Gerhold conjectured and proved conditionally that (log n: n=1,2,...) is not a holonomic sequence. Flajolet, Gerhold and Salvy gave a proof using an analytic machinery. We give a simple proof.
A sequence $f_n(q)$ is $q$-holonomic if it satisfies a nontrivial linear recurrence with coefficients polynomials in $q$ and $q^n$. Our main theorems state that $q$-holonomicity is preserved under twisting, i.e., replacing $q$ by $ωq$ where $ω$ is a complex root of unity, and under the substitution $q \to q^α$ where $α$ is a rational number. Our proofs are constructive, work in the multivariate setting of $\partial$-finite sequences and are implemented in the Mathematica package HolonomicFunctions. Our results are illustrated by twisting natural $q$-holonomic sequences which appear in quantum …
We show that Stieltjes moment sequences are infinitely log-convex, which parallels a famous result that (finite) Pólya frequency sequences are infinitely log-concave. We introduce the concept of $q$-Stieltjes moment sequences of polynomials and show that many well-known polynomials in combinatorics are such sequences. We provide a criterion for linear transformations and convolutions preserving Stieltjes moment sequences. Many well-known combinatorial sequences are shown to be Stieltjes moment sequences in a unified approach and therefore infinitely log-convex, which in particular settles a co…
We consider the higher order Turán inequality and higher order log-concavity for sequences $\{a_n\}_{n \ge 0}$ such that \[ \frac{a_{n-1}a_{n+1}}{a_n^2} = 1 + \sum_{i=1}^m \frac{r_i(\log n)}{n^{α_i}} + o\left( \frac{1}{n^β} \right), \] where $m$ is a nonnegative integer, $α_i$ are real numbers, $r_i(x)$ are rational functions of $x$ and \[ 0 < α_1 < α_2 < \cdots < α_m < β. \] We will give a sufficient condition on the higher order Turán inequality and the $r$-log-concavity for $n$ sufficiently large. Most $P$-recursive sequences fall in this frame. At last, we will give a method to find the ex…
McNamara and Sagan conjectured that if $a_0,a_1, a_2, \ldots$ is a Pólya frequency (PF) sequence, then so is $a_0^2, a_1^2 -a_0a_2, a_2^2-a_1a_3, \ldots$. We prove this conjecture for a natural class of PF-sequences which are interpolated by polynomials. In particular, this proves that the columns of Pascal's triangle are infinitely log-concave, as conjectured by McNamara and Sagan. We also give counterexamples to the first mentioned conjecture. Our methods provide families of nonlinear operators that preserve the property of having only real and non-positive zeros.
We prove the reverse ultra log-concavity of the Boros-Moll polynomials. We further establish an inequality which implies the log-concavity of the sequence $\{i!d_i(m)\}$ for any $m\geq 2$, where $d_i(m)$ are the coefficients of the Boros-Moll polynomials $P_m(a)$. This inequality also leads to the fact that in the asymptotic sense, the Boros-Moll sequences are just on the borderline between ultra log-concavity and reverse ultra log-concavity. We propose two conjectures on the log-concavity and reverse ultra log-concavity of the sequence $\{d_{i-1}(m) d_{i+1}(m)/d_i(m)^2\}$ for $m\geq 2$.
We introduce the notion of infinitely log-monotonic sequences. By establishing a connection between completely monotonic functions and infinitely log-monotonic sequences, we show that the sequences of the Bernoulli numbers, the Catalan numbers and the central binomial coefficients are infinitely log-monotonic. In particular, if a sequence $\{a_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ is log-monotonic of order two, then it is ratio log-concave in the sense that the sequence $\{a_{n+1}/a_{n}\}_{n\geq 0}$ is log-concave. Furthermore, we prove that if a sequence $\{a_n\}_{n\geq k}$ is ratio log-concave, then the sequence $…
A sequence $\{z_n\}_{n\geq0}$ is called ratio log-convex in the sense that the ratio sequence $\{\frac{z_{n+1}}{z_n}\}_{n\geq0}$ is log-convex. Based on a three-term recurrence for sequences, we develop techniques for dealing with the ratio log-convexity of ratio sequences. As applications, we prove that the ratio sequences of numbers, including the derangement numbers, the Motzkin numbers, the Fine numbers, Franel numbers and the Domb numbers are ratio log-convex, respectively. Finally, we not only prove that the sequence of derangement numbers is asymptotically infinitely log-monotonic, but …
This paper presents the log-concavity of the $m$-gonal figurate number sequences. The author gives and proves the recurrence formula for $m$-gonal figurate number sequences and its corresponding quotient sequences which are found to be bounded. Finally, the author also show that for $m\geq 3$, the sequence $\big \{S_n(m)\big\}_{n\geq 1}$ of $m$-gonal figurate numbers is a log-concave.
The Catalan-Larcombe-French sequence $\{P_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ arises in a series expansion of the complete elliptic integral of the first kind. It has been proved that the sequence is log-balanced. In the paper, by exploring a criterion due to Chen and Xia for testing 2-log-convexity of a sequence satisfying three-term recurrence relation, we prove that the new sequence $\{P^2_n-P_{n-1}P_{n+1}\}_{n\geq 1}$ are strictly log-convex and hence the Catalan-Larcombe-French sequence is strictly 2-log-convex.
A sequence $\{ a_n \}_{n \ge 0}$ is said to be asymptotically $r$-log-convex if it is $r$-log-convex for $n$ sufficiently large. We present a criterion on the asymptotical $r$-log-convexity based on the asymptotic behavior of $a_n a_{n+2}/a_{n+1}^2$. As an application, we show that most P-recursive sequences are asymptotic $r$-log-convexity for any integer $r$ once they are log-convex. Moreover, for a concrete integer $r$, we present a systematic method to find the explicit integer $N$ such that a P-recursive sequence $\{a_n\}_{n \ge N}$ is $r$-log-convex. This enable us to prove the $r$-log-c…
We prove the log-concavity of the Fennessey-Larcombe-French sequence based on its three-term recurrence relation, which was recently conjectured by Zhao. The key ingredient of our approach is a sufficient condition for log-concavity of a sequence subject to certain three-term recurrence.
In a recent proof of the log-concavity of genus polynomials of some families of graphs, Gross et al. defined the weakly synchronicity relation between log-concave sequences, and conjectured that the convolution operation by any log-concave sequence preserves weakly synchronicity. We disprove it by providing a counterexample. Furthermore, we find the so-called partial synchronicity relation between log-concave sequences, which is (i) weaker than the synchronicity, (ii) stronger than the weakly synchronicity, and (iii) preserved by the convolution operation.
Two interesting sequences arose in the study of the series expansions of the complete elliptic integrals, which are called the Catalan-Larcombe-French sequence $\{P_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ and the Fennessey-Larcombe-French sequence $\{V_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ respectively. In this paper, we prove the log-convexity of $\{V_n^2-V_{n-1}V_{n+1}\}_{n\geq 2}$ and $\{n!V_n\}_{n\geq 1}$, the ratio log-concavity of $\{P_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ and the sequence $\{A_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ of Apéry numbers, and the ratio log-convexity of $\{V_n\}_{n\geq 1}$.
Let $\{P_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ denote the Catalan-Larcombe-French sequence, which naturally came up from the series expansion of the complete elliptic integral of the first kind. In this paper, we prove the strict log-concavity of the sequence $\{\sqrt[n]{P_n}\}_{n\geq 1}$, which was originally conjectured by Sun. We also obtain the strict log-concavity of the sequence $\{\sqrt[n]{V_n}\}_{n\geq 1}$, where $\{V_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ is the Fennessey-Larcombe-French sequence arising in the series expansion of the complete elliptic integral of the second kind.
We consider $\ell$-log-momotonic sequences and Laguerre inequality of order two for sequences $\{a_n\}_{n \ge 0}$ such that \[ \frac{a_{n-1}a_{n+1}}{a_n^2} = 1 + \sum_{i=1}^m \frac{r_i(\log n)}{n^{α_i}} + o\left( \frac{1}{n^β} \right), \] where $m$ is a nonnegative integer, $α_i$ are real numbers, $r_i(x)$ are rational functions of $x$ and \[ 0 < α_1 < α_2 < \cdots < α_m < β. \] We will give a sufficient condition on $\ell$-log-momotonic sequences and Laguerre inequality of order two for $n$ sufficiently large. Many P-recursive sequences fall in this frame. At last, we will give a method to fi…
We formulate conditions on a set of log-concave sequences, under which any linear combination of those sequences is log-concave, and further, of conditions under which linear combinations of log-concave sequences that have been transformed by convolution are log-concave. These conditions involve relations on sequences called \textit{synchronicity} and \textit{ratio-dominance}, and a characterization of some bivariate sequences as \textit{lexicographic}. We are motivated by the 25-year old conjecture that the genus distribution of every graph is log-concave. Although calculating genus distribut…
We study the problem of constructing sequences $(x_n)_{n=1}^{\infty}$ on $[0,1]$ in such a way that $$ D_N^* = \sup_{0 \leq x \leq 1} \left| \frac{ \left\{1 \leq i \leq N: x_i \leq x \right\}}{N} - x \right|$$ is uniformly small. A result of Schmidt shows that necessarily $D_N^* \gtrsim (\log{N}) N^{-1}$ for infinitely many $N$ and there are several classical constructions attaining this growth. We describe a type of uniformly distributed sequence that seems to be completely novel: given $\left\{x_1, \dots, x_{N-1} \right\}$, we construct $x_N$ in a greedy manner $$ x_N = \arg\min_{\min_k |x-x…
Menon's proof of the preservation of log-concavity of sequences under convolution becomes simpler when adapted to 2-sided infinite sequences. Under assumption of log-concavity of two 2-sided infinite sequences, the existence of the convolution is characterised by a convergence criterion. Preservation of log-concavity under convolution yields a method of establishing the log-concavity of rows of a large class of Pascal type triangles, including a weighted generalization of the Delannoy triangle. This method is also compared with known techniques of proving log-concavity.
When $k$ is a constant at least $3$, a sequence $S$ of positive integers is called $k$-GP-free if it contains no nontrivial $k$-term geometric progressions. Beiglbök, Bergelson, Hindman and Strauss first studied the existence of a $ $$k$-GP-free sequence with bounded gaps. In a previous paper the author gave a partial answer to this question by constructing a $6$-GP-free sequence $S$ with gaps of size $O(\exp(6\log n/\log\log n))$. We generalize this problem to allow the gap function $k$ to grow to infinity, and ask: for which pairs of functions $(h,k)$ do there exist $k$-GP-free sequences wit…
In recent years, the log-concavity of $\{\sqrt[n]{S_n}\}_{n\geq 1}$ have been received a lot of attention. Very recently, Sun posed the following conjecture in his new book: the sequences $\{\sqrt[n]{a_n}\}_{n\geq 2}$ and $\{ \sqrt[n]{b_n}\}_{n\geq 1}$ are log-concave, where \[ a_n:= \frac{1}{n}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1} \frac{{n-1\choose k}^2{n+k\choose k}^2 }{4k^2-1} \] and \[ b_n:= \frac{1}{n^3}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1} (3k^2+3k+1){n-1\choose k}^2 {n+k\choose k}^2. \] In this paper, two methods, semi-automatic and analytic methods, are used to confirm Sun's conjecture. The semi-automatic method relies on a cr…
D. Uminsky and K. Yeats [6] studied the properties of the log- operator L on the subset of the finite symmetric sequences and prove the existence of an infinite region R, bounded by parametrically de- fined hypersurfaces such that any sequence corresponding a point of R is infinitely log concave. We study the properties of a new operator L_r and redefine the hypersurfaces which generalizes the one defined by Uminsky and Yeats [6]. We show that any sequence corresponding a point of the region R, bounded by the new generalized parametrically defined r-factor hypersurfaces, is Generalized r-facto…
In this paper, we present monotone sequences of lower and upper bounds on the Perron value of a nonngeative matrix, and we study their strict monotonicity. Using those sequences, we provide two combinatorial applications. One is to improve bounds on Perron values of rooted trees in combinatorial settings, in order to find characteristic sets of trees. The other is to generate log-concave and log-convex sequences through the monotone sequences.
We show that the sequence of moments of order less than 1 of averages of i.i.d. positive random variables is log-concave. For moments of order at least 1, we conjecture that the sequence is log-convex and show that this holds eventually for integer moments (after neglecting the first $p^2$ terms of the sequence).
In this paper, we present some criteria for the $2$-$q$-log-convexity and $3$-$q$-log-convexity of combinatorial sequences, which can be regarded as the first column of certain infinite triangular array $[A_{n,k}(q)]_{n,k\geq0}$ of polynomials in $q$ with nonnegative coefficients satisfying the recurrence relation $$A_{n,k}(q)=A_{n-1,k-1}(q)+g_k(q)A_{n-1,k}(q)+h_{k+1}(q)A_{n-1,k+1}(q).$$ Those criterions can also be presented by continued fractions and generating functions. These allow a unified treatment of the $2$-$q$-log-convexity of alternating Eulerian polynomials, $2$-log-convexity of Eu…
It was discovered recently by Griffin, Ono, Rolen and Zagier that the Jensen polynomials associated to many sequences have Hermite polynomial limits. We develop this theory in detail, based on the log-polynomial property which is a refinement of log-concavity and log-convexity. Applications to various partition sequences are given. An application to the sequence of factorials leads naturally to evaluating limits of generalized Laguerre polynomials.
Following Boros--Moll, a sequence $(a_n)$ is $m$-log-concave if $\mathcal{L}^j (a_n) \geq 0$ for all $j = 0, 1, \ldots, m$. Here, $\mathcal{L}$ is the operator defined by $\mathcal{L} (a_n) = a_n^2 - a_{n - 1} a_{n + 1}$. By a criterion of Craven--Csordas and McNamara--Sagan it is known that a sequence is $\infty$-log-concave if it satisfies the stronger inequality $a_k^2 \geq r a_{k - 1} a_{k + 1}$ for large enough $r$. On the other hand, a recent result of Brändén shows that $\infty$-log-concave sequences include sequences whose generating polynomial has only negative real roots. In this pap…

In this paper, we use the Riemann zeta function $ζ(x)$ and the Bessel zeta function $ζ_μ(x)$ to study the log-behavior of combinatorial sequences. We prove that $ζ(x)$ is log-convex for $x>1$. As a consequence, we deduce that the sequence $\{|B_{2n}|/(2n)!\}_{n\geq 1}$ is log-convex, where $B_n$ is the $n$-th Bernoulli number. We introduce the function $θ(x)=(2ζ(x)Γ(x+1))^{\frac{1}{x}}$, where $Γ(x)$ is the gamma function, and we show that $\log θ(x)$ is strictly increasing for $x\geq 6$. This confirms a conjecture of Sun stating that the sequence $\{\sqrt[n] {|B_{2n}}|\}_{n\geq 1}$ is strictl…
Schmidt proved in 2014 that if $\varepsilon>0$, almost all binary sequences of length $n$ have peak sidelobe level between $(\sqrt{2}-\varepsilon)\sqrt{n\log n}$ and $(\sqrt{2}+\varepsilon)\sqrt{n\log n}$. Because of the small gap between his upper and lower bounds, it is difficult to find improved upper bounds that hold for almost all binary sequences. In this note, we prove that if $\varepsilon>0$, then almost all binary sequences of length $n$ have peak sidelobe level at most $\sqrt{2n(\log n-(1-\varepsilon)\log\log n)}$, and we provide a slightly better upper bound that holds for a positiv…
We present an algorithm which computes the $D^{th}$ term of a sequence satisfying a linear recurrence relation of order $d$ over a field $K$ in $O( \mathsf{M}(\bar d)\log(D) + \mathsf{M}(d)\log(d))$ operations in $K$, where $\bar d \leq d$ is the degree of the squarefree part of the annihilating polynomial of the recurrence and $\mathsf{M}$ is the cost of polynomial multiplication in $K$. This is a refinement of the previously optimal result of $O( \mathsf{M}(d)\log(D) )$ operations, due to Fiduccia.
We answer a question of Calkin and Wilf concerning the maximal order of Stern's diatomic sequence. Specifically, we prove that $$\limsup_{n\to\infty}\frac{a(n)}{φ^{\log_2 n}}=\frac{φ^{\log_2 3}}{\sqrt{5}},$$ where $φ=(\sqrt{5}+1)/2$ is the golden ratio. This improves on previous results given by Berlekamp, Conway, and Guy, who showed that the limit value was bounded above by 1.25, and by Calkin and Wilf, who showed that the exact value was in the interval $[(φ/{\sqrt{5}})({3}/{2})^{\log_2φ},(φ+1)/{\sqrt{5}}].$
Horizontal and vertical generating functions and recursion relations have been investigated by Comtet for triangular double sequences. In this paper we investigate the horizontal and vertical log-concavity of triangular sequences assigned to polynomials which show up in combinatorics, number theory and physics. This includes Laguerre polynomials, the Pochhammer polynomials, the D'Arcais and Nekrasov--Okounkov polynomials.
Various authors, including McNew, Nathanson and O'Bryant, have recently studied the maximal asymptotic density of a geometric progression free sequence of positive integers. In this paper we prove the existence of geometric progression free sequences with small gaps, partially answering a question posed originally by Beiglböck et al. Using probabilistic methods we prove the existence of a sequence $T$ not containing any $6$-term geometric progressions such that for any $x\geq1$ and $\varepsilon>0$ the interval $[x,x+C_{\varepsilon}\exp((C+\varepsilon)\log x/\log\log x)]$ contains an element of…
An order-$s$ Davenport-Schinzel sequence over an $n$-letter alphabet is one avoiding immediate repetitions and alternating subsequences with length $s+2$. The main problem is to determine the maximum length of such a sequence, as a function of $n$ and $s$. When $s$ is fixed this problem has been settled but when $s$ is a function of $n$, very little is known about the extremal function $λ(s,n)$ of such sequences. In this paper we give a new recursive construction of Davenport-Schinzel sequences that is based on dense 0-1 matrices avoiding large all-1 submatrices (aka Zarankiewicz's Problem.) I…
