Roughly speaking, a near-best (abbr. NB) quasi-interpolant (abbr. QI) is an approximation operator of the form $Q_af=\sum_{α\in A} Λ_α(f) B_α$ where the $B_α$'s are B-splines and the $Λ_α(f)$'s are linear discrete or integral forms acting on the given function $f$. These forms depend on a finite number of coefficients which are the components of vectors $a_α$ for $α\in A$. The index $a$ refers to this sequence of vectors. In order that $Q_a p=p$ for all polynomials $p$ belonging to some subspace included in the space of splines generated by the $B_α$'s, each vector $a_α$ must lie in an affine subspace $V_α$, i.e. satisfy some linear constraints. However there remain some degrees of freedom which are used to minimize $\Vert a_α\Vert_1$ for each $α\in A$. It is easy to prove that $\max \{\Vert a_α\Vert_1 ; α\in A\}$ is an upper bound of $\Vert Q_a \Vert_{\infty}$: thus, instead of minimizing the infinite norm of $Q_a$, which is a difficult problem, we minimize an upper bound of this norm, which is much easier to do. Moreover, the latter problem has always at least one solution, which is associated with a NB QI. In the first part of the paper, we give a survey on NB univariate or bivariate spline QIs defined on uniform or non-uniform partitions and already studied by the author and coworkers. In the second part, we give some new results, mainly on univariate and bivariate integral QIs on {\sl non-uniform} partitions: in that case, NB QIs are more difficult to characterize and the optimal properties strongly depend on the geometry of the partition. Therefore we have restricted our study to QIs having interesting shape properties and/or infinite norms uniformly bounded independently of the partition.
Nowadays, fractional differential equations are a well established tool to model phenomena from the real world. Since the analytical solution is rarely available, there is a great effort in constructing efficient numerical methods for their solution. In this paper we are interested in solving boundary value problems having space derivative of fractional order. To this end, we present a collocation method in which the solution of the fractional problem is approximated by a spline quasi-interpolant operator. This allows us to construct the numerical solution in an easy way. We show through some …
Spline interpolation has been used in several applications due to its favorable properties regarding smoothness and accuracy of the interpolant. However, when there exists a discontinuity or a steep gradient in the data, some artifacts can appear due to the Gibbs phenomenon. Also, preservation of data monotonicity is a requirement in some applications, and that property is not automatically verified by the interpolator. In this paper, we study sufficient conditions to obtain monotone cubic splines based on Hermite cubic interpolators and propose different ways to construct them using non-linea…
In simulation technology, computationally expensive objective functions are often replaced by cheap surrogates, which can be obtained by interpolation. Full grid interpolation methods suffer from the so-called curse of dimensionality, rendering them infeasible if the parameter domain of the function is higher-dimensional (four or more parameters). Sparse grids constitute a discretization method that drastically eases the curse, while the approximation quality deteriorates only insignificantly. However, conventional basis functions such as piecewise linear functions are not smooth (continuously…
In this paper we present a new class of cubature rules with the aim of accurately integrating weakly singular double integrals. In particular we focus on those integrals coming from the discretization of Boundary Integral Equations for 3D Laplace boundary value problems, using a collocation method within the Isogeometric Analysis paradigm. In such setting the regular part of the integrand can be defined as the product of a tensor product B-spline and a general function. The rules are derived by using first the spline quasi-interpolation approach to approximate such function and then the extens…
We present a new refinement strategy for locally refined B-splines which ensures the local linear independence of the basis functions. The strategy also guarantees the spanning of the full spline space on the underlying locally refined mesh. The resulting mesh has nice grading properties which grant the preservation of shape regularity and local quasi uniformity of the elements in the refining process.
The paper presents a versatile library of quasi-analytic complex-valued wavelet packets (WPs) which originate from polynomial splines of arbitrary orders. The real parts of the quasi-analytic WPs are the regular spline-based orthonormal WPs designed in [1]. The imaginary parts are the so-called complementary orthonormal WPs that are derived from the Hilbert transforms of the regular WPs and, unlike the symmetric regular WPs, are antisymmetric. Tensor products of 1D quasi-analytic WPs provide a diversity of 2D WPs oriented in multiple directions. For example, a set of the fourth-level WPs compr…

The library QIBSH++ is a C++ object oriented library for the solution of Quasi Interpolation problems. The library is based on a Hermite Quasi Interpolating operator, which was derived as continuous extensions of linear multistep methods applied for the numerical solution of Boundary Value Problems for Ordinary Differential Equations. The library includes the possibility to use Hermite data or to apply a finite difference scheme for derivative approximations, when derivative values are not directly available. The generalization of the quasi interpolation procedure to surfaces and volumes appro…

Isogeometric Analysis is a spline-based discretization method to partial differential equations which shows the approximation power of a high-order method. The number of degrees of freedom, however, is as small as the number of degrees of freedom of a low-order method. This does not come for free as the original formulation of Isogeometric Analysis requires a global geometry function. Since this is too restrictive for many kinds of applications, the domain is usually decomposed into patches, where each patch is parameterized with its own geometry function. In simpler cases, the patches can be …
Human brain activity is based on electrochemical processes, which can only be measured invasively. Therefore, quantities such as magnetic flux density (MEG) or electric potential differences (EEG) are measured non-invasively in medicine and research. The reconstruction of the neuronal current from the measurements is a severely ill-posed problem though its visualization is one of the main research tools in cognitive neuroscience. Here, using an isotropic multiple-shell model for the geometry of the head and a quasi-static approach for modeling the electro-magnetic processes, we derive a novel …
