A toroidal grid graph is a Cartesian product of cycles, and the run length of a Hamiltonian cycle in a grid graph is defined to be the maximum number r such that any r consecutive edges include no more than one edge in any dimension. By constructive methods, we place bounds on the maximum run length possible for a Hamiltonian cycle in several families of grid graphs.
We investigate the toroidal expanse of an embedded graph G, that is, the size of the largest toroidal grid contained in G as a minor. In the course of this work we introduce a new embedding density parameter, the stretch of an embedded graph G, and use it to bound the toroidal expanse from above and from below within a constant factor depending only on the genus and the maximum degree. We also show that these parameters are tightly related to the planar crossing number of G. As a consequence of our bounds, we derive an efficient constant factor approximation algorithm for the toroidal expanse …
The Alon-Tarsi number $AT(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest $k$ for which there is an orientation $D$ of $G$ with max indegree $k-1$ such that the number of even and odd circulations contained in D are different. In this paper, we show that the Alon--Tarsi number of toroidal grids $T_{m,n}=C_m\Box C_n$ equals $4$ when $m,n$ are both odd and $3$ otherwise.
The Cartesian product of two cycles (of length m and length n) has a natural embedding on the torus, such that each face of the embedding is a 4-cycle. The toroidal grid Qd(m,n,r) is a generalization of this in which there is a shift by r when traversing the meridian of length m. In 2008, Steve Wilson found two interesting infinite families of (nonbipartite) toroidal grids that are unstable. (By definition, this means that the canonical bipartite double cover of the grid has more than twice as many automorphisms as the grid has.) It is easy to see that bipartite grids are also unstable, becaus…
A broadcast on a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a function $f:V \rightarrow \{0,1, \ldots, \text{diam}(G)\}$ satisfying $f(v) \leq e(v)$ for all $v \in V$, where $e(v)$ denotes the eccentricity of $v$ and $\text{diam}(G)$ denotes the diameter of $G$. We say that a broadcast dominates $G$ if every vertex can hear at least one broadcasting node. The upper domination number is the maximum cost of all possible minimal broadcasts, where the cost of a broadcast is defined as $\text{cost} (f)= \sum_{v \in V}f(v)$. In this paper we establish both the upper domination number and the upper broadcast domination numb…
The game of cops and robbers is a well-known game played on graphs. In this paper we consider the straight-ahead orientations of 4-regular quadrangulations of the torus and the Klein bottle and we prove that their cop number is bounded by a constant. We also show that the cop number of every k-regularly oriented toroidal grid is at most 13.
A longest sequence $S$ of distinct vertices of a graph $G$ such that each vertex of $S$ dominates some vertex that is not dominated by its preceding vertices, is called a Grundy dominating sequence; the length of $S$ is the Grundy domination number of $G$. In this paper we study the Grundy domination number in the four standard graph products: the Cartesian, the lexicographic, the direct, and the strong product. For each of the products we present a lower bound for the Grundy domination number which turns out to be exact for the lexicographic product and is conjectured to be exact for the stro…
Let $T_{m,n}$ be toroidal square grid of size $m\times n$ and let both $m$ and $n$ be even. Let $P$ be a perfect matching of $T_{m,n}$ and let $D(P)$ be the cycle-rooted spanning forest of $P$ obtained by the generalized Temperley's construction. The types of $P$ and $D(P)$ in the first homology group $H_1(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{Z})$ of torus $\mathbb{T}$ with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}$ has been extensively studied. In this paper we study the types of $P$ and $D(P)$ in the first homology group $H_1(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{F}_2)$ with the coefficients in $\mathbb{F}_2$. Our considerations connect two …
In Zombies and Survivors, a set of zombies attempts to eat a lone survivor loose on a given graph. The zombies randomly choose their initial location, and during the course of the game, move directly toward the survivor. At each round, they move to the neighbouring vertex that minimizes the distance to the survivor; if there is more than one such vertex, then they choose one uniformly at random. The survivor attempts to escape from the zombies by moving to a neighbouring vertex or staying on his current vertex. The zombies win if eventually one of them eats the survivor by landing on their ver…
We compute the treewidth of a family of graphs we refer to as the glued grids, consisting of the stacked prism graphs and the toroidal grids. Our main technique is constructing strict brambles of large orders. We discuss connections to divisorial graph theory coming from tropical geometry, and use our results to compute the divisorial gonality of these graphs.
In this paper, we analyze embeddings of grid graphs on orientable surfaces. We determine the genus of a large class of k-dimensional grid graphs and effective two-sided bounds for the genus of any 3-dimensional grid graph, both in terms of a grid graph's combinatorics. As an application, we provide a complete classification of planar and toroidal grid graphs. Our work requires a variety of combinatorial arguments to determine effective lower bounds on the genus of a grid graph, along with explicitly constructing embeddings of grid graphs on surfaces to determine effective upper bounds on their…
We consider the minimal number of points on a regular grid on the plane that generates $n$ line segments of points of exactly length $k$. We illustrate how this is related to the $n$-queens problem on the toroidal chessboard and show that this number is upper bounded by $kn/3$ and approaches $kn/4$ as $n\rightarrow\infty$ when $k+1$ is coprime with $6$ or when $k$ is large.
A Kempe swap in a proper coloring interchanges the colors on some maximal connected 2-colored subgraph. Two $k$-colorings are $k$-equivalent if we can transform one into the other using Kempe swaps. The triangulated toroidal grid, $T[m\times n]$, is formed from (a toroidal embedding of) the Cartesian product of $C_m$ and $C_n$ by adding parallel diagonals inside all 4-faces. Mohar and Salas showed that not all 4-colorings of $T[m\times n]$ are 4-equivalent. In contrast, Bonamy, Bousquet, Feghali, and Johnson showed that all 6-colorings of $T[m\times n]$ are 6-equivalent. They asked whether the…
A Schnyder wood is an orientation and coloring of the edges of a planar map satisfying a simple local property. We propose a generalization of Schnyder woods to graphs embedded on the torus with application to graph drawing. We prove several properties on this new object. Among all we prove that a graph embedded on the torus admits such a Schnyder wood if and only if it is an essentially 3-connected toroidal map. We show that these Schnyder woods can be used to embed the universal cover of an essentially 3-connected toroidal map on an infinite and periodic orthogonal surface. Finally we use th…
The c_2 invariant, defined by Schnetz in 2011, is an arithmetic graph invariant created towards a better understanding of Feynman integrals. This paper looks at some graph families of interest, with a focus on decompleted toroidal grids. Specifically, the c_2 invariant for p=2 is shown to be zero for all decompleted non-skew toroidal grids. We also calculate the c_2 invariant at p=2 for G a family of graphs called X-ladders. Finally, we show these methods can be applied to any graph with a recursive structure, for any fixed p.
A star edge coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper edge coloring of $G$ such that every path and cycle of length four in $G$ uses at least three different colors. The star chromatic index of a graph $G$, is the smallest integer $k$ for which $G$ admits a star edge coloring with $k$ colors. In this paper, we first obtain some upper bounds for the star chromatic index of the Cartesian product of two graphs. We then determine the exact value of the star chromatic index of $2$-dimensional grids. We also obtain some upper bounds on the star chromatic index of the Cartesian product of a path with a cyc…
An \emph{antimagic labeling} of a finite undirected simple graph with $m$ edges and $n$ vertices is a bijection from the set of edges to the integers $1,...,m$ such that all $n$ vertex sums are pairwise distinct, where a vertex sum is the sum of labels of all edges incident with the same vertex. A graph is called \emph{antimagic} if it has an antimagic labeling. In 1990, Hartsfield and Ringel conjectured that every connected graph, but $K_2$, is antimagic. In 2004, N. Alon et al showed that this conjecture is true for $n$-vertex graphs with minimum degree $Ω(\log n)$. They also proved that com…
Perfect codes in the $n$-dimensio\-nal grid $Λ_n$ of the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^n$ ($0<n\in\mathbb{Z}$) and its quotient toroidal grids were obtained via the truncated distance in $\mathbb{Z}^n$ given between $u=(u_1,\cdots,u_n)$ and $v=(v_1, \ldots,v_n)$ as the graph distance $h(u,v)$ in $Λ_n$, if $|u_i-v_i|\le 1$, for all $i\in\{1, \ldots,n\}$, and as $n+1$, otherwise. Such codes are extended to multilattice graphs $Γ_n$ obtained by glueing ternary $n$-cubes along their codimension 1 ternary subcubes in such a way that each binary $n$-subcube is contained in a unique maximal lattice of $Γ_n$. T…
Although there are very algorithms for embedding graphs on unbounded grids, only few results on embedding or drawing graphs on restricted grids has been published. In this work, we consider the problem of embedding paths and cycles on grid graphs. We give the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of cycles of given length $k$ and paths of given length $k$ between two given vertices in $n$-vertex rectangular grid graphs and introduce two algorithms with running times O$(k)$ and O$(k^2)$ for finding respectively such cycles and paths. Also, we extend our results to $m\times n\tim…
A "clique minor" in a graph G can be thought of as a set of connected subgraphs in G that are pairwise disjoint and pairwise adjacent. The "Hadwiger number" h(G) is the maximum cardinality of a clique minor in G. This paper studies clique minors in the Cartesian product G*H. Our main result is a rough structural characterisation theorem for Cartesian products with bounded Hadwiger number. It implies that if the product of two sufficiently large graphs has bounded Hadwiger number then it is one of the following graphs: - a planar grid with a vortex of bounded width in the outerface, - a cylindr…
