Forbidden minors and subdivisions for toroidal graphs are numerous. We consider the toroidal graphs with no $K_{3,3}$-subdivisions that coincide with the toroidal graphs with no $K_{3,3}$-minors. These graphs admit a unique decomposition into planar components and have short lists of obstructions. We provide the complete lists of four forbidden minors and eleven forbidden subdivisions for the toroidal graphs with no $K_{3,3}$'s and prove that the lists are sufficient.
We investigate multiple variants of the game Cops and Robbers. Playing it on an $n \times n$ toroidal chess graph, the game is varied by defining moves for cops and robbers differently, always mimicking moves of certain chess pieces. In these cases, the cop number is completely determined.
We provide a description of unlabelled enumeration techniques, with complete proofs, for graphs that can be canonically obtained by substituting 2-pole networks for the edges of core graphs. Using structure theorems for toroidal and projective-planar graphs containing no K33-subdivisions, we apply these techniques to obtain their unlabelled enumeration.
We describe the structure of 2-connected non-planar toroidal graphs with no K_{3,3}-subdivisions, using an appropriate substitution of planar networks into the edges of certain graphs called toroidal cores. The structural result is based on a refinement of the algorithmic results for graphs containing a fixed K_5-subdivision in [A. Gagarin and W. Kocay, "Embedding graphs containing K_5-subdivisions'', Ars Combin. 64 (2002), 33-49]. It allows to recognize these graphs in linear-time and makes possible to enumerate labelled 2-connected toroidal graphs containing no K_{3,3}-subdivisions and havin…
A {\em total coloring} of a graph $G$ is an assignment of colors to the vertices and the edges of $G$ such that every pair of adjacent/incident elements receive distinct colors. The {\em total chromatic number} of a graph $G$, denoted by $\chiup''(G)$, is the minimum number of colors in a total coloring of $G$. The well-known Total Coloring Conjecture (TCC) says that every graph with maximum degree $Δ$ admits a total coloring with at most $Δ+ 2$ colors. A graph is {\em $1$-toroidal} if it can be drawn in torus such that every edge crosses at most one other edge. In this paper, we investigate t…
A graph is $H$-free if it has no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$. We characterize all graphs $H$ for which there are only finitely many minimal non-three-colorable $H$-free graphs. Such a characterization was previously known only in the case when $H$ is connected. This solves a problem posed by Golovach et al. As a second result, we characterize all graphs $H$ for which there are only finitely many $H$-free minimal obstructions for list 3-colorability.
DP-coloring, also known as correspondence coloring, is introduced by Dvo{ř}{á}k and Postle. It is a generalization of list coloring. In this paper, we show that every connected toroidal graph without triangles adjacent to $5$-cycles has minimum degree at most three unless it is a 2-connected $4$-regular graph with Euler characteristic $ε(G) = 0$. Consequently, every toroidal graph without triangles adjacent to $5$-cycles is DP-$4$-colorable. In the final, we show that every planar graph without two certain subgraphs is DP-$4$-colorable. As immediate consequences, (i) every planar graph without…
We prove that there are 24 4-critical $P_6$-free graphs, and give the complete list. We remark that, if $H$ is connected and not a subgraph of $P_6$, there are infinitely many 4-critical $H$-free graphs. Our result answers questions of Golovach et al. and Seymour.
It is known that every hereditary property can be characterized by finitely many minimal obstructions when restricted to either the class of cographs or the class of $P_4$-reducible graphs. In this work, we prove that also when restricted to the classes of $P_4$-sparse graphs and $P_4$-extendible graphs (both of which extend $P_4$-reducible graphs) every hereditary property can be characterized by finitely many minimal obstructions. We present complete lists of $P_4$-sparse and $P_4$-extendible minimal obstructions for polarity, monopolarity, unipolarity, and $(s,1)$-polarity, where $s$ is a p…
Interval graphs are intersection graphs of closed intervals. A generalization of recognition called partial representation extension was introduced recently. The input gives an interval graph with a partial representation specifying some pre-drawn intervals. We ask whether the remaining intervals can be added to create an extending representation. Two linear-time algorithms are known for solving this problem. In this paper, we characterize the minimal obstructions which make partial representations non-extendible. This generalizes Lekkerkerker and Boland's characterization of the minimal forbi…
A graph is an apex graph if it contains a vertex whose deletion leaves a planar graph. The family of apex graphs is minor-closed and so it is characterized by a finite list of minor-minimal non-members. The long-standing problem of determining this finite list of apex obstructions remains open. This paper determines the 133 minor-minimal, non-apex graphs that have connectivity two.
A Schnyder wood is an orientation and coloring of the edges of a planar map satisfying a simple local property. We propose a generalization of Schnyder woods to graphs embedded on the torus with application to graph drawing. We prove several properties on this new object. Among all we prove that a graph embedded on the torus admits such a Schnyder wood if and only if it is an essentially 3-connected toroidal map. We show that these Schnyder woods can be used to embed the universal cover of an essentially 3-connected toroidal map on an infinite and periodic orthogonal surface. Finally we use th…

If $M$ is an $m \times m$ matrix over $\{ 0, 1, \ast \}$, an $M$-partition of a graph $G$ is a partition $(V_1, \dots V_m)$ such that $V_i$ is completely adjacent (non-adjacent) to $V_j$ if $M_{ij} = 1$ ($M_{ij} = 0$), and there are no further restrictions between $V_i$ and $V_j$ if $M_{ij} = \ast$. Having an $M$-partition is a hereditary property, thus it can be characterized by a set of minimal obstructions (forbidden induced subgraphs minimal with the property of not having an $M$-partition). It is known that for every $3 \times 3$ matrix $M$ over $\{ 0, 1, \ast \}$, there are finitely many…
Matrix partition problems generalize a number of natural graph partition problems, and have been studied for several standard graph classes. We prove that each matrix partition problem has only finitely many minimal obstructions for split graphs. Previously such a result was only known for the class of cographs. (In particular, there are matrix partition problems which have infinitely many minimal chordal obstructions.) We provide (close) upper and lower bounds on the maximum size of a minimal split obstruction. This shows for the first time that some matrices have exponential-sized minimal ob…
Honeycomb toroidal graphs are trivalent Cayley graphs on generalized dihedral groups. We examine the two historical threads leading to these graphs, some of the properties that have been established, and some open problems.
We show that the cop number of toroidal graphs is at most 3. This resolves a conjecture by Schroeder from 2001 which is implicit in a question by Andreae from 1986.
The complete set of minimal obstructions for embedding graphs into the torus is still not determined. In this paper, we present all obstructions for the torus of connectivity 2. Furthermore, we describe the building blocks of obstructions of connectivity 2 for any orientable surface.
It is known that for every graph $G$ there exists the smallest Helly graph $\cal H(G)$ into which $G$ isometrically embeds ($\cal H(G)$ is called the injective hull of $G$) such that the hyperbolicity of $\cal H(G)$ is equal to the hyperbolicity of $G$. Motivated by this, we investigate structural properties of Helly graphs that govern their hyperbolicity and identify three isometric subgraphs of the King-grid as structural obstructions to a small hyperbolicity in Helly graphs.
It's well known that every planar graph is $4$-colorable. A toroidal graph is a graph that can be embedded on a torus. It's proved that every toroidal graph is $7$-colorable. A proper coloring of a graph is called \emph{odd} if every non-isolated vertex has at least one color that appears an odd number of times in its neighborhood. The smallest number of colors that admits an odd coloring of a graph $ G $ is denoted by $χ_{o}(G)$. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is tortoidal, then $χ_{o}\left({G}\right)\le9$; Note that $K_7$ is a toroidal graph, the upper bound is no less than $7$.
Odd coloring is a proper coloring with an additional restriction that every non-isolated vertex has some color that appears an odd number of times in its neighborhood. The minimum number of colors $k$ that can ensure an odd coloring of a graph $G$ is denoted by $χ_o(G)$. We say $G$ is odd $k$-colorable if $χ_o(G)\le k$. This notion is introduced very recently by Petruševski and Škrekovski, who proved that if $G$ is planar then $ χ_{o}(G) \leq 9 $. A toroidal graph is a graph that can be embedded on a torus. Note that a $K_7$ is a toroidal graph, $χ_{o}(G)\leq7$. Tian and Yin proved that every …
We investigate the toroidal expanse of an embedded graph G, that is, the size of the largest toroidal grid contained in G as a minor. In the course of this work we introduce a new embedding density parameter, the stretch of an embedded graph G, and use it to bound the toroidal expanse from above and from below within a constant factor depending only on the genus and the maximum degree. We also show that these parameters are tightly related to the planar crossing number of G. As a consequence of our bounds, we derive an efficient constant factor approximation algorithm for the toroidal expanse …
A toroidal grid graph is a Cartesian product of cycles, and the run length of a Hamiltonian cycle in a grid graph is defined to be the maximum number r such that any r consecutive edges include no more than one edge in any dimension. By constructive methods, we place bounds on the maximum run length possible for a Hamiltonian cycle in several families of grid graphs.
A graph is a cograph if it does not contain a 4-vertex path as an induced subgraph. An $(s, k)$-polar partition of a graph $G$ is a partition $(A, B)$ of its vertex set such that $A$ induces a complete multipartite graph with at most $s$ parts, and $B$ induces the disjoint union of at most $k$ cliques with no other edges. A graph $G$ is said to be $(s, k)$-polar if it admits an $(s, k)$-polar partition. The concepts of $(s, \infty)$-, $(\infty, k)$-, and $(\infty, \infty)$-polar graphs can be analogously defined. Ekim, Mahadev and de Werra pioneered in the research on polar cographs, obtaining…
A graph is concave-round if its vertices can be circularly enumerated so that the closed neighbourhood of each vertex is an interval in the enumeration. In this work, we give a minimal forbidden induced subgraph characterization for the class of concave-round graphs, solving a problem posed by Bang-Jensen, Huang, and Yeo [SIAM J Discrete Math, 13:179--193, 2000]. In addition, we show that it is possible to find one such forbidden induced subgraph in linear time in any given graph that is not concave-round. As part of the analysis, we obtain characterizations by minimal forbidden submatrices fo…
Odd coloring is a proper coloring with an additional restriction that every non-isolated vertex has some color that appears an odd number of times in its neighborhood. The minimum number of colors $k$ that can ensure an odd coloring of a graph $G$ is denoted by $χ_o(G)$. We say $G$ is $k$-colorable if $χ_o(G)\le k$. The vertex arboricity $a(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum $k$ such that $V(G)$ can be partitioned into $k$ sets where each set induces a forest. For a planar graph $G$, it is known that $a(G)\leq 3$. In two recent papers, it was proved that planar graphs without $k$-cycles for some $k\in\{3, 4, 5, 6, 7\}$ have vertex arboricity at most 2. For a toroidal graph $G$, it is known that $a(G)\leq 4$. Let us consider the following question: do toroidal graphs without $k$-cycles have vertex arboricity at most 2? It was known that the question is true for k=3, and recently, Zhang proved the question i…
A graph is sub-unicyclic if it contains at most one cycle. We also say that a graph $G$ is $k$-apex sub-unicyclic if it can become sub-unicyclic by removing $k$ of its vertices. We identify 29 graphs that are the minor-obstructions of the class of $1$-apex sub-unicyclic graphs, i.e., the set of all minor minimal graphs that do not belong in this class. For bigger values of $k$, we give an exact structural characterization of all the cactus graphs that are minor-obstructions of $k$-apex sub-unicyclic graphs and we enumerate them. This implies that, for every $k$, the class of $k$-apex sub-unicy…
Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a minor-closed graph class. We say that a graph $G$ is a $k$-apex of $\mathcal{G}$ if $G$ contains a set $S$ of at most $k$ vertices such that $G\setminus S$ belongs to $\mathcal{G}.$ We denote by $\mathcal{A}_k (\mathcal{G})$ the set of all graphs that are $k$-apices of $\mathcal{G}.$ We prove that every graph in the obstruction set of $\mathcal{A}_k (\mathcal{G}),$ i.e., the minor-minimal set of graphs not belonging to $\mathcal{A}_k (\mathcal{G}),$ has size at most $2^{2^{2^{2^{\mathsf{poly}(k)}}}},$ where $\mathsf{poly}$ is a polynomial function whose degree depends on…
The choosability $χ_\ell(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum $k$ such that having $k$ colors available at each vertex guarantees a proper coloring. Given a toroidal graph $G$, it is known that $χ_\ell(G)\leq 7$, and $χ_\ell(G)=7$ if and only if $G$ contains $K_7$. Cai, Wang, and Zhu proved that a toroidal graph $G$ without 7-cycles is 6-choosable, and $χ_\ell(G)=6$ if and only if $G$ contains $K_6$. They also prove that a toroidal graph $G$ without 6-cycles is 5-choosable, and conjecture that $χ_\ell(G)=5$ if and only if $G$ contains $K_5$. We disprove this conjecture by constructing an infinite…
We give an exact characterization of 3-colorability of triangle-free graphs drawn in the torus, in the form of 186 "templates" (graphs with certain faces filled by arbitrary quadrangulations) such that a graph from this class is not 3-colorable if and only if it contains a subgraph matching one of the templates. As a consequence, we show every triangle-free graph drawn in the torus with edge-width at least six is 3-colorable, a key property used in an efficient 3-colorability algorithm for triangle-free toroidal graphs.
The game of cops and robbers is a well-known game played on graphs. In this paper we consider the straight-ahead orientations of 4-regular quadrangulations of the torus and the Klein bottle and we prove that their cop number is bounded by a constant. We also show that the cop number of every k-regularly oriented toroidal grid is at most 13.
Shrub-depth and rank-depth are dense analogues of the tree-depth of a graph. It is well known that a graph has large tree-depth if and only if it has a long path as a subgraph. We prove an analogous statement for shrub-depth and rank-depth, which was conjectured by Hliněný, Kwon, Obdržálek, and Ordyniak [Tree-depth and vertex-minors, European J.~Combin. 2016]. Namely, we prove that a graph has large rank-depth if and only if it has a vertex-minor isomorphic to a long path. This implies that for every integer $t$, the class of graphs with no vertex-minor isomorphic to the path on $t$ vertices h…
The structure of graphs with a 2-vertex-cut that are critical with respect to the Euler genus is studied. A general theorem describing the building blocks is presented. These constituents, called hoppers and cascades, are classified for the case when Euler genus is small. As a consequence, the complete list of obstructions of connectivity 2 for embedding graphs into the Klein bottle is obtained.
In the final paper of the Graph Minors series N. Robertson and P. Seymour proved that graphs are well-quasi-ordered under the immersion ordering. A direct implication of this theorem is that each class of graphs that is closed under taking immersions can be fully characterized by forbidding a finite set of graphs (immersion obstruction set). However, as the proof of the well-quasi-ordering theorem is non-constructive, there is no generic procedure for computing such a set. Moreover, it remains an open issue to identify for which immersion-closed graph classes the computation of those sets can …
A class of graphs that lies strictly between the classes of graphs of genus (at most) $k-1$ and $k$ is studied. For a fixed orientable surface $S_k$ of genus $k$, let $A_{xy}^k$ be the minor-closed class of graphs with terminals $x$ and $y$ that either embed into $S_{k-1}$ or admit an embedding $Π$ into $S_k$ such that there is a $Π$-face where $x$ and $y$ appear twice in the alternating order. In this paper, the obstructions for the classes $A_{xy}^k$ are studied. In particular, the complete list of obstructions for $A_{xy}^1$ is presented.
A blocking quadruple (BQ) is a quadruple of vertices of a graph such that any two vertices of the quadruple either miss (have no neighbours on) some path connecting the remaining two vertices of the quadruple, or are connected by some path missed by the remaining two vertices. This is akin to the notion of asteroidal triple used in the classical characterization of interval graphs by Lekkerkerker and Boland. We show that a circular-arc graph cannot have a blocking quadruple. We also observe that the absence of blocking quadruples is not in general sufficient to guarantee that a graph is a circ…
An $(L,d)^*$-coloring is a mapping $ϕ$ that assigns a color $ϕ(v)\in L(v)$ to each vertex $v\in V(G)$ such that at most $d$ neighbors of $v$ receive colore $ϕ(v)$. A graph is called $(m,d)^*$-choosable, if $G$ admits an $(L,d)^*$-coloring for every list assignment $L$ with $|L(v)|\geq m$ for all $v\in V(G)$. In this note, it is proved that every toroidal graph, which contains no adjacent triangles and contains no 6-cycles and $l$-cycles for some $l \in \{5,7\}$, is $(3,1)^*$-choosable.
The coloring problem is studied in the paper for graph classes defined by two small forbidden induced subgraphs. We prove some sufficient conditions for effective solvability of the problem in such classes. As their corollary we determine the computational complexity for all sets of two connected forbidden induced subgraphs with at most five vertices except 13 explicitly enumerated cases
A graph is called a pseudoforest if none of its connected components contains more than one cycle. A graph is an apex-pseudoforest if it can become a pseudoforest by removing one of its vertices. We identify 33 graphs that form the minor-obstruction set of the class of apex-pseudoforests, i.e., the set of all minor-minimal graphs that are not apex-pseudoforests.
The orientation completion problem for a fixed class of oriented graphs asks whether a given partially oriented graph can be completed to an oriented graph in the class. Orientation completion problems have been studied recently for several classes of oriented graphs, yielding both polynomial time solutions and NP-completeness results. Local tournaments are a well-structured class of oriented graphs that generalize tournaments and their underlying graphs are intimately related to proper circular-arc graphs. Proper interval graphs are precisely those which can be oriented as acyclic local tourn…
In this note we study embeddings of Cayley graphs of right groups on surfaces. We characterize those right groups which have a toroidal but no planar Cayley graph, such that the generating system of the right group has a minimal generating system of the group as a factor.
The theory of Dvorak, Kral, and Thomas (2015) shows that a 4-critical triangle-free graph embedded in the torus has only a bounded number of faces of length greater than 4 and that the size of these faces is also bounded. We study the natural reduction in such embedded graphs - identification of opposite vertices in 4-faces. We give a computer-assisted argument showing that there are exactly four 4-critical triangle-free irreducible toroidal graphs in which this reduction cannot be applied without creating a triangle. Using this result, we show that every 4-critical triangle-free graph embedde…
We give a characterization of 3-connected graphs which are planar and forbid cube, octahedron, and $H$ minors, where $H$ is the graph which is one $Δ-Y$ away from each of the cube and the octahedron. Next we say a graph is Feynman 5-split if no choice of edge ordering gives an obstruction to parametric Feynman integration at the fifth step. The 3-connected Feynman 5-split graphs turn out to be precisely those characterized above. Finally we derive the full list of forbidden minors for Feynman 5-split graphs of any connectivity.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity, and let $Z(R)$ be the set of zero-divisors of $R$. The annihilator graph of $R$ is defined as the undirected graph $AG(R)$ with the vertex set $Z(R)^*=Z(R)\setminus\{0\}$, and two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent if and only if $ann_R(xy)\neq ann_R(x)\cup ann_R(y)$. In this paper, all rings whose annihilator graphs can be embed on the plane or torus are classified.
We provide a doubly exponential upper bound in $p$ on the size of forbidden pivot-minors for symmetric or skew-symmetric matrices over a fixed finite field $\mathbb{F}$ of linear rank-width at most $p$. As a corollary, we obtain a doubly exponential upper bound in $p$ on the size of forbidden vertex-minors for graphs of linear rank-width at most $p$. This solves an open question raised by Jeong, Kwon, and Oum [Excluded vertex-minors for graphs of linear rank-width at most $k$. European J. Combin., 41:242--257, 2014]. We also give a doubly exponential upper bound in $p$ on the size of forbidden…
Inspired by several recent papers on the edge ideal of a graph G, we study the equivalent notion of the independence complex of G. Using the tool of vertex decomposability from geometric combinatorics, we show that 5-chordal graphs with no chordless 4-cycles are shellable and sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. We use this result to characterize the obstructions to shellability in flag complexes, extending work of Billera, Myers, and Wachs. We also show how vertex decomposability may be used to show that certain graph constructions preserve shellability.
