For a homological functor from a triangulated category to an abelian category satisfying some technical assumptions we construct a tower of interpolation categories. These are categories over which the functor factorizes and which capture more and more information according to the injective dimension of the images of the functor. The categories are obtained by proving the existence of truncated versions of resolution or $E_2$-model structures. Examples of functors fitting in our framework are given by every generalized homology theory represented by a ring spectrum satisfying the Adams-Atiyah condition. The constructions are closely related to the modified Adams spectral sequence and give a very conceptual approach to the associated moduli problem and obstruction theory. As application we establish an isomorphism between certain E(n)-local Picard groups and some Ext-groups.
We define a topological Hochschild (THH) and cyclic (TC) homology theory for differential graded (dg) categories and construct several non-trivial natural transformations from algebraic K-theory to THH(-). In an intermediate step, we prove that the homotopy theory of dg categories is Quillen equivalent, through a four step zig-zag of Quillen equivalences, to the homotopy theory of Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectral categories. Finally, we show that over the rationals two dg categories are topological equivalent if and only if they are quasi-equivalent.
In this article we develop the cotangent complex and (co)homology theories for spectral categories. Along the way, we reproduce standard model structures on spectral categories. As applications, we show that the invariants to descend to stable $\infty$-categories and we prove a stabilization result for spectral categories.
By considering labeled configurations of ``bounded multiplicity'', one can construct a functor that fits between homology and stable homotopy. Based on previous work, we are able to give an equivalent description of this labeled construction in terms of loop space functors and symmetric products. This yields a direct generalization of the May-Milgram model for iterated loop spaces, and answers questions of Carlsson and Milgram posed in the handbook. We give a classifying space formulation of our results hence extending an older result of Segal. We finally relate our labeled construction to a t…
We prove a conjecture of Hesselholt and Ausoni-Rognes, establishing localization cofiber sequences of spectra for THH(ku) and TC(ku). These sequences support Hesselholt's view of the map l to ku as a "tamely ramified" extension of ring spectra, and validate the hypotheses necessary for Ausoni's simplified computation of V(1)_* K(KU). In order to make sense of the relative term THH(ku|KU) in the cofiber sequence and prove these results, we develop a theory of THH and TC of Waldhausen categories and prove the analogues of Waldhausen's theorems for K-theory. We resolve the longstanding confusion …
In this paper, we extend a result of Lafont and M{é}tayer and prove that the polygraphic homology of a small category, defined in terms of polygraphic resolutions in the category $ω$Cat of strict $ω$-categories, is naturally isomorphic to the homology of its nerve. Along the way, we prove some results on homotopy colimits with respect to the Folk model structure and deduce a theorem which formally resembles Quillen's Theorem A.
Magnitude is a numerical invariant of enriched categories, including in particular metric spaces as $[0,\infty)$-enriched categories. We show that in many cases magnitude can be categorified to a homology theory for enriched categories, which we call magnitude homology (in fact, it is a special sort of Hochschild homology), whose graded Euler characteristic is the magnitude. Magnitude homology of metric spaces generalizes the Hepworth--Willerton magnitude homology of graphs, and detects geometric information such as convexity.
Using factorization homology techniques, we give a simple proof of the action of Kontsevich and Soibelman operad on the pair consisting of Hochschild cohomology and Hochschild homology. The proof obviously extends to higher Hochschild cohomology and factorization (also called chiral) homology. Note that our result works in categories of chain complexes but also in categories of modules over a commutative ring spectrum.
In this dissertation, we compare the "classical" homology of an $ω$-category (defined as the homology of its Street nerve) with its polygraphic homology. More precisely, we prove that both homologies generally do not coincide and call homologically coherent the particular strict $ω$-categories for which polygraphic homology and homology of the nerve do coincide. The goal pursued is to find abstract and concrete criteria to detect homologically coherent $ω$-categories. For example, we prove that all (small) categories, considered as strict $ω$-categories with unit cells above dimension 1, are h…
Working in a semi-abelian context, we use Janelidze's theory of generalised satellites to study universal properties of the Everaert long exact homology sequence. This results in a new definition of homology which does not depend on the existence of projective objects. We explore the relations with other notions of homology, and thus prove a version of the higher Hopf formulae. We also work out some examples.
A lot of well-known functors such as group homology, cyclic homology of algebras can be described as limits of certain simply defined functors over categories of presentations. In this paper, we develop technique for the description of the higher limits over categories of presentations and show that certain homological functors can be described in this way. In particular, we give a description of Hochschild homology and the derived functors of tensor, symmetric and exterior powers in the sense of Dold and Puppe as higher limits.
We introduce cohomology and homology theories for small categories with general coefficient systems from simplex categories first studied by Thomason. These theories generalize at once Baues-Wirsching cohomology and homology and other more classical theories. We analyze naturality and functoriality properties of these theories and construct associated spectral sequences for functors between small categories.
These are notes from an informal mini-course on factorization homology, infinity-categories, and topological field theories. The target audience was imagined to be graduate students who are not homotopy theorists.
We uncover several general phenomenas governing functor homology over additive categories. In particular, we generalize the strong comparison theorem of Franjou Friedlander Scorichenko and Suslin to the setting of Fp-linear additive categories. Our results have a strong impact in terms of explicit computations of functor homology, and they open the way to new applications to stable homology of groups or to K-theory. As an illustration, we prove comparison theorems between cohomologies of classical algebraic groups over infinite perfect fields, in the spirit of a celebrated result of Cline, Par…
We construct spectral sequences in the framework of Baues-Wirsching cohomology and homology for functors between small categories and analyze particular cases including Grothendieck fibrations. We also give applications to more classical cohomology and homology theories including Hochschild-Mitchell cohomology and those studied before by Watts, Roos, Quillen and others.
Let $M$ be an exact symplectic manifold with contact type boundary such that $c_1(M)=0$. In this paper we show that the cyclic cohomology of the Fukaya category of $M$ has the structure of an involutive Lie bialgebra. Inspired by a work of Cieliebak-Latschev we show that there is a Lie bialgebra homomorphism from the linearized contact homology of $M$ to the cyclic cohomology of the Fukaya category. Our study is also motivated by string topology and 2-dimensional topological conformal field theory.
In our paper "On D-module of categories I", we provide two different methods of constructing D-module structures on the complex computing periodic cyclic homology associated to a family of stable infinity categories. One is based on a canonical extension of factorization homology. Another method uses the pair of Hochschild cohomology and Hochschild homology, Kodaira-Spencer map for a family of stable infinity categories, Koszul dualities, and the relation between dg Lie algebras and pointed formal stacks. In this paper, we prove that two resulting structures coindice.
We give a new proof of the recent Künneth theorem for periodic topological cyclic homology (TP) of smooth and proper dg categories over perfect fields of characteristic p>0 due to Blumberg and Mandell. Our result is slightly stronger and implies a finiteness theorem for topological cyclic homology (TC) of such categories.
Let $A$ be either a simplicial complex $K$ or a small category $\mathcal C$ with $V(A)$ as its set of vertices or objects. We define a twisted structure on $A$ with coefficients in a simplicial group $G$ as a function $$ δ\colon V(A)\longrightarrow \operatorname{End}(G), \quad v\mapsto δ_v $$ such that $δ_v\circ δ_w=δ_w\circ δ_v$ if there exists an edge in $A$ joining $v$ with $w$ or an arrow either from $v$ to $w$ or from $w$ to $v$. We give a canonical construction of twisted simplicial group as well as twisted homology for $A$ with a given twisted structure. Also we determine the homotopy t…
We construct a pairing, which we call factorization homology, between framed manifolds and higher categories. The essential geometric notion is that of a vari-framing of a stratified manifold, which is a framing on each stratum together with a coherent system of compatibilities of framings along links between strata. Our main result constructs labeling systems on disk-stratified vari-framed $n$-manifolds from $(\infty,n)$-categories. These $(\infty,n)$-categories, in contrast with the literature to date, are not required to have adjoints. This allows the following conceptual definition: the fa…
Extending constructions by Gabriel and Zisman, we develop a functorial framework for the cohomology and homology of simplicial sets with very general coefficient systems given by functors on simplex categories into abelian categories. Furthermore we construct Leray type spectral sequences for any map of simplicial sets. We also show that these constructions generalise and unify the various existing versions of cohomology and homology of small categories and as a bonus provide new insight into their functoriality.
This paper aims to answer the following question: Given an adjunction between two categories, how is Quillen (co)homology in one category related to that in the other? We identify the induced comparison diagram, giving necessary and sufficient conditions for it to arise, and describe the various comparison maps. Examples are given. Along the way, we clarify some categorical assumptions underlying Quillen (co)homology: cocomplete categories with a set of small projective generators provide a convenient setup.
We study in this article stable homology of automorphism groups of free groups with coefficients twisted by a poynomial functor. We show that this homology is zero for a reduced covariant polynomial functor. For a reduced contravariant functor, we compute the first homology group, which is in general non zero. Our methods relie on the use of functor categories. ---On étudie dans cet article l'homologie stable des groupes d'automorphismes des groupes libres à coefficients tordus par un foncteur polynomial. On montre que cette homologie est nulle pour un foncteur polynomial covariant réduit. Dan…
The strict globular $ω$-categories formalize the execution paths of a parallel automaton and the homotopies between them. One associates to such (and any) $ω$-category $\C$ three homology theories. The first one is called the globular homology. It contains the oriented loops of $\C$. The two other ones are called the negative (resp. positive) corner homology. They contain in a certain manner the branching areas of execution paths or negative corners (resp. the merging areas of execution paths or positive corners) of $\C$. Two natural linear maps called the negative (resp. the positive) Hurewic…
We give in this paper an isomorphism theorem between derived functors over categories of modules. There is a nice class of categories that gives examples in which this theorem applies for a special construction. This leads us to a new interpretation of a theorem of Pirashvili and Richter about cyclic homology and Hochschild homology.
In this note some recent developments in the study of homology in semi-abelian categories are briefly presented. In particular the role of protoadditive functors in the study of Hopf formulae for homology is explained.
We prove that topological Hochschild homology (THH) arises from a presheaf of circles on a certain combinatorial category, which gives a universal construction of THH for any enriched infinity category. Our results rely crucially on an elementary, model-independent framework for enriched higher category theory, which may be of independent interest.
Every homology or cohomology theory on a category of E-infinity ring spectra is Topological Andre-Quillen homology or cohomology with appropriate coefficients. Analogous results hold for the category of A-infinity ring spectra and for categories of algebras over many other operads.
Given a suitable functor T:C -> D between model categories, we define a long exact sequence relating the homotopy groups of any X in C with those of TX, and use this to describe an obstruction theory for lifting an object G in D to C. Examples include finding spaces with given homology or homotopy groups.
Let A be a dg category, F:A->A a dg functor inducing an equivalence of categories in degree-zero cohomology, and A/F the associated dg orbit category. For every A1-homotopy invariant (e.g. homotopy K-theory, K-theory with coefficients, etale K-theory and periodic cyclic homology), we construct a distinguished triangle expressing E(A/F) as the cone of the endomorphism E(F)-Id of E(A). In the particular case where F is the identity dg functor, this triangle splits and gives rise to the fundamental theorem. As a first application, we compute the A1-homotopy invariants of cluster (dg) categories, …
We show that a triangulated motivic category admits categorical Thom isomorphisms for vector bundles with an additional structure if and only if the generalized motivic cohomology theory represented by the tensor unit object admits Thom classes. We also show that the stable $\mathbb{A}^1$-derived category does not admit Thom isomorphisms for oriented vector bundles and, more generally, for symplectic bundles. In order to do so we compute the first homology sheaves of the motivic sphere spectrum and show that the class in the coefficient ring of $\mathbb{A}^1$-homology corresponding to the seco…
Let A be a DGA over a field and X a module over H_*(A). Fix an $A_\infty$-structure on H_*(A) making it quasi-isomorphic to A. We construct an equivalence of categories between A_{n+1}-module structures on X and length n Postnikov systems in the derived category of A-modules based on the bar resolution of X. This implies that quasi-isomorphism classes of A_n-structures on X are in bijective correspondence with weak equivalence classes of rigidifications of the first n terms of the bar resolution of X to a complex of A-modules. The above equivalences of categories are compatible for different v…
In this paper, we deal with stable homology computations with twisted coefficients for mapping class groups of surfaces and of 3-manifolds, automorphism groups of free groups with boundaries and automorphism groups of certain right-angled Artin groups. On the one hand, the computations are led using semidirect product structures arising naturally from these groups. On the other hand, we compute the stable homology with twisted coefficients by FI-modules. This notably uses a decomposition result of the stable homology with twisted coefficients for pre-braided monoidal categories proved in this …
Smooth and proper dg-algebras have an Euler class valued in the Hochschild homology of the algebra. This Euler class is worthy of this name since it satisfies many familiar properties including compatibility with the familiar pairing on the Hochschild homology of the algebra and that of its opposite. This compatibility is the Riemann-Roch theorems of Shklyarov and Petit. In this paper we prove a broad generalization of these Riemann-Roch theorems. We generalize from the bicategory of dg-algebras and their bimodules to monoidal bicategories and from Euler class to traces of non identity maps. O…
A quandle is an algebraic structure which attempts to generalize group conjugation. These structures have been studied extensively due to their connections with knot theory, algebraic combinatorics, and other fields. In this work, we approach the study of quandles from the perspective of the representation theory of categories. Namely, we look at collections of conjugacy classes of the symmetric groups and the finite general linear groups, and prove that they carry the structure of FI-quandles (resp. VIC$(q)$-quandles). As applications, we prove statements about the homology of these quandles,…
In this paper, we provide a conceptual new construction of the algebraic structure on the pair of the Hochschild cohomology spectrum (cochain complex) and Hochschild homology spectrum, which is analogous to the structure of calculus on a manifold. This algebraic structure is encoded by a two-colored operad introduced by Kontsevich and Soibelman. We prove that for a stable idempotent-complete infinity-category, the pair of its Hochschild cohomology and homology spectra naturally admits the structure of algebra over the operad. Moreover, we prove a generalization to the equivariant context.
Motivated by spectral gluing patterns in the Betti Langlands program, we show that for any reductive group $G$, a parabolic subgroup $P$, and a topological surface $M$, the (enhanced) spectral Eisenstein series category of $M$ is the factorization homology over $M$ of the $\mathrm{E}_2$-Hecke category $\mathrm{H}_{G, P} = \mathrm{IndCoh}(\mathrm{LS}_{G, P}(D^2, S^1))$, where $\mathrm{LS}_{G, P}(D^2, S^1)$ denotes the moduli stack of $G$-local systems on a disk together with a $P$-reduction on the boundary circle. More generally, for any pair of stacks $\mathcal{Y}\to \mathcal{Z}$ satisfying so…
In this paper, we discuss two topics: first, we show how to convert 1+1-topological quantum field theories valued in symmetric bimonoidal categories into stable homotopical data, using a machinery by Elmendorf and Mandell. Then, we discuss, in this framework, two recent results (independent of each other) on refinements of Khovanov homology: our refinement into a module over the connective k-theory spectrum and a stronger result by Lipshitz and Sarkar refining Khovanov homology into a stable homotopy type.
