The primary objects of study in the ``knot theory of complex plane curves'' are C-links: links (or knots) cut out of a 3-sphere in the complex plane by complex plane transverse and totally tangential. Transverse C-links are naturally oriented. There are many natural classes of examples: links of singularities; links at infinity; links of divides, free divides, tree divides, and graph divides; and--most generally--quasipositive links. Totally tangential C-links are unoriented but naturally framed; they turn out to be precisely the real-analytic Legendrian links, and can profitably be investigated in terms of certain closely associated transverse C-links.
The knot theory of complex plane curves is attractive not only for its own internal results, but also for its intriguing relationships and interesting contributions elsewhere in mathematics. Within low-dimensional topology, related subjects include braids, concordance, polynomial invariants, contact geometry, fibered links and open books, and Lefschetz pencils. Within low-dimensional algebraic and analytic geometry, related subjects include embeddings and injections of the complex line in the complex plane, line arrangements, Stein surfaces, and Hilbert's 16th problem.
In this paper, we generalize a result of Satoh to show that for any odd natural $n$, the connected sum of the $n$-twist spun sphere of a knot $K$ and an unknotted projective plane in the 4-sphere is equivalent to the same unknotted projective plane. We additionally provide a fix to a small error in Satoh's proof of the case that $K$ is a 2-bridge knot.
As one of the background papers of the classification project of hyperbolic primitive/Seifert knots in $S^3$ whose complete list is given in [BK20], this paper classifies all possible R-R diagrams of two disjoint simple closed curves $R$ and $β$ lying in the boundary of a genus two handlebody $H$ up to equivalence such that $β$ is a proper power curve and a 2-handle addition $H[R]$ along $R$ embeds in $S^3$ so that $H[R]$ is the exterior of a tunnel-number-one knot. As a consequence, if $R$ is a nonseparating simple closed curve on the boundary of a genus two handlebody such that $H[R]$ embeds…
The backbone of most proteins forms an open curve. To study their entanglement, a common strategy consists in searching for the presence of knots in their backbones using topological invariants. However, this approach requires to close the curve into a loop, which alters the geometry of curve. Knoto-ID allows evaluating the entanglement of open curves without the need to close them, using the recent concept of knotoids which is a generalization of the classical knot theory to open curves. Knoto-ID can analyse the global topology of the full chain as well as the local topology by exhaustively s…
We study collections of planar curves that yield diagrams for all knots. In particular, we show that a very special class called potholder curves carries all knots. This has implications for realizing all knots and links as special types of meanders and braids. We also introduce and apply a method to compare the efficiency of various classes of curves that represent all knots.
This survey reviews Kauffman's model of folded ribbon knots: knots made of a thin strip of paper folded flat in the plane. The ribbonlength is the length to width ratio of such a ribbon, and the ribbonlength problem asks to minimize the ribbonlength for a given knot type. We give a summary of known results. For the most part, these are upper bounds of ribbonlength of twist knots and certain families of torus knots. We discuss result of G. Tian, which give upper bounds of ribbonlength in terms of crossing number. In addition, it turns out the choice of fold affects the ribbonlength. We end with…
In this manuscript we introduce a method to measure entanglement of curves in 3-space that extends the notion of knot and link polynomials to open curves. We define the bracket polynomial of curves in 3-space and show that it has real coefficients and is a continuous function of the chain coordinates. This is used to define the Jones polynomial in a way that it is applicable to both open and closed curves in 3-space. For open curves, it has real coefficients and it is a continuous function of the chain coordinates and as the endpoints of the curve tend to coincide, the Jones polynomial of the …
Ozsváth-Szabó proved the property that any coefficient of Alexander polynomial of lens space knot is either $\pm1$ or $0$ and the non-zero coefficients are alternating. Combining the formulas of the Alexander polynomial of lens space knots due to Kadokami-Yamada and Ichihara-Saito-Teragaito, we refine Ozsváth-Szabó's property as the existence of simple curves included in a region in ${\Bbb R}^2$. The existence of curves, that has no end-points connected, is just 1-component in a region, can search distribution of non-zero coefficients of the Alexander polynomial of the lens space knot. This cu…
It is shown that if a regular knot of class C2 is embedded in the boundary of the complex hyperbolic plane as the limit set of a discrete subgroup of PU(2, 1) then it is either a chain or an R-circle.
This paper studies properly embedded surfaces in the 4-ball that are exotically knotted (i.e., topologically but not smoothly isotopic), and leverages this local phenomenon to study surfaces in larger 4-manifolds. The main results provide a new construction of exotically knotted surfaces, including exotic slice surfaces of all genera in the 4-ball and exotic closed surfaces in larger 4-manifolds. The construction is well-suited to the complex and symplectic settings, providing the first examples of exotically knotted complex curves and symplectic 2-spheres. Along the way, we articulate some di…
Our goal is to systematically compute the $\mathbb{C}P^2$-genus of all prime knots up to 8-crossings. We obtain upper bounds on the $\mathbb{C}P^2$-genus via coherent band surgery. We obtain lower bounds by obstructing homological degrees of potential slice discs. The obstructions are pulled from a variety of sources in low-dimensional topology and adapted to $\mathbb{C}P^2$. There are 27 prime knots and distinct mirrors up to 7-crossings. We now know the $\mathbb{C}P^2$-genus of all but 2 of these knots. There are 64 prime knots and distinct mirrors up to 8-crossings. We now know the $\mathbb…
For each braid $β\in Br_n$ we construct a $2$-periodic complex $\mathbb{S}_β$ of quasi-coherent $\mathbb{C}^*\times \mathbb{C}^*$-equivariant sheaves on the non-commutative nested Hilbert scheme $Hilb_{1,n}^{free}$. We show that the triply graded vector space of the hypecohomology $ \mathbb{H}( \mathbb{S}_β\otimes \wedge^\bullet (\mathcal{B}))$ with $\mathcal{B}$ being tautological vector bundle, is an isotopy invariant of the knot obtained by the closure of $β$. We also show that the support of cohomology of the complex $\mathbb{S}_β$ is supported on the ordinary nested Hilbert scheme $Hilb_{…

A plane curve is a knot diagram in which each crossing is replaced by a 4-valent vertex, and so are dual to a subset of planar quadrangulations. The aim of this paper is to introduce a new tool for sampling diagrams via sampling of plane curves. At present the most efficient method for sampling diagrams is rejection sampling, however that method is inefficient at even modest sizes. We introduce Markov chains that sample from the space of plane curves using local moves based on Reidemeister moves. By then mapping vertices on those curves to crossings we produce random knot diagrams. Combining t…
We discuss infinitesimal bending of curves and knots in R^{3}. A brief overview of the results on the infinitesimal bending of curves is outlined. Change of the Willmore energy, as well as of the Mobius energy under infinitesimal bending of knots is considered. Our visualization tool devoted to visual representation of infinitesimal bending of knots is presented.
