We investigate Bar-Natan's characteristic two Khovanov link homology theory studying both the filtered and bi-graded theories. The filtered theory is computed explicitly and the bi-graded theory analysed by setting up a family of spectral sequences. The E_2-pages can be described in terms of groups arising from the action of a certain endomorphism on mod 2 Khovanov homology. Some simple consequences are discussed.
Khovanov introduced a cohomology theory for oriented classical links whose graded Euler characteristic is the Jones polynomial. Since Khovanov's theory is functorial for link cobordisms between classical links, we obtain an invariant of a surface-knot, called the {\it Khovanov-Jacobsson number}, by considering the surface-knot as a link cobordism between empty links. In this paper, we define an invariant of a surface-knot which is a generalization of the Khovanov-Jacobsson number by using Bar-Natan's theory, and prove that any $T^2$-knot has the trivial Khovanov-Jacobsson number.
We introduce a new skein module for three manifolds based on properly embedded surfaces and their relations introduced by D.Bar-Natan, and modified by M.Khovanov. We compute the structure of the modules for some manifolds, including Seifert fibred manifolds.
We show that over the binary field $\mathbb F_2$, the Bar-Natan perturbation of Khovanov homology splits as the direct sum of its two reduced theories, which we also prove are isomorphic. This extends Shumakovitch's analogous result for ordinary Khovanov homology, without the perturbation.
We discuss a new perspective on Khovanov homology, using categorifications of tensor products. While in many ways more technically demanding than Khovanov's approach (and its extension by Bar-Natan), this has distinct advantage of directly connecting Khovanov homology to a categorification of \$(\mathbb{C}^2)^{\otimes \ell}\$, and admitting a direct generalization to other Lie algebras. While the construction discussed is a special case of that given in previous work of the author, this paper contains new results about the special case of \$\mathfrak{sl}_2\$ showing an explicit connection to B…
We prove a lower bound on the ribbon distance via Bar-Natan Homology. This lower bound agrees with Alishahi's lower bound on the unknotting number via Bar-Natan Homology, which furthers a pattern first observed by Sarkar: Sarkar's lower bound on the ribbon distance via Lee Homology agreed with Alishahi and Dowlin's lower bound on the unknotting number via Lee Homology. We also prove a lower bound on the ribbon distance via $α$-homology, a variant of Khovanov homology defined recently by Khovanov and Robert.
A spectral sequence is established, whose $E_{2}$ page is Bar-Natan's variant of Khovanov homology and which abuts to a deformation of instanton homology for knots and links. This spectral sequence arises as a specialization of a spectral sequence whose $E_{2}$ page is a characteristic-2 version of $F_{5}$ homology, in Khovanov's classification.
We give a geometric interpretation of Bar-Natan's universal invariant for the class of tangles in the 3-ball with four ends: we associate with such 4-ended tangles $T$ multicurves $\widetilde{\operatorname{BN}}(T)$, that is, collections of immersed curves with local systems in the 4-punctured sphere. These multicurves are tangle invariants up to homotopy of the underlying curves and equivalence of the local systems. They satisfy a gluing theorem which recovers the reduced Bar-Natan homology of links in terms of wrapped Lagrangian Floer theory. Furthermore, we use $\widetilde{\operatorname{BN}}…
We use a special kind of 2-dimensional extended Topological Quantum Field Theories (TQFTs), so-called open-closed TQFTs, in order to extend Khovanov homology from links to arbitrary tangles, not necessarily even. For every plane diagram of an oriented tangle, we construct a chain complex whose homology is invariant under Reidemeister moves. The terms of this chain complex are modules of a suitable algebra A such that there is one action of A or A^op for every boundary point of the tangle. We give examples of such algebras A for which our tangle homology theory reduces to the link homology theo…
We show that the order of torsion homology classes in Bar-Natan deformation of Khovanov homology is a lower bound for the unknotting number. We give examples of knots that this is a better lower bound than |s(K)/2|, where s(K) is the Rasmussen s invariant defined by the Bar-Natan spectral sequence.
We determine a wide class of knots, which includes unknotting number one knots, within which Khovanov homology detects the unknot. A corollary is that the Khovanov homology of many satellite knots, including the Whitehead double, detects the unknot.
We prove that the Khovanov homology of the 2-cable detects the unknot. A corollary is that Khovanov's categorification of the 2-colored Jones polynomial detects the unknot.
We present an easy example of mutant links with different Khovanov homology. The existence of such an example is important because it shows that Khovanov homology cannot be defined with a skein rule similar to the skein relation for the Jones polynomial.
We construct an equivariant version of annular Khovanov homology via the Frobenius algebra associated with $U(1) \times U(1)$-equivariant cohomology of $\mathbb{CP}^1$. Motivated by the relationship between the Temperley-Lieb algebra and annular Khovanov homology, we also introduce an equivariant analogue of the Temperley-Lieb algebra.
We investigate the Khovanov-Rozansky invariant of a certain tangle and its compositions. Surprisingly the complexes we encounter reduce to ones that are very simple. Furthermore, we discuss a "local" algorithm for computing Khovanov-Rozansky homology and compare our results with those for the "foam" version of sl_3-homology.
A spectral sequence is established, from Bar-Natan's variant of Khovanov homology to a deformation of instanton homology for knots and links. This spectral sequence arises as a specialization of a spectral sequence from a characteristic-2 version of $F_5$ homology, in Khovanov'sclassification. Concordance invariants of knots are derived from the corresponding instanton homology groups, including a 1-parameter family of homomorphisms $f_r$ from the concordance group to the reals, having the potential to provide independent bounds on the genus and number of double points for immersed surfaces wi…
Khovanov homology extends to singular links via a categorified analogue of Vassiliev skein relation. In view of Vassiliev theory, the extended Khovanov homology can be seen as Vassiliev derivatives of Khovanov homology. In this paper, we develop a new method to compute the first derivative. Namely, we introduce a complex, called a crux complex, and prove that the Khovanov homologies of singular links with unique double points are homotopic to cofibers of endomorphisms on crux complexes. Since crux complexes are actually small for some links, the result enables a direct computation of the first…
We define a variant of Khovanov homology for links in thickened disks with multiple punctures. This theory is distinct from the one previously defined by Asaeda, Przytycki, and Sikora, but is related to it by a spectral sequence. Additionally, we show that there are spectral sequences induced by embeddings of thickened surfaces, which recover the spectral sequence from annular Khovanov homology to Khovanov homology as a special case.
We define a third grading on Khovanov homology, which is an invariant of annular links but changes by $\pm 1$ under stabilization. We illustrate the use of our computer implementation, and give some example calculations.
As Oleg Viro describes in his paper, the most fundamental property of the Khovanov homology group is their invariance under Reidemeister moves. Viro constructes Khovanov complex and homology consisting of Jordan curves with sign and also gives a proof for the only case of first Reidemeister move by using his definition of Khovanov homology groups. In this paper, homotopy maps are obtained explicitly for the other Reidemeister moves, i.e. second and third.
We define a wall-crossing morphism for Khovanov-Rozansky homology; that is, a map between the KR homology of knots related by a crossing change. Using this map, we extend KR homology to an invariant of singular knots categorifying the Vasilliev derivative of the HOMFLY polynomial, and of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ quantum invariants.
In analogy with a recursive formula for the HOMFLY-PT polynomial of links given by Jaeger, we give a recursive formula for the graph polynomial introduced by Kauffman and Vogel. We show how this formula extends to the Khovanov-Rozansky graph homology.
Khovanov homology ist a new link invariant, discovered by M. Khovanov, and used by J. Rasmussen to give a combinatorial proof of the Milnor conjecture. In this thesis, we give examples of mutant links with different Khovanov homology. We prove that Khovanov's chain complex retracts to a subcomplex, whose generators are related to spanning trees of the Tait graph, and we exploit this result to investigate the structure of Khovanov homology for alternating knots. Further, we extend Rasmussen's invariant to links. Finally, we generalize Khovanov's categorifications of the colored Jones polynomial…
We describe a modification of Khovanov homology (math.QA/9908171), in the spirit of Bar-Natan (math.GT/0410495), which makes the theory properly functorial with respect to link cobordisms. This requires introducing `disorientations' in the category of smoothings and abstract cobordisms between them used in Bar-Natan's definition. Disorientations have `seams' separating oppositely oriented regions, coming with a preferred normal direction. The seams satisfy certain relations (just as the underlying cobordisms satisfy relations such as the neck cutting relation). We construct explicit chain maps…
We study Khovanov homology over the Frobenius algebra $\mathbb{F}[U,V,X]/((X-U)(X-V))$, or $U(1) \times U(1)$-equivariant Khovanov homology, and extract two families of concordance invariants using the algebraic $U$-power and $V$-power filtrations on the chain complex. We also further develop the reduced version of the theory and study its behavior under mirroring.
We give chain homotopy maps of Khovanov-type link homology of a universal differential. The universal differential, discussed by Mikhail Khovanov, Marco Mackaay, Paul Turner and Pedro Vaz, contains the original Khovanov's differential and Lee's differential. We also consider the conditions of any differential ensuring the Reidemeister invariance for the chain homotopy maps.
These lecture notes, which were designed for the Summer School "Heegaard-Floer Homology and Khovanov Homology" in Marseilles, 29th May - 2nd June, 2006, provide an elementary introduction to Khovanov homology. The intended audience is graduate students with some minimal background in low-dimensional and algebraic topology. The lectures cover the basic definitions, important properties, a number of variants and some applications. At the end of each lecture the reader is referred to the relevant literature for further reading.
Let $\widetilde{K}$ be a two-periodic braid and let $K$ be its quotient. In this paper we show there is a spectral sequence from the next-to-top winding number grading of the sutured annular Khovanov homology of the closure of $\widetilde{K}$ to the next-to-top winding number grading of the sutured annular Khovanov homology of the closure of $K$.
We compute the reduced version of Khovanov and Rozansky's sl(N) homology for two-bridge knots and links. The answer is expressed in terms of the HOMFLY polynomial and signature.
We introduce two monoidal supercategories: the odd dotted Temperley-Lieb category $\mathcal{T\!L}_{o,\bullet}(δ)$, which is a generalization of the odd Temperley-Lieb category studied by Brundan and Ellis, and the odd annular Bar-Natan category $\mathcal{BN}_{\!o}(\mathbb{A})$, which generalizes the odd Bar-Natan category studied by Putyra. We then show there is an equivalence of categories between them if $δ=0$. We use this equivalence to better understand the action of the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}(1|1)$ on the odd Khovanov homology of a knot in a thickened annulus found by Grigsby and…
We study the relationship between the HOMFLY and sl(N) knot homologies introduced by Khovanov and Rozansky. For each N>0, we show there is a spectral sequence which starts at the HOMFLY homology and converges to the sl(N) homology. As an application, we determine the KR-homology of knots with 9 crossings or fewer.
We construct a new spectral sequence beginning at the Khovanov homology of a link and converging to the Khovanov homology of the disjoint union of its components. The page at which the sequence collapses gives a lower bound on the splitting number of the link, the minimum number of times its components must be passed through one another in order to completely separate them. In addition, we build on work of Kronheimer-Mrowka and Hedden-Ni to show that Khovanov homology detects the unlink.
The Temperley-Lieb algebra is a fundamental component of SU(2) topological quantum field theories. We construct chain complexes corresponding to minimal idempotents in the Temperley-Lieb algebra. Our results apply to the framework which determines Khovanov homology. Consequences of our work include semi-orthogonal decompositions of categorifications of Temperley-Lieb algebras and Postnikov decompositions of all Khovanov tangle invariants.
We use Lee's work on the Khovanov homology to define a knot invariant s. We show that s(K) is a concordance invariant and that it provides a lower bound for the slice genus of K. As a corollary, we give a purely combinatorial proof of the Milnor conjecture.
We show that the information contained in the associated graded vector space to Gornik's version of Khovanov-Rozansky knot homology is equivalent to a single even integer s_n(K). Furthermore we show that s_n is a homomorphism from the smooth knot concordance group to the integers. This is in analogy with Rasmussen's invariant coming from a perturbation of Khovanov homology.
In this article, we give an elementary construction of homological invariants of links presented by braid closures. The Euler characteristic of this complex is equal to quantum polynomial invariant of link.
Mikhail Khovanov in math.QA/9908171 defined, for a diagram of an oriented classical link, a collection of groups numerated by pairs of integers. These groups were constructed as homology groups of certain chain complexes. The Euler characteristics of these complexes are coefficients of the Jones polynomial of the link. The goal of this note is to rewrite this construction in terms more friendly to topologists. A version of Khovanov homology for framed links is introduced. For framed links whose Kauffman brackets are involved in a skein relation, these homology groups are related by an exact se…
We construct a Kirby color in the setting of Khovanov homology: an ind-object of the annular Bar-Natan category that is equipped with a natural handle slide isomorphism. Using functoriality and cabling properties of Khovanov homology, we define a Kirby-colored Khovanov homology that is invariant under the handle slide Kirby move, up to isomorphism. Via the Manolescu--Neithalath 2-handle formula, Kirby-colored Khovanov homology agrees with the $\mathfrak{gl}_{2}$ skein lasagna module, hence is an invariant of $4$-dimensional $2$-handlebodies.
We study the relationship between Bar-Natan's perturbation in Khovanov homology and Szabo's geometric spectral sequence, and construct a link invariant that generalizes both into a common theory. We study a few properties of the new invariant, and introduce a family of s-invariants from the new theory in the same spirit as Rasmussen's s-invariant.
This paper establishes an isomorphism between the Bar-Natan skein module of the solid torus with a particular boundary curve system and the homology of the (n,n) Springer variety. The results build on Khovanov's work with crossingless matchings and the cohomology of the (n,n) Springer variety. We also give a formula for comultiplication in the Bar-Natan skein module for this specific three-manifold and boundary curve system.
This paper is an introduction to Khovanov homology, starting with the Kauffman bracket state summation, emphasizing the Bar-Natan Canopoloy and tangle cobordism approach. The paper discusses a simplicial approach to Khovanov homology and a quantum model for it so that the graded Euler characteristic that produces the Jones polynomial from Khovanov homology becomes the trace of a unitary transformation on a Hilbert space associated with the Khovanov Homology.
The aim of this paper is to introduce and study a geometric spectral sequence in Khovanov homology. The construction was motivated by a similar spectral sequence from Khovanov homology to Heegaard Floer homology.
In this paper, we discuss degree 0 crossing change on Khovanov homology in terms of cobordisms. Namely, using Bar-Natan's formalism of Khovanov homology, we introduce a sum of cobordisms that yields a morphism on complexes of two diagrams of crossing change, which we call the "genus-one morphism." It is proved that the morphism is invariant under the moves of double points in tangle diagrams. As a consequence, in the spirit of Vassiliev theory, taking iterated mapping cones, we obtain an invariant for singular tangles that extending sl(2) tangle homology; examples include Lee homology, Bar-Nat…
In 2001, Khovanov and Seidel constructed a faithful action of the (m+1)-strand braid group on the derived category of left modules over a quiver algebra, A_m. We interpret the Hochschild homology of the Khovanov-Seidel braid invariant as a direct summand of the sutured Khovanov homology of the annular braid closure.
Based on the results of the second author, we define an equivariant version of Lee and Bar-Natan homology for periodic links and show that there exists an equivariant spectral sequence from the equivariant Khovanov homology to equivariant Lee homology. As a result we obtain new obstructions for a link to be periodic. These obstructions generalize previous results of Przytycki and of the second author.
We adapt Bar-Natan's scanning algorithm for fast computations in (even) Khovanov homology to odd Khovanov homology. We use a mapping cone construction instead of a tensor product, which allows us to deal efficiently with the more complicated sign assignments in the odd theory. The algorithm has been implemented in a computer program. We also use the algorithm to determine the odd Khovanov homology of 3-strand torus links.
We show that the unnormalised Khovanov homology of an oriented link can be identified with the derived functors of the inverse limit. This leads to a homotopy theoretic interpretation of Khovanov homology.
