This is a survey on known results and open problems about closed aspherical manifolds, i.e., connected closed manifolds whose universal coverings are contractible. Many examples come from certain kinds of non-positive curvature conditions. The property aspherical which is a purely homotopy theoretical condition implies many striking results about the geometry and analysis of the manifold or its universal covering, and the ring theoretic properties and the K- and L-theory of the group ring associated to its fundamental group. The Borel Conjecture predicts that closed aspherical manifolds are topologically rigid. The article contains new results about product decompositions of closed aspherical manifolds and an announcement of a result joint with Arthur Bartels and Shmuel Weinberger about hyperbolic groups with spheres of dimension greater or equal to six as boundary. At the end we describe (winking) our universe of closed manifolds.
This paper contains examples of closed aspherical manifolds obtained as a by-product of recent work by the author [arXiv:math.GR/0509490] on the relative strict hyperbolization of polyhedra. The following is proved. (I) Any closed aspherical triangulated n-manifold M^n with hyperbolic fundamental group is a retract of a closed aspherical triangulated (n+1)-manifold N^(n+1) with hyperbolic fundamental group. (II) If B_1,...,B_m are closed aspherical triangulated n-manifolds, then there is a closed aspherical triangulated manifold N of dimension n+1 such that N has nonzero simplicial volume, N r…
We show that the aspherical manifolds produced via the relative strict hyperbolization of polyhedra enjoy many group-theoretic and topological properties of open finite volume negatively pinched manifolds, including relative hyperbolicity, nonvanishing of simplicial volume, co-Hopf property, finiteness of outer automorphism group, absence of splitting over elementary subgroups, and acylindricity. In fact, some of these properties hold for any compact aspherical manifold with incompressible aspherical boundary components, provided the fundamental group is hyperbolic relative to fundamental grou…
We prove that every finitely generated group with recursive aspherical presentation embeds into a group with finite aspherical presentation. This and several known facts about groups and manifolds imply that there exists a 4-dimensional closed aspherical manifold $M$ such that the fundamental group $π_1(M)$ coarsely contains an expander, and so it has infinite asymptotic dimension, is not coarsely embeddable into a Hilbert space, and does not satisfy the Baum-Connes conjecture with coefficients. Closed aspherical manifolds with any of these properties were previously unknown.
We show that any open aspherical manifold of dimension n>3 is tangentially homotopy equivalent to an n-manifold whose universal cover is not homeomorphic to the Euclidean space.
We study finite order invariants of null-homotopic immersions of a closed orientable surface into an aspherical orientable 3-manifold. We give the foundational constructions, and classify all order one invariants.
We provide upper bounds on the size of the homology of a closed aspherical Riemannian manifold that only depend on the systole and the volume of balls. Further, we show that linear growth of mod p Betti numbers or exponential growth of torsion homology imply that a closed aspherical manifold is "large".
We show that in all dimensions >7 there are closed aspherical manifolds whose fundamental groups have nontrivial center but do not possess any topological circle actions. This disproves a conjectured converse (proposed by Conner and Raymond) to a classical theorem of Borel.
We establish isosystolic inequalities for a class of manifolds which includes the aspherical manifolds. In particular, we relate the systolic volume of aspherical manifolds first to their minimal entropy, then to the algebraic entropy of their fundamental groups.
We prove a lower bound on the number of maximally broken trajectories of the negative gradient flow of a Morse-Smale function on a closed aspherical manifold in terms of integral (torsion) homology.
The Borel Conjecture predicts that closed aspherical manifolds are topological rigid. We want to investigate when a non-aspherical oriented connected closed manifold M is topological rigid in the following sense. If f: N --> M is an orientation preserving homotopy equivalence with a closed oriented manifold as target, then there is an orientation preserving homeomorphism h: N --> M such that h and f induce up to conjugation the same maps on the fundamental groups. We call such manifolds Borel manifolds. We give partial answers to this questions for S^k x S^d, for sphere bundles over aspherical…

We show that a generic Hamiltonian diffeomorphism on a closed symplectic manifold which is symplectically aspherical has at least the stable Morse number of fixed points - this is in line with a conjecture by Arnold.
Let M be a closed, orientable, irreducible, non-simply connected 3-manifold. We prove that if M admits a sequence of Riemannian metrics whose sectional curvature is locally controlled and whose thick part becomes asymptotically hyperbolic and has a sufficiently small volume, then M is Seifert fibred or contains an incompressible torus. This result gives an alternative approach for the last step in Perelman's proof of the Geometrisation Conjecture for aspherical 3-manifolds.
We fix a null-homologous, homotopically essential knot $J$ in a 3-manifold with PTFA fundamental group and study concordance of knots that are homotopic to $J$. We construct an infinite family of knots that are characteristic to $J$, and then use $L^2$-methods to show that they are not concordant to $J$.
An explicit construction of closed, orientable, smooth, aspherical 4-manifolds with any odd Euler characteristic greater than 12 is presented. The manifolds constructed here are all Haken manifolds in the sense of B. Foozwell and H. Rubinstein and can be systematically reduced to balls by suitably cutting them open along essential codimension-one submanifolds. It is easy to construct examples with even Euler characteristic from products of surfaces. And Euler characteristics divisible by 3 are know to arise from complex algebraic geometry considerations. Examples with Euler characteristic 1, 5…
We define a new class of irreducible groups, called groups not infinite-index presentable by products or not IIPP. We prove that certain aspherical manifolds with fundamental groups not IIPP do not admit maps of non-zero degree from direct products. This extends previous results of Kotschick and Loeh, providing new classes of aspherical manifolds - beyond those non-positively curved ones which were predicted by Gromov - that do not admit maps of non-zero degree from direct products. A sample application is that an aspherical geometric 4-manifold admits a map of non-zero degree from a direct pr…
For a Lie group $G=\R^{n}\ltimes_ϕ\R^{m}$ with the semi-simple action $ϕ:\R^{n}\to {\rm Aut}(\R^{m})$, we show that if $Γ$ is a finite extension of a lattice of $G$ then $K(Γ, 1)$ is formal. Moreover we show that a compact symplectic aspherical manifold with the fundamental group $Γ$ satisfies the hard Lefschetz property. By those results we give many examples of formal solvmanifolds satisfying the hard Lefschetz property but not admitting Kähler structures.
Although Kirby and Siebenmann showed that there are manifolds that do not admit PL structures, the possibility remained that all manifolds could be triangulated. In the late seventies Galewski and Stern and independently Matumoto showed that non-triangulable manifolds exist in all dimensions > 4 if and only if homology 3-spheres with certain properties do not exist. In 2013 Manolescu showed that, indeed, there were no such homology 3-spheres and hence, non-triangulable manifolds exist in each dimension >4. It follows from work of Freedman in 1982 that there are 4-manifolds that cannot be trian…
We study aspherical manifolds that do not support Anosov diffeomorphisms. Weakening conditions of Gogolev and Lafont, we show that the product of an infranilmanifold with finitely many aspherical manifolds whose fundamental groups have trivial center and finite outer automorphism group does not support Anosov diffeomorphisms. In the course of our study, we obtain a result of independent group theoretic and topological interest on the stability of the Hopf property, namely, that the product of finitely many Hopfian groups with trivial center is Hopfian.
Tautological classes, or generalised Miller-Morita-Mumford classes, are basic characteristic classes of smooth fibre bundles, and have recently been used to describe the rational cohomology of classifying spaces of diffeomorphism groups for several types of manifolds. We show that rationally tautological classes depend only on the underlying topological block bundle, and use this to prove the vanishing of tautological classes for many bundles with fibre an aspherical manifold.
We exhibit a closed aspherical 5-manifold of nonpositive curvature that fibers over a circle whose fundamental group is hyperbolic relative to abelian subgroups such that the fiber is a closed aspherical 4-manifold whose fundamental group is not hyperbolic relative to abelian subgroups.
In this paper we show that for a large class C of 4-manifolds each member of C has only finitely many simple homotopy type upto s-cobordism. This result generalizes a similar result of Hillman for certain complex surfaces. We also present a correction in the proof of Hillman's result.
We exhibit geometric situations, where higher indices of the spinor Dirac operator on a spin manifold $N$ are obstructions to positive scalar curvature on an ambient manifold $M$ that contains $N$ as a submanifold. In the main result of this note, we show that the Rosenberg index of $N$ is an obstruction to positive scalar curvature on $M$ if $N \hookrightarrow M \twoheadrightarrow B$ is a fiber bundle of spin manifolds with $B$ aspherical and $π_1(B)$ of finite asymptotic dimension. The proof is based on a new variant of the multi-partitioned manifold index theorem which might be of independe…
We consider the relation between simplicial volume and two of its variants: the stable integral simplicial volume and the integral foliated simplicial volume. The definition of the latter depends on a choice of a measure preserving action of the fundamental group on a probability space. We show that integral foliated simplicial volume is monotone with respect to weak containment of measure preserving actions and yields upper bounds on (integral) homology growth. Using ergodic theory we prove that simplicial volume, integral foliated simplicial volume and stable integral simplicial volume coinc…
A well-known question by Gromov asks whether the vanishing of the simplicial volume of oriented closed connected aspherical manifolds implies the vanishing of the Euler characteristic. We study various versions of Gromov's question and collect strategies towards affirmative answers and strategies towards negative answers to this problem. Moreover, we put Gromov's question into context with other open problems in low- and high-dimensional topology. A special emphasis is put on a comparative analysis of the additivity properties of the simplicial volume and the Euler characteristic for manifolds…
Let $\mathrm{SL}_{n}(\mathbb{Z})$ $(n\geq 3)$ be the special linear group and $M^{r}$ be a closed aspherical manifold. It is proved that when $r<n,$ a group action of $\mathrm{SL}_{n}(\mathbb{Z})$ on $M^{r}$ by homeomorphisms is trivial if and only if the induced group homomorphism $\mathrm{SL}_{n}(% \mathbb{Z})\rightarrow \mathrm{Out}(π_{1}(M))$ is trivial. For (almost) flat manifolds, we prove a similar result in terms of holonomy groups. Especially, when $π_{1}(M)$ is nilpotent, the group $\mathrm{SL}_{n}(% \mathbb{Z})$ cannot act nontrivially on $M$ when $r<n.$ This confirms a conjecture r…
We obtain restrictions on the topology of a closed connected manifold B that bounds a (possibly noncompact) manifold whose interior V admits a complete Riemannian metric of nonpositive sectional curvature. If G denotes the fundamental group of B, then a sample result is that B must be aspherical and incompressible if one of the following is true: (1) V has finite volume and G is virtually nilpotent, (2) G is virtually nilpotent and has no proper torsion-free quotients, (3) G is isomorphic to a uniform, irreducible lattice of real rank > 1.
We show that closed aspherical manifolds supporting an affine structure, whose holonomy map is injective and contains a pure translation, must have vanishing simplicial volume. This provides some further evidence for the veracity of the Auslander Conjecture. Along the way, we provide a simple cohomological criterion for aspherical manifolds with normal amenable subgroups of $π_1$ to have vanishing simplicial volume. This answers a special case of a question due to Lück.
We use the reflection group trick to glue manifolds with corners that are Borel-Serre compactifications of locally symmetric spaces of noncompact type and obtain aspherical manifolds. We call these \emph{piecewise locally symmetric} manifolds. This class of spaces provide new examples of aspherical manifolds whose fundamental groups have the structure of a complex of groups. These manifolds typically do not admit a locally $\CAT(0)$ metric. We prove that any self homotopy equivalence of such manifolds is homotopic to a homeomorphism. We compute the group of self homotopy equivalences of such a…
Given a reducible $3$-manifold $M$ with an aspherical summand in its prime decomposition and a homeomorphism $f\colon M\to M$, we construct a map of degree one from a finite cover of $M\rtimes_f S^1$ to a mapping torus of a certain aspherical $3$-manifold. We deduce that $M\rtimes_f S^1$ has virtually infinite first Betti number, except when all aspherical summands of $M$ are virtual $T^2$-bundles. This verifies all cases of a conjecture of T.-J. Li and Y. Ni, that any mapping torus of a reducible $3$-manifold $M$ not covered by $S^2\times S^1$ has virtually infinite first Betti number, except…
A topological version of a longstanding conjecture of H. Hopf, originally proposed by W. Thurston, states that the sign of the Euler characteristic of a closed aspherical manifold of dimension $d=2m$ depends only on the parity of $m$. Gromov defined several hyperbolization functors which produce an aspherical manifold from a given simplicial or cubical manifold. We investigate the combinatorics of several of these hyperbolizations and verify the Euler Characteristic Sign Conjecture for each of them. In addition, we explore further combinatorial properties of these hyperbolizations as they rela…
We show that the Thurston seminorms of all finite covers of an aspherical 3-manifold determine whether it is a graph manifold, a mixed 3-manifold or hyperbolic.
The Cannon Conjecture for a torsionfree hyperbolic group G with boundary homeomorphic to S^2 says that G is the fundamental group of an aspherical closed 3-manifold M. It is known that then M is a hyperbolic 3-manifold. We prove the stable version that for any closed manifold N of dimension greater or equal to 2 there exists a closed manifold M together with a simple homotopy equivalence from M to the cartesian product of N and BG. If N is aspherical and pi_1(N) satisfies the Farrell-Jones Conjecture, then M is unique up to homeomorphism.
We study finite group actions on smooth manifolds of the form $M\#Σ$, where $Σ$ is an exotic $n$-sphere and $M$ is a closed aspherical space form. We give a classification result for free actions of finite groups on $M\#Σ$ when $M$ is 7-dimensional. We show that if $\mathbb Z/p\mathbb Z$ acts freely on $T^n\#Σ$, then $Σ$ is divisible by $p$ in the group of homotopy spheres. When $M$ is hyperbolic, we give examples $M\#Σ$ that admit no nontrivial smooth action of a finite group, even though Isom($M$) is arbitrarily large. Our proofs combine geometric and topological rigidity results with smooth…
We investigate periodic diffeomorphisms of non-compact aspherical manifolds (and orbifolds) and describe a class of spaces that have no homotopically trivial periodic diffeomorphisms. Prominent examples are moduli spaces of curves and aspherical locally symmetric spaces with non-vanishing Euler characteristic. In the irreducible locally symmetric case, we show that no complete metric has more symmetry than the locally symmetric metric. In the moduli space case, we build on work of Farb and Weinberger and prove an analogue of Royden's theorem for complete finite volume metrics.
