A 3-manifold is Haken if it contains a topologically essential surface. The Virtual Haken Conjecture posits that every irreducible 3-manifold with infinite fundamental group has a finite cover which is Haken. In this paper, we study random 3-manifolds and their finite covers in an attempt to shed light on this difficult question. In particular, we consider random Heegaard splittings by gluing two handlebodies by the result of a random walk in the mapping class group of a surface. For this model of random 3-manifold, we are able to compute the probabilities that the resulting manifolds have finite covers of particular kinds. Our results contrast with the analogous probabilities for groups coming from random balanced presentations, giving quantitative theorems to the effect that 3-manifold groups have many more finite quotients than random groups. The next natural question is whether these covers have positive betti number. For abelian covers of a fixed type over 3-manifolds of Heegaard genus 2, we show that the probability of positive betti number is 0.
In fact, many of these questions boil down to questions about the mapping class group. We are lead to consider the action of mapping class group of a surface S on the set of quotients pi_1(S) -> Q. If Q is a simple group, we show that if the genus of S is large, then this action is very mixing. In particular, the action factors through the alternating group of each orbit. This is analogous to Goldman's theorem that the action of the mapping class group on the SU(2) character variety is ergodic.
A foliation of a manifold M is called R-covered if its lift to the universal cover of M has space of leaves R. We show that there are many graph manifolds which admit taut foliations, but which do not admit any R-covered foliations. On the other hand, we show that these manifolds all have finite covers admitting R-covered foliations.
By a construction of Berstein and Edmonds every proper branched cover f between manifolds is a factor of a branched covering orbit map from a locally connected and locally compact Hausdorff space called the monodromy space of f to the target manifold. For proper branched covers between 2-manifolds the monodromy space is known to be a manifold. We show that this does not generalize to dimension 3 by constructing a self-map of the 3-sphere for which the monodromy space is not a locally contractible space.
This paper concerns the class of contractible open 3-manifolds which are ``locally finite strong end sums'' of eventually end-irreducible Whitehead manifolds. It is shown that whenever a 3-manifold in this class is a covering space of another 3-manifold the group of covering translations must be a free group. It follows that such a 3-manifold cannot cover a closed 3-manifold. For each countable free group a specific uncountable family of irreducible open 3-manifolds is constructed whose fundamental groups are isomorphic to the given group and whose universal covering spaces are in this class a…
We define the class of Haken $n$--manifolds as a generalisation of Haken 3--manifolds. We prove that the interior of the universal covering of a Haken $n$--manifold is $\RR^n$, which generalises a result of Waldhausen. The techniques used allow us to provide a new proof of Waldhausen's universal cover theorem for Haken 3--manifolds.
This paper uses Brin and Thickstun's theory of end reductions of non-compact 3-manifolds to study groups of covering translations of irreducible contractible open 3-manifolds W which are not homeomorphic to R^3. We associate to W an object S(W) called the simplicial complex of minimal R^2-irreducible end reductions of W. Whenever W covers another 3-manifold the group of covering translations is isomorphic to a fixed point free group of automorphisms of S(W). We apply this result to give uncountably many examples of R^2-irreducible such W which cover 3-manifolds with infinite cyclic fundamental…
To a rational homology sphere graph manifold one can associate a weighted tree invariant called splice diagram. It was shown earlier that the splice diagram determines the universal abelian cover of the manifold. We will in this article turn the proof of this in to an algorithm to explicitly construct the universal abelian cover from the splice diagram.
Suppose $M$ is a closed, connected, orientable, \irr\ \3m\ such that $G=π_1(M)$ is infinite. One consequence of Thurston's geometrization conjecture is that the universal covering space $\widetilde{M}$ of $M$ must be \homeo\ to $\RRR$. This has been verified directly under several different additional assumptions on $G$. (See, for example, \cite{2}, \cite{3}, \cite{6}, \cite{19}.)
The existence of essential closed surfaces surfaces is proven for finite coverings of 3-manifolds that are triangulated by finitely many topological ideal tetrahedra and admit a regular, negatively curved, ideal structure.
It was shown in my earlier article that the splice diagram of a rational homology sphere graph manifold determines the manifolds universal abelian cover. In this article we use the proof of this to give a condition on the splice diagram to determine when the universal abelian cover itself is a rational homology sphere.
Rafi and Schleimer recently proved that the natural relation between curve complexes induced by a covering map between two surfaces is a quasi-isometric embedding. We offer another proof of this result using a distance estimate via hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
We show that the infinite cyclic cover of the exterior of the untwisted Whitehead double of a non-trivial knot does not embed in any compact 3-manifold, answering a question of Jiang, Ni, Wang and Zhou.
We prove that for any closed, connected, oriented 3-manifold M, there exists an infinite family of 2-fold branched covers of M that are hyperbolic 3-manifolds and surface bundles over the circle with arbitrarily large volume.
It is proved by Sakuma and Brooks that any closed orientable $3$-manifold with a Heegaard splitting of genus $g$ admits a $2$-fold branched cover that is a hyperbolic $3$-manifold and a genus $g$ surface bundle over the circle. This paper concerns entropy of pseudo-Anosov monodromies for hyperbolic fibered $3$-manifolds. We prove that there exist infinitely many closed orientable $3$-manifolds $M$ such that the minimal entropy over all hyperbolic, genus $g$ surface bundles over the circle as $2$-fold branched covers of the $3$-manifold $M$ is comparable to $1/g$.
This paper gives a new proof of a result of Geoghegan and Mihalik which states that whenever a contractible open $n$-manifold $W$ which is not homeomorphic to $\mathbf{R}^n$ is a covering space of an $n$-manifold $M$ and either $n \geq 4$ or $n=3$ and $W$ is irreducible, then the group of covering translations injects into the homeotopy group of $W$.
This paper gives a proof that the universal cover of a closed 3-manifold built from three $π_1$-injective handlebodies is homeomorphic to $\mathbb R^3$. This construction is an extension to handlebodies of the conditions for gluing of three solid tori to produce non-Haken Seifert fibered manifolds with infinite fundamental group. This class of manifolds has been shown to contain non-Haken non-Seifert fibered manifolds.
Let $N$ be a prime 3-manifold that is not a closed graph manifold. Building on a result of Hongbin Sun and using a result of Asaf Hadari we show that for every $k\in\Bbb{N}$ there exists a finite cover $\tilde{N}$ of $N$ such that $|\operatorname{Tor} H_1(\tilde{N};\Bbb{Z})|>k$.
In this paper it is proven that if the group of covering translations of the covering space of a compact, connected, $P^2$-irreducible 3-manifold corresponding to a non-trivial, finitely-generated subgroup of its fundamental group is infinite, then either the covering space is almost compact or the subgroup is infinite cyclic and has normalizer a non-finitely-generated subgroup of the rational numbers. In the first case additional information is obtained which is then used to relate Thurston's hyperbolization and virtual bundle conjectures to some algebraic conjectures about certain 3-manifold…
Given a closed oriented PL four-manifold $X$ and a closed surface $B$ embedded in $X$ with isolated cone singularities, we give a formula for the signature of an irregular dihedral cover of $X$ branched along $B$. For $X$ simply-connected, we deduce a necessary condition on the intersection form of a simply-connected irregular dihedral branched cover of $(X, B)$. When the singularities on $B$ are two-bridge slice, we prove that the necessary condition on the intersection form of the cover is sharp. For $X$ a simply-connected PL four-manifold with non-zero second Betti number, we construct infi…
We study the homology of Riemannian manifolds of finite volume that are covered by an $r$-fold product $(\mathbb{H}^2)^r = \mathbb{H}^2 \times \ldots \times \mathbb{H}^2$ of hyperbolic planes. Using a variation of a method developed by Avramidi and Nguyen-Phan, we show that any such manifold $M$ possesses, up to finite coverings, an arbitrarily large number of compact oriented flat totally geodesic $r$-dimensional submanifolds whose fundamental classes are linearly independent in the homology group $H_r(M;\mathbb{Z})$.
An irreducible open 3-manifold $W$ is {\bf R}$^2$-irreducible if every proper plane in $W$ splits off a halfspace. In this paper it is shown that if such a $W$ is the universal cover of a connected, {\bf P}$^2$-irreducible open 3-manifold $M$ with finitely generated fundamental group, then either $W$ is homeomorphic to {\bf R}$^3$ or the group is a free product of infinite cyclic groups and infinite closed surface groups. Given any such finitely generated group uncountably many $M$ are constructed with that fundamental group such that their universal covers are {\bf R}$^2$-irreducible, are not…
Consider a dihedral cover $f: Y\to X$ with $X$ and $Y$ four-manifolds and $f$ branched along an oriented surface embedded in $X$ with isolated cone singularities. We prove that only a slice knot can arise as the unique singularity on an irregular dihedral cover $f: Y\to S^4$ if $Y$ is homotopy equivalent to $\mathbb{CP}^2$ and construct an explicit infinite family of such covers with $Y$ diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{CP}^2$. An obstruction to a knot being homotopically ribbon arises in this setting, and we describe a class of potential counter-examples to the Slice-Ribbon Conjecture. Our tools inc…
We prove the long-standing Montesinos conjecture that any closed oriented PL 4-manifold M is a simple covering of S^4 branched over a locally flat surface (cf [J M Montesinos, 4-manifolds, 3-fold covering spaces and ribbons, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 245 (1978) 453--467]). In fact, we show how to eliminate all the node singularities of the branching set of any simple 4-fold branched covering M \to S^4 arising from the representation theorem given in [R Piergallini, Four-manifolds as 4-fold branched covers of S^4, Topology 34 (1995) 497--508]. Namely, we construct a suitable cobordism between the…
For each surface $S$ of genus $g>2$ we construct pairs of conjugate pseudo-Anosov maps, $φ_1$ and $φ_2$, and two non-equivalent covers $p_i: \tilde S \longrightarrow S$, $i=1,2$, so that the lift of $φ_1$ to $\tilde S$ with respect to $p_1$ coincides with that of $φ_2$ with respect to $p_2$. The mapping tori of the $φ_i$ and their lift provide examples of pairs of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds so that the first is covered by the second in two different ways.
Every closed orientable surface S has the following property: any two connected covers of S of the same degree are homeomorphic (as spaces). In this, paper we give a complete classification of compact 3-manifolds with empty or toroidal boundary which have the above property. We also discuss related group-theoretic questions.
We provide the twisted Alexander polynomials of finite abelian covers over three-dimensional manifolds whose boundary is a finite union of tori. This is a generalization of a well-known formula for the usual Alexander polynomial of knots in finite cyclic branched covers over the three-dimensional sphere.
We are interested in finite groups acting orientation-preservingly on 3-manifolds (arbitrary actions, ie not necessarily free actions). In particular we consider finite groups which contain an involution with nonempty connected fixed point set. This condition is satisfied by the isometry group of any hyperbolic cyclic branched covering of a strongly invertible knot as well as by the isometry group of any hyperbolic 2-fold branched covering of a knot in the 3-sphere. In the paper we give a characterization of nonsolvable groups of this type. Then we consider some possible applications to the st…
We show that every strongly-cyclic branched covering of a (1,1)-knot is a Dunwoody manifold. This result, together with the converse statement previously obtained by Grasselli and Mulazzani, proves that the class of Dunwoody manifolds coincides with the class of strongly-cyclic branched coverings of (1,1)-knots. As a consequence, we obtain a parametrization of (1,1)-knots by 4-tuples of integers. Moreover, using a representation of (1,1)-knots by the mapping class group of the twice punctured torus, we provide an algorithm which gives the parametrization of all torus knots.
Given a 3-manifold M with no spherical boundary components, and a primitive class ϕin H^1(M;Z), we show that the following are equivalent: (1) ϕis a fibered class, (2) the rank gradient of (M,ϕ) is zero, (3) the Heegaard gradient of (M,ϕ) is zero.
We provide new branched covering representations for bounded and/or non-compact 4-manifolds, which extend the known ones for closed 4-manifolds. Assuming $M$ to be a connected oriented PL 4-manifold, our main results are the following: (1) if $M$ is compact with (possibly empty) boundary, there exists a simple branched cover $p:M \to S^4 - \mathop{\mathrm{Int}}(B^4_1 \cup \dots \cup B^4_n)$, where the $B^4_i$'s are disjoint PL 4-balls, $n \geq 0$ is the number of boundary components of $M$; (2) if $M$ is open, there exists a simple branched cover $p : M \to S^4 - \mathop{\mathrm{End}} M$, wher…
We introduce a topological invariant, it a type of a graph-manifold, which takes natural values. For a 4-dimensional graph-manifold, whose type does not exceed two, it is proved that its universal cover is bi-Lipschitz equivalent to a universal cover of an orthogonal graph-manifold (for any Riemannian metrics on graph-manifolds).
A strategy for constructing an embedded sphere in a 4-manifold realizing a given homology class which has been successfully applied in the past is to represent the class as a first step stably by an embedded sphere, i.e. after adding products of 2-spheres, and to move that sphere back into the original manifold. In this paper, we study under what conditions the first step of this approach can be carried out if the 4-manifold at hand is not simply connected. One of our main results is that there are - apart from the well known Arf invariant - additional bordism theoretical obstructions to stabl…
Many three dimensional manifolds are two-fold branched covers of the three dimensional sphere. However, there are some that are not. This paper includes exposition about two-fold branched covers and many examples. It shows that there are three dimensional homology spheres that do not two-fold branched cover any manifold, ones that only two-fold branched cover the three dimensional sphere, ones that just two-fold branched cover a non-trivial manifold, and ones that two-fold branched cover the sphere and non-trivial manifolds. When a manifold is surgery on a knot, the possible quotients via invo…
Small covers arising from 3-dimensional simple polytopes are an interesting class of 3-manifolds. The fundamental group is a rigid invariant for wide classes of 3-manifolds, particularly for orientable Haken manifolds, which include orientable small covers. By using Morse-theoretic approach we give a procedure to get an explicit, balanced presentation of the fundamental group of a closed, orientable 3-dimensional simple cover with minimal number of generators. Beside that the minimal Heegaard splitting is determined by this presentation.
We give examples of closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds with first Betti number 2 and 3 for which no sequence of finite abelian covering spaces increases the first Betti number. For 3-manifolds $M$ with first Betti number 2 we give a characterization in terms of some generalized self-linking numbers of $M$, for there to exist a family of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ covering spaces, $M_n$, in which $β_1(M_n)$ increases linearly with $n$. The latter generalizes work of M. Katz and C. Lescop [KL], by showing that the non-vanishing of any one of these invariants of $M$ is sufficient to guarantee certain optimal syst…
Suppose M is a connected, open, orientable, irreducible 3-manifold which is not homeomorphic to R^3. Given a compact 3-manifold J in M which satisfies certain conditions, Brin and Thickstun have associated to it an open neighborhood V$ called an end reduction of M at J. It has some useful properties which allow one to extend to M various results known to hold for the more restrictive class of eventually end irreducible open 3-manifolds. In this paper we explore the relationship of V and M with regard to their fundamental groups and their covering spaces. In particular we give conditions under …

To a rational homology sphere graph manifold one can associate a weighted tree invariant called splice diagram. In this article we prove a sufficient numerical condition on the splice diagram for a graph manifold to be a singularity link. We also show that if two manifolds have the same splice diagram, then their universal abelian covers are homeomorphic. To prove the last theorem we have to generalize our notions to orbifolds.
We show that Brieskorn manifolds with their standard contact structures are contact branched coverings of spheres. This covering maps a contact open book decomposition of the Brieskorn manifold onto a Milnor open book of the sphere.
The Brieskorn manifolds $B(p,q,r)$ are the $r$-fold cyclic coverings of the 3-sphere $S^{3}$ branched over the torus knot $T(p,q)$. The generalised Sieradski groups $S(m,p,q)$ are groups with $m$-cyclic pre\-sen\-tation $G_{m}(w)$, where defining word $w$ has a special form, depending of $p$ and $q$. In particular, $S(m,3,2) = G_{m}(w)$ is the group with $m$ generators $x_{1}, \ldots, x_{m}$ and $m$ defining relations $w(x_{i}, x_{i+1}, x_{i+2})=1$, where $w(x_{i}, x_{i+1}, x_{i+2}) = x_{i} x_{i+2} x_{i+1}^{-1}$. Presentations of $S(2n,3,2)$ in a certain form $G_{n}(w)$ were investigated by Ho…
Let M be a 3-manifold admitting a strongly irreducible Heegaard surface S and f:M \to M an involution. We construct an invariant Heegaard surface for M of genus at most 8 g(S) - 7. As a consequence, given a (possibly branched) double cover π:M \to N we obtain the following bound on the Heegaard genus of N: g(N) \leq 4g(S) - 3. We also get a bound on the complexity of the branch set in terms of g(S). If we assume that M is non-Haken, by Casson and Gordon we may replace g(S) by g(M) in all the statements above.
We give examples of harmonic maps between negatively curved manifolds with special properties. These negatively curved manifolds do not have the homotopy type of a locally symmetric space.
We prove that the universal cover of any graph manifold quasi-isometrically embeds into a product of three trees. In particular we show that the Assouad-Nagata dimension of the universal cover of any closed graph manifold is 3, proving a conjecture of Smirnov.
We show that a finite type duality group of dimension $d>2$ is the fundamental group of a $(d+3)$-manifold with rationally acyclic universal cover. We use this to find closed manifolds with rationally acyclic universal cover and some nonvanishing $L^2$-Betti numbers outside the middle dimension, which contradicts a rational analogue of a conjecture of Singer.
In this note we prove that any closed graph manifold admitting a metric of non-positive sectional curvature (NPC-metric) has a finite cover, which is fibered over the circle. An explicit criterion to have a finite cover, which is fibered over the circle, is presented for the graph manifolds of certain class.
In this paper we explore coarse properties of cusp-decomposable manifolds first defined by Nguyên Phan. We describe the large scale geometry of the universal cover of a cusp-decomposable manifold and of quasi-isometries between two such universal covers. This description will provide us the tools to prove quasi-isometric rigidity for fundamental groups of cusp-decomposable manifolds.
I give a formula for computing the number of regular $Γ$-coverings of closed orientable Seifert 3-manifolds, for a given finite group $Γ$. The number is computed using a 3d TQFT with finite gauge group, through a cut-and-glue process.
For a closed 3-manifold $M$ in a certain class, we give a presentation of the cellular chain complex of the universal cover of $M$. The class includes all surface bundles, some surgeries of knots in $S^3$, some cyclic branched cover of $S^3$, and some Seifert manifolds. In application, we establish a formula for calculating the linking form of a cyclic branched cover of $S^3$, and develop procedures of computing some Dijkgraaf-Witten invariants.
Inspired by Kronheimer and Mrowka's approach to monopole Floer homology, we develop a model for $\mathbb{Z}/2$-equivariant symplectic Floer theory using equivariant almost complex structures, which admits a localization map to a twisted version of Floer cohomology in the invariant set. We then present applications to Steenrod operations on Lagrangian Floer cohomology, and to the Heegaard Floer homology of double covers of three-manifolds.
We give a homological characterization of $n$-manifolds whose universal covering $\Wi M$ has Gromov's macroscopic dimension $\dim_{mc}\Wi M<n$. As the result we distinguish $\dim_{mc}$ from the macroscopic dimension $\dim_{MC}$ defined by the author \cite{Dr}. We prove the inequality $\dim_{mc}\Wi M<\dim_{MC}\Wi M=n$ for every closed $n$-manifold $M$ whose fundamental group $π$ is a geometrically finite amenable duality group with the cohomological dimension $cd(π)> n$.
In this article we prove a generalization of Selberg's lemma on the existence of torsion free, finite index subgroups of arithmetic groups. Some of the geometric applications are the resolution a conjecture of Nimershiem and answers to questions of Long-Reid and the author.
It is shown that a small cover (resp. real moment-angle manifold) over a simple polytope is an infra-solvmanifold if and only if it is diffeomorphic to a real Bott manifold (resp. flat torus). Moreover, we obtain several equivalent conditions for a small cover being homeomorphic to a real Bott manifold. In addition, we study Riemannian metrics on small covers and real moment-angle manifolds with certain conditions on the Ricci or sectional curvature. We will see that these curvature conditions put very strong restrictions on the topology of the corresponding small covers and real moment-angle …
We classify all closed, aspherical Riemannian manifolds M whose universal cover has indiscrete isometry group. One sample application is the theorem that any such M with word-hyperbolic fundamental group must be isometric to a negatively curved, locally symmetric manifold. Another application is the classification of all contractible Riemannian manifolds covering both compact and (noncompact, complete) finite volume manifold. There are also applications to the Hopf Conjecture, a new proof of Kazhdan's Conjecture (Frankel's Theorem) in complex geometry, etc. Ideas in the proof come from Lie the…
