Relatively extremal knots are the relative minima of the ropelength functional in C^1 topology. On the set curves of fixed length, they are the relative maxima of thickness (normal injectivity radius) functional, including the ideal knots. We prove that a C^{1,1} relatively extremal knot in R^n has thickness equal to half of the minimal double critical distance unless it has constant maximal (generalized) curvature. This result also applies to links since our method is local. Our main approach is to show that the shortest curves with bounded curvature and C^1 boundary conditions in R^n contain CLC (circle-line-circle) curves, if they do not have constant maximal curvature.
The thickness, NIR(K) of a knot or link K is defined to be the radius of the largest solid tube one can put around the curve without any self intersections, which is also known as the normal injectivity radius of K. For C^{1,1} curves K, NIR(K)=min{(1/2)DCSC(K),(1/(supkappa(K))))}, where kappa(K) is the generalized curvature, and the double critical self distance DCSD(K) is the shortest length of the segments perpendicular to K at both end points. The knots and links in ideal shapes (or tight knots or links) belong to the minima of ropelength = length/thickness within a fixed isotopy class. In…
Aitchison and Rubinstein constructed two knot complements that can be decomposed into two regular ideal dodecahedra. This paper shows that these knot complements are the only knot complements that decompose into n regular ideal dodecahedra, providing a partial solution to a conjecture of Neumann and Reid.
In this paper we provide a new obstruction to 0-concordance of knotted surfaces in $S^4$ in terms of Alexander ideals. We use this to prove the existence of infinitely many linearly independent 0-concordance classes and to provide the first proof that the submonoid of 2-knots is not a group. The main result is that the Alexander ideal induces a homomorphism from the 0-concordance monoid $\mathscr{C}_0$ of oriented surface knots in $S^4$ to the ideal class monoid of $\mathbb{Z}[t^{\pm1}]$. Consequently, any surface knot with nonprincipal Alexander ideal is not 0-slice and in fact, not invertibl…
The noncommutative A-ideal of a knot is a generalization of the A-polynomial, defined using Kauffman bracket skein modules. In this paper we show that any knot that has the same noncommutative A-ideal as the (2,2p+1)-torus knot has the same colored Jones polynomials. This is a consequence of the orthogonality relation, which yields a recursive relation for computing all colored Jones polynomials of the knot.
There are many studies about twisted Alexander invariants for knots and links, but calculations of twisted Alexander invariants for spatial graphs, handlebody-knots, and surface-links have not been demonstrated well. In this paper, we give some remarks to calculate the twisted Alexander ideals for spatial graphs, handlebody-knots and surface-links, and observe their behaviors. For spatial graphs, we calculate the invariants of Suzuki's theta-curves and show that the invariants are nontrivial for Suzuki's theta-curves whose Alexander ideals are trivial. For handlebody-knots, we give a remark on…
An ideal triangulation $\mathcal{T}$ of a hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with one cusp is non-peripheral if no edge of $\mathcal{T}$ is homotopic to a curve in the boundary torus of $M$. For such a triangulation, the gluing and completeness equations can be solved to recover the hyperbolic structure of $M$. A planar projection of a knot gives four ideal cell decompositions of its complement (minus 2 balls), two of which are ideal triangulations that use 4 (resp., 5) ideal tetrahedra per crossing. Our main result is that these ideal triangulations are non-peripheral for all planar, reduced, alternat…
We probe the character of knotting in open, confined polymers, assigning knot types to open curves by identifying their projections as virtual knots. In this sense, virtual knots are transitional, lying in between classical knot types, which are useful to classify the ambiguous nature of knotting in open curves. Modelling confined polymers using both lattice walks and ideal chains, we find an ensemble of random, tangled open curves whose knotting is not dominated by any single knot type, a behaviour we call weakly knotted. We compare cubically confined lattice walks and spherically confined id…
This article addresses the two significant aspects of Ozsváth and Szabó's knot Floer cube of resolutions that differentiate it from Khovanov and Rozansky's HOMFLY-PT chain complex: (1) the use of twisted coefficients and (2) the appearance of a mysterious non-local ideal. Our goal is to facilitate progress on Rasmussen's conjecture that a spectral sequence relates the two knot homologies. We replace the language of twisted coefficients with the more quantum topological language of framings on trivalent graphs. We define a homology theory for framed trivalent graphs with boundary that -- for a …
This paper considers "geometric" ideal triangulations of cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds, i.e. decompositions into positive volume ideal hyperbolic tetrahedra. We exhibit infinitely many geometric ideal triangulations of the figure eight knot complement. As far as we know, this is the first construction of infinitely many geometric triangulations of a cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold. In contrast, our approach does not extend to the figure eight sister manifold, and it is unknown if there are infinitely many geometric triangulations for this manifold.
Motivated by the theory of quantum A-ideals of Frohman-Gelca-LoFaro, the theory of q-holonomicity of quantum invariants of Garoufalidis-Le and the AJ conjecture of Garoufalidis, Sikora formulated the strong AJ conjecture which relates the A-ideal and recurrence ideal of a knot in the 3-sphere. This conjecture has been verified for all torus knots and most of their cables. In this paper, we verify the strong AJ conjecture for the figure eight knot.

In this note, we attempt to find counterexamples to the conjecture that the ideal form of a knot, that which minimizes its contour length while respecting a no-overlap constraint, also minimizes the volume of the knot, as determined by its convex hull. We measure the convex hull volume of knots during the length annealing process, identifying local minima in the hull volume that arise due to buckling and symmetry breaking. We use T(p,2) torus knots as an illustrative example of a family of knots whose locally minimal-length embeddings are not necessarily ordered by volume. We identify several …
A Delta-groupoid is an algebraic structure which axiomitizes the combinatorics of a truncated tetrahedron. It is shown that there are relations of Delta-groupoids to rings, group pairs, and (ideal) triangulations of three-manifolds. In particular, one can associate a Delta-groupoid to ideal triangulations of knot complements. It is also possible to define a homology theory of Delta-groupoids. The constructions are illustrated by examples coming from knot theory.
The paper contains the computation of the noncommutative A-ideal of the figure-eight knot, a noncommutative generalization of the A-polynomial. We show that if a knot has the same noncommutative A-ideal as the figure-eight knot, then all colored Kauffman brackets are the same as those of the figure-eight knot.
Divide knots and links, defined by A'Campo in the singularity theory of complex curves, is a method to present knots or links by real plane curves. The present paper is a continuation of the author's previous result that every knot in the major subfamilies of Berge's lens space surgery (i.e., knots yielding a lens space by Dehn surgery) is presented by an L-shaped curve as a divide knot. In the present paper, L-shaped curves are generalized and it is shown that every knot in the minor subfamilies, called sporadic examples, of Berge's lens space surgery is presented by a generalized L-shaped cu…
The Alexander biquandle of a virtual knot or link is a module over a 2-variable Laurent polynomial ring which is an invariant of virtual knots and links. The elementary ideals of this module are then invariants of virtual isotopy which determine both the generalized Alexander polynomial (also known as the Sawollek polynomial) for virtual knots and the classical Alexander polynomial for classical knots. For a fixed monomial ordering $<$, the Gröbner bases for these ideals are computable, comparable invariants which fully determine the elementary ideals and which generalize and unify the classic…
We generalize the $F_K$ invariant, i.e. $\widehat{Z}$ for the complement of a knot $K$ in the 3-sphere, the knots-quivers correspondence, and $A$-polynomials of knots, and find several interconnections between them. We associate an $F_K$ invariant to any branch of the $A$-polynomial of $K$ and we work out explicit expressions for several simple knots. We show that these $F_K$ invariants can be written in the form of a quiver generating series, in analogy with the knots-quivers correspondence. We discuss various methods to obtain such quiver representations, among others using $R$-matrices. We …
We construct a new infinite family of ideal triangulations and H-triangulations for the complements of twist knots, using a method originating from Thurston. These triangulations provide a new upper bound for the Matveev complexity of twist knot complements. We then prove that these ideal triangulations are geometric. The proof uses techniques of Futer and the second author, which consist in studying the volume functional on the polyhedron of angle structures. Finally, we use these triangulations to compute explicitly the partition function of the Teichmüller TQFT and to prove the associated v…
In previous joint work with Frohman and Lofaro a noncommutative generalization of the A-polynomial of a knot was introduced, consisting of a finitely generated ideal of polynomials (the noncommutative A-ideal) in the quantum plane. The present paper shows that the noncommutative A-ideal of a knot, together with finitely many of its colored Jones polynomials determines all other colored Jones polynomials. Also, for particular knots, such as the unknot and the trefoil, the noncommutative A-ideal completely determines all colored Jones polynomials.
The Frohman Kania-Bartoszynska ideal is an invariant associated to a 3-manifold with boundary and a prime p >3. We give some estimates of this ideal. We also calculate this invariant for some 3-manifolds constructed by doing surgery on a knot in the complement of another knot.
It is known that a knot complement can be decomposed into ideal octahedra along a knot diagram. A solution to the gluing equations applied to this decomposition gives a pseudo-developing map of the knot complement, which will be called a pseudo-hyperbolic structure. In this paper, we study these in terms of segment and region variables which are motivated by the volume conjecture so that we can compute complex volumes of all the boundary parabolic representations explicitly. We investigate the octahedral developing and holonomy representation carefully, and obtain a concrete formula of Wirting…
In hep-th/9805025, a result for the symmetric 3-loop massive tetrahedron in 3 dimensions was found, using the lattice algorithm PSLQ. Here we give a more general formula, involving 3 distinct masses. A proof is devised, though it cannot be accounted as a derivation; rather it certifies that an Ansatz found by PSLQ satisfies a more easily derived pair of partial differential equations. The result is similar to Schläfli's formula for the volume of a bi-rectangular hyperbolic tetrahedron, revealing a novel connection between 3-loop diagrams and 1-loop boxes. We show that each reduces to a common …
Let $K$ be a knot in the 3-sphere, viewed as the ideal boundary of hyperbolic 4-space $\mathbb{H}^4$. We prove that the number of minimal discs in $\mathbb{H}^4$ with ideal boundary $K$ is a knot invariant. I.e.\ the number is finite and doesn't change under isotopies of $K$. In fact this gives a family of knot invariants, indexed by an integer describing the extrinsic topology of how the disc sits in $\mathbb{H}^4$. These invariants can be seen as Gromov--Witten invariants counting $J$-holomorphic discs in the twistor space $Z$ of $\mathbb{H}^4$. Whilst Gromov--Witten theory suggests the gene…
This is a sequel to the authors' article [BKO](arXiv:1901.02239). We consider a hyperbolic knot $K$ in a closed 3-manifold $M$ and the cotangent bundle of its complement $M \setminus K$. We equip $M \setminus K$ with a hyperbolic metric $h$ and its cotangent bundle $T^*(M \setminus K)$ with the induced kinetic energy Hamiltonian $H_h = \frac{1}{2} |p|_h^2$ and Sasakian almost complex structure $J_h$, and associate a wrapped Fukaya category to $T^*(M\setminus K)$ whose wrapping is given by $H_h$. We then consider the conormal $ν^*T$ of a horo-torus $T$ as its object. We prove that all non-const…
A horospherical torus about a cusp of a hyperbolic manifold inherits a Euclidean similarity structure, called a cusp shape. We bound the change in cusp shape when the hyperbolic structure of the manifold is deformed via cone deformation preserving the cusp. The bounds are in terms of the change in structure in a neighborhood of the singular locus alone. We then apply this result to provide information on the cusp shape of many hyperbolic knots, given only a diagram of the knot. Specifically, we show there is a universal constant C such that if a knot admits a prime, twist reduced diagram with …
Kirchhoff energy is a classical functional on the space of arclength-parameterized framed curves whose critical points approximate configurations of springy elastic rods. We introduce a generalized functional on the space of framed curves of arbitrary parameterization, which model rods with axial stretch or cross-sectional inflation. Our main result gives explicit parameterizations for all periodic critical framed curves for this generalized functional. The main technical tool is a correspondence between the moduli space of shape similarity classes of closed framed curves and an infinite-dimen…
Let G be a simple complex algebraic group and g its Lie algebra. We show that the g-Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev quantum invariants determine a deformation-quantization, C_q[X_G(torus)], of the coordinate ring of the G-character variety of the torus. We prove that this deformation is in the direction of the Goldman's bracket. Furthermore, we show that every knot K defines an ideal I_K in C_q[X_G(torus)]. We conjecture that the homomorphism C_q[X_G(torus)] -> C[X_G(torus)], q -> 1, maps I_K to the ideal whose radical is the kernel of the map C[X_G(torus)] -> C[X_G(S^3 K)]. This conjecture is relat…
The problem of finding robust and effective methods for locating entanglement in embedded curves is relevant to both applications and theoretical investigations. Rather than focusing on an exact determination, we introduce the knot intensity distribution, a local quantifier for the contribution of a curve's region to global entanglement. The integral of the distribution yields a measure of tightness for knots. We compute the distribution for ideal knots, and study its behaviour on prime and composite random knots. Intensity distributions provide an effective method to locate entanglement. In p…
We define enhancements of the quandle counting invariant for knots and links with a finite labeling quandle Q embedded in the quandle of units of a Lie algebra \mathfrak{a} using Lie ideals. We provide examples demonstrating that the enhancement is stronger than the associated unenhanced counting invariant.
It is proved that every knot in the major subfamilies of J. Berge's lens space surgery (i.e., knots yielding a lens space by Dehn surgery) is presented by an L-shaped (real) plane curve as a "divide knot" defined by N. A'Campo in the context of singularity theory of complex curves. For each knot given by Berge's parameters, the corresponding plane curve is constructed. The surgery coefficients are also considered. Such presentations support us to study each knot itself, and the relationship among the knots in the set of lens space surgeries.
A Delta-groupoid is an algebraic structure which axiomatizes the combinatorics of a truncated tetrahedron. By considering two simplest examples coming from knot theory, we illustrate how can one associate a Delta-groupoid to an ideal triangulation of a three-manifold. We also describe in detail the rings associated with the Delta-groupoids of these examples.
The coefficients of twisted Alexander polynomials of a knot induce regular functions of the $SL_2(\mathbb{C})$-character variety. We prove that the function of the highest degree has a finite value at an ideal point which gives a minimal genus Seifert surface by Culler-Shalen theory. It implies a partial affirmative answer to a conjecture by Dunfield, Friedl and Jackson.
We formalize the arithmetic topology, i.e. a relationship between knots and primes. Namely, using the notion of a cluster C*-algebra we construct a functor from the category of 3-dimensional manifolds M to a category of algebraic number fields K, such that the prime ideals (ideals, resp.) in the ring of integers of K correspond to knots (links, resp.) in M. It is proved that the functor realizes all axioms of the arithmetic topology conjectured in the 1960's by Manin, Mazur and Mumford.
In this work we present a complete (no misses, no duplicates) census for closed, connected, orientable and prime 3-manifolds induced by plane graphs with a bipartition of its edge set (blinks) up to $k=9$ edges. Blinks form a universal encoding for such manifolds. In fact, each such a manifold is a subtle class of blinks, \cite{lins2013B}. Blinks are in 1-1 correpondence with {\em blackboard framed links}, \cite {kauffman1991knots, kauffman1994tlr} We hope that this census becomes as useful for the study of concrete examples of 3-manifolds as the tables of knots are in the study of knots and l…
