A new approach is suggested to characterize algebraically automorphisms of the category of free algebras of a given variety. It gives in many cases an answer to the problem set by the first of authors, if automorphisms of such a category are inner or not. This question is important for universal algebraic geometry [arXiv:math. GM\slash 0210187],[arXiv:math. GM\slash 0210194]. Most of results are actually valid for arbitrary categories with a represented forgetful functor.
We prove that the group of automorphisms of the category of free modules over Noterian rings is semi-inner and present also a short proof of a similar result for the variery of Lie algebras.
In this paper we give a small review of some recent results of elementary equivalence of linear and algebraic groups and our last new results of elementary equivalence of categories of modules, endomorphism rings of modules, lattices of submodules of modules, and automorphism groups of modules.
Given a variety of universal algebras. A method is suggested for describing automorphisms of a category of free algebras of this variety. Applying this general method all automorphisms of such categories are found in two cases: 1) for the variety of all free associative K-algebras over an infinite field K and 2) for the variety of all representations of groups in unital R-modules over a commutative associative ring R with unit. It turns out that they are almost inner in a sense.
In algebraic geometry over a variety of universal algebras $Θ$, the group $Aut(Θ^{0})$ of automorphisms of the category $Θ^{0}$ of finitely generated free algebras of $Θ$ is of great importance. In this paper, semi-inner automorphisms are defined for the categories of free (semi)modules and free Lie modules; then, under natural conditions on a (semi)ring, it is shown that all automorphisms of those categories are semi-inner. We thus prove that for a variety $_{R}\mathcal{M}$ of semimodules over an IBN-semiring $R$ (an IBN-semiring is a semiring analog of a ring with IBN), all automorphisms of …
Given two schemes $S$ and $S'$, we prove that every equivalence between $\mathbf{Sch}_S$ and $\mathbf{Sch}_{S'}$ comes from a unique isomorphism between $S$ and $S'$. This eliminates all Noetherian and finite type hypotheses from a result of Mochizuki and fully answers a programme set out by Brandenburg in a series of questions on MathOverflow in 2011.
Let V be a variety of algebras of some type. An interest to describing automorphisms of the category C of finitely generated free V-algebras was inspired in connection with development of universal algebraic geometry founded by B. Plotkin. There are a lot of results on this subject. A common method of getting such results was suggested and applied by B. Plotkin and the author (B. Plotkin , G. Zhitomirski, On automorphisms of categories of free algebras of some varieties, J. Algebra 306(2) (2006) 344-367). The method is to find all terms in the language of a given variety which determine such V…
We define the notion of whiskered categories and groupoids, showing that whiskered groupoids have a commutator theory. So also do whiskered $R$-categories, thus answering questions of what might be `commutative versions' of these theories. We relate these ideas to the theory of Leibniz algebras, but the commutator theory here does not satisfy the Leibniz identity. We also discuss potential applications and extensions, for example to resolutions of monoids.
A Morita class of symmetric special Frobenius algebras A in the modular tensor category of a chiral CFT determines a full CFT on oriented world sheets. For unoriented world sheets, A must in addition possess a reversion, i.e. an isomorphism from A^opp to A squaring to the twist. Any two reversions of an algebra A differ by an element of the group Aut(A) of algebra automorphisms of A. We establish a group homomorphism from Aut(A) to the Picard group of the bimodule category C_AA, with kernel consisting of the inner automorphisms, and we refine Morita equivalence to an equivalence relation betwe…
In this article, we characterize the (covariant) isotropy groups of free, finitely generated racks and quandles. As a consequence, we show that the usual inner automorphisms of such racks and quandles are precisely those automorphisms that are "coherently extendible". We then use this result to compute the global isotropy groups of the categories of racks and quandles, i.e. the automorphism groups of the identity functors of these categories.
We address the fact that composition in an opetopic weak n-category is in general not unique and hence is not a well-defined operation. We define composition with a given k-cell in an n-category by a span of (n-k)-categories. We characterise such a cell as universal if its composition span gives an equivalence of (n-k)-categories.
Basing ourselves on Janelidze and Kelly's general notion of central extension, we study universal central extensions in the context of semi-abelian categories. We consider a new fundamental condition on composition of central extensions and give examples of categories which do, or do not, satisfy this condition.
When formulating universal properties for objects in a dagger category, one usually expects a universal property to characterize the universal object up to unique unitary isomorphism. We observe that this is automatically the case in the important special case of C$^*$-categories, provided that one uses enrichment in Banach spaces. We then formulate such a universal property for infinite direct sums in C$^*$-categories, and prove the equivalence with the existing definition due to Ghez, Lima and Roberts in the case of W$^*$-categories. These infinite direct sums specialize to the usual ones in…
We explain how any cofibrantly generated weak factorisation system on a category may be equipped with a universally and canonically determined choice of cofibrant replacement. We then apply this to the theory of weak omega-categories, showing that the universal and canonical cofibrant replacement of the operad for strict omega-categories is precisely Leinster's operad for weak omega-categories.
Clifford theory relates the representation theory of finite groups to those of a fixed normal subgroup by means of induction and restriction, which is an adjoint pair of functors. We generalize this result to the situation of a Krull-Schmidt category on which a finite group acts as automorphisms. This then provides the orbit category introduced by Cibils and Marcos, and studied intensively by Keller in the context of cluster algebras, and by Asashiba in the context of Galois covering functors. We formulate and prove Clifford's theorem for Krull-Schmidt orbit categories with respect to a finite…
In this note we characterize, within the framework of the theory of finite set, those categories of graphs that are {\em algebraic universal} in the sense that every concrete category embeds in them. The proof of the characterization is based on the sparse--dense dichotomy and its model theoretic equivalent.
We exhibit an equivalence between the model-theoretic framework of universal classes and the category-theoretic framework of locally multipresentable categories. We similarly give an equivalence between abstract elementary classes (AECs) admitting intersections and locally polypresentable categories. We use these results to shed light on Shelah's presentation theorem for AECs.
We study the construction of arXiv:2111.11217 [math:AG] in more detail, especially in the case of Schur-finite rigid $\otimes$-categories. This leads to some groundwork on the ideal structure of rigid additive and abelian $\otimes$-categories.
We show that the equivalence between several possible characterizations of Frobenius algebras, and of symmetric Frobenius algebras, carries over from the category of vector spaces to more general monoidal categories. For Frobenius algebras, the appropriate setting is the one of rigid monoidal categories, and for symmetric Frobenius algebras it is the one of sovereign monoidal categories. We also discuss some properties of Nakayama automorphisms.
Categories over a field $k$ can be graded by different groups in a connected way; we consider morphisms between these gradings in order to define the fundamental grading group. We prove that this group is isomorphic to the fundamental group à la Grothendieck as considered in previous papers. In case the $k$-category is Schurian generated we prove that a universal grading exists. Examples of non Schurian generated categories with universal grading, versal grading or none of them are considered.
Relative realizability toposes satisfy a universal property that involves regular functors to other categories. We use this universal property to define what relative realizability categories are, when based on other categories than of the topos of sets. This paper explains the property and gives a construction for relative realizability categories that works for arbitrary base Heyting categories. The universal property shows us some new geometric morphisms to relative realizability toposes too.
We consider categories of relational structures that fully embed every category of universal algebras, and prove a partial characterisation of these in terms of an infinitary variant of the notion of nowhere density of Nešetřil and Ossona de Mendez. More precisely, we show that the Gaifman class of an algebraically universal category contains subdivided complete graphs of any infinite size, and establish that any monotone category satisfying this may be oriented to obtain an algebraically universal category. For the proof of the above, we also develop a categorical framework for relational gad…
Given a symmetric monoidal stable $\infty$-category $\mathcal{C}$ and a left adjoint symmetric monoidal fiber functor to $\operatorname{Mod}_A^{\otimes}$ for some $\mathbb{E}_{\infty}$-ring $A$, one can construct a derived group scheme $G$ of monoidal automorphisms of this functor. The left adjoint fiber functor also induces a monad on $\mathcal{C}$. Under some finiteness hypothesis on the fiber functor, we show there is a comparison functor from the category of representations of $G$ to the descent category of the induced monad on $\mathcal{C}$.
We investigate the conditions that are sufficient to make the Ext-algebra of an object in a (triangulated) category into a Frobenius algebra and compute the corresponding Nakayama automorphism. As an application, we prove the conjecture that hdet($μ_A$) = 1 for any noetherian Artin-Schelter regular (hence skew Calabi-Yau) algebra A.
We study Serre structures on categories enriched in pivotal monoidal categories, and apply this to study Serre structures on two types of graded k-linear categories: categories with group actions and categories with graded hom spaces. We check that Serre structures are preserved by taking orbit categories and skew group categories, and describe the relationship with graded Frobenius algebras. Using a formal version of Auslander-Reiten translations, we show that the derived category of a d-representation finite algebra is fractionally Calabi-Yau if and only if its preprojective algebra has a gr…
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. We study a monoidal category $\mathbb{T}_α$ which is universal among all symmetric $\mathbb{K}$-linear monoidal categories generated by two objects $A$ and $B$ such that $A$ has a, possibly transfinite, filtration. We construct $\mathbb{T}_α$ as a category of representations of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{gl}^M(V_*,V)$ consisting of endomorphisms of a fixed diagonalizable pairing $V_*\otimes V\to \mathbb{K}$ of vector spaces $V_*$ and $V$ of dimension $α$. Here $α$ is an arbitrary cardinal number. We describe explicitly th…
Bergman has given the following abstract characterisation of the inner automorphisms of a group $G$: they are exactly those automorphisms of $G$ which can be extended functorially along any homomorphism $G \rightarrow H$ to an automorphism of $H$. This leads naturally to a definition of "inner automorphism" applicable to the objects of any category. Bergman and Hofstra--Parker--Scott have computed these inner automorphisms for various structures including $k$-algebras, monoids, lattices, unital rings, and quandles---showing that, in each case, they are given by an obvious notion of conjugation…
The principal aim of this note is to give an elementary proof of the fact that any two fiber functors of a Tannakian category are locally isomorphic. This builds on an idea of Deligne concerning scalar extensions of Tannakian categories and implements a proof strategy which Deligne attributes to Grothendieck. Besides categorical generalities, the proof merely relies on basic properties of exterior powers and the classification of finitely generated modules over a principal ideal domain. Using related ideas (but less elementary means) we also present an alternative characterization of Tannakian…

The attempt is to give a formal concpet of system, and with this provide a definition of category, that will also satisfy the definition of a system. An axiomatic base is given, for constructing the group of integers. In the process, we define a group of automorphisms; we are defining an ordered group of functors with a natural transformation between any two. We give an isomorphism from the group of integers into the group of automorphisms, as guaranteed by Cayley's Theorem. The ultimate aim is to use these definitions and concepts, of system and category, to give a general description of math…
Twisted homomorphisms of bialgebras are bialgebra homomorphisms from the first into Drinfeld twistings of the second. They possess a composition operation extending composition of bialgebra homomorphisms. Gauge transformations of twists, compatible with adjacent homomorphisms, give rise to gauge transformation of twisted homomorphisms, which behave nicely with respect to compositions. Here we study (gauge classes of) twisted automorphisms of cocommutative Hopf algebras. After revising well-known relations between twists, twisted forms of bialgebras and $R$-matrices (for commutative bialgebras)…
Let T be a triangulated category, A a graded abelian category and h: T -> A a homology theory on T with values in A. If the functor h reflects isomorphisms, is full and is such that for any object x in A there is an object X in T with an isomorphism between h(X) and x, we prove that A is a hereditary abelian category and the ideal Ker(h) is a square zero ideal which as a bifunctor on T is isomorphic to Ext^1_A(h(-)[1], h(-)).
Any group $G$ gives rise to a 2-group of inner automorphisms, $\mathrm{INN}(G)$. It is an old result by Segal that the nerve of this is the universal $G$-bundle. We discuss that, similarly, for every 2-group $G_{(2)}$ there is a 3-group $\mathrm{INN}(G_{(2)})$ and a slightly smaller 3-group $\mathrm{INN}_0(G_{(2)})$ of inner automorphisms. We describe these for $G_{(2)}$ any strict 2-group, discuss how $\mathrm{INN}_0(G_{(2)})$ can be understood as arising from the mapping cone of the identity on $G_{(2)}$ and show that its underlying 2-groupoid structure fits into a short exact sequence $G_{(…
We categorify various finite-type cluster algebras with coefficients using completed orbit categories associated to Frobenius categories. Namely, the Frobenius categories we consider are the categories of finitely generated Gorenstein projective modules over the singular Nakajima category associated to a Dynkin diagram and their standard Frobenius quotients. In particular, we are able to categorify all finite-type skew-symmetric cluster algebras with universal coefficients and finite-type Grassmannian cluster algebras. Along the way, we classify the standard Frobenius models of a certain famil…
We study the universal measuring coalgebras P(A,B) of Sweedler and the universal measuring comodules Q(M,N) of Batchelor. We show that these universal objects exist in a very general context. We provide a detailed proof of an observation of Wraith, that the P(A,B) are the hom-objects of an enrichment of algebras in coalgebras. We show also that the Q(M,N) provide an enrichment of the global category of modules in the global category of comodules.
The inner automorphisms of a group G can be characterized within the category of groups without reference to group elements: they are precisely those automorphisms of G that can be extended, in a functorial manner, to all groups H given with homomorphisms G --> H. Unlike the group of inner automorphisms of G itself, the group of such extended systems of automorphisms is always isomorphic to G. A similar characterization holds for inner automorphisms of an associative algebra R over a field K; here the group of functorial systems of automorphisms is isomorphic to the group of units of R modulo …
A poset can be regarded as a category in which there is at most one morphism between objects, and such that at most one of Hom(c,c') and Hom(c',c) is nonempty for c not equal to c'. If we keep in place the latter axiom but allow for more than one morphism between objects, we can have a sort of generalized poset in which there are multiplicities attached to the covering relations, and possibly nontrivial automorphism groups. We call such a category an "updown category." In this paper we give a precise definition of such categories and develop a theory for them, which incorporates earlier notion…
We investigate cofree coalgebras, and limits and colimits of coalgebras in some abelian monoidal categories of interest, such as bimodules over a ring, and modules and comodules over a bialgebra or Hopf algebra. We find concrete generators for the categories of coalgebras in these monoidal categories, and explicitly construct cofree coalgebras, products and limits of coalgebras in each case. This answers an open question of A. Agore on the existence of a cofree coring, and constructs the cofree (co)module coalgebra on a $B$-(co)module, for a bialgebra $B$.
We consider Frobenius algebras and their bimodules in certain abelian monoidal categories. In particular we study the Picard group of the category of bimodules over a Frobenius algebra, i.e. the group of isomorphism classes of invertible bimodules. The Rosenberg-Zelinsky sequence describes a homomorphism from the group of algebra automorphisms to the Picard group, which however is typically not surjective. We investigate under which conditions there exists a Morita equivalent Frobenius algebra for which the corresponding homomorphism is surjective. One motivation for our considerations is the …
