that the profinite fundamental group $\varpi_1 : {\rm Pro}({\mathcal C}) \to {\rm Pro}({\mathcal F})$ is left exact and commutes with base change under algebraic field extensions; as a consequence, the higher profinite homotopy functors $\varpi_i$ vanish for $i…
Given two algebraic groups $G$, $H$ over a field $k$, we investigate the representability of the functor of morphisms (of schemes) $\mathbf{Hom}(G,H)$ and the subfunctor of homomorphisms (of algebraic groups) $\mathbf{Hom}_{\rm gp}(G,H)$. We show that $\mathbf{Hom}(G,H)$ is represented by a group scheme, locally of finite type, if the $k$-vector space $\mathcal{O}(G)$ is finite-dimensional; the converse holds if $H$ is not étale. When $G$ is linearly reductive and $H$ is smooth, we show that $\mathbf{Hom}_{\rm gp}(G,H)$ is represented by a smooth scheme $M$; moreover, every orbit of $H$ acting…
Given a reductive group scheme $G$, we give a linear algebraic description of reduced étale $4$-cocycles on its classifying stack $\mathrm B(G)$. These cocycles form a $2$-groupoid, which we interpret as parameters of metaplectic covers of $G$. We use our linear algebraic description to define the Langlands dual of a metaplectic cover.
We show that every algebraic group scheme over a field with at least 8 elements can be realized as the group of automorphisms of a nonassociative algebra. This is only a modest improvement of the theorem of Gordeev and Popov (2003), but it allows us to give a new characterization of algebraic Lie algebras and to simplify the standard descriptions of Mumford--Tate domains and Shimura varieties as moduli spaces. Once the original argument of Gordeev and Popov has been rewritten in the language of schemes, we find that it also applies to algebraic groups over discrete valuation rings.
This is a sequel to our previous paper of oriented bivariant theory [14]. In 2001 M. Levine and F. Morel constructed algebraic cobordism $Ω_*(X)$ for schemes $X$ over a field $k$ in an abstract way and later M. Levine and R. Pandhairpande reconstructed it more geometrically. In this paper in a similar manner we construct an algebraic cobordism $Ω^*(X \xrightarrow {π_X} S)$ for a scheme $X$ over a fixed scheme $S$ in such a way that if the target scheme $S$ is the point $pt = \operatorname{Spec} k$, then $Ω^{-i}(X \xrightarrow {π_X} pt)$ is isomorphic to Levine-Morel's algebraic cobordism $Ω_i(…
We study the algebraic $K$-theory and Grothendieck-Witt theory of proto-exact categories of vector bundles over monoid schemes. Our main results are the complete description of the algebraic $K$-theory space of an integral monoid scheme $X$ in terms of its Picard group $\operatorname{Pic}(X)$ and pointed monoid of regular functions $Γ(X, \mathcal{O}_X)$ and a description of the Grothendieck-Witt space of $X$ in terms of an additional involution on $\operatorname{Pic}(X)$. We also prove space-level projective bundle formulae in both settings.
We give criteria for certain morphisms from an algebraic stack to a (not necessarily algebraic) stack to admit an (appropriately defined) scheme-theoretic image. We apply our criteria to show that certain natural moduli stacks of local Galois representations are algebraic (or Ind-algebraic) stacks.
Let $X$ be a Noetherian separated and finite dimensional scheme over a field $\mathbb{K}$ of characteristic zero. The goal of this paper is to study deformations of $X$ over a differential graded local Artin $\mathbb{K}$-algebra by using local Tate-Quillen resolutions, i.e., the algebraic analog of the Palamodov's resolvent of a complex space. The above goal is achieved by describing the DG-Lie algebra controlling deformation theory of a diagram of differential graded commutative algebras, indexed by a direct Reedy category.
