In this work we consider periodic spherically symmetric metrics of constant positive scalar curvature on the n-dimensional cylinder called pseudo-cylindric metrics. These metrics belong to the conformal class $[g_0]$ of the Riemannian product $S^1\times S^{n-1}$ : a circle of length $T$ crossed with the (n-1)-dimensional standard sphere. Such metrics have a harmonic Riemannian curvature and a non parallel Ricci tensor, except for the cylindric one. Thus, it appears a natural link between them and the Derdzinski metrics which are warped product and classify a family of Riemannian manifolds. These two families actually differ by conformal transformations. Moreover, we are interested in the multiplicity problem of the pseudo-cylindric metrics in $[g_0]$. We also study the existence problem and the number of the Derdzinski metrics. Furthermore, we prove that the pseudo-cylindric metrics may be expressed in terms of elliptic functions for the dimension $n = 3,4$ and 6 only, and in terms of automorphic functions for any other dimension. This fact allows us to give new bounds for global estimates. Finally, we examine the curvature of the asymptotic pseudo-cylindric metrics which are complete singular Yamabe metrics on the standard sphere punctured of $k$ points. We show that any of such (non trivial) metric has a non parallel Ricci tensor.
We construct Ricci flat Kahler metrics with cone singularities along a complex hypersurface. This construction is inspired in part by R. Mazzeo's program in the case of negative Einstein constant, and uses the linear theory developed recently by S. Donaldson.
In this paper, we construct smooth forward Ricci flow evolutions of singular initial metrics resulting from rotationally symmetric neckpinches on S^(n+1), without performing an intervening surgery. In the restrictive context of rotational symmetry, this construction gives evidence in favor of Perelman's hope for a "canonically defined Ricci flow through singularities".
In this paper we prove a conjecture by Feldman-Ilmanen-Knopf in \cite{FIK} that the gradient shrinking soliton metric they constructed on the tautological line bundle over $\CP^1$ is the uniform limit of blow-ups of a type I Ricci flow singularity on a closed manifold. We use this result to show that limits of blow-ups of Ricci flow singularities on closed four dimensional manifolds do not necessarily have non-negative Ricci curvature.
In this paper we discuss Perelman's Lambda-functional, Perelman's Ricci shrinker entropy as well as the Ricci expander entropy on a class of manifolds with isolated conical singularities. On such manifolds, a singular Ricci de Turck flow preserving the isolated conical singularities exists by our previous work. We prove that the entropies are monotone along the singular Ricci de Turck flow. We employ these entropies to show that in the singular setting, Ricci solitons are gradient and that steady or expanding Ricci solitons are Einstein.
We verify a conjecture of Perelman, which states that there exists a canonical Ricci flow through singularities starting from an arbitrary compact Riemannian 3-manifold. Our main result is a uniqueness theorem for such flows, which, together with an earlier existence theorem of Lott and the second named author, implies Perelman's conjecture. We also show that this flow through singularities depends continuously on its initial condition and that it may be obtained as a limit of Ricci flows with surgery. Our results have applications to the study of diffeomorphism groups of three manifolds --- i…
We extend the notion of what it means for a complete Ricci flow to have a given initial metric, and consider the resulting well-posedness issues that arise in the 2D case. On one hand we construct examples of nonuniqueness by showing that surfaces with cusps can evolve either by keeping the cusps or by contracting them. On the other hand, by adding a noncollapsedness assumption for the initial metric, we establish a uniqueness result.
We give an estimate on the lower bound of the first non-zero eigenvalue of the Laplacian for a closed Riemannian manifold with positive Ricci curvature in terms of the in-diameter and the lower bound of the Ricci curvature.
We study integral and pointwise bounds on the curvature of gradient shrinking Ricci solitons. As applications we discuss gap and compactness results for gradient shrinkers.
In previous work, Angenent, Isenberg, and Knopf created type-II Ricci flow neckpinch singularities. In this paper we construct solutions to Ricci flow whose initial data is the singular metric resulting from these singularities. We show in particular that the curvature decreases at the same rate at which it blew up. This is the first example of Ricci flow starting from a type-II singularity.
We investigate Riemannian (non-Kahler) Ricci flow solutions that develop finite-time Type-I singularities and present evidence in favor of a conjecture that parabolic rescalings at the singularities converge to singularity models that are shrinking Kahler-Ricci solitons. Specifically, the singularity model for these solutions is expected to be the "blowdown soliton" discovered in [FIK03]. Our partial results support the conjecture that the blowdown soliton is stable under Ricci flow, as well as the conjectured stability of the subspace of Kahler metrics under Ricci flow.
In this short note we show that non-negative Ricci curvature is not preserved under Ricci flow for closed manifolds of dimensions four and above, strengthening a previous result of Knopf in \cite{K} for complete non-compact manifolds of bounded curvature. This brings down to four dimensions a similar result Böhm and Wilking have for dimensions twelve and above, \cite{BW}. Moreover, the manifolds constructed here are \Kahler manifolds and relate to a question raised by Xiuxiong Chen in \cite{XC}, \cite{XCL}.
In this paper we study the long time existence of the Ricci-harmonic flow in terms of scalar curvature and Weyl tensor which extends Cao's result \cite{Cao2011} in the Ricci flow. In dimension four, we also study the integral bound of the "Riemann curvature" for the Ricci-harmonic flow generalizing a recently result of Simon \cite{Simon2015}.
We give new estimates on the lower bounds for the first closed or Neumann eigenvalue for a compact manifold with positive Ricci curvature in terms of the diameter and the lower bound of Ricci curvature. The results improve the previous estimates.
We prove that the Ricci flow that contracts a hyperbolic cusp has curvature decay like one over time squared. In order to do this, we prove a new Li-Yau type differential Harnack inequality for Ricci flow on surfaces.
We give a new estimate on the lower bound for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue for a compact manifold with positive Ricci curvature in terms of the in-diameter and the lower bound of the Ricci curvature. The result improves the previous estimates.
In each dimension $N\geq 3$ and for each real number $λ\geq 1$, we construct a family of complete rotationally symmetric solutions to Ricci flow on $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ which encounter a global singularity at a finite time $T$. The singularity forms arbitrarily slowly with the curvature blowing up arbitrarily fast at the rate $(T-t)^{-(λ+1)}$. Near the origin, blow-ups of such a solution converge uniformly to the Bryant soliton. Near spatial infinity, blow-ups of such a solution converge uniformly to the shrinking cylinder soliton. As an application of this result, we prove that there exist standa…
In this paper, we firstly establish an Interpolating curvature invariance between the well known nonnegative and 2-non-negative curvature invariant along the Ricci flow. Then a related strong maximum principle for the $(λ_1, λ_2)$-nonnegativity is also derived along Ricci flow. Based on these, finally we obtain a rigidity property of manifolds with $(λ_1,λ_2)$-nonnegative curvature operators.
In this paper we derive Cheng-Yau, Li-Yau, Hamilton estimates for Riemannian manifolds with Bakry-Emery Ricci curvature bounded from below, and also global and local upper bounds, in terms of Bakry-Emery Ricci curvature, for the Hessian of positive and bounded solutions of the weighted heat equation on a closed Riemannian manifold.
We use Colding--Minicozzi lamination theory to study the systole of large genus minimal surfaces in an ambient three-manifold of positive Ricci curvature.
Along the line of the Yang Conjecture, we give a new estimate on the lower bound of the first non-zero eigenvalue of a closed Riemannian manifold with negative lower bound of Ricci curvature in terms of the in-diameter and the lower bound of Ricci curvature.
In this paper we analyze the behavior of the distance function under Ricci flows whose scalar curvature is uniformly bounded. We will show that on small time-intervals the distance function is $\frac12$-Hölder continuous in a uniform sense. This implies that the distance function can be extended continuously up to the singular time.
We prove that for a solution $(M^n,g(t))$, $t\in[0,T)$, where $T<\infty$, to the Ricci flow with bounded curvature on a complete non-compact Riemannian manifold with the Ricci curvature tensor uniformly bounded by some constant $C$ on $M^n\times [0,T)$, the curvature tensor stays uniformly bounded on $M^n\times [0,T)$. Some other results are also presented.
In this paper, we study the (normalized) Ricci flow on surfaces with conical singularities. Long time existence is proved for cone angle smaller than $2π$. In this case, convergence results are obtained if the Euler number is nonpositive.
We establish the existence of the K"ahler-Ricci flow on projective varieties with log canonical singularities. This generalizes some of the existence results of Song-Tian \cite{ST3} in case of projective varieties with klt singularities. We also prove that the normalized K"ahler-Ricci flow will converge to the \ka-Einstein metric with negative Ricci curvature on semi-log canonical models in the sense of currents. Finally we also construct K"ahler-Ricci flow solutions performing divisorial contractions and flips with log canonical singularities.
In this article, we consider the Angenent-Caputo-Knopf's Ricci Flow through neckpinch singularities. We will explain how one can see the A-C-K's Ricci flow through a neckpinch singularity as a flow of integral current spaces. We then prove the continuity of this weak flow with respect to the Sormani-Wenger Intrinsic Flat (SWIF) distance.
In this paper, we study the singularities of two extended Ricci flow systems --- connection Ricci flow and Ricci harmonic flow using newly-defined curvature quantities. Specifically, we give the definition of three types of singularities and their corresponding singularity models, and then prove the convergence. In addition, for Ricci harmonic flow, we use the monotonicity of functional $ν_α$ to show the connection between finite-time singularity and shrinking Ricci harmonic soliton. At last, we explore the property of ancient solutions for Ricci harmonic flow.
We prove an existence theorem for Asymptotically Conical Ricci Flat Kahler metrics in $\mathbb{C}^2$ with cone singularities along a smooth complex curve. These metrics are expected to arise as blow up limits of non collapsed sequences of Kahler Einstein metrics with cone singularities.
This paper studies the normalized Ricci flow on surfaces with conical singularities. It's proved that the normalized Ricci flow has a solution for a short time for initial metrics with conical singularities. Moreover, the solution makes good geometric sense. For some simple surfaces of this kind, for example, the tear drop and the football, it's shown that they admit Ricci soliton metric.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of the weak Kahler-Ricci flow on projective varieties with log terminal singularities. It is also shown that the weak Kahler-Ricci flow can be uniquely continued through divisorial contractions and flips if they exist. We then propose an analytic version of the Minimal Model Program with Ricci flow.
In this paper, we first derive a pinching estimate on the traceless Ricci curvature in term of scalar curvature and Weyl tensor under the Ricci flow. Then we apply this estimate to study finite-time singularity behavior. We show that if the scalar curvature is uniformly bounded, then the Weyl tensor has to blow up, as a consequence, the corresponding singularity model must be Ricci flat with non-vanishing Weyl tensor.
In this paper we establish stability of the Ricci de Turck flow near Ricci-flat metrics with isolated conical singularities. More precisely, we construct a Ricci de Turck flow which starts sufficiently close to a Ricci-flat metric with isolated conical singularities and converges to a singular Ricci-flat metric under an assumption of integrability, linear and tangential stability. We provide a characterization of conical singularities satisfying tangential stability and discuss examples where the integrability condition is satisfied.
In dimension $n=3$, there is a complete theory of weak solutions of Ricci flow - the singular Ricci flows introduced by Kleiner and Lott - which are unique across singularities, as was proved by Bamler and Kleiner. We show that uniqueness should not be expected to hold for Ricci flow weak solutions in dimensions $n\geq5$. Specifically, we exhibit a discrete family of asymptotically conical gradient shrinking solitons, each of which admits non-unique forward continuations by gradient expanding solitons. (v2) We recast the Main Theorem in the language of Kleiner and Lott's Ricci Flow spacetimes …
We prove the existence of Ricci flow starting from a class of metrics with unbounded curvature, which are doubly-warped products over an interval with a spherical factor pinched off at an end. These provide a forward evolution from some known and conjectured finite-time local singularities of Ricci flow, generalizing previous examples. The class also includes metrics with non-compact singular ends which become instantaneously compact. Furthermore, we prove local stability of the forward evolution, which allows us to glue it to other manifolds and create a forward evolution from spaces which ar…
Assuming a lower bound on the Ricci curvature of a complete Riemannian manifold, for $p< 1/2$ we show the existence of bounds on the local $L^p$ norm of the Ricci curvature that depend only on the dimension and which improve with volume collapse.
Let N_0 = C^2/H be an isolated quotient singularity with H in U (2) a finite subgroup. We show that for any Q-Gorenstein smoothings of N_0 a nearby fiber admits ALE Ricci-flat Kahler metrics in any Kahler class. Moreover, we generalize Kronheimer's results on hyperkahler 4-manifolds, by giving an explicit classification of the ALE Ricci-flat Kahler surfaces. We construct ALF Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on the above non-simply connected manifolds. These provide new examples of ALF Ricci-flat Kahler 4-manifolds, with cubic volume growth and cyclic fundamental group at infinity.
For all complex dimensions n>=2, we construct complete Kaehler manifolds of bounded curvature and non-negative Ricci curvature whose Kaehler--Ricci evolutions immediately acquire Ricci curvature of mixed sign.
Let $D$ be a smooth divisor in a compact complex manifold $X$ and let $β\in (0,1)$. We show that in any positive co-homology class on $X$ there is a Kähler metric with cone angle $2πβ$ along $D$ which has bounded Ricci curvature. We use this result together with the Aubin-Yau continuity method to give an alternative proof of a well-known existence theorem for Kahler-Einstein metrics with cone singularities.
In 2011 Enders, Müller and Topping showed that any blow up sequence of a Type I Ricci flow near a singular point converges to a non-trivial gradient Ricci soliton, leading them to conclude that for such flows all reasonable definitions of singular points agree with each other. We prove the analogous result for the harmonic Ricci flow, generalizing in particular results of Guo, Huang and Phong and Shi. In order to obtain our result, we develop refined compactness theorems, a new pseudolocality theorem, and a notion of reduced length and volume based at the singular time for the harmonic Ricci f…
In this paper, we prove that expanding gradient Ricci solitons with (positively) pinched Ricci curvature are trivial ones. Namely, they are either compact or flat.
In this paper, we study the Ricci flow on a closed manifold of dimension $n \ge 4$ and finite time interval $[0,T)~(T < \infty)$ on which the scalar curvature are uniformly bounded. We prove that if such flow of dimension $4 \le n \le 7$ has finite time singularities, then every blow-up sequence of a locally Type I singularity has certain property. Here, locally Type I singularity is what Buzano and Di-Matteo defined.
We extend the concept of singular Ricci flow by Kleiner and Lott from 3d compact manifolds to 3d complete manifolds with possibly unbounded curvature. As an application of the generalized singular Ricci flow, we show that for any 3d complete Riemannian manifold with non-negative Ricci curvature, there exists a smooth Ricci flow starting from it.
We show that in dimension 4 and above, the lifespan of Ricci flows depends on the relative smallness of the Ricci curvature compared to the Riemann curvature on the initial manifold. We can generalize this lifespan estimate to the local Ricci flow, using which we prove the short-time existence of Ricci flow solutions on noncompact Riemannian manifolds with at most quadratic curvature growth, whose Ricci curvature and its first two derivatives are sufficiently small in regions where the Riemann curvature is large. Those Ricci flow solutions may have unbounded curvature. Moreover, our method imp…
In this paper, we give a delay estimate of scalar curvature for a complete non-compact expanding (or steady) gradient Ricci soliton with nonnegative Ricci curvature. As an application, we prove that any complete non-compact expanding (or steady) gradient Kähler-Ricci solitons with positively pinched Ricci curvature should be Ricci flat. The result answers a question in case of Kähler-Ricci solitons proposed by Chow, Lu and Ni in a book.
We prove that Perelman's ancient ovals occur as blowup limit in 3d Ricci flow through singularities if and only if there is an accumulation of spherical singularities.
We study blow-ups around fixed points at Type I singularities of the Ricci flow on closed manifolds using Perelman's W-functional. First, we give an alternative proof of the result obtained by Naber and Enders-Müller-Topping that blow-up limits are non-flat gradient shrinking Ricci solitons. Our second and main result relates a limit W-density at a Type I singular point to the entropy of the limit gradient shrinking soliton obtained by blowing-up at this point. In particular, we show that no entropy is lost at infinity during the blow-up process.
There are two primary goals to this paper. In the first part of the paper we study smooth metric measure spaces (M^n,g,e^{-f}dv_g) and give several ways of characterizing bounds -Kg\leq \Ric+\nabla^2f\leq Kg on the Ricci curvature of the manifold. In particular, we see how bounded Ricci curvature on M controls the analysis of path space P(M) in a manner analogous to how lower Ricci curvature controls the analysis on M. In the second part of the paper we develop the analytic tools needed to in order to use these new characterizations to give a definition of bounded Ricci curvature on general me…
The notion of the Ricci curvature is defined for sprays on a manifold. With a volume form on a manifold, every spray can be deformed to a projective spray. The Ricci curvature of a projective spray is called the projective Ricci curvature. In this paper, we introduce the notion of projectively Ricci-flat sprays. We establish a global rigidity result for projectively Ricci-flat sprays with nonnegative Ricci curvature. Then we study and characterize projectively Ricci-flat Randers metrics.
We show that a Ricci flow in four dimensions can develop singularities modeled on the Eguchi-Hanson space. In particular, we prove that starting from a class of asymptotically cylindrical $U(2)$-invariant initial metrics on $TS^2$, a Type II singularity modeled on the Eguchi-Hanson space develops in finite time. Furthermore, we show that for these Ricci flows the only possible blow-up limits are (i) the Eguchi-Hanson space, (ii) the flat $\mathbb{R}^4 /\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold, (iii) the 4d Bryant soliton quotiented by $\mathbb{Z}_2$, and (iv) the shrinking cylinder $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}…
