We study the flow $M_t$ of a smooth, strictly convex hypersurface by its mean curvature in $\mathrm{R}^{n+1}$. The surface remains smooth and convex, shrinking monotonically until it disappears at a critical time $T$ and point $x^*$ (which is due to Huisken). This is equivalent to saying that the corresponding rescaled mean curvature flow converges to a sphere ${\bf S^n}$ of radius $\sqrt{n}$. In this paper we will study the rate of exponential convergence of a rescaled flow. We will present here a method that tells us the rate of the exponential decay is at least $\frac{2}{n}$. We can define the ''arrival time'' $u$ of a smooth, strictly convex $n$-dimensional hypersurface as it moves with normal velocity equal to its mean curvature as $u(x) = t$, if $x\in M_t$ for $x\in \Int(M_0)$. Huisken proved that for $n\ge 2$ $u(x)$ is $C^2$ near $x^*$. The case $n=1$ has been treated by Kohn and Serfaty, they proved $C^3$ regularity of $u$. As a consequence of obtained rate of convergence of the mean curvature flow we prove that $u$ is not $C^3$ near $x^*$ for $n\ge 2$. We also show that the obtained rate of convergence $2/n$, that comes out from linearizing a mean curvature flow is the optimal one, at least for $n\ge 2$.
In this paper, we prove a sharp convergence theorem for the mean curvature flow of arbitrary codimension in spheres which improves Baker's convergence theorem. In particular, we obtain a new differentiable sphere theorem for submanifolds in spheres.
We study the provenance of singularity formation under mean curvature flow and volume preserving mean curvature flow in an axially symmetric setting. We prove that if the mean curvature is uniformly bounded on any finite time interval, then no singularities can develop during that time under both mean curvature flow and volume preserving mean curvature flow.
In this work, we consider sequences of $C^2$ metrics which converge to a $C^2$ metric in $C^0$ sense. We show that if the scalar curvature of the sequence is almost non-negative in the integral sense, then the limiting metric has scalar curvature lower bound in point-wise sense.
In this paper, we investigate the mean curvature flow of compact surfaces in $4$-dimensional space forms. We prove the convergence theorems for the mean curvature flow under certain pinching conditions involving the normal curvature, which generalise Baker-Nguyen's convergence theorem.
In this paper, we discuss uniqueness and backward uniqueness for mean curvature flow of non-compact manifolds. We use an energy argument to prove two uniqueness theorems for mean curvature flow with possibly unbounded curvatures. These generalize the results by Chen and Yin. Using similar method, we also obtain a uniqueness result on Ricci flows. A backward uniqueness theorem is also proved for mean curvature flow with bounded curvatures.
We extend Cheeger-Gromov's and Anderson's convergence theorems to regular limit spaces of manifolds with bounded Ricci curvature and local covering geometry, by establishing the $C^{1,α}$-regularities that are the best one may expect on those Ricci-limit spaces. As an application we prove an optimal generalization of Fukaya's fibration theorem on collapsed manifolds with bounded Ricci curvature, which also improves the original version to $C^{1,α}$ limit spaces.
In this paper, we derive a mean curvature estimate for eternal solutions (including translating solutions) of almost-calibrated Lagrangian mean curvature flow in complex Euclidean space. As a consequence, we show a non-existence result for eternal solutions of almost-calibrated Lagrangian mean curvature flow.
In this paper, we investigate the preservability of the curvature-adaptedness along the mean curvature flow starting from a compact curvature-adapted hypersurface in locally symmetric spaces, where the curvature-adaptedness means that the shape operator and the normal Jacobi operator of the hypersurface commute.
We estimate from above the rate at which a solution to the rescaled mean curvature flow on a closed hypersurface may converge to a limit self-similar solution, i.e. a shrinker. Our main result implies that any solution which converges to a shrinker faster than any fixed exponential rate must itself be shrinker itself.
We prove that smooth convex $α$-noncollapsed ancient mean curvature flow satisfies a quantitative curvature estimate $H(y,t)\leq CH(x,t)(H(x,t)|x-y|+1)^2$ for any pair of $x,y$. In other words, the rescaled curvature grows at most quadratically in terms of the rescaled extrinsic distance.
In this paper, we show that if the mean curvature of a closed smooth embedded mean curvature flow in R^3 is of type-I, then the rescaled flow at the first finite singular time converges smoothly to a self-shrinker flow with multiplicity one. This result confirms Ilmanen's multiplicity-one conjecture under the assumption that the mean curvature is of type-I. As a corollary, we show that the mean curvature at the first singular time of a closed smooth embedded mean curvature flow in R^3 is at least of type-I.
We extend the concept of singular Ricci flow by Kleiner and Lott from 3d compact manifolds to 3d complete manifolds with possibly unbounded curvature. As an application of the generalized singular Ricci flow, we show that for any 3d complete Riemannian manifold with non-negative Ricci curvature, there exists a smooth Ricci flow starting from it.
Advection and mean curvature flow is used as a model of bone microarchitecture adaptation. It is an equivalent geometric flow to prescribed mean curvature flow with an additional rate term. In order to validate numerical methods for simulating this flow and developing an inverse solver, a closed-form solution for advection and mean curvature flow of a sphere is derived.
If the initial hypersurface of an immortal mean curvature flow is asymptotic to a regular cone whose entropy is small, the flow will become asymptotically self-expanding. Moreover, the expander that gives rise to the limiting flow is asymptotically stable as an equilibrium solution of the normalized mean curvature flow.
We demonstrate that the property of being Alexandrov immersed is preserved along mean curvature flow. Furthermore, we demonstrate that mean curvature flow techniques for mean convex embedded flows such as noncollapsing and gradient estimates also hold in this setting. We also indicate the necessary modifications to the work of Brendle--Huisken to allow for mean curvature flow with surgery for the Alexandrov immersed, $2$-dimensional setting.
In this paper, we consider Kahler-Ricci flow on n-dimensional Kahler manifold with semi-ample canonical line bundle and 0< m:= Kod(X)<n. Such manifolds admit a Calabi-Yau fibration over its canonical model. We prove that the scalar curvature of the Kahler metric along the normalized Kahler-Ricci flow converge to -m outside the singular set of this fibration.
In this paper, we derive the evolution equation for the first eigenvalue of the Witten-Laplace operator acting on the space of functions along the mean curvature flow on a closed oriented manifold. We show some interesting monotonic quantities under the mean curvature flow.
In this paper, we study the flow of closed, starshaped hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with speed $r^ασ_2^{1/2},$ where $σ_2^{1/2}$ is the normalized square root of the scalar curvature, $α\geq 2,$ and $r$ is the distance from points on the hypersurface to the origin. We prove that the flow exists for all time and the starshapedness is preserved. Moreover, after normalization, we show that the flow converges exponentially fast to a sphere centered at origin. When $α<2,$ a counterexample is given for the above convergence.
We make rigorous an old idea of using mean curvature flow to prove a theorem of Richard Hamilton on the compactness of proper hypersurfaces with pinched, bounded curvature.
Bounds of total curvature and entropy are two common conditions placed on mean curvature flows. We show that these two hypotheses are equivalent for the class of ancient complete embedded smooth planar curve shortening flows, which are one-dimensional mean curvature flows. As an application, we give a short proof of the uniqueness of tangent flow at infinity of an ancient smooth complete non-compact curve shortening flow with finite entropy embedded in $\mathbb{R}^2$.
We study the behaviour of the normalized Kähler-Ricci flow on complete Kähler manifolds of negative holomorphic sectional curvature. We show that the flow exists for all time and converges to a Kähler-Einstein metric of negative scalar curvature, recovering a result of Wu and Yau.
