Any finite group acts freely and homologically trivially on a product of spheres

The main theorem is that if K is a finite CW complex with finite fundamental group G and universal cover homotopy equivalent to a product of spheres X, then G acts smoothly and freely on X x S^n for any n greater than or equal to the dimension of X. If the G-action on the universal cover of K is homologically trivial then so is the action on X x S^n. Non-manifold monodromy spaces of branched coverings between manifolds

By a construction of Berstein and Edmonds every proper branched cover f between manifolds is a factor of a branched covering orbit map from a locally connected and locally compact Hausdorff space called the monodromy space of f to the target manifold. For proper branched covers between 2-manifolds the monodromy space is known to be a manifold. We show that this does not generalize to dimension 3 by constructing a self-map of the 3-sphere for which the monodromy space is not a locally contractible space.

We classify all closed, aspherical Riemannian manifolds M whose universal cover has indiscrete isometry group. Heegaard Floer homology of Matsumoto's manifolds

We consider a homology sphere $M_n(K_1,K_2)$ presented by two knots $K_1,K_2$ with linking number 1 and framing $(0,n)$. We call the manifold {\it Matsumoto's manifold}. We show that there exists no contractible bound of $M_n(T_{2,3},K_2)$ if $n<2τ(K_2)$ holds. We also give a formula of Ozsváth-Szabó's $τ$-invariant as the total sum of the Euler numbers of the reduced filtration. We compute the $δ$-invariants of the twisted Whitehead doubles of torus knots and correction terms of the branched covers of the Whitehead doubles. Every orientable 3-manifold is a BΓ

We show that every orientable 3-manifold is a classifying space BΓwhere Γis a groupoid of germs of homeomorphisms of R. This follows by showing that every orientable 3-manifold M admits a codimension one foliation F such that the holonomy cover of every leaf is contractible. The F we construct can be taken to be C^1 but not C^2. The existence of such an F answers positively a question posed by Tsuboi [Classifying spaces for groupoid structures, notes from minicourse at PUC, Rio de Janeiro (2001)], but leaves open the question of whether M = BΓfor some C^\infty groupoid Γ.

The Smale conjecture for Seifert fibered spaces with hyperbolic base orbifold

Let M be a closed orientable Seifert fibered 3-manifold with a hyperbolic base 2-orbifold, or equivalently, admitting a geometry modeled on H^2 \times R or the universal cover of SL(2,R). Our main result is that the connected component of the identity map in the diffeomorphism group Diff(M) is either contractible or homotopy equivalent to the circle, according as the center of the fundamental group of M is trivial or infinite cyclic. We survey the recent results and current issues on the topological rigidity problem for closed aspherical manifolds, i.e., connected closed manifolds whose universal coverings are contractible. A number of open problems and conjectures are presented during the course of the discussion. We also review the status and applications of the Farrell-Jones Conjecture for algebraic $K$-and $L$-theory for a group ring $RG$ and coefficients in an additive category. Tangential LS-category of K(pi,1)-foliations

In the first part of the paper we show that the tangential Lusternik--Schnirelmann category cat F of a K(pi,1)-foliation F on a manifold M is bounded from below by t-codim F for any t with H_t(M;A) nonzero for some coefficient group A.
