This is a substantial revision and expansion of the 2004 preprint, which I prepared in spring of 2010 and which has since been published. The version here is essentially the published one, minus the problems introduced by Springer production

We survey the definitions and some important properties of several asymptotic invariants of smooth manifolds, and discuss some open questions related to them. We prove that the (non-)vanishing of the minimal volume is a differentiable property, which is not invariant under homeomorphisms. We also formulate an obstruction to the existence of Einstein metrics on four-manifolds involving the volume entropy. This generalizes both the Gromov--Hitchin--Thorpe inequality and Sambusetti's obstruction.
In this paper we discuss Perelman's Lambda-functional, Perelman's Ricci shrinker entropy as well as the Ricci expander entropy on a class of manifolds with isolated conical singularities. On such manifolds, a singular Ricci de Turck flow preserving the isolated conical singularities exists by our previous work. We prove that the entropies are monotone along the singular Ricci de Turck flow. We employ these entropies to show that in the singular setting, Ricci solitons are gradient and that steady or expanding Ricci solitons are Einstein.
We construct infinitely many examples of finite volume 4-manifolds with $T^3$ ends that do not admit any cusped asymptotically hyperbolic Einstein metrics yet satisfy a strict logarithmic version of the Hitchin-Thorpe inequality due to Dai-Wei. This is done by using estimates from Seiberg-Witten theory due to LeBrun as well as a method for constructing solutions to the Seiberg-Witten equations on noncompact manifolds due to Biquard. We also use constructions coming from the $Pin^-(2)$ monopole equations to obtain a larger class of manifolds where these techniques apply.
In this article, we provide some volume growth estimates for complete noncompact gradient Ricci solitons and quasi-Einstein manifolds similar to the classical results by Bishop, Calabi and Yau for complete Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. We prove a sharp volume growth estimate for complete noncompact gradient shrinking Ricci soliton. Moreover, we provide upper bound volume growth estimates for complete noncompact quasi-Einstein manifolds with $λ=0.$ In addition, we prove that geodesic balls of complete noncompact quasi-Einstein manifolds with $λ<0$ and $μ\leq 0$ have at …
We study the volume of compact Riemannian manifolds which are Einstein with respect to a metric connection with (parallel) skew-torsion. We provide a result for the sign of the first variation of the volume in terms of the corresponding scalar curvature. This generalizes a result of M. Ville, related with the first variation of the volume on a compact Einstein manifold.
The goal of this paper is to study weakly Einstein critical metrics of the volume functional on a compact manifold $M$ with smooth boundary $\partial M$. Here, we will give the complete classification for an $n$-dimensional, $n=3$ or $4,$ weakly Einstein critical metric of the volume functional with nonnegative scalar curvature. Moreover, in the higher dimensional case ($n\geq5$), we will established a similar result for weakly Einstein critical metric under a suitable constraint on the Weyl tensor.
A formula of the renormalized volume of tubes over polalized Kähler-Einstein manifolds is given in terms of the Einstein constant and the volume of the polarization.
We give an elementary proof to the asymptotic expansion formula of Rochon-Zhang for the unique complete Kähler-Einstein metric of Cheng-Yau, Kobayashi, Tian-Yau and Bando on quasi-projective manifolds. The main tools are the solution formula for second order ODE's with constant coefficients and spectral theory for Laplacian operator on a closed manifold.
We show that the anti-canonical volume of an $n$-dimensional Kähler-Einstein $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano variety is bounded from above by certain invariants of the local singularities, namely $\mathrm{lct}^n\cdot\mathrm{mult}$ for ideals and the normalized volume function for real valuations. This refines a recent result by Fujita. As an application, we get sharp volume upper bounds for Kähler-Einstein Fano varieties with quotient singularities. Based on very recent results by Li and the author, we show that a Fano manifold is K-semistable if and only if a de Fernex-Ein-Mustaţă type inequality holds on …
Extending earlier work of Tian, we show that if a manifold admits a metric that is almost hyperbolic in a suitable sense, then there exists an Einstein metric that is close to the given metric in the $C^{2,α}$-topology. In dimension $3$ the original manifold only needs to have finite volume, and the volume can be arbitrarily large. Applications include a new proof of the hyperbolization of $3$-manifolds of large Hempel distance yielding some new geometric control on the hyperbolic metric, and an analytic proof of Dehn filling and drilling that allows the filling and drilling of arbitrary many …
Let $M$ be a compact complex manifold admitting a Kähler structure. A conformally Kähler, Einstein-Maxwell metric (cKEM metric for short) is a Hermitian metric $\tilde{g}$ on $M$ with constant scalar curvature such that there is a positive smooth function $f$ with $g = f^2 \tilde{g}$ being a Kähler metric and $f$ being a Killing Hamiltonian potential with respect to $g$. Fixing a Kähler class, we characterize such Killing vector fields whose Hamiltonian function $f$ with respect to some Kähler metric $g$ in the fixed Kähler class gives a cKEM metric $\tilde{g} = f^{-2}g$. The characterization …
We show that transverse coupled Kähler-Einstein metrics on toric Sasaki manifolds arise as a critical point of a volume functional. As a preparation for the proof, we re-visit the transverse moment polytopes and contact moment polytopes under the change of Reeb vector fields. Then we apply it to a coupled version of the volume minimization by Martelli-Sparks-Yau. This is done assuming the Calabi-Yau condition of the Kähler cone, and the non-coupled case leads to a known existence result of a transverse Kähler-Einstein metric and a Sasaki-Einstein metric, but the coupled case requires an assump…
In this paper, we show that for a Poincaré-Einstein manifold $(X^{n+1},g_+)$ with conformal infinity $(M,[\hat{g}])$ of nonnegative Yamabe type, the fractional Yamabe constants of the boundary provide lower bounds for the relative volume. More explicitly, for any $γ\in (0,1)$, $$ \left(\frac{Y_{2γ} (M,[\hat{g}])}{Y_{2γ} (\mathbb{S}^n , [g_{\mathbb{S}}])}\right)^{\frac{n}{2γ}} \leq \frac{V(Γ_t(p),g_+)}{V(Γ_t(0),g_{\mathbb{H}})} \leq \frac{V( B_t(p),g_+)}{V( B_t(0), g_{\mathbb{H}})} \leq 1,\quad 0<t<\infty, $$ where $B_t(p)$, $Γ_t(p)$ are the the geodesic ball and geodesic sphere of radius $t$ i…
There is an obstruction to the existence of Kähler -Einstein metrics which is used to define the GIT weight for K-stability, and it has been extended to various geometric problems. This survey paper considers such extended obstructions to the existence problem of Kähler -Ricci solitons, Sasaki-Einstein metrics and (conformally) Einstein-Maxwell Kähler metrics. These three cases have a common feature that the obstructions are parametrized by a space of vector fields. We see, in these three cases, the obstructions are obtained as the derivative of suitable volume functionals. This tells us for w…
We prove that if a $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano variety $V$ specially degenerates to a Kähler-Einstein $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano variety $V$, then for any ample Cartier divisor $H=-r^{-1} K_V$ with $r\in \mathbb{Q}_{>0}$, the normalized volume $\widehat{\rm vol}(v)=A_{\mathcal{C}}^n(v)\cdot {\rm vol}(v)$ is globally minimized at the canonical valuation ${\rm ord}_V$ among all real valuations which are centered at the vertex of the affine cone $\mathcal{C}:=C(V,H)$. This is also generalized to the logarithmic and the orbifold setting. As a consequence, we complete the confirmation of a conjecture in [arXiv:1511.0…
The purpose of this paper is to extend the mean curvature comparison and volume comparison estimates by Petersen, Sprouse, and Wei to integral generalized quasi-Einstein tensor. Moreover, we use our comparison results to get global diameter estimate.
In this work we are interested in studying deformations of the $σ_2$-curvature and the volume. For closed manifolds, we relate critical points of the total $σ_2$-curvature functional to the $σ_2$-Einstein metrics and, as a consequence of results of H. J. Gursky and J. A. Viaclovsky (2001) and Z. Hu and H. Li (2004), we obtain a sufficient and necessary condition for a critical metric to be Einstein. Moreover, we show a volume comparison result for Einstein manifolds with respect to $σ_2$-curvature which shows that the volume can be controlled by the $σ_2$-curvature under certain conditions. Ne…
In this paper, we study the weakly weighted Einstein-Finsler metrics. First, we show that weakly weighted Einstein-Kropina metrics must be of isotropic S-curvature with respect to the Busemann-Hausdorff volume form under a certain condition about the weight constants. Then we characterize weakly weighted Einstein-Kropina metrics completely via their navigation expressions or via $α$ and $β$ respectively.
Weighted Ricci curvatures with various weights of the S-curvature have played an important role in Finsler geometry, especially in the control of volumes of Finsler manifolds. In this paper, we study general weighted Ricci curvatures, and characterize Randers metrics of almost isotropic weighted Ricci curvatures.
An Einstein manifold is called scalar curvature rigid if there are no compactly supported volume-preserving deformation of the metric which increase the scalar curvature. We give various characterizations of scalar curvature rigidity for open Einstein manifolds as well as for closed Einstein manifolds. As an application, we construct mass-decreasing perturbations of the Riemannian Schwarzschild metric and the Taub-Bolt metric.
Let $\mathcal{K}(n, V)$ be the set of $n$-dimensional compact Kahler-Einstein manifolds $(X, g)$ satisfying $Ric(g)= - g$ with volume bounded above by $V$. We prove that after passing to a subsequence, any sequence $\{ (X_j, g_j)\}_{j=1}^\infty$ in $\mathcal{K}(n, V)$ converges, in the pointed Gromov-Hausdorff topology, to a finite union of complete Kahler-Einstein metric spaces without loss of volume. The convergence is smooth off a closed singular set of Hausdorff dimension no greater than $2n-4$, and the limiting metric space is biholomorphic to an $n$-dimensional semi-log canonical model w…
We derive a new renormalized volume formula for conformally compact asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds in dimension four. The formula generalizes the ones given by Anderson, Albin, and Chang-Qing-Yang for the case of Poincare-Einstein manifolds. We also derive variational formulas for the renormalized seen as a functional on the manifold.
In this paper, we prove an existence result for Kähler-Einstein metrics on $\mathbb Q$-Fano compactifications of Lie groups. As an application, we classify $\mathbb Q$-Fano compactifications of $SO_4(\mathbb C)$ which admit a Kähler-Einstein metric with the same volume as that of a smooth Fano compactification of $SO_4(\mathbb C)$.
