We show that if a knot admits a prime, twist-reduced diagram with at least 4 twist regions and at least 6 crossings per twist region, then every non-trivial Dehn filling of that knot is hyperbolike. A similar statement holds for links. We prove this using two arguments, one geometric and one combinatorial. The combinatorial argument further implies that every link with at least 2 twist regions and at least 6 crossings per twist region is hyperbolic and gives a lower bound for the genus of a link.
This paper concerns the truly or purely cosmetic surgery conjecture. We give a survey on exceptional surgeries and cosmetic surgeries. We prove that the slope of an exceptional truly cosmetic surgery on a hyperbolic knot in $S^3$ must be $\pm 1$ and the surgery must be toroidal but not Seifert fibred. As consequence we show that there are no exceptional truly cosmetic surgeries on certain types of hyperbolic knot in $S^3$. We also give some properties of Heegaard Floer correction terms and torsion invariants for exceptional cosmetic surgeries on $S^3$.
We will classify all exceptional Dehn surgeries on 2-bridge knots according to whether they produce reducible, toroidal, or small Seifert fibered manifolds.
We prove two conjectures of C. Gordon. We show that the maximal number of exceptional Dehn surgeries on a 1-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold is 10, and that the maximal intersection number between exceptional slopes is 8. The proof uses a combination of new geometric techniques and a rigorous computer-assisted calculation.
A knot in the 3-sphere is called an L--space knot if it admits a nontrivial Dehn surgery yielding an L--space. Like torus knots and Berge knots, many L--space knots admit also a Seifert fibered surgery. We give a concrete example of a hyperbolic, L-space knot which has no exceptional surgeries, in particular, no Seifert fibered surgeries.
The cosmetic surgery conjecture is a longstanding conjecture in 3-manifold theory. We present a theorem about exceptional cosmetic surgery for homology spheres. Along the way we prove that if the surgery is not a small seifert $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-homology sphere or a toroidal irreducible non-Seifert surgery then there is at most one pair of exceptional truly cosmetic slope. We also prove that toroidal truly cosmetic surgeries on integer homology spheres must be integer homology spheres.
We give a complete description of exceptional surgeries on pretzel knots of type $(-2, p, p)$ with $p \ge 5$. It is known that such a knot admits a unique toroidal surgery yielding a toroidal manifold with a unique incompressible torus. By cutting along the torus, we obtain two connected components, one of which is a twisted $I$-bundle over the Klein bottle. We show that the other is homeomorphic to the one obtained by certain Dehn filling on the magic manifold. On the other hand, we show that all such pretzel knots admit no Seifert fibered surgeries.
This paper provides two obstructions to small knot complements in $S^3$ admitting hidden symmetries. The first obstruction is being cyclically commensurable with another knot complement. This result provides a partial answer to a conjecture of Boileau, Boyer, Cebanu, and Walsh. We also provide a second obstruction to admitting hidden symmetries in the case where a small knot complement covers a manifold admitting some symmetry and at least two exceptional surgeries.
We determine the asymptotic behavior of the higher dimensional Reidemeister torsion for the graph manifolds obtained by exceptional surgeries along twist knots. We show that all irreducible SL(2;C)-representations of the graph manifold are induced by irreducible metabelian representations of the twist knot group. We also give the set of the limits of the leading coefficients in the higher dimensional Reidemeister torsion explicitly.
We survey aspects of classical combinatorial sutured manifold theory and show how they can be adapted to study exceptional Dehn fillings and 2-handle additions. As a consequence we show that if a hyperbolic knot $β$ in a compact, orientable, hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ has the property that winding number and wrapping number are not equal with respect to a non-trivial class in $H_2(M,\boundary M)$, then, with only a few possible exceptions, every 3-manifold $M'$ obtained by Dehn surgery on $β$ with surgery distance $Δ\geq 2$ will be hyperbolic.
We show that the distance of a link $K$ with respect to a bridge surface of any genus determines a lower bound on the genus of essential surfaces and Heegaard surfaces in the manifolds that result from non-trivial Dehn surgeries on the knot. In particular, knots with high bridge distance do not admit non-trivial non-hyperbolic surgeries or non-trivial cosmetic surgeries. We further show that if a knot has bridge distance at least 3 then its bridge number is bounded above by a function of Seifert genus, or indeed by the genus of (almost) any essential surface or Heegaard surface in the surgered…
Myers shows that every compact, connected, orientable $3$--manifold with no $2$--sphere boundary components contains a hyperbolic knot. We use work of Ikeda with an observation of Adams-Reid to show that every $3$--manifold subject to the above conditions contains a hyperbolic knot which admits a non-trivial non-hyperbolic surgery, a toroidal surgery in particular. We conclude with a question and a conjecture about reducible surgeries.
Baker showed that 10 of the 12 classes of Berge knots are obtained by surgery on the minimally twisted 5-chain link. In this article we enumerate all hyperbolic knots in S^3 obtained by surgery on the minimally twisted 5 chain link that realize the maximal known distances between slopes corresponding to exceptional (lens, lens), (lens, toroidal), (lens, Seifert fibred spaces) pairs. In light of Baker's work, the classification in this paper conjecturally accounts for 'most' hyperbolic knots in S^3 realizing the maximal distance between these exceptional pairs. All examples obtained in our clas…
Exceptional Dehn surgeries have been classified for 2-bridge knots and Montesinos knots of length at least 4. In this paper we classify all toroidal Dehn surgeries on Montesinos knots of length 3.
We examine questions about surgery on links which arise naturally from the trisection decomposition of 4-manifolds developed by Gay and Kirby. These links lie on Heegaard surfaces in $\#^j S^1 \times S^2$ and have surgeries yielding $\#^k S^1 \times S^2$. We describe families of links which have such surgeries. One can ask whether all links with such surgeries lie in these families; the answer is almost certainly no. We nevertheless give a small piece of evidence in favor of a positive answer.
We determine the Dehn surgeries on 2-bridge links, which yield reducible 3-manifolds. Further, we show the conditions that we obtain a torus or cable knot from one component of a 2-bridge link by a surgery on another component.
An $L$-space link is a link in $S^3$ on which all large surgeries are $L$-spaces. In this paper, we initiate a general study of the definitions, properties, and examples of $L$-space links. In particular, we find many hyperbolic $L$-space links, including some chain links and two-bridge links; from them, we obtain many hyperbolic $L$-spaces by integral surgeries, including the Weeks manifold. We give bounds on the ranks of the link Floer homology of $L$-space links and on the coefficients in the multi-variable Alexander polynomials. We also describe the Floer homology of surgeries on any $L$-s…
In this paper, we analyze L-space surgeries on two component L-space links. We show that if one surgery coefficient is negative for the L-space surgery, then the corresponding link component is an unknot. If the link admits very negative (i.e. $d_{1}, d_{2}\ll0$) L-space surgeries, it is the Hopf link. We also give a way to characterize the torus link $T(2, 2l)$ by observing an L-space surgery $S^{3}_{d_{1}, d_{2}}(\mathcal{L})$ with $d_{1}d_{2}<0$ on a 2-component L-space link with unknotted components. For some 2-component L-space links, we give explicit descriptions of the L-space surgery s…
We determine lens surgeries (i.e.\ Dehn surgery yielding a lens space) along the $n$-twisted Whitehead link. To do so, we first give necessary conditions to yield a lens space from the Alexander polynomial of the link as: (1) $n=1$ (i.e. the Whitehead link), and (2) one of surgery coefficients is 1, 2 or 3. Our interests are not only lens surgery itself but also how to apply the Alexander polynomial for this kind of problems.
We characterize cutting arcs on fiber surfaces that produce new fiber surfaces, and the changes in monodromy resulting from such cuts. As a corollary, we characterize band surgeries between fibered links and introduce an operation called Generalized Hopf banding. We further characterize generalized crossing changes between fibered links, and the resulting changes in monodromy.
An L-space link is a link in $S^3$ on which all sufficiently large integral surgeries are L-spaces. We prove that for m, n relatively prime, the r-component cable link $K_{rm,rn}$ is an L-space link if and only if K is an L-space knot and $n/m \geq 2g(K)-1$. We also compute HFL-minus and HFL-hat of an L-space cable link in terms of its Alexander polynomial. As an application, we confirm a conjecture of Licata regarding the structure of HFL-hat for (n,n) torus links.
We show a spectral sequence for the rational Khovanov homology of an oriented link in terms of the rational Khovanov complexes and homologies of the link surgeries along an admissible cut. As a non trivial corollary, we give an explicit splitting formula for the Jones polynomial.
We give an $O(p^{2})$ time algorithm to compute the generalized Heegaard Floer complexes $A_{s_{1},s_{2}}^{-}(\overrightarrow{L})$'s for a two-bridge link $\overrightarrow{L}=b(p,q)$ by using nice diagrams. Using the link surgery formula of Manolescu-Ozsváth, we also show that ${\bf HF}^{-}$ and their $d$-invariants of all integer surgeries on two-bridge links are determined by $A_{s_{1},s_{2}}^{-}(\overrightarrow{L})$'s. We obtain a polynomial time algorithm to compute ${\bf HF}^{-}$ of all the surgeries on two-bridge links, with $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ coefficients. In addition, we calculat…
We apply a spherical CR Dehn surgery theorem in order to obtain infinitely many Dehn surgeries of the Whitehead link complement that carry spherical CR structures. We consider as starting point the spherical CR uniformization of the Whitehead link complement constructed by Parker and Will, using a Ford domain in the complex hyperbolic plane $\mathbb{H}^2_{\mathbb{C}}$. We deform the Ford domain of Parker and Will in $\mathbb{H}^2_{\mathbb{C}}$ in a one parameter family. On the one side, we obtain infinitely many spherical CR uniformizations on a particular Dehn surgery on one of the cusps of t…
For a hyperbolic knot in the 3-sphere, at most finitely many Dehn surgeries yield non-hyperbolic 3-manifolds. As a typical case of such an exceptional surgery, a toroidal surgery is one that yields a closed 3-manifold containing an incompressible torus. The slope corresponding to a toroidal surgery, called a toroidal slope, is known to be integral or half-integral. We show that the distance between two integral toroidal slopes for a hyperbolic knot, except the figure-eight knot, is at most four. Hence any hyperbolic knot admits at most 5 toroidal surgeries.
Let $M_λ$ be the $λ$-component Milnor link. For $λ\ge 3$, we determine completely when a finite slope surgery along $M_λ$ yields a lens space including $S^3$ and $S^1\times S^2$, where {\it finite slope surgery} implies that a surgery coefficient of every component is not $\infty$. For $λ=3$ (i.e.\ the Borromean rings), there are three infinite sequences of finite slope surgeries yielding lens spaces. For $λ\ge 4$, any finite slope surgery does not yield a lens space. As a corollary, $M_λ$ for $λ\ge 3$ does not yield both $S^3$ and $S^1\times S^2$ by any finite slope surgery. We generalize the…
We study lens space surgeries along two different families of 2-component links, denoted by $A_{m,n}$ and $B_{p,q}$, related with the rational homology 4-ball used in J.\ Park's (generalized) rational blow down. We determine which coefficient $r$ of the knotted component of the link yields a lens space by Dehn surgery. The link $A_{m,n}$ yields a lens space only by the known surgery with $r=mn$ and unexpectedly with $r=7$ for $(m,n)=(2,3)$. On the other hand, $B_{p,q}$ yields a lens space by infinitely many $r$. Our main tool for the proof is the Reidemeister-Turaev torsions, i.e.\ Reidemeiste…
It has been observed that most manifolds in the Callahan-Hildebrand-Weeks census of cusped hyperbolic $3$-manifolds are obtained by surgery on the minimally twisted 5-chain link. A full classification of the exceptional surgeries on the 5-chain link has recently been completed. In this article, we provide a complete classification of the sets of exceptional slopes and fillings for all cusped hyperbolic surgeries on the minimally twisted 5-chain link, thereby describing the sets of exceptional slopes and fillings for most hyperbolic manifolds of small complexity. The classification produces the…
We summarize and expand known connections between the study of Dehn surgery on links and the study of trisections of closed, smooth 4-manifolds. In addition, we describe how the potential counterexamples to the Generalized Property R Conjecture given by Gompf, Scharlemann, and Thompson yield genus four trisections of the standard four-sphere that are unlikely to be standard. Finally, we give an analog of the Casson- Gordon Rectangle Condition for trisections that can be used to obstruct reducibility of a given trisection.
Exceptional Dehn surgeries on arborescent knots have been classified except for Seifert fibered surgeries on Montesinos knots of length 3. There are infinitely many of them as it is known that 4n+6 and 4n+7 surgeries on a (-2, 3, 2n+1) pretzel knot are Seifert fibered. It will be shown that there are only finitely many others. A list of 20 surgeries will be given and proved to be Seifert fibered. We conjecture that this is a complete list.
A Seifert surgery is an integral surgery on a knot in S^3 producing a Seifert fiber space which may contain an exceptional fiber of index 0. The Seifert Surgery Network is a 1-dimensional complex whose vertices correspond to Seifert surgeries; its edges correspond to single twistings along "seiferters" or "annular pairs of seiferters". One problem of the network is whether there is a path from each vertex to a vertex on a torus knot, the most basic Seifert surgery. We give a method to find seiferters and annular pairs of seiferters for Seifert surgeries obtained by taking two--fold branched co…
A rational homology sphere whose Heegaard Floer homology is the same as that of a lens space is called an L-space. We classify pretzel knots with any number of tangles which admit L-space surgeries. This rests on Gabai's classification of fibered pretzel links.
In this paper, we study contact surgeries along Legendrian links in the standard contact 3-sphere. On one hand, we use algebraic methods to prove the vanishing of the contact Ozsváth-Szabó invariant for contact $(+1)$-surgery along certain Legendrian two-component links. The main tool is a link surgery formula for Heegaard Floer homology developed by Manolescu and Ozsváth. On the other hand, we use contact-geometric argument to show the overtwistedness of the contact 3-manifolds obtained by contact $(+1)$-surgeries along Legendrian two-component links whose two components are linked in some sp…
Let $K\subset S^3$ be a hyperbolic fibered knot such that $S^3_{p/q}(K)$, the $\frac pq$--surgery on $K$, is non-hyperbolic. We prove that if the monodromy of $K$ is right-veering, then $0\le\frac pq\le 4g(K)$. The upper bound $4g(K)$ cannot be attained if $S^3_{p/q}(K)$ is a small Seifert fibered L-space. If the monodromy of $K$ is neither right-veering nor left-veering, then $|q|\le3$. As a corollary, for any given positive torus knot $T$, if $p/q\ge4g(T)+4$, then $p/q$ is a characterizing slope. This improves earlier bounds of Ni--Zhang and McCoy. We also prove that some finite/cyclic slope…
It it known that the set of L-space surgeries on a nontrivial L-space knot is always bounded from below. However, already for two-component torus links the set of L-space surgeries might be unbounded from below. For algebraic two-component links we provide three complete characterizations for the boundedness from below: one in terms of the $h$-function, one in terms of the Alexander polynomial, and one in terms of the embedded resolution graph. They show that the set of L-space surgeries is bounded from below for most algebraic links. In fact, the used property of the $h$-function is a suffici…
Given an $n$-component link $L$ in any 3-manifold $M$, the space $\mathcal{L} \subset (\mathbb{Q}\cup \mkern-1.5mu\{\infty\})^n$ of rational surgery slopes yielding L-spaces is already fully characterized (in joint work by the author) when $n\!=\!1$ and $\mathcal{L}$ is nontrivial. For $n\mkern-2mu>\mkern-3mu1$, however, there are no previous results for $\mathcal{L}$ as a rational subspace, and only limited results for integer surgeries $\mathcal{L}\cap\mathbb{Z}^n$ on $S^3\mkern-2mu$. Herein, we provide the first nontrivial explicit descriptions of $\mathcal{L}$ for rational surgeries on mul…
It is shown that any closed three-manifold M obtained by integral surgery on a knot in the three-sphere can always be constructed from integral surgeries on a 3-component link L with each component being an unknot in the three-sphere. It is also interesting to notice that infinitely many different integral surgeries on the same link L could give the same three-manifold M.
We complete the classification of hyperbolic pretzel knots admitting Seifert fibered surgeries. This is the final step in understanding all exceptional surgeries on hyperbolic pretzel knots. We also present results toward similar classifications for non-pretzel Montesinos knots of length three.
We apply results from both contact topology and exceptional surgery theory to study when Legendrian surgery on a knot yields a reducible manifold. As an application, we show that a reducible surgery on a non-cabled positive knot of genus g must have slope 2g-1, leading to a proof of the cabling conjecture for positive knots of genus 2. Our techniques also produce bounds on the maximum Thurston-Bennequin numbers of cables.
We show that a closed orientable 3-manifold M admits an action of Z_p with fixed point set S^1 iff M can be obtained as the result of surgery on a p-periodic framed link L and Z_p acts freely on the components of L. We prove a similar theorem for free Z_p-actions. As an interesting application, we prove the following, rather unexpected result: for any M as above and for any odd prime p, H_1(M, Z_p)\ne Z_p. We also prove a similar criterion of 2-periodicity for rational homology 3-spheres.

In arXiv:1611.09927, we constructed a well-defined Lagrangian Floer invariant for any closed, oriented $3$-manifold $Y$ via the symplectic geometry of so-called traceless $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-character varieties. This invariant, $\mathrm{SI}(Y)$, which we refer to as the symplectic instanton homology of $Y$, was also shown to satisfy an exact triangle for Dehn surgeries on knots which is typical of Floer-theoretic invariants of $3$-manifolds. In this article, we demonstrate further structural properties of this symplectic instanton homology. For example, Floer theories are expected to roughly sati…
