We construct a surface with a cylindrical end which has a finite number of Laplace eigenvalues embedded in its continuous spectrum. The surface is obtained by attaching a cylindrical end to a hyperbolic torus with a hole. To our knowledge, this is the first example of a manifold with a cylindrical end whose number of eigenvalues is known to be finite and nonzero. The construction can be varied to give examples with arbitrary genus and with an arbitrarily large finite number of eigenvalues. The constructed surfaces also have resonance-free regions near the continuous spectrum and long-time asymptotic expansions of solutions to the wave equation.
In this paper we continue our study of the Laplacian on manifolds with axial analytic asymptotically cylindrical ends initiated in~arXiv:1003.2538. By using the complex scaling method and the Phragmén-Lindelöf principle we prove exponential decay of the eigenfunctions corresponding to the non-threshold eigenvalues of the Laplacian on functions. In the case of a manifold with (non-compact) boundary it is either the Dirichlet Laplacian or the Neumann Laplacian. We show that the rate of exponential decay of an eigenfunction is prescribed by the distance from the corresponding eigenvalue to the ne…
The general self-adjoint elliptic boundary value problems are considered in a domain $G\subset \Bbb R^{n+1}$ with finitely many cylindrical ends. The coefficients are stabilizing (as $x\to\infty$, $x\in G$) so slowly that we can only describe some ``structure'' of solutions far from the origin. This problem may be understood as a model of ``generalized branching waveguide.'' We introduce a notion of the energy flow through the cross-sections of the cylindrical ends and define outgoing and incoming ``waves.'' An augmented scattering matrix is introduced. Analyzing the spectrum of this matrix on…
We give a short, simple proof of maximal regularity for linear parabolic evolution equations on manifolds with cylindrical ends by making use of pseudodifferential parametrices and the concept of R-boundedness for the resolvent.
Taubes' gluing theorems establish the existence of ASD connections on closed, oriented 4-manifolds. We extend these gluing results to the mASD connections of Morgan-Mrowka-Ruberman on oriented 4-manifolds with cylindrical ends. As a corollary, we obtain an ASD-existence result in the presence of degenerate asymptotic flat connections.
We study an inverse problem for a non-compact Riemannian manifold whose ends have the following properties : On each end, the Riemannian metric is assumed to be a short-range perturbation of the metric of the form $(dy)^2 + h(x,dx)$, $h(x,dx)$ being the metric of some compact manifold of codimension 1. Moreover one end is exactly cylindrical, i.e. the metric is equal to $(dy)^2 + h(x,dx)$. Given two such manifolds having the same scattering matrix on that exactly cylindrical end for all energy, we show that these two manifolds are isometric.
Scattering theory for p-forms on manifolds with cylindrical ends has a direct interpretation in terms of cohomology. Using the Hodge isomorphism, the scattering matrix at low energy may be regarded as operator on the cohomology of the boundary. Its value at zero describes the image of the absolute cohomology in the cohomology of the boundary. We show that the so-called scattering length, the Eisenbud-Wigner time delay at zero energy, has a cohomological interpretation as well. Namely, it relates the norm of a cohomology class on the boundary to the norm of its image under the connecting homomor…
We show that for a Schrödinger operator with bounded potential on a manifold with cylindrical ends the space of solutions which grows at most exponentially at infinity is finite dimensional and, for a dense set of potentials (or, equivalently for a surface, for a fixed potential and a dense set of metrics), the constant function zero is the only solution that vanishes at infinity. Clearly, for general potentials there can be many solutions that vanish at infinity. These results follow from a three circles inequality (or log convexity inequality) for the Sobolev norm of a solution $u$ to a Schr…
We study a particular class of open manifolds. In the category of Riemannian manifolds these are complete manifolds with cylindrical ends. We give a natural setting for the conformal geometry on such manifolds including an appropriate notion of the cylindrical Yamabe constant/invariant. This leads to a corresponding version of the Yamabe problem on cylindrical manifolds. We affirmatively solve this Yamabe problem: we prove the existence of minimizing metrics and analyze their singularities near infinity. These singularities turn out to be of very particular type: either almost conical or almos…
Manifolds with infinite cylindrical ends have continuous spectrum of increasing multiplicity as energy grows, and in general embedded resonances (resonances on the real line, embedded in the continuous spectrum) and embedded eigenvalues can accumulate at infinity. However, we prove that if geodesic trapping is sufficiently mild, then the number of embedded resonances and eigenvalues is finite, and moreover the cutoff resolvent is uniformly bounded at high energies. We obtain as a corollary the existence of resonance free regions near the continuous spectrum. We also obtain improved estimates w…
Let $C\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ be a regular cone with vertex at the origin. In this paper, we show the uniqueness for smooth properly embedded self-shrinking ends in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ that are asymptotic to $C$. As an application, we prove that not every regular cone with vertex at the origin has a smooth complete properly embedded self-shrinker asymptotic to it.
We study the decay of the global energy for the damped Klein-Gordon equation on non-compact manifolds with finitely many cylindrical and subconic ends up to bounded perturbation. We prove that under the Geometric Control Condition, the decay is exponential, and that under the weaker Network Control Condition, the decay is logarithmic, by developing the global Carleman estimate with multiple weights.
We prove that in a certain class of conformal data on an asymptotically cylindrical manifold, if the conformally decomposed Einstein constraint equations do not admit a solution, then one can always find a nontrivial solution to the limit equation first explored by Dahl, Gicquaud, and Humbert in [DGH11]. We also give an example of a Ricci curvature condition on the manifold which precludes the existence of a solution to this limit equation, showing that such a limit criterion can be a useful tool for studying the Einstein constraint equations on manifolds with asymptotically cylindrical ends.
A waveguide coincides with a three-dimensional domain G having finitely many cylindrical outlets to infinity; the boundary of G is smooth. In G, we consider the stationary Maxwell system with real spectral parameter k and identity matrices of dielectric and magnetic permittivity. The boundary of G is supposed to be perfectly conductive. In the presence of charges and currents we investigate the solvability of the corresponding boundary value problem supplemented with "intrinsic" radiation conditions at infinity. For all k in the continuous spectrum of the problem (including the thresholds and …
We show that for an immersed two-sided minimal surface in $R^3$, there is a lower bound on the index depending on the genus and number of ends. Using this, we show the nonexistence of an embedded minimal surface in $R^3$ of index $2$, as conjectured by Choe. Moreover, we show that the index of a immersed two-sided minimal surface with embedded ends is bounded from above and below by a linear function of the total curvature of the surface.
In 3-dimensional Euclidean space, Scherk second surfaces are singly periodic embedded minimal surfaces with four planar ends. In this paper, we obtain a natural generalization of these minimal surfaces in any higher dimensional Euclidean space ${\R}^{n+1}$, for $n \geq 3$. More precisely, we show that there exist $(n-1)$-periodic embedded minimal hypersurfaces with four hyperplanar ends. The moduli space of these hypersurfaces forms a 1-dimensional fibration over the moduli space of flat tori in ${\R}^{n-1}$. A partial description of the boundary of this moduli space is also given.
We characterize the groupoids for which an operator is Fredholm if, and only if, its principal symbol and all its boundary restrictions are invertible. A groupoid with this property is called {\em Fredholm}. Using results on the Effros-Hahn conjecture, we show that an almost amenable, Hausdorff, second countable groupoid is Fredholm. Many groupoids, and hence many pseudodifferential operators appearing in practice, fit into this framework. In particular, one can use these results to characterize the Fredholm operators on manifolds with cylindrical and poly-cylindrical ends, on manifolds that a…
We consider minimal surfaces $M$ which are complete, embedded and have finite total curvature in $\R^3$, and bounded, entire solutions with finite Morse index of the Allen-Cahn equation $Δu + f(u) = 0 \hbox{in} \R^3 $. Here $f=-W'$ with $W$ bistable and balanced, for instance $W(u) =\frac 14 (1-u^2)^2$. We assume that $M$ has $m\ge 2$ ends, and additionally that $M$ is non-degenerate, in the sense that its bounded Jacobi fields are all originated from rigid motions (this is known for instance for a Catenoid and for the Costa-Hoffman-Meeks surface of any genus). We prove that for any small $α>0…
We prove a compactness theorem for holomorphic curves in 4-dimensional symplectizations that have embedded projections to the underlying 3-manifold. It strengthens the cylindrical case of the SFT compactness theorem by using intersection theory to show that degenerations of such sequences never give rise to multiple covers or nodes, so transversality is easily achieved. This has application to the theory of stable finite energy foliations, and also suggests a new approach to defining SFT-type invariants for contact 3-manifolds, or more generally, 3-manifolds with stable Hamiltonian structures.
