The aim of this work is to provide a construction of generalized local symbols on algebraic curves as morphisms of group schemes. From a closed point of a complete, irreducible and non-singular curve $C$ over a perfect field $k$ as the only data, using theta groups over Picard schemes of curves, we offer a geometric construction that allows us to define generalizations of the tame symbol and the Hilbert norm residue symbol.
This paper presents a proof of reciprocity laws for the Parshin symbol and for two new local symbols, defined here, which we call 4-function local symbols. The reciprocity laws for the Parshin symbol are proven using a new method - via iterated integrals. The usefulness of this method is shown by two facts - first, by establishing new local symbols - the 4-function local symbols and their reciprocity laws and, second, by providing refinements of the Parshin symbol in terms of bi-local symbols, each of which satisfies a reciprocity law. The K-theoretic variant of the first 4-function local symb…
An enhancement of the dynamic geometry system GeoGebra for the automatic symbolic computation of algebraic loci and envelopes is presented. Given a GeoGebra construction, the prototype, after rewriting the construction as a polynomial system in terms of variables and parameters, uses an implementation of the recent GröbnerCover algorithm to obtain the algebraic description of the sought locus/envelope as a locally closed set. The prototype shows the applicability of these techniques in general purpose dynamic geometry systems.
We introduce a variant of the birational symbols group of Kontsevich, Pestun, and the second author, and use this to define birational invariants of algebraic orbifolds.
We introduce a new approach to the study of a system of algebraic equations in the algebraic torus whose Newton polytopes have sufficiently general relative positions. Our method is based on the theory of Parshin's residues and tame symbols on toroidal varieties. It provides a uniform algebraic explanation of the recent result of Khovanskii on the product of the roots of such systems and the Gel'fond--Khovanskii result on the sum of the values of a Laurent polynomial over the roots of such systems, and extends them to the case of an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic.
Tate gave a famous construction of the residue symbol on curves by using some non-commutative operator algebra in the context of algebraic geometry. We explain Beilinson's multidimensional generalization, which is not so well-documented in the literature. We provide a new approach using Hochschild homology.
Real algebraic geometry adapts the methods and ideas from (complex) algebraic geometry to study the real solutions to systems of polynomial equations and polynomial inequalities. As it is the real solutions to such systems modeling geometric constraints that are physically meaningful, real algebraic geometry is a core mathematical input for geometric constraint systems.
Let $G$ be a group and let $X$ be an algebraic variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic zero. Denote $A=X(k)$ the set of rational points of $X$. We investigate invertible algebraic cellular automata $τ\colon A^G \to A^G$ whose local defining map is induced by some morphism of algebraic varieties $X^M \to X$ where $M$ is a finite memory. When $G$ is locally embeddable into finite groups (LEF), then we show that the inverses of reversible algebraic cellular automata are automatically algebraic cellular automata. Generalizations are also obtained for finite product Hopfian…
Let $G$ be an amenable group and let $X$ be an irreducible complete algebraic variety over an algebraically closed field $K$. Let $A$ denote the set of $K$-points of $X$ and let $τ\colon A^G \to A^G$ be an algebraic cellular automaton over $(G,X,K)$, that is, a cellular automaton over the group $G$ and the alphabet $A$ whose local defining map is induced by a morphism of $K$-algebraic varieties. We introduce a weak notion of pre-injectivity for algebraic cellular automata, namely $(*)$-pre-injectivity, and prove that $τ$ is surjective if and only if it is $(*)$-pre-injective. In particular, $τ…
We present a novel certified and complete algorithm to compute arrangements of real planar algebraic curves. It provides a geometric-topological analysis of the decomposition of the plane induced by a finite number of algebraic curves in terms of a cylindrical algebraic decomposition. From a high-level perspective, the overall method splits into two main subroutines, namely an algorithm denoted Bisolve to isolate the real solutions of a zero-dimensional bivariate system, and an algorithm denoted GeoTop to analyze a single algebraic curve. Compared to existing approaches based on elimination te…
We consider an algebraic surface. For an irreducible curve on this surface and for a point on this curve one can associate an artinian ring, which is a sum of two-dimensional local fields. An example of two-dimensional local field is iterated Laurent series. We consider an integer value symbol on a two-dimensional local field. This symbol appears for the description of non-ramified coverings of two-dimensional local fields and for the description of intersection index of divisors on surfaces by adeles. We interpret this symbol as the commutator of lifting of elements in the central extension o…
On an algebraic curve there are Tate symbols, which satisfy Weil reciprocity law. The analogues in higher dimensions are the Parshin symbols, which satisfy Kato-Parshin reciprocity laws. We give a refinement of the Parshin symbol for surfaces, using iterated integrals in the sense of Chen. The product of the refined symbol over the cyclic permutations of the functions recovers the Parshin symbol. Also, we construct a logarithmic version of the Parshin symbol. We prove reciprocity laws for both the refined symbol and a logarithm of the Parshin symbol.
Let $G$ be a group. Let $X$ be an algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $K$. Denote by $A=X(K)$ the set of rational points of $X$. We study algebraic group cellular automata $τ\colon A^G \to A^G$ whose local defining map is induced by a homomorphism of algebraic groups $X^M \to X$ where $M$ is a finite memory. When $G$ is sofic and $K$ is uncountable, we show that if $τ$ is post-surjective then it is weakly pre-injective. Our result extends the dual version of Gottschalk's Conjecture for finite alphabets proposed by Capobianco, Kari, and Taati. When $G$ is amenable, we prove that …
A code over a finite alphabet is called locally recoverable (LRC code) if every symbol in the encoding is a function of a small number (at most r) other symbols. A family of linear LRC codes that generalize the classic construction of Reed-Solomon codes was constructed in a recent paper by I. Tamo and A. Barg. In this paper we extend this construction to codes on algebraic curves. We give a general construction of LRC codes on curves and compute some examples, including asymptotically good families of codes derived from the Garcia- Stichtenoth towers. The local recovery procedure is performed …
We obtain a global resolution for the sheaf of differential operators on smooth geometric quotients of free linear actions of algebraic groups. The terms of our resolution involve symmetric and alternating powers of vector bundles easily constructed geometrically from the algebraic group and the vector space on which it acts.
This paper reveals some new analytical and geometrical properties of the generalized algebraic multiplicity, $χ$, introduced in [7, 5] and further developed in [20, 23, 24]. In particular, it establishes a completely new connection between $χ$ and the concept of local intersection index of algebraic varieties, a central device in Algebraic Geometry. This link between Nonlinear Spectral Theory and Algebraic Geometry provides to $χ$ with a deep geometrical meaning. Moreover, $χ$ is characterized through the new notion of local determinant of the Schur operator associated to the linear path, $\ma…
We show that the image of a subshift $X$ under various injective morphisms of symbolic algebraic varieties over monoid universes with algebraic variety alphabets is a subshift of finite type, resp. a sofic subshift, if and only if so is $X$. Similarly, let $G$ be a countable monoid and let $A$, $B$ be Artinian modules over a ring. We prove that for every closed subshift submodule $Σ\subset A^G$ and every injective $G$-equivariant uniformly continuous module homomorphism $τ\colon Σ\to B^G$, a subshift $Δ\subset Σ$ is of finite type, resp. sofic, if and only if so is the image $τ(Δ)$. Generaliza…
We give a construction of the two-dimensional tame symbol as the commutator of a group-like monoidal groupoid which is obtained from some group of k-linear operators acting in a two-dimensional local field and corresponds to some third cohomology class of this group. We give also the hypothetical method for the proof of the two-dimensional Parshin reciprocity laws. This text was written in 2003 as preprint 03-13 of the Humboldt University of Berlin and was available at http://edoc.hu-berlin.de/docviews/abstract.php?id=26204 (only evident misprints are corrected now). We prove that the higher-dimensional Contou-Carrère symbol is invariant under continuous automorphisms of algebras of iterated Laurent series over a ring. Applying this property, we obtain a new explicit formula for the higher-dimensional Contou-Carrère symbol. Unlike previously known formulas, this formula is given over an arbitrary ring, not necessarily a $\mathbb Q$-algebra, and does not involve algebraic $K$-theory.
In this paper we give a simpler proof of a deep theorem proved by Pellikan, Shen and van Wee that all linear codes are weakly algebraic-geometric using a theorem of B.Poonen.
We investigate the geometry of the support of small weight codewords of dual algebraic geometric codes on smooth complete intersections by applying the powerful tools recently developed by Alain Couvreur. In particular, by restricting ourselves to the case of Hermitian codes, we recover and extend previous results obtained by the second named author joint with Marco Pellegrini and Massimiliano Sala.
We generalize the theory of Contou-Carrère symbols to higher dimensions. To an $(n+1)$-tuple $f_0,\dots,f_n \in A((t_1))\cdots((t_n))^{\times}$, where $A$ denotes a commutative algebra over a field $k$, we associate an element $(f_0,\dots,f_n) \in A^{\times}$, compatible with the higher tame symbol for $k = A$, and earlier constructions for $n = 1$, by Contou-Carrère, and $n = 2$ by Osipov--Zhu. Our definition is based on the notion of \emph{higher commutators} for central extensions of groups by spectra, thereby extending the approach of Arbarello--de Concini--Kac and Anderson--Pablos Romo.
