We extend the method of layer potentials to manifolds with boundary and cylindrical ends. To obtain this extension along the classical lines, we have to deal with several technical difficulties due to the non-compactness of the boundary, which prevents us from using the standard characterization of Fredholm and compact (pseudo-)differential operators between Sobolev spaces. Our approach, which involves the study of layer potentials depending on a parameter on compact manifolds as an intermediate step, yields the invertibility of the relevant boundary integral operators in the global, non-compact setting, which is rather unexpected. As an application, we prove the well-posedness of the non-homogeneous Dirichlet problem on manifolds with boundary and cylindrical ends. We also prove the existence of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, which we show to be a pseudodifferential operator in the calculus of pseudodifferential operators that are ``almost translation invariant at infinity,'' a calculus that is closely related to Melrose's b-calculus \cite{me81, meaps}, which we study in this paper. The proof of the convergence of the layer potentials and of the existence of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map are based on a good understanding of resolvents of elliptic operators that are translation invariant at infinity.
We give a short, simple proof of maximal regularity for linear parabolic evolution equations on manifolds with cylindrical ends by making use of pseudodifferential parametrices and the concept of R-boundedness for the resolvent.
We study an inverse problem for a non-compact Riemannian manifold whose ends have the following properties : On each end, the Riemannian metric is assumed to be a short-range perturbation of the metric of the form $(dy)^2 + h(x,dx)$, $h(x,dx)$ being the metric of some compact manifold of codimension 1. Moreover one end is exactly cylindrical, i.e. the metric is equal to $(dy)^2 + h(x,dx)$. Given two such manifolds having the same scattering matrix on that exactly cylindrical end for all energy, we show that these two manifolds are isometric.
Taubes' gluing theorems establish the existence of ASD connections on closed, oriented 4-manifolds. We extend these gluing results to the mASD connections of Morgan-Mrowka-Ruberman on oriented 4-manifolds with cylindrical ends. As a corollary, we obtain an ASD-existence result in the presence of degenerate asymptotic flat connections.
The general self-adjoint elliptic boundary value problems are considered in a domain $G\subset \Bbb R^{n+1}$ with finitely many cylindrical ends. The coefficients are stabilizing (as $x\to\infty$, $x\in G$) so slowly that we can only describe some ``structure'' of solutions far from the origin. This problem may be understood as a model of ``generalized branching waveguide.'' We introduce a notion of the energy flow through the cross-sections of the cylindrical ends and define outgoing and incoming ``waves.'' An augmented scattering matrix is introduced. Analyzing the spectrum of this matrix on…
We construct a surface with a cylindrical end which has a finite number of Laplace eigenvalues embedded in its continuous spectrum. The surface is obtained by attaching a cylindrical end to a hyperbolic torus with a hole. To our knowledge, this is the first example of a manifold with a cylindrical end whose number of eigenvalues is known to be finite and nonzero. The construction can be varied to give examples with arbitrary genus and with an arbitrarily large finite number of eigenvalues. The constructed surfaces also have resonance-free regions near the continuous spectrum and long-time asym…
We show that for a Schrödinger operator with bounded potential on a manifold with cylindrical ends the space of solutions which grows at most exponentially at infinity is finite dimensional and, for a dense set of potentials (or, equivalently for a surface, for a fixed potential and a dense set of metrics), the constant function zero is the only solution that vanishes at infinity. Clearly, for general potentials there can be many solutions that vanish at infinity. These results follow from a three circles inequality (or log convexity inequality) for the Sobolev norm of a solution $u$ to a Schr…
In this paper we continue our study of the Laplacian on manifolds with axial analytic asymptotically cylindrical ends initiated in~arXiv:1003.2538. By using the complex scaling method and the Phragmén-Lindelöf principle we prove exponential decay of the eigenfunctions corresponding to the non-threshold eigenvalues of the Laplacian on functions. In the case of a manifold with (non-compact) boundary it is either the Dirichlet Laplacian or the Neumann Laplacian. We show that the rate of exponential decay of an eigenfunction is prescribed by the distance from the corresponding eigenvalue to the ne…
Scattering theory for p-forms on manifolds with cylindrical ends has a direct interpretation in terms of cohomology. Using the Hodge isomorphism, the scattering matrix at low energy may be regarded as operator on the cohomology of the boundary. Its value at zero describes the image of the absolute cohomology in the cohomology of the boundary. We show that the so-called scattering length, the Eisenbud-Wigner time delay at zero energy, has a cohomological interpretation as well. Namely, it relates the norm of a cohomology class on the boundary to the norm of its image under the connecting homomor…
For certain non compact Riemannian manifolds with ends, we obtain Littlewood-Paley type estimates on (weighted) Lp spaces, using the usual square function defined by a dyadic partition.
We investigate properties of pseudodifferential operators on $L^2$ space on manifold with ends including asymptotically conical or hyperbolic ends. Our pseudodifferential operators are a generalization of the canonical quantization which naturally appears in the quantum mechanics on curved spaces. We prove a Calderón-Vaillancourt type theorem for our pseudodifferential operators and discuss a construction of parametrix of elliptic differential operators on manifolds with ends.
For a class of non compact Riemannian manifolds with ends, we give pseudo-differential expansions of bounded functions of the semi-classical Laplacian and study related Lp boundedness properties.
We study the decay of the global energy for the damped Klein-Gordon equation on non-compact manifolds with finitely many cylindrical and subconic ends up to bounded perturbation. We prove that under the Geometric Control Condition, the decay is exponential, and that under the weaker Network Control Condition, the decay is logarithmic, by developing the global Carleman estimate with multiple weights.
We investigate general Shapiro-Lopatinsky elliptic boundary value problems on manifolds with polycylindrical ends. This is accomplished by compactifying such a manifold to a manifold with corners of in general higher codimension, and we then deal with boundary value problems for cusp differential operators. We introduce an adapted Boutet de Monvel's calculus of pseudodifferential boundary value problems, and construct parametrices for elliptic cusp operators within this calculus. Fredholm solvability and elliptic regularity up to the boundary and up to infinity for boundary value problems on m…
We give a topological interpretation of the space of $L^2$-harmonic forms on Manifold with flat ends. It is an answer to an old question of J. Dodziuk. We also give a Chern-Gauss-Bonnet formula for the $L^2$-Euler characteristic of some of these Manifolds. These results are applications of general theorems on complete Riemannian Manifold whose Gauss-Bonnet operator is non-parabolic at infinity.
We study a particular class of open manifolds. In the category of Riemannian manifolds these are complete manifolds with cylindrical ends. We give a natural setting for the conformal geometry on such manifolds including an appropriate notion of the cylindrical Yamabe constant/invariant. This leads to a corresponding version of the Yamabe problem on cylindrical manifolds. We affirmatively solve this Yamabe problem: we prove the existence of minimizing metrics and analyze their singularities near infinity. These singularities turn out to be of very particular type: either almost conical or almos…
We construct a parametrix of a resolvent of elliptic differential operators acting on half-densities on manifolds with ends. The construction is carried out by introducing suitable pseudodifferential operators compatible with the end structure. Our class of pseudodifferential operators and symbols is independent of the choice of Riemannian metric on the manifold and applicable to both of asymptotically conical and hyperbolic manifolds. As an application, we prove the essential self-adjointness of elliptic symmetric differential operators on manifolds.
Global in time dispersive estimates for the Schroedinger and wave evolutions are obtained on manifolds with conical ends whose Hamiltonian flow exhibits trapping. This paper deals with the case of initial data with fixed "nonzero angular momentum".
We study a time-dependent scattering theory for Schrödinger operators on a manifold with asymptotically polynomially growing ends. We use the Mourre theory to show the spectral properties of self-adjoint second-order elliptic operators. We prove the existence and the asymptotic completeness of wave operators using the smooth perturbation theory of Kato. We also consider a two-space scattering with a simple reference system.
We prove a microlocal smoothing effect of Schrödinger equations on manifolds. We employ radially homogeneous wavefront sets introduced by Ito and Nakamura (Amer. J. Math., 2009). In terms of radially homogeneous wavefront sets, we can apply our theory to both of asymptotically conical and hyperbolic manifolds. We relate wavefront sets in initial states to radially homogeneous wavefront sets in states after a time development. We also prove a relation between radially homogeneous wavefront sets and homogeneous wavefront sets and prove a special case of Nakamura (2005).
Let $M$ be a manifold with ends constructed in \cite{GS} and $Δ$ be the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $M$. In this note, we show the weak type $(1,1)$ and $L^p$ boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function and of the maximal function associated with the heat semigroup $\M_Δf(x)=\sup_{t> 0} |\exp (-tΔ)f(x)| $ on $L^p(M)$ for $1 < p \le \infty$. The significance of these results comes from the fact that $M$ does not satisfies the doubling condition.
Global in time dispersive estimates for the Schroedinger and wave evolutions are obtained on manifolds with conical ends whose Hamiltonian flow exhibits trapping. This paper deals with the case of initial data with "zero angular momentum".
We prove that in a certain class of conformal data on an asymptotically cylindrical manifold, if the conformally decomposed Einstein constraint equations do not admit a solution, then one can always find a nontrivial solution to the limit equation first explored by Dahl, Gicquaud, and Humbert in [DGH11]. We also give an example of a Ricci curvature condition on the manifold which precludes the existence of a solution to this limit equation, showing that such a limit criterion can be a useful tool for studying the Einstein constraint equations on manifolds with asymptotically cylindrical ends.
A concrete model for a 7-dimensional gauge theory under special holonomy is proposed, within the paradigm outlined by Donaldson and Thomas, over the asymptotically cylindrical G2-manifolds provided by Kovalev's noncompact version of the Calabi conjecture. One obtains a solution to the $G_2$-instanton equation from the associated Hermitian Yang-Mills problem, to which the methods of Simpson et al. are applied, subject to a crucial asymptotic stability assumption over the "boundary at infinity".
We study the de Rham complex on a smooth manifold with a periodic end modeled on an infinite cyclic cover X' \to X. The completion of this complex in exponentially weighted L^2-norms is Fredholm for all but finitely many exceptional weights determined by the eigenvalues of the covering translation map H_*(X') \to H_*(X'). We calculate the index of this weighted de Rham complex for all weights away from the exceptional ones.
It has been showed by Byde that it is possible to attach a Delaunay-type end to a compact nondegenerate manifold of positive constant scalar curvature, provided it is locally conformally flat in a neighborhood of the attaching point. The resulting manifold is noncompact with the same constant scalar curvature. The main goal of this paper is to generalize this result. We will construct a one-parameter family of solutions to the positive singular Yamabe problem for any compact non-degenerate manifold with Weyl tensor vanishing to sufficiently high order at the singular point. If the dimension is…
We prove that the deformation theory of compactifiable asymptotically cylindrical Calabi-Yau manifolds is unobstructed. This relies on a detailed study of the Dolbeault-Hodge theory and its description in terms of the cohomology of the compactification. We also show that these Calabi-Yau metrics admit a polyhomogeneous expansion at infinity, a result that we extend to asymptotically conical Calabi-Yau metrics as well. We then study the moduli space of Calabi-Yau deformations that fix the complex structure at infinity. There is a Weil-Petersson metric on this space which we show is Kähler. By p…
In the framework of time-dependent geometric scattering theory, we study the existence and completeness of the wave operators for perturbations of the Riemannian metric for the Laplacian on a complete manifold of dimension $n$. The smallness condition for the perturbation is expressed (intrinsically and coordinate free) in purely geometric terms using the harmonic radius; therefore, the size of the perturbation can be controlled in terms of local bounds on the injectivity radius and the Ricci-curvature. As an application of these ideas we obtain a stability result for the scattering matrix wit…
Let $M$ be a smooth Riemannian manifold which is the union of a compact part and a finite number of Euclidean ends, $\RR^n \setminus B(0,R)$ for some $R > 0$, each of which carries the standard metric. Our main result is that the Riesz transform on $M$ is bounded from $L^p(M) \to L^p(M; T^*M)$ for $1 < p < n$ and unbounded for $p \geq n$ if there is more than one end. It follows from known results that in such a case the Riesz transform on $M$ is bounded for $1 < p \leq 2$ and unbounded for $p > n$; the result is new for $2 < p \leq n$. We also give some heat kernel estimates on such manifolds…
Based on our previous study [IS3] on the stationary scattering theory for the Schrodinger operator on a manifold possessing an escape function we complete our investigation by doing the time-dependent counterpart. A particular class of examples are manifolds with Euclidean and/or hyperbolic ends, possibly with unbounded and non-smooth obstacles. As an application we resolve a conjecture of [HPW] on cross-ends transmissions in its natural and strong form within the time-dependent framework.
We develop the complex scaling for a manifold with an asymptotically cylindrical end under an assumption on the analyticity of the metric with respect to the axial coordinate of the end. We allow for arbitrarily slow convergence of the metric to its limit at infinity, and prove a variant of the Aguilar-Balslev-Combes theorem for the Laplacian $Δ$ on functions. In the case of a manifold with (noncompact) boundary it is either the Dirichlet or the Neumann Laplacian. We introduce resonances as the discrete non-real eigenvalues of non-selfadjoint operators, obtained as deformations of the Laplacia…
Manifolds with infinite cylindrical ends have continuous spectrum of increasing multiplicity as energy grows, and in general embedded resonances (resonances on the real line, embedded in the continuous spectrum) and embedded eigenvalues can accumulate at infinity. However, we prove that if geodesic trapping is sufficiently mild, then the number of embedded resonances and eigenvalues is finite, and moreover the cutoff resolvent is uniformly bounded at high energies. We obtain as a corollary the existence of resonance free regions near the continuous spectrum. We also obtain improved estimates w…
We study the rescaled mean curvature flow (MCF) of hypersurfaces that are global graphs over a fixed cylinder of arbitrary dimensions. We construct an explicit stable manifold for the rescaled MCF of finite codimensions in a suitable configuration space. For any initial hypersurface from this stable manifold, we construct a unique global solution to the rescaled MCF, and derive precise asymptotics for these solutions that are valid for all time. Using these asymptotics, we prove asymptotic stability of cylindrical singularities of arbitrary dimensions under generic initial perturbations. As a …
We study the microlocal properties of the scattering matrix associated to the semiclassical Schrödinger operator $P=h^2Δ_X+V$ on a Riemannian manifold with an infinite cylindrical end. The scattering matrix at $E=1$ is a linear operator $S=S_h$ defined on a Hilbert subspace of $L^2(Y)$ that parameterizes the continuous spectrum of $P$ at energy $1$. Here $Y$ is the cross section of the end of $X$, which is not necessarily connected. We show that, under certain assumptions, microlocally $S$ is a Fourier integral operator associated to the graph of the scattering map $κ:\mathcal{D}_κ\to T^*Y$, w…
Let $Δ$ be the Laplace--Beltrami operator acting on a non-doubling manifold with two ends $\mathbb R^m \sharp \mathcal R^n$ with $m > n \ge 3$. Let $\frak{h}_t(x,y)$ be the kernels of the semigroup $e^{-tΔ}$ generated by $Δ$. We say that a non-negative self-adjoint operator $L$ on $L^2(\mathbb R^m \sharp \mathcal R^n)$ has a heat kernel with upper bound of Gaussian type if the kernel $h_t(x,y)$ of the semigroup $e^{-tL}$ satisfies $ h_t(x,y) \le C \frak{h}_{αt}(x,y)$ for some constants $C$ and $α$. This class of operators includes the Schrödinger operator $L = Δ+ V$ where $V$ is an arbitrary n…
Consider a non-doubling manifold with ends $M = \mathfrak{R}^{n}\sharp\, {\mathbb R}^{m}$ where $\mathfrak{R}^n=\mathbb{R}^n\times \mathbb{S}^{m-n}$ for $m> n \ge 3$. We say that an operator $L$ has a generalised Poisson kernel if $\sqrt{ L}$ generates a semigroup $e^{-t\sqrt{L}}$ whose kernel $p_t(x,y)$ has an upper bound similar to the kernel of $e^{-t\sqrtΔ}$ where $Δ$ is the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $M$. An example for operators with generalised Gaussian bounds is the Schrödinger operator $L = Δ+ V$ where $V$ is an arbitrary non-negative locally integrable potential. In this paper, our…
A waveguide coincides with a three-dimensional domain G having finitely many cylindrical outlets to infinity; the boundary of G is smooth. In G, we consider the stationary Maxwell system with real spectral parameter k and identity matrices of dielectric and magnetic permittivity. The boundary of G is supposed to be perfectly conductive. In the presence of charges and currents we investigate the solvability of the corresponding boundary value problem supplemented with "intrinsic" radiation conditions at infinity. For all k in the continuous spectrum of the problem (including the thresholds and …
