Let A be a graded-commutative, connected k-algebra generated in degree 1. The homotopy Lie algebra g_A is defined to be the Lie algebra of primitives of the Yoneda algebra, Ext_A(k,k). Under certain homological assumptions on A and its quadratic closure, we express g_A as a semi-direct product of the well-understood holonomy Lie algebra h_A with a certain h_A-module. This allows us to compute the homotopy Lie algebra associated to the cohomology ring of the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement, provided some combinatorial assumptions are satisfied. As an application, we give examples of hyperplane arrangements whose complements have the same Poincaré polynomial, the same fundamental group, and the same holonomy Lie algebra, yet different homotopy Lie algebras.
We show that the rational homotopy type of the complement of a toric arrangement is completely determined by two sets of combinatorial data. This is obtained by introducing a differential graded algebra over Q whose minimal model is equivalent to the Sullivan minimal model of the arrangement.
In this paper we represent the Vassiliev model for the homotopy type of the one-point compactification of subspace arrangements as a homotopy colimit of an appropriate diagram over the nerve complex of the intersection semilattice of the arrangement. Furthermore, using a generalization of simplicial collapses to diagrams of topological spaces over simplicial complexes, we construct an explicit deformation retraction from the Vassiliev model to the Ziegler-Zivaljevic model.
We give combinatorial models for the homotopy type of complements of elliptic arrangements (i.e., certain sets of abelian subvarieties in a product of elliptic curves). We give a presentation of the fundamental group of such spaces and, as an application, we treat the case of ordered configuration spaces of elliptic curves. Our models are finite polyhedral CW complexes, and our combinatorial tools of choice are acyclic categories (small categories without loops). As a stepping stone, we give a characterization of which acyclic categories arise as face categories of polyhedral CW complexes.
The homotopy type of the complement of a complex coordinate subspace arrangement is studied by fathoming out the connection between its topological and combinatorial structures. A family of arrangements for which the complement is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres is described. One consequence is an application in commutative algebra: certain local rings are proved to be Golod, that is, all Massey products in their homology vanish.
To any graph and smooth algebraic curve $C$ one may associate a "hypercurve" arrangement and one can study the rational homotopy theory of the complement $X$. In the rational case ($C=\mathbb{C}$), there is considerable literature on the rational homotopy theory of $X$, and the trigonometric case ($C = \mathbb{C}^\times$) is similar in flavor. The case of when $C$ is a smooth projective curve of positive genus is more complicated due to the lack of formality of the complement. When the graph is chordal, we use quadratic-linear duality to compute the Malcev Lie algebra and the minimal model of …
We examine the first non-vanishing higher homotopy group, $π_p$, of the complement of a hypersolvable, non--supersolvable, complex hyperplane arrangement, as a module over the group ring of the fundamental group, $\Zπ_1$. We give a presentation for the $I$--adic completion of $π_p$. We deduce that the second nilpotent $I$--adic quotient of $π_p$ is determined by the combinatorics of the arrangement, and we give a combinatorial formula for the second associated graded piece, $\gr^1_I π_p$. We relate the torsion of this graded piece to the dimensions of the minimal generating systems of the Orli…
In "On the homotopy theory of arrangements," published in 1986, the authors gave a comprehensive survey of the subject. This article updates and continues the earlier article, noting some key open problems.
We generalize results of Hattori on the topology of complements of hyperplane arrangements, from the class of generic arrangements, to the much broader class of hypersolvable arrangements. We show that the higher homotopy groups of the complement vanish in a certain combinatorially determined range, and we give an explicit Zπ_1-module presentation of π_p, the first non-vanishing higher homotopy group. We also give a combinatorial formula for the π_1-coinvariants of π_p. For affine line arrangements whose cones are hypersolvable, we provide a minimal resolution of π_2, and study some of the pro…
Let A be a geometric arrangement such that codim(x) > 1 for every x in A. We prove that, if the complement space M(A) is rationally hyperbolic, then there exists an injective from a free Lie algebra L(u,v) to the homotopy Lie algebra of M(A).
Given a space $X$ and a simplicial complex $K$ with $m$-vertices, the arrangement of partially diagonal subspaces of $X^m$, called the dragonal arrangement, is defined. We decompose the suspension of the diagonal arrangement when $2(dim K + 1) < m$, which generalizes the result of Labassi. As a corollary, we calculate the Euler characteristic of the complement when $X$ is a closed connected manifold.
Let A be a subspace arrangement with a geometric lattice such that codim(x) > 1 for every x in A. Using rational homotopy theory, we prove that the complement M(A) is rationally elliptic if and only if the sum of the orthogonal subspaces is a direct sum. The homotopy type of M(A) is also given: it is a product of odd dimensional spheres. Finally, some other equivalent conditions are given, such as Poincare duality. Those results give a complete description of arrangements (with geometric lattice and with the codimension condition on the subspaces) such that M(A) is rationally elliptic, and sho…
We present a theory that produces several examples where the homotopy Lie algebra of a complex hyperplane arrangement is not finitely presented. We also present examples of hyperplane arrangements where the enveloping algebra of this Lie algebra has an irrational Hilbert series. This answers two questions of Denham and Suciu.
A toric arrangement is a finite set of hypersurfaces in a complex torus, every hypersurface being the kernel of a character. In the present paper we build a CW-complex homotopy equivalent to the arrangement complement, with a combinatorial description similar to that of the well-known Salvetti complex. If the toric arrangement is defined by a Weyl group we also provide an algebraic description, very handy for cohomology computations. In the last part we give a description in terms of tableaux for a toric arrangement appearing in robotics.
Let $\mathcal{A} $ be a complexified-real arrangement of lines in $\mathbb{C}^2.$ Let $H$ be any line in $ \mathcal{A} $. Then, form a new complexified-real arrangement $ \mathcal{B}_H = \mathcal{A} \cup \mathcal{C} $ where $ \mathcal{C} \cup \{H\} $ is a pencil of lines with multiplicity $ m\geq 3 $, the intersection point in the pencil is not a multiple point in $ \mathcal{A}, $ and every line in $ \mathcal{C} $ intersects every line in $ \mathcal{A}\setminus \{H\} $ in points of multiplicity two. In this article, we show that for $ H_1, H_2 \in \mathcal{A} $ we may have that $ \mathcal{B}_{…
We define a partial ordering on the set Q = Q(M) of pairs of topes of an oriented matroid M, and show the geometric realization |Q| of the order complex of Q has the same homotopy type as the Salvetti complex of M. For any element e of the ground set, the complex |Qe| associated to the rank-one oriented matroid on {e} has the homotopy type of the circle. There is a natural free simplicial action of Z4 on |Q|, with orbit space isomorphic to the order complex of the poset Q(M,e) associated to the pointed (or affine) oriented matroid (M,e). If M is the oriented matroid of an arrangement A of line…
Swartz proved that any matroid can be realized as the intersection lattice of an arrangement of codimension one homotopy spheres on a sphere. This was an unexpected extension from the oriented matroid case, but unfortunately the construction is not explicit. Anderson later provided an explicit construction, but had to use cell complexes of high dimensions that are homotopy equivalent to lower dimensional spheres. Using diagrams of spaces we give an explicit construction of arrangements in the right dimensions. Swartz asked if it is possible to arrange spheres of codimension two, and we provide…
We describe a new relation between the topology of hypersurface complements, Milnor fibers and degree of gradient mappings. In particular we show that any projective hypersurface has affine parts which are bouquets of spheres. The main tools are the polar curves and the affine Lefschetz theory developped by H. Hamm, D.T. Lê and A. Némethi. In the special case of the hyperplane arrangements, we strengthen some results due to Orlik and Terao (see Math. Ann. 301(1995)) and obtain the minimality of hyperplane arrangements (see Randell math.AT/0011101 for another proof of this result). This is then…
We prove that the complement of a toric arrangement has the homotopy type of a minimal CW complex. As a corollary we obtain that the integer cohomology of these spaces is torsion free. We use Discrete Morse Theory, providing a sequence of cellular collapses that leads to a minimal complex.
It is known that there exist hyperplane arrangements with same underlying matroid that admit non-homotopy equivalent complement manifolds. In this work we show that, in any rank, complex central hyperplane arrangements with up to 7 hyperplanes and same underlying matroid are isotopic. In particular, the diffeomorphism type of the complement manifold and the Milnor fiber and fibration of these arrangements are combinatorially determined, i.e., they depend uniquely on the underlying matroid. To do this, we associate to every such matroid a topological space, that we call the reduced realization …
We show that if the fundamental groups of the complements of two line arrangements in the complex projective plane are isomorphic to the same direct sum of free groups, then the complements of the arrangements are homotopy equivalent. For any such arrangement, we construct another arrangement that is complexified-real, the intersection lattices of the arrangements are isomorphic, and the complements of the arrangements are diffeomorphic.
To every affine real arrangement of hyperplanes we associate a family of diagrams of spaces over the face poset of the arrangement. We show that any cover of the complement of the complexification of the arrangement is homotopy equivalent to the homotopy colimit of one of the diagrams. More precisely, we show that any cover of the Salvetti complex is isomorphic to the order complex of the poset limit of one of the diagrams. We thus obtain explicit simplicial models for covers of the Salvetti complex.
Quillen showed how to describe the homotopy theory of simply-connected rational spaces in terms of differential graded Lie algebras. Here we survey a generalization of Quillen's results that describes the $v_n$-periodic localizations of homotopy theory (where rational corresponds to $n=0$) in terms of spectral Lie algebras. The latter form an extension of the theory of Lie algebras to the setting of stable homotopy theory. This is a chapter written for the Handbook of Homotopy Theory edited by Haynes Miller.
To every realizable oriented matroid there corresponds an arrangement of real hyperplanes. The homeomorphism type of the complexified complement of such an arrangement is completely determined by the oriented matroid. In this paper we study arrangements of pseudohyperplanes; they correspond to non-realizable oriented matroids. These arrangements arise as a consequence of the Folkman-Lawrence topological representation theorem. We propose a generalization of the complexification process in this context. In particular we construct a space naturally associated with these pseudo-arrangements which…
We construct a dg Lie model for the universal cover of the classifying space of the grouplike monoid of homotopy automorphisms of a space that fix a given subspace.
We compute the homotopy groups of the spaces of self maps of Lie groups of rank 2, SU(3), Sp(2), and G_2. We use the cell structures of these Lie groups and the standard methods of homotopy theory.
We construct Lie algebras of derivations (and identify their geometrical realization) whose Maurer-Cartan sets provide moduli spaces describing the classes of homotopy types of rational spaces sharing either the same homotopy Lie algebra, homology or cohomology.
The first aim of this paper is to study the $p$-local higher homotopy commutativity of Lie groups in the sense of Sugawara. The second aim is to apply this result to the $p$-local higher homotopy commutativity of gauge groups. Although the higher homotopy commutativity of Lie groups in the sense of Williams is already known, the higher homotopy commutativity in the sense of Sugawara is necessary for this application. The third aim is to resolve the $5$-local higher homotopy non-commutativity problem of the exceptional Lie group $\mathrm{G}_2$, which has been open for a long time.
We develop the theory of arrangements of spheres. Consider a finite collection of codimension-$1$ subspheres in a positive-dimensional sphere. There are two posets associated with this collection: the poset of faces and the poset of intersections. We also associate a topological space: the complement of the union of tangent bundles of these subspheres in the tangent bundle of the ambient sphere. We call this space the tangent bundle complement. As in the case of hyperplane arrangements the aim of this new notion is to understand the interaction between the combinatorics of the intersections an…
A simply connected topological space X has homotopy Lie algebra $π_*(ΩX) \tensor \Q$. Following Quillen, there is a connected differential graded free Lie algebra (dgL) called a Lie model, which determines the rational homotopy type of X, and whose homology is isomorphic to the homotopy Lie algebra. We show that such a Lie model can be replaced with one that has a special property we call separated. The homology of a separated dgL has a particular form which lends itself to calculations.
We note that a recent result of the second author yields upper bounds for odd-primary homotopy exponents of compact simple Lie groups which are often quite close to the lower bounds obtained from v_1-periodic homotopy theory.
We calculate the higher homotopy groups of the Deligne-Getzler infinity-groupoid associated to a nilpotent L-infinity algebra. As an application, we present a new approach to the rational homotopy theory of mapping spaces.
The $p$-local homotopy types of gauge groups of principal $G$-bundles over $S^4$ are classified when $G$ is a compact connected exceptional Lie group without $p$-torsion in homology except for $(G,p)=(\mathrm{E}_7,5)$.
We propose a notion of 1-homotopy for generalized maps. This notion generalizes those of natural transformation and ordinary homotopy for functors. The 1-homotopy type of a Lie groupoid is shown to be invariant under Morita equivalence. As an application we consider orbifolds as groupoids and study the notion of orbifold 1-homotopy type induced by a 1-homotopy between presentations of the orbifold maps.
The purpose of this paper is to study the topology of certain toric varieties $X_I$, arising as quotients of the action of $\C^*$ on complements of arrangements of coordinate subspaces in $\C^n$, and to improve the homotopy stability dimension for the inclusion map $i_d:\Hol_d^*(S^2,X_I)\to \Map_d^*(S^2,X_I)$ given in \cite{GKY1} by using spectral sequences induced from simplicial resolutions.
Through the study of Morse theory on the associated Milnor fiber, we show that complex hyperplane arrangement complements are minimal. That is, the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement has the homotopy type of a CW complex in which the number of p-cells equals the p-th betti number.
Given a hyperplane arrangement in a complex vector space of dimension n, there is a natural associated arrangement of codimension k subspaces in a complex vector space of dimension k*n. Topological invariants of the complement of this subspace arrangement are related to those of the complement of the original hyperplane arrangement. In particular, if the hyperplane arrangement is fiber-type, then, apart from grading, the Lie algebra obtained from the descending central series for the fundamental group of the complement of the hyperplane arrangement is isomorphic to the Lie algebra of primitive…
In this paper an algebraic model for unbased rational homotopy theory from the perspective of curved Lie algebras is constructed. As part of this construction a model structure for the category of pseudo-compact curved Lie algebras with curved morphisms will be introduced; one which is Quillen equivalent to a certain model structure of unital commutative differential graded algebras, thus extending the known Quillen equivalence of augmented algebras and differential graded Lie algebras.
Let M be a homogeneous space admitting a left translation by a connected Lie group G. The adjoint to the action gives rise to a map from G to the monoid of self-homotopy equivalences of M.The purpose of this paper is to investigate the injectivity of the homomorphism which is induced by the adjoint map on the rational homotopy. In particular, the visible degrees are determined explicitly for all the cases of simple Lie groups and their associated homogeneous spaces of rank one which are classified by Oniscik.
Let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group, or more generally a path connected topological group of the homotopy type of a finite CW-complex, and let $X$ be a rational nilpotent $G$-space. In this paper we analyze the homotopy type of the homotopy fixed point set $X^{hG}$, and the natural injection $k\colon X^G\hookrightarrow X^{hG}$. We show that if $X$ is elliptic, that is, it has finite dimensional rational homotopy and cohomology, then each path component of $X^{hG}$ is also elliptic. We also give an explicit algebraic model of the inclusion $k$ based on which we can prove, for instance, tha…
This is my attempt to rediscover how Dennis realized that he had discovered/invented $L_\infty$-algebras a.k.a. strongly homotopy Lie algebras before my colleagues and I defined them.
We prove a "purity implies formality" statement in the context of the rational homotopy theory of smooth complex algebraic varieties, and apply it to complements of hypersurface arrangements. In particular, we prove that the complement of a toric arrangement is formal. This is analogous to the classical formality theorem for complements of hyperplane arrangements, due to Brieskorn, and generalizes a theorem of De Concini and Procesi.
This belongs to a series of papers devoted to the study of the cohomology of classifying spaces of Lie groupoids. Our aim here is to introduce and study the notion of representation up to homotopy of Lie groupoids, the resulting derived category, and to show that the adjoint representation is well defined as a representation up to homotopy. As an application, we extend Bott's spectral sequence converging to the cohomology of classifying spaces from Lie groups to Lie groupoids.
We introduce and study the notion of representation up to homotopy of a Lie algebroid, paying special attention to examples. We use representations up to homotopy to define the adjoint representation of a Lie algebroid and show that the resulting cohomology controls the deformations of the structure. The Weil algebra of a Lie algebroid is defined and shown to coincide with Kalkman's BRST model for equivariant cohomology in the case of group actions.
In this note we show that the second homotopy group of $B(2,G)$, the classifying space for commutativity for a compact Lie group $G$, contains a direct summand isomorphic to $π_1(G)\oplusπ_1([G,G])$, where $[G,G]$ is the commutator subgroup of $G$. It follows from a similar statement for $E(2,G)$, the homotopy fiber of the canonical inclusion $B(2,G)\hookrightarrow BG$. As a consequence of our main result we obtain that if $E(2,G)$ is 2-connected, then $[G,G]$ is simply-connected. This last result completes how the higher connectivity of $E(2,G)$ resembles the higher connectivity of $[G,G]$ fo…
We give a new solution of the "homotopy periods" problem, as highlighted by Sullivan, which places explicit geometrically meaningful formulae first dating back to Whitehead in the context of Quillen's formalism for rational homotopy theory and Koszul-Moore duality. Geometrically, we show that homotopy groups are rationally given by "generalized linking/intersection invariants" of cochain data. Moreover, we give a method for determining when two maps from $S^n$ to $X$ are homotopic after allowing for multiplication by some integer. For applications, we investigate wedges of spheres and homogene…
We consider a homotopy theory obtained from that of pointed spaces by inverting the maps inducing isomorphisms in $v_n$-periodic homotopy groups. The case n = 0 corresponds to rational homotopy theory. In analogy with Quillen's results in the rational case, we prove that this $v_n$-periodic homotopy theory is equivalent to the homotopy theory of Lie algebras in T(n)-local spectra. We also compare it to the homotopy theory of commutative coalgebras in T(n)-local spectra, where it turns out there is only an equivalence up to a certain convergence issue of the Goodwillie tower of the identity.
Since Quillen proved his famous equivalences of homotopy categories in 1969, much work has been done towards classifying the rational homotopy types of simply connected topological places. The majority of this work has focused on rational homotopy types with the same cohomology algebra. The models in this case were differential graded algebras and acted similarly to differential forms. These models were then used together with some deformation theory to describe a moduli space for all rational homotopy types with a given cohomology algebra. Indeed, this theory has been very well developed. How…
Homotopy Lie groups, recently invented by W.G. Dwyer and C.W. Wilkerson, represent the culmination of a long evolution. The basic philosophy behind the process was formulated almost 25 years ago by Rector in his vision of a homotopy theoretic incarnation of Lie group theory. What was then technically impossible has now become feasible thanks to modern advances such as Miller's proof of the Sullivan conjecture and Lannes's division functors. Today, with Dwyer and Wilkerson's implementation of Rector's vision, the tantalizing classification theorem seems to be within grasp. Supported by motivati…

The semigroup of the homotopy classes of the self-homotopy maps of a finite complex which induce the trivial homomorphism on homotopy groups is nilpotent. We determine the nilpotency of these semigroups of compact Lie groups and finite Hopf spaces of rank 2. We also study the nilpotency of semigroups for Lie groups of higher rank. Especially, we give Lie groups with the nilpotency of the semigroups arbitrarily large.
We prove that the complement of any affine 2-arrangement in R^d is minimal, that is, it is homotopy equivalent to a cell complex with as many i-cells as its i-th rational Betti number. For the proof, we provide a Lefschetz-type hyperplane theorem for complements of 2-arrangements, and introduce Alexander duality for combinatorial Morse functions. Our results greatly generalize previous work by Falk, Dimca--Papadima, Hattori, Randell, and Salvetti--Settepanella and others, and they demonstrate that in contrast to previous investigations, a purely combinatorial approach suffices to show minimali…
We study the group of homotopy classes of self maps of compact Lie groups which induce the trivial homomorphism on homotopy groups. We completely determine the groups for SU(3) and Sp(2). We investigate these groups for simple Lie groups in the cases when Lie groups are p-regular or quasi p-regular. We apply our results to the groups of self homotopy equivalences.
In a previous work, by extending the classical Quillen construction to the non-simply connected case, we have built a pair of adjoint functors, 'model' and 'realization', between the categories of simplicial sets and complete differential graded Lie algebras. This paper is a follow up of this work. We show that when X is a finite connected simplicial set, then the realization of the model of X is the disjoint union of the Bousfield-Kan completion of X with an external point. We also define a model category structure on the category of complete differential graded algebras making the two previo…
