In this paper we present a version of the general polynomial involutive algorithm for computing Janet bases specialized to toric ideals. The relevant data structures are Janet trees which provide a very fast search for a Janet divisor. We broach also efficiency issues in view of application of the algorithm presented to computation of toric ideals.
We have introduced the Janet's algorithm for the Stanley decomposition of a monomial ideal I in a polynomial ring S = K[x_1,...,x_n] and prove that Janet's algorithm gives the squarefree Stanley decomposition of S/I for a squarefree monomial ideal I. We have also shown that the Janet's algorithm gives a partition of a simplicial complex.
Given two toric ideals $I_1,I_2\subset\si$, it is not always true that $I_1+I_2$ is a toric ideal. Given $I_1,...,I_k\subset\si$ a familly of toric ideals we give necessary conditions in order to have that $I_1+...+I_k$ is a toric ideal.
The classical involutive division theory by Janet decomposes in the same way both the ideal and the escalier. The aim of this paper, following Janet's approach, is to discuss the combinatorial properties of involutive divisions, when defined on the set of all terms in a fixed degree D, postponing the discussion of ideal membership and related test. We adapt the theory by Gerdt and Blinkov, introducing relative involutive divisions and then, given a complete description of the combinatorial structure of a relative involutive division, we turn our attention to the problem of membership. In order…
Every normal toric ideal of codimension two is minimally generated by a Grobner basis with squarefree initial monomials. A polynomial time algorithm is presented for checking whether a toric ideal of fixed codimension is normal.
A simple formula computing the multiplier ideal of a monomial ideal on an arbitrary affine toric variety is given. Variants for the multiplier module and test ideals are also treated.
We use cellular resolutions of monomial ideals to prove an analog of Hilbert's syzygy theorem for virtual resolutions of monomial ideals on smooth toric varieties.
Directed Gaussian graphical models are statistical models that use a directed acyclic graph (DAG) to represent the conditional independence structures between a set of jointly normal random variables. The DAG specifies the model through recursive factorization of the parametrization, via restricted conditional distributions. In this paper, we make an attempt to characterize the DAGs whose vanishing ideals are toric ideals. In particular, we give some combinatorial criteria to construct such DAGs from smaller DAGs which have toric vanishing ideals. An associated monomial map called the shortest…
We prove that the defining ideal of a sufficiently high Veronese subring of a toric algebra admits a quadratic Gröbner basis consisting of binomials. More generally, we prove that the defining ideal of a sufficiently high Veronese subring of a standard graded ring admits a quadratic Gröbner basis. We give a lower bound on $d$ such that the defining ideal of $d$-th Veronese subring admits a quadratic Gröbner basis. Eisenbud--Reeves--Totaro stated the same theorem without a proof with some lower bound on $d$. In many cases, our lower bound is less than Eisenbud--Reeves--Totaro's lower bound.
We provide a formula to compute the big Cohen-Macaulay test ideal for triples $((R,Δ),\mathfrak{a}^{t})$ where $R$ is a mixed characteristic toric ring and $\mathfrak{a}$ is a monomial ideal. Of particular interest is that this result is consistent with the formulas for test ideals in positive characteristic and multiplier ideals in characteristic zero.
In this paper, we study a class of toric ideals obtained by using some geometric data of ADE trees which are the minimal resolution graphs of rational surface singularities. We compute explicit Gröbner bases for these toric ideals that are also minimal generating sets consisting of large number of binomials of degree $\leq 4$. In particular, they give rise to squarefree initial ideals as well.
We construct a 3-dimensional complete intersection toric variety on which the subadditivity formula doesn't hold, answering negatively a question by Takagi and Watanabe. A combinatorial proof of the subadditivity formula on 2-dimensional normal toric varieties is also provided.
The toric ideal of a $d$-dimensional flow polytope has an initial ideal generated by square-free monomials of degree at most $d$. The toric ideal of a flow polytope of dimension at most four has an initial ideal generated by square-free monomials of degree at most two, with the only exception of the four-dimensional Birkhoff polytope, whose toric ideal has an initial ideal generated by a square-free cubic monomial. The proof is based on a method to classify certain compressed flow polytopes, and a construction of a quadratic pulling triangulation of them. Along the way compressed flow polytope…
For all integers $4 \leq r \leq d$, we show that there exists a finite simple graph $G= G_{r,d}$ with toric ideal $I_G \subset R$ such that $R/I_G$ has (Castelnuovo-Mumford) regularity $r$ and $h$-polynomial of degree $d$. To achieve this goal, we identify a family of graphs such that the graded Betti numbers of the associated toric ideal agree with its initial ideal, and furthermore, this initial ideal has linear quotients. As a corollary, we can recover a result of Hibi, Higashitani, Kimura, and O'Keefe that compares the depth and dimension of toric ideals of graphs.
In this paper we study some algebraic and combinatorial behaviors of expansion functor. We show that on monomial ideals some properties like polymatroidalness, weakly polymatroidalness and having linear quotients are preserved under taking the expansion functor. The main part of the paper is devoted to study of toric ideals associated to the expansion of subsets of monomials which are minimal with respect to divisibility. It is shown that, for a given discrete polymatroid $P$, if toric ideal of $P$ is generated by double swaps then toric ideal of any expansion of $P$ has such a property. This …
We present examples which show that in dimension higher than one or codimension higher than two, there exist toric ideals I_A such that no binomial ideal contained in I_A and of the same dimension is a complete intersection. This result has important implications in sparse elimination theory and in the study of the Horn system of partial differential equations.
We introduce the notion of Betti category for graded modules over suitably graded polynomial rings, and more generally for modules over certain small categories. Our categorical approach allows us to treat simultaneously many important cases, such as monomial ideals and toric rings. We prove that in these cases the Betti category is a finite combinatorial object that completely determines the structure of the minimal free resolution. For monomial ideals, the Betti category is the same as the Betti poset that we studied in a previous article. We describe in detail and with examples how the theo…
Previously, Ohsugi and Hibi gave a combinatorial description of bipartite graphs $G$ whose toric edge ideal $I_G$ is generated by quadrics, showing that every cycle of $G$ of length at least $6$ must have a chord. This corresponds to the Green-Lazarsfeld condition $\mathbf{N}_1$. In this paper, we investigate the higher syzygies of $I_G$ and give combinatorial descriptions of the Green-Lazarsfeld conditions $\mathbf{N}_p$ of toric edge ideals of bipartite graphs for all $p \ge 1$. In particular, we show that $I_G$ is linearly presented (i.e. satisfies condition $\mathbf{N}_2$) if and only if t…
Let $I_{G} \subset K[x_{1},...,x_{m}]$ be the toric ideal associated to a finite graph $G$. In this paper we study the binomial arithmetical rank and the $G$-homogeneous arithmetical rank of $I_G$ in 2 cases: $G$ is bipartite, $I_G$ is generated by quadratic binomials. In both cases we prove that the binomial arithmetical rank and the $G$-arithmetical rank coincide with the minimal number of generators of $I_G$.
This article concerns monomial ideals fixed by differential operators of affine semi-group rings over $\mathbb{C}$. We give a complete characterization of when this happens. Perhaps surprisingly, every monomial ideal is fixed by an infinite set of homogeneous differential operators and is in fact determined by them. This opens up a new tool for studying monomial ideals. We explore applications of this to (mixed) multiplier ideals and other variants as well as give examples of detecting ideal membership in integrally closed powers and symbolic powers of squarefree monomial ideals.
Let I be the toric ideal defined by a 2 x n matrix of integers, A = ((1 1 ... 1)(a_1 a_2 ... a_n)) with a_1<a_2<...<a_n. We give a combinatorial proof that I is generated by elements of degree at most the sum of the two largest differences a_i - a_(i-1). The novelty is in the method of proof: the result has already been shown by L'vovsky using cohomological arguments.
Assume that $X$ is an affine toric variety of characteristic $p > 0$. Let $Δ$ be an effective toric $Q$-divisor such that $K_X+Δ$ is $Q$-Cartier with index not divisible by $p$ and let $ϕ_Δ:F^e_* O_X \to O_X$ be the toric map corresponding to $Δ$. We identify all ideals $I$ of $O_X$ with $ϕ_Δ(F^e_* I)=I$ combinatorially and also in terms of a log resolution (giving us a version of these ideals which can be defined in characteristic zero). Moreover, given a toric ideal $\ba$, we identify all ideals $I$ fixed by the Cartier algebra generated by $ϕ_Δ$ and $\ba$; this answers a question by Manuel …
We characterize the graphs $G$ for which their toric ideals $I_G$ are complete intersections. In particular we prove that for a connected graph $G$ such that $I_G$ is complete intersection all of its blocks are bipartite except of at most two. We prove that toric ideals of graphs which are complete intersections are circuit ideals. The generators of the toric ideal correspond to even cycles of $G$ except of at most one generator, which corresponds to two edge disjoint odd cycles joint at a vertex or with a path. We prove that the blocks of the graph satisfy the odd cycle condition. Finally we …
The toric fiber product is an operation that combines two ideals that are homogeneous with respect to a grading by an affine monoid. The Segre product is a related construction that combines two multigraded rings. The quotient ring by a toric fiber product of two ideals is a subring of the Segre product, but in general this inclusion is strict. We contrast the two constructions and show that any Segre product can be presented as a toric fiber product without changing the involved quotient rings. This allows to apply previous results about toric fiber products to the study of Segre products. We…
A central question in liaison theory asks whether every Cohen-Macaulay, graded ideal of a standard graded K-algebra belongs to the same G-liaison class of a complete intersection. In this paper we answer this question positively for toric ideals defining edge subrings of bipartite graphs.
To every toric ideal one can associate an oriented matroid structure, consisting of a graph and another toric ideal, called bouquet ideal. The connected components of this graph are called bouquets. Bouquets are of three types; free, mixed and non mixed. We prove that the cardinality of the following sets - the set of indispensable elements, minimal Markov bases, the Universal Markov basis and the Universal Gröbner basis of a toric ideal - depends only on the type of the bouquets and the bouquet ideal. These results enable us to introduce the strongly robustness simplicial complex and show tha…
Associated to any graph is a toric ideal whose generators record relations among the cuts of the graph. We study these ideals and the geometry of the corresponding toric varieties. Our theorems and conjectures relate the combinatorial structure of the graph and the corresponding cut polytope to algebraic properties of the ideal. Cut ideals generalize toric ideals arising in phylogenetics and the study of contingency tables.
In this paper, we discuss the toric ideals of Minkowski sums of unit simplices. More precisely, we prove that the toric ideal of Minkowski sum of unit simplices has a squarefree initial ideal and is generated by quadratic binomials. Moreover, we also prove that Minkowski sums of unit simplices have the integer decomposition property. Those results are a partial contribution to Oda conjecture and Bøgvad conjecture.
Describing minimal generating set of a toric ideal is a well-studied and difficult problem. In 1980 White conjectured that the toric ideal associated to a matroid is equal to the ideal generated by quadratic binomials corresponding to symmetric exchanges. We prove White's conjecture up to saturation, that is that the saturations of both ideals are equal. In the language of algebraic geometry this means that both ideals define the same projective scheme. Additionally we prove the full conjecture for strongly base orderable matroids.
We call an ideal in a polynomial ring robust if it can be minimally generated by a universal Gröbner basis. In this paper we show that robust toric ideals generated by quadrics are essentially determinantal. We then discuss two possible generalizations to higher degree, providing a tight classification for determinantal ideals, and a counterexample to a natural extension for Lawrence ideals. We close with a discussion of robustness of higher Betti numbers.
In this paper, we study toric ideals generated by circuits. For toric ideals which have squarefree quadratic initial ideals, a sufficient condition to be generated by circuits is given. In particular, squarefree Veronese subrings, the second Veronese subrings and configurations arising from root systems satisfy the condition. In addition, we study toric ideals of finite graphs and characterize the graphs whose toric ideals are generated by circuits u -v such that either u or v is squarefree. There exists several classes of graphs whose toric ideals satisfy this condition and whose toric rings …
Let K be a finite field and let X be a subset of a projective space, over the field K, which is parameterized by monomials arising from the edges of a clutter. We show some estimates for the degree-complexity, with respect to the revlex order, of the vanishing ideal I(X) of X. If the clutter is uniform, we classify the complete intersection property of I(X) using linear algebra. We show an upper bound for the minimum distance of certain parameterized linear codes along with certain estimates for the algebraic invariants of I(X).
In $1980$ White conjectured that every element of the toric ideal of a matroid is generated by quadratic binomials corresponding to symmetric exchanges. We prove White's conjecture for high degrees with respect to the rank. This extends our result arXiv:1302.5236 confirming White's conjecture `up to saturation'. Furthermore, we study degrees of Gröbner bases and Betti tables of the toric ideals of matroids of a fixed rank.
The slack ideal of a polytope is a saturated determinantal ideal that gives rise to a new model for the realization space of the polytope. The simplest slack ideals are toric and have connections to projectively unique polytopes. We prove that if a projectively unique polytope has a toric slack ideal, then it is the toric ideal of the bipartite graph of vertex-facet non-incidences of the polytope. The slack ideal of a polytope is contained in this toric ideal if and only if the polytope is morally 2-level, a generalization of the 2-level property in polytopes. We show that polytopes that do no…
Let $G$ be a finite simple graph. We give a lower bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the toric ideal $I_G$ associated to $G$ in terms of the sizes and number of induced complete bipartite graphs in $G$. When $G$ is a chordal bipartite graph, we find an upper bound for the regularity of $I_G$ in terms of the size of the bipartition of $G$. We also give a new proof for the graded Betti numbers of the toric ideal associated to the complete bipartite graph $K_{2,n}$.
Let G be a finite simple graph. In this paper we will show that the binomial edge ideal of G, JG is toric if and only if each connected component of G is complete and in this case it is the sum of toric ideal associated to bipartite complete graphs.
The toric ring together with the toric ideal arising from a nested configuration is studied, with particular attention given to the algebraic study of normality of the toric ring as well as the Gröbner bases of the toric ideal. One of the combinatorial applications of these algebraic findings leads to insights on smooth $3 \times 3$ transportation polytopes.
Bounds for the maximal degree of certain Gröbner bases of simplicial toric ideals are given. These bounds are close to the bound stated in Eisenbud-Goto's Conjecture on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity.
A cut ideal of a graph was introduced by Sturmfels and Sullivant. In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for toric rings associated to the cut ideal to be Strongly Koszul.
Given a vertex-weighted oriented graph, we can associate to it a set of monomials. We consider the toric ideal whose defining map is given by these monomials. We find a generating set for the toric ideal for certain classes of graphs which depends on the combinatorial structure and weights of the graph. We provide a result which is analogous to the unweighted, unoriented graph case, to show that when the associated simple graph has only trivial even closed walks, the toric ideal is the zero ideal. Moreover, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the toric ideal of a weighted oriented …
It is shown that up to dimension four, the toric ideal of a quiver polytope is generated in degree two, with the only exception of the four-dimensional Birkhoff polytope. As a consequence, Bøgvad's conjecture holds for quiver polytopes of dimension at most four. In arbitrary dimension, the toric ideal of a compressed polytope is generated in degree two if the polytope has no neighbouring singular vertices. Furthermore, the toric ideal of a compressed polytope with at most one singular vertex has a quadratic Gröbner basis.
We generalize the Bernstein-Sato polynomials of Budur, Mustata and Saito to ideals in normal semigroup rings. In the case of monomial ideals, we also relate the roots of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial to the jumping coefficients of the corresponding multiplier ideals. In order to prove the latter result, we obtain a new combinatorial description for the multiplier ideals of a monomial ideal in a normal semigroup ring.
Bounds for the maximum degree of a minimal Gröbner basis of simplicial toric ideals with respect to the reverse lexicographic order are given. These bounds are close to the bound stated in Eisenbud-Goto's Conjecture on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity.
We investigate the computational complexity of problems on toric ideals such as normal forms, Gröbner bases, and Graver bases. We show that all these problems are strongly NP-hard in the general case. Nonetheless, we can derive efficient algorithms by taking advantage of the sparsity pattern of the matrix. We describe this sparsity pattern with a graph, and study the parameterized complexity of toric ideals in terms of graph parameters such as treewidth and treedepth. In particular, we show that the normal form problem can be solved in parameter-tractable time in terms of the treedepth. An imp…
The universal Gröbner basis of $I$, is a Gröbner basis for $I$ with respect to all term orders simultaneously. Let $I_G$ be the toric ideal of a graph $G$. We characterize in graph theoretical terms the elements of the universal Gröbner basis of the toric ideal $I_G$. We provide a bound for the degree of the binomials in the universal Gröbner basis of the toric ideal of a graph. Finally we give a family of examples of circuits for which their true degrees are less than the degrees of some elements of the Graver basis.
An ideal I is robust if its universal Gröbner basis is a minimal generating set for this ideal. In this paper, we generalize the meaning of robust ideals. An ideal is defined as generalized robust if its universal Gröbner basis is equal to its universal Markov basis. This article consists of two parts. In the first one, we study the generalized robustness on toric ideals of a graph G. We prove that a toric graph ideal is generalized robust if and only if its universal Markov basis is equal to the Graver basis of the ideal. Furthermore, we give a graph theoretical characterization of generalize…
Monomial ideals and toric rings are closely related. By consider a Grobner basis we can always associated to any ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring a monomial ideal ${\rm in}_\prec I$, in some special situations the monomial ideal ${\rm in}_\prec I$ is square free. On the other hand given any monomial ideal $I$ of a polynomial ring $S$, we can define the toric $K[I]\subset S$. In this paper we will study toric rings defined by Segre embeddings, we will prove that their $h-$ vectors coincides with the so called Simon Newcomb number's in probabilities and combinatorics. We solve the original questio…
A homogeneous ideal is robust if its universal Gröbner basis is also a minimal generating set. For toric ideals, one has the stronger definition: A toric ideal is strongly robust if its Graver basis equals the set of indispensable binomials. We characterize the codimension 2 strongly robust toric ideals by their Gale diagrams. This gives a positive answer to a question of Petrovic, Thoma, and Vladoiu in the case of codimension 2 toric ideals.
Let $I_G$ be the toric ideal of a graph $G$. We characterize in graph theoretical terms the primitive, the minimal, the indispensable and the fundamental binomials of the toric ideal $I_G$.
