We show that, under appropriate hypothesis, the groupoid of maps from S to an an algebraic stack X can be identified with a category of tensor functors from coherent sheaves on X to coherent sheaves on S. As an application, we show that if S is a proper variety over the field of complex numbers, then every ``analytic'' map from S to X is ``algebraic''.
Our goal in this paper is to identify certain naturally occurring colimits of schemes and algebraic spaces. To do so, we use (and prove) some new Tannaka duality theorems for maps of algebraic spaces.
We establish Tannaka duality for noetherian algebraic stacks with affine stabilizer groups. Our main application is the existence of Hom-stacks in great generality.
In analogy with the étale fundamental groups, we express the Gauß-Manin connection for $H^1$ in Tannaka terms. One difficulty is that unlike for fundamental groups, the Tannaka group scheme of relative connections, and the groupoid schemes of absolute connections and of connections on the base do not form an exact sequence. We added a theorem due to Pierre Deligne which improves the main result of the article. It allows to compare the Tannaka group scheme of relative connections with the kernel of the map from the groupoid scheme of absolute connections to the one of the base.
We prove that a category of degree zero vector bundles with "potentially strongly semistable reduction" on a p-adic curve is a neutral Tannakian category. We also make a first study of the corresponding affine group scheme. In particular, we determine its group of connected components using a theorem of Weil.
We establish several strengthened versions of Lurie's Tannaka duality theorem for certain classes of spectral algebraic stacks. Our most general version of Tannaka duality identifies maps between stacks with exact symmetric monoidal functors between $\infty$-categories of quasi-coherent complexes which preserve connective and pseudo-coherent complexes.
We prove a Tannaka duality theorem for $(\infty,1)$-categories. This is a duality between certain derived group stacks, or more generally certain derived gerbes, and symmetric monoidal $(\infty,1)$-categories endowed with particular structure. This duality theorem is defined over commutative ring spectra and subsumes the classical statement. We show how the classical theory, and its extension over arbitrary rings, arises as a special case of our more general theory. The application to perfect complexes is explored.
Given a quasi-compact category fibered in groupoids $\mathcal{X}$ and a monoidal subcategory $\mathcal{C}$ of its category of locally free sheaves $\text{Vect}(\mathcal{X})$, we are going to introduce the stack of fiber functors $\text{Fib}_{\mathcal{X},\mathcal{C}}$ with source $\mathcal{C}$, which comes equipped with a map $\mathcal{P}_{\mathcal{C}}\colon\mathcal{X}\to\text{Fib}_{\mathcal{X},\mathcal{C}}$ and a functor $\mathcal{G}\colon\mathcal{C}\to\text{Vect}(\text{Fib}_{\mathcal{X},\mathcal{C}})$. If $\mathcal{C}$ generates $\text{QCoh}(\mathcal{X})$ and $\mathcal{X}$ is an fpqc stack wi…
We introduce a notion of fine Tannakian infinity-categories and prove Tannakian characterization results for symmetric monoidal stable infinity-categories over a field of characteristic zero. It connects derived quotient stacks with symmetric monoidal stable infinity-categories which satisfy a certain simple axiom. We also discuss several applications to examples.
We develop Tannaka duality theory for dg categories. To any dg functor from a dg category $\mathcal{A}$ to finite-dimensional complexes, we associate a dg coalgebra $C$ via a Hochschild homology construction. When the dg functor is faithful, this gives a quasi-equivalence between the derived dg categories of $\mathcal{A}$-modules and of $C$-comodules. When $\mathcal{A}$ is Morita fibrant (i.e. an idempotent-complete pre-triangulated category), it is thus quasi-equivalent to the derived dg category of compact $C$-comodules. We give several applications for motivic Galois groups.
A Tannakian category is an abelian tensor category equipped with a fiber functor and additional structures which ensure that it is equivalent to the category of representations of some affine groupoid scheme acting on the spectrum of a field extension. If we are working over an arbitrary commutative ring rather than a field, the categories of representations cease to be abelian. We provide a list of sufficient conditions which ensure that an additive tensor category is equivalent to the category of representations of an affine groupoid scheme acting on an affine scheme, or, more generally, to …
A classical result of Tannaka duality is the fact that a coalgebra over a field can be reconstructed from its category of finite dimensional representations by using the forgetful functor which sends a representation to its underlying vector space. There is also a corresponding recognition result, which characterizes those categories equipped with a functor to finite dimensional vector spaces which are equivalent to the category of finite dimensional representations of a coalgebra. In this paper we study a generalization of these questions to an arbitrary cosmos, that is, a complete and cocomp…
We develop a semistability algorithm for vector bundles which are given as a kernel of a surjective morphism between splitting bundles on the projective space over an algebraically closed field K. This class of bundles is a generalization of syzygy bundles. We show how to implement this algorithm in a computer algebra system. Further we give applications, mainly concerning the computation of Tannaka dual groups of stable vector bundles of degree 0 on the projective space and on certain smooth complete intersection curves. We also use our algorithm to close an open case left in a recent work of…
Given a diagram of schemes, we can ask if a geometric object over one of them can be built from descent data (usually objects of the same type over the various other schemes in the diagram, together with compatibility isomorphisms). Using the language of moduli stacks, we can rephrase this as follows: saying that descent problems for a given diagram have essentially unique solutions amounts to saying that the diagram in question is a (bicategorical) colimit diagram in a certain 2-category of stacks. In this paper we use generalized Tannaka duality to explicitly compute certain colimits in the …
We consider the effect of $t$-structures on the Tannaka duality theory for dg categories developed in our previous paper. We associate non-negative dg coalgebras $C$ to dg functors on the hearts of $t$-structures, and relate dg $C$-comodules to the original dg category. We give several applications for pro-algebraic homotopy types associated to various cohomology theories, and for motivic Galois groups.
We show that the failure of the usual Verdier duality on Bun(G) leads to a new duality functor on the category of D-modules, and we study its relation to the operation of Eisenstein series.
In this paper we prove that a morphism between schemes or stacks naturally corresponds to a symmetric monoidal functor between stable infinity-categories of quasi-coherent complexes. It can be viewed as a derived analogue of Tannaka duality. As a consequence, we deduce that an algebraic stack satisfying a certain condition can be recovered from the stable infinity-category of quasi-coherent complexes with tensor operation.
Motivated by the S-duality conjecture of Vafa-Witten, Tanaka-Thomas have developed a theory of Vafa-Witten invariants for projective surfaces using the moduli space of Higgs sheaves. Their definition and calculation prove the S-duality prediction of Vafa-Witten in many cases in the side of gauge group $SU(r)$. In this survey paper for ICCM-2019 we review the S-duality conjecture in physics by Vafa-Witten and the definition of Vafa-Witten invariants for smooth projective surfaces and surface Deligne-Mumford stacks. We make a prediction that the Vafa-Witten invariants for Deligne-Mumford surface…
We study in this article the dual of a (strictly) commutative group stack $G$ and give some applications. Using the Picard functor and the Picard stack of $G$, we first give some sufficient conditions for $G$ to be dualizable. Then, for an algebraic stack $X$ with suitable assumptions, we define an Albanese morphism $a_X : X\to A^1(X)$ where $A^1(X)$ is a torsor under the dual commutative group stack $A^0(X)$ of $Pic_{X/S}$. We prove that $a_X$ satisfies a natural universal property. We give two applications of our Albanese morphism. On the one hand, we give a geometric description of the elem…
The aim of this paper is to establish a duality between the category of discrete groupoids and the category of geometrically transitive commutative Hopf algebroids in the sense of P. Deligne and A. Bruguières. In one direction we have the usual contravariant functor which assigns to each Hopf algebroid its characters groupoid (the fiber groupoid at the ground field). In the other direction we construct the contravariant functor which associated to each discrete groupoid its Hopf algebroid of representative functions. This duality extends the well known duality between discrete groups and commu…
We display a symmetric monoidal equivalence between the stable $\infty$-category of filtered spectra, and quasi-coherent sheaves on $\mathbb{A}^1 / \mathbb{G}_m$, the quotient in the setting of spectral algebraic geometry, of the flat affine line by the canonical action of the flat multiplicative group scheme. Via a Tannaka duality argument, we identify the underlying spectrum and associated graded functors with pull-backs of quasi-coherent sheaves along certain morphisms of stacks.
Tannaka duality and its extensions by Lurie, Schäppi et al. reveal that many schemes as well as algebraic stacks may be identified with their tensor categories of quasi-coherent sheaves. In this thesis we study constructions of cocomplete tensor categories (resp. cocontinuous tensor functors) which usually correspond to constructions of schemes (resp. their morphisms) in the case of quasi-coherent sheaves. This means to globalize the usual local-global algebraic geometry. For this we first have to develop basic commutative algebra in an arbitrary cocomplete tensor category. We then discuss ten…
We prove the existence of the dualizing functor for a separated morphism of algebraic stacks with affine diagonal; then we explicitly develop duality for compact Deligne-Mumford stacks focusing in particular on the morphism from a stack to its coarse moduli space and on representable morphisms. We explicitly compute the dualizing complex for a smooth stack over an algebraically closed field and prove that Serre duality holds for smooth compact Deligne-Mumford stacks in its usual form. We prove also that a proper Cohen-Macaulay stack has a dualizing sheaf and it is an invertible sheaf when it i…
We give a generic spectral decomposition of the derived category of twisted D-modules on a moduli stack of mirabolic vector bundles on a curve X in characteristic p: that is, we construct an equivalence with the derived category of quasi-coherent sheaves on a moduli stack of mirabolic local systems on X. This equivalence may be understood as a tamely ramified form of the geometric Langlands equivalence. When X has genus 1, this equivalence generically solves (in the sense of noncommutative geometry) the quantum Calogero-Moser system.
The moduli stack M_X(E_8) of principal E_8-bundles over a smooth projective curve X carries a natural divisor Delta. We study the pull-back of the divisor Delta to the moduli stack M_X(P), where P is a semi-simple and simply connected group such that its Lie algebra Lie(P) is a maximal conformal subalgebra of Lie(E_8). We show that the divisor Delta induces "Strange Duality"-type isomorphisms between the Verlinde spaces at level one of the following pairs of groups (SL(5), SL(5)), (Spin(8), Spin(8)), (SL(3), E_6) and (SL(2), E_7).
As already observed by Gabriel, coherent sheaves on schemes obtained by gluing affine open subsets can be described by a simple gluing construction. An example due to Ferrand shows that this fails in general for pushouts along closed immersions, though the gluing construction still works for flat coherent sheaves. We show that by further restricting this gluing construction to vector bundles, we can construct pushouts along arbitrary morphisms (and more general colimits) of certain algebraic stacks called Adams stacks. The proof of this fact uses generalized Tannaka duality and a variant of De…
Let $Bun_G(X)$ be the moduli stack of $G$-torsors on a smooth projective curve $X$ for a reductive group $G$. We prove a conjecture made by Drinfeld-Wang and Gaitsgory on the Deligne-Lusztig duality for D-modules on $Bun_G(X)$. This conjecture relates Drinfeld-Gaitsgory's pseudo-identity functors to the enhanced Eisenstein series and geometric constant term functors on $DMod(Bun_G(X))$. We also prove a "second adjointness" result for these enhanced functors.
We formulate and prove a generalized Albanese property for families of maps from a smooth curve over an arbitrary field into a commutative group stack. Our proof, which is mostly self-contained, employs local-to-global techniques and some new Ext-vanishing results to reduce to the local Cartier self-duality theorem of Contou-Carrere. As a corollary, we reprove local and global geometric class field theory with arbitrary ramification.
In the setting of the geometric Langlands conjecture, we argue that the phenomenon of divergence at infinity on Bun_G (that is, the difference between $!$-extensions and $*$-extensions) is controlled, Langlands-dually, by the locus of semisimple $\check{G}$-local systems. To see this, we first rephrase the question in terms of Deligne-Lusztig duality and then study the Deligne-Lusztig functor DL_G^\spec acting on the spectral Langlands DG category IndCoh_N(LS_G). We prove that DL_G^\spec is the projection IndCoh_N(LS_G) \to QCoh(LS_G), followed by the action of a coherent D-module St_G which w…
We study gerbes with connection over an etale stack via noncommutative algebras of differential forms on a groupoid presenting the stack. We then describe a dg-category of modules over any such algebra, which we claim represents a dg-enhancement of the derived category of coherent analytic sheaves on the gerbe in question. This category can be used to phrase and prove Fourier-Mukai type dualities between gerbes and other noncommutative spaces. As an application of the theory, we show that a gerbe with flat connection on a torus is dual (in a sense analogous to Fourier-Mukai duality or T-dualit…
In this article we explain the theory of rigid residue complexes in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry, summarizing the background, recent results and anticipated future results. Unlike all previous approaches to Grothendiec Duality, the rigid approach concentrates on the construction of rigid residue complexes over rings, and their intricate yet robust properties. The geometrization, i.e. the passage to rigid residue complexes on schemes and Deligne-Mumford (DM) stacks, by gluing, is fairly easy. In the geometric part of the theory, the main results are the Rigid Residue Theorem and t…
For a large class of geometric objects, the passage to categories of quasi-coherent sheaves provides an embedding in the 2-category of abelian tensor categories. The notion of weakly Tannakian categories introduced by the author gives a characterization of tensor categories in the image of this embedding. However, this notion requires additional structure to be present, namely a fiber functor. For the case of classical Tannakian categories in characteristic zero, Deligne has found intrinsic properties - expressible entirely within the language of tensor categories - which are necessary and suf…
In this article we give a new proof of Ngô's Geometric Stabilisation Theorem, which implies the Fundamental Lemma. This is a statement which relates the cohomology of Hitchin fibres for a quasi-split reductive group scheme $G$ to the cohomology of Hitchin fibres for the endoscopy groups $H_κ$. Our proof avoids the Decomposition and Support Theorem, instead the argument is based on results for $p$-adic integration on coarse moduli spaces of Deligne-Mumford stacks. Along the way we establish a description of the inertia stack of the (anisotropic) moduli stack of $G$-Higgs bundles in terms of end…
We establish several new properties of the $p$-adic Jacquet-Langlands functor defined by Scholze in terms of the cohomology of the Lubin-Tate tower. In particular, we reprove Scholze's basic finiteness theorems, prove a duality theorem, and show a kind of partial Künneth formula. Using these results, we deduce bounds on Gelfand-Kirillov dimension, together with some new vanishing and nonvanishing results. Our key new tool is the six functor formalism with solid almost $\mathcal{O}^+/p$-coefficients developed recently by the second author [Man22]. One major point of this paper is to extend the …
The first goal of this paper is to provide an abstract framework in which to formulate and study local duality in various algebraic and topological contexts. For any stable $\infty$-category $\mathcal{C}$ together with a collection of compact objects $\mathcal{K} \subset \mathcal{C}$ we construct local cohomology and local homology functors satisfying an abstract version of local duality. When specialized to the derived category of a commutative ring $A$ and a suitable ideal in $A$, we recover the classical local duality due to Grothendieck as well as generalizations by Greenlees and May. More…
