The univariate spline quasi-interpolants (abbr. QIs) studied in this paper are approximation operators using B-spline expansions with coefficients which are linear combinations of discrete or weighted mean values of the function to be approximated. When working with nonuniform partitions, the main challenge is to find QIs which have both good approximation orders and uniform norms which are bounded independently of the given partition. Near-best QIs are obtained by minimizing an upper bound of the infinity norm of QIs depending on a certain number of free parameters, thus reducing this norm. This paper is devoted to the study of two families of near-best QIs of approximation order 3.
In this paper I uncover and explain---using contour integrals and residues---a connection between cubic splines and a popular compact finite difference formula. The connection is that on a uniform mesh the simplest Padé scheme for generating fourth-order accurate compact finite differences gives \textsl{exactly} the derivatives at the interior nodes needed to guarantee twice-continuous differentiability for cubic splines. %I found this connection surprising, because the two problems being solved are different. I also introduce an apparently new spline-like interpolant that I call a compact cub…
Nowadays, fractional differential equations are a well established tool to model phenomena from the real world. Since the analytical solution is rarely available, there is a great effort in constructing efficient numerical methods for their solution. In this paper we are interested in solving boundary value problems having space derivative of fractional order. To this end, we present a collocation method in which the solution of the fractional problem is approximated by a spline quasi-interpolant operator. This allows us to construct the numerical solution in an easy way. We show through some …
The construction of smooth spatial paths with Pythagorean-hodograph (PH) quintic spline biarcs is proposed. To facilitate real-time computations of $C^2$ PH quintic splines, an efficient local data stream interpolation algorithm is introduced. Each spline segment interpolates second and first order Hermite data at the initial and final end-point, respectively. In the spline extension of the scheme a $C^2$ smooth connection between successive spline segments is obtained by taking the locally required second-order derivative information from the previous segment. Consequently, the data stream sp…
In simulation technology, computationally expensive objective functions are often replaced by cheap surrogates, which can be obtained by interpolation. Full grid interpolation methods suffer from the so-called curse of dimensionality, rendering them infeasible if the parameter domain of the function is higher-dimensional (four or more parameters). Sparse grids constitute a discretization method that drastically eases the curse, while the approximation quality deteriorates only insignificantly. However, conventional basis functions such as piecewise linear functions are not smooth (continuously…
