The q-Catalan numbers studied by Carlitz and Riordan are polynomials in q with nonnegative coefficients. They evaluate, at q=1, to the Catalan numbers: 1, 1, 2, 5, 14,..., a log-convex sequence. We use a combinatorial interpretation of these polynomials to prove a q-log-convexity result. The sequence of q-Catalan numbers is not q-log-convex in the narrow sense used by other authors, so our work suggests a more flexible definition of q-log convex be adopted.
The Catalan-Larcombe-French sequence $\{P_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ arises in a series expansion of the complete elliptic integral of the first kind. It has been proved that the sequence is log-balanced. In the paper, by exploring a criterion due to Chen and Xia for testing 2-log-convexity of a sequence satisfying three-term recurrence relation, we prove that the new sequence $\{P^2_n-P_{n-1}P_{n+1}\}_{n\geq 1}$ are strictly log-convex and hence the Catalan-Larcombe-French sequence is strictly 2-log-convex.
For a lower triangular matrix $(t_{n,k})$ we call the matrices with respective entries $(t_{2n-k,n})$ and $(t_{2n,n+k})$ the vertical and the horizontal halves. In this note, we discuss Riordan arrays whose halves are closely related to the Catalan matrices.
We show that the super Catalan numbers are special values of the Krawtchouk polynomials by deriving an expression for the super Catalan numbers in terms of a signed set.
We provide a context around a conjectured closed form for the Hankel transform of linear combinations of consecutive pairs of Catalan numbers. This generalizes the formula for the Hankel transforms of the shifted Catalan numbers and the known results for linear combinations of pairs of Catalan numbers. Many interesting number triangles emerge, some of which we analyze using the language of Riordan arrays.
Shuffles are n-multipermutations with suit multiplicities given by a subset R of {1,..,n-1}. Their inverses are ordered partitions of {1,..,n} whose block sizes derive from R. These "R-permutations" depict the min length coset reps for the quotient of S_n by the parabolic subgroup W_J, with J the complement of R. We refer to those that blockwise avoid the pattern 312 as "312-avoiding R-permutations" and define the "parabolic R-Catalan number" to be the number of them. Let lambda be a partition of N with at most n parts whose set of shape column lengths less than n is R. We show that the number…
In this note we show that various natural q-analogues of the Catalan numbers can be obtained in a uniform way. Furthermore we compute their Hankel determinants.
In this note, we present some basic properties of $q$-Fibonacci numbers and their relationship to the $q$-golden ratio and Catalan numbers. We then use this relationship to give a short proof of a combinatorial identity.
In this note, we study two generalizations of the Catalan numbers, namely the $s$-Catalan numbers and the spin $s$-Catalan numbers. These numbers first appeared in relation to quantum physics problems about spin multiplicities. We give a combinatorial description for these numbers in terms of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, and explain some of the properties they exhibit in terms of Littlewood-Richardson polynomials.
The aim of this note is to show how the introduction of certain tableaux, called Catalan alternative tableaux, provides a very simple and elegant description of the product in the Hopf algebra of binary trees defined by Loday and Ronco. Moreover, we use this description to introduce a new associative product on the space of binary trees.
In this note we introduce a determinant and then give its evaluating formula. The determinant turns out to be a generalization of the well-known ballot and Fuss-Catalan numbers, which is believed to be new. The evaluating formula is proved by showing that the determinant coincides with the number of lattice paths with (1,0), (0,1)-steps in the plane that stay below a boundary line of rational slope.
In this note we introduce several instructive examples of bijections found between several different combinatorially defined sequences of sets. Each sequence has cardinalities given by the Catalan numbers. Our results answer some questions posed by R. Stanley in the addendum to his textbook. We actually discuss two types of bijection, one defined recursively and the other defined in a more local, relative, fashion. It is interesting to compare the results of the two.
In this short note, we describe a problem in algebraic geometry where the solution involves Catalan numbers. More specifically, we consider the derived category of coherent sheaves on an elliptic surface, and the action of its autoequivalence group on its Bridgeland stability manifold. In solving an equation involving this group action, the generating function of Catalan numbers arises, allowing us to use asymptotic estimates of Catalan numbers to arrive at a bound for the solution set.
In this note, we provide a bijection between a new collection of words on nonnegative integers of length n and Dyck paths of length 2n-2, thus proving that this collection belongs to the Catalan family. The surprising key step in this bijection is the zeta map which is an important map in the study of q,t-Catalan numbers. Finally we discuss an alternative approach to this new collection of words using two statistics on planted trees that turn out to be closely related to the Tutte polynomial on the Catalan matroid.
We give a brief history of Catalan numbers, from their first discovery in the 18th century to modern times. This note will appear as an appendix in Richard Stanley's forthcoming book on Catalan numbers.
In this note we give explicitly a family of probability densities, the moments of which are Fuss-Catalan numbers. The densities appear naturally in random matrices, free probability and other contexts.
In this paper, we present some criteria for the $2$-$q$-log-convexity and $3$-$q$-log-convexity of combinatorial sequences, which can be regarded as the first column of certain infinite triangular array $[A_{n,k}(q)]_{n,k\geq0}$ of polynomials in $q$ with nonnegative coefficients satisfying the recurrence relation $$A_{n,k}(q)=A_{n-1,k-1}(q)+g_k(q)A_{n-1,k}(q)+h_{k+1}(q)A_{n-1,k+1}(q).$$ Those criterions can also be presented by continued fractions and generating functions. These allow a unified treatment of the $2$-$q$-log-convexity of alternating Eulerian polynomials, $2$-log-convexity of Eu…
Two interesting sequences arose in the study of the series expansions of the complete elliptic integrals, which are called the Catalan-Larcombe-French sequence $\{P_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ and the Fennessey-Larcombe-French sequence $\{V_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ respectively. In this paper, we prove the log-convexity of $\{V_n^2-V_{n-1}V_{n+1}\}_{n\geq 2}$ and $\{n!V_n\}_{n\geq 1}$, the ratio log-concavity of $\{P_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ and the sequence $\{A_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ of Apéry numbers, and the ratio log-convexity of $\{V_n\}_{n\geq 1}$.
Our main aim with these notes is to introduce the combinatorial and symmetric function tools that relate to the description of the Poincare polynomial of the triply graded Khovanov-Rozansky homology of torus links, a.k.a. the (reduced) superpolynomial of these links.
A jump system is defined as a set of integer points (vectors) with a certain exchange property, generalizing the concepts of matroids, delta-matroids, and base polyhedra of integral polymatroids (or submodular systems). A discrete convexity concept is defined for functions on constant-parity jump systems and it has been used in graph theory and algebra. In this paper we call it "jump M-convexity" and extend it to "jump M-natural-convexity" for functions defined on a larger class of jump systems. By definition, every jump M-convex function is a jump M-natural-convex function, and we show the eq…
In this note, we derive an alternative recursive formula for the sums of powers of integers involving the Stirling numbers of the first kind. As a remarkable by-product, we provide a non-recursive definition of the Catalan numbers.
The d-dimensional Catalan numbers form a well-known sequence of numbers which count balanced bracket expressions over an alphabet of size d. In this paper, we introduce and study what we call d-dimensional prime Catalan numbers, a sequence of numbers which count only a very specific subset of indecomposable balanced bracket expressions. We further introduce the notion of a trapezoidal diagram of a crossing-free geometric graph, such as a triangulation or a crossing-free perfect matching. In essence, such a diagram is obtained by augmenting the geometric graph in question with its trapezoidal d…
In this note, we provide bijective proofs of some identities involving the Bell number, as previously requested. Our arguments may be extended to yield a generalization in terms of complete Bell polynomials. We also provide a further interpretation for a related difference of Catalan numbers in terms of the inclusion-exclusion principle.
A sequence $\{z_n\}_{n\geq0}$ is called ratio log-convex in the sense that the ratio sequence $\{\frac{z_{n+1}}{z_n}\}_{n\geq0}$ is log-convex. Based on a three-term recurrence for sequences, we develop techniques for dealing with the ratio log-convexity of ratio sequences. As applications, we prove that the ratio sequences of numbers, including the derangement numbers, the Motzkin numbers, the Fine numbers, Franel numbers and the Domb numbers are ratio log-convex, respectively. Finally, we not only prove that the sequence of derangement numbers is asymptotically infinitely log-monotonic, but …
In this note, we explore certain determinantal descriptions of the Robbins numbers. Techniques used for this include continued fractions, Riordan arrays and series inversion. Proven and conjectured representations involve the determinants of both Hankel and symmetric matrices. In specific cases, links are drawn to centered polygonal numbers, and to heptagons and nonagons. We conjecture a Hankel transform determinant for the Robbins numbers related to the Fibonacci and the Catalan numbers.
In this note we use the analogy between the Catalan sequence and the Rueppel sequence to derive a variety of conjectures surrounding the Hankel transforms of a number of sequences closely related to the Rueppel sequence. Use is made of the representation of suitable generating functions by Stieltjes continued fractions. We define polynomial sequences by introducing parameters that define generalized Rueppel sequences, and we show that such polynomials have coefficient arrays that are Riordan arrays. Finally we conjecture the form of a product of Hankel transforms arising from the Rueppel seque…
In this note, we explore two families of sequences associated to a suitable integer sequence: the gap-sum sequence and the gap-product sequence. These are the sums and the products of consecutive numbers not in the original sequence. We give closed forms for both, in terms of the original sequence, and in the case of Horadam sequences, we find the generating function of the gap-sum sequence. For some elementary sequences, we indicate that the gap-product sequences are given by the Fuss-Catalan-Raney numbers.
