In 3-dimensional Euclidean space, Scherk second surfaces are singly periodic embedded minimal surfaces with four planar ends. In this paper, we obtain a natural generalization of these minimal surfaces in any higher dimensional Euclidean space ${\R}^{n+1}$, for $n \geq 3$. More precisely, we show that there exist $(n-1)$-periodic embedded minimal hypersurfaces with four hyperplanar ends. The moduli space of these hypersurfaces forms a 1-dimensional fibration over the moduli space of flat tori in ${\R}^{n-1}$. A partial description of the boundary of this moduli space is also given.
Higher dimensional generalizations of Schwarz's $P$-surface, Schwarz's $D$-surface and Scherk's second surface are constructed as complete embedded periodic minimal hy- persurfaces in $\mathbb R^n$.
Equations are derived for the shape of a hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^N$ for which a rigid motion yields a minimal surface in $\mathbb{R}^{N+1}$. Some elementary, but unconventional, aspects of the classical case $N=2$ (solved by H.F. Scherk in 1835) are discussed in some detail.
We construct Weierstrass data for higher genus embedded doubly periodic minimal surfaces and present numerical evidence that the associated period problem can be solved. In the orthogonal ends case, there previously was only one known surface for each genus. We illustrate multiple new examples for each genus g>2. In the parallel ends case, the known examples limit as a foliation of parallel planes with nodes. We construct a new example for each genus g>2 that limit as g-1 singly periodic Scherk surfaces glued between two doubly periodic Scherk surfaces and also as a singly periodic surface wit…
We extend Osserman's lemma on the generalized Gauss map of two-dimensional minimal graphs of higher codimension, construct a Jenkins-Serrin type special Lagrangian Scherk graph explicitly, and generalize Calabi's correspondence between minimal graphs and maximal graphs.
We exhibit the first set of examples of non-bumpy metrics on the $(n+1)$-sphere ($2\leq n\leq 6$) in which the varifold associated with the two-parameter min-max construction must be a multiplicity-two minimal $n$-sphere. This is proved by a new area-and-separation estimate for certain minimal hypersurfaces with Morse index two inspired by an early work of Colding-Minicozzi. We also construct non-bumpy projective spaces in which the first min-max hypersurfaces are one-sided, and non-bumpy balls in which the free boundary min-max hypersurfaces are improper.
Given an initial $C^1$ hypersurface and a time-dependent vector field in a Sobolev space, we prove a time-global existence of a family of hypersurfaces which start from the given hypersurface and which move by the velocity equal to the mean curvature plus the given vector field. We show that the hypersurfaces are $C^1$ for a short time and, even after some singularities occur, almost everywhere $C^1$ away from higher multiplicity region.
We prove a compactness result for minimal hypersurfaces with bounded index and volume, which can be thought of as an extension of the compactness theorem of Choi-Schoen (Invent. Math. 1985) to higher dimensions.
We propose a notion of stability for capillary hypersurfaces with constant higher order mean curvature and we generalize some results of the classical stability theory for CMC capillary hypersurfaces.
We obtain sharp estimates involving the mean curvatures of higher order of a complete bounded hypersurface immersed in a complete Riemannian manifold. Similar results are also given for complete spacelike hypersurfaces in Lorentzian ambient spaces.
We prove that on a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $3$ or higher, with positive Ricci curvature, the Allen--Cahn min-max scheme (implemented by the first author and N. Wickramasekera in 2020), with prescribing function taken to be a non-zero constant $λ$, produces an embedded hypersurface of constant mean curvature $λ$ ($λ$-CMC). More precisely, we prove that the interface arising from said min-max contains no even-multiplicity minimal hypersurface and no quasi-embedded points (both of these occurrences are in principle possible in the conclusions of the aforementioned work by the fir…
We consider the gradient flow of hypersurfaces immersed in the Euclidean space associated to geometric energy functionals. We show that for particular functionals depending by higher covariant derivatives of the curvature, singularities in finite time cannot occur during the evolution. Such geometric functionals are related to similar ones proposed by Ennio De Giorgi, who conjectured for them an analogous regularity result.
The classical Cohn-Vossen theorem states that two isometric compact convex surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ are congruent. In this short note, we generalize the classical Cohn-Vossen Theorem to higher dimensional surfaces in space form $N^{n+1}(K)$ for $n\ge 2$.
The main results of the paper are Proposition 3 and 4 which provide an effective way to construct minimal hypersurfaces in a Euclidean space. We demonstrate our technique by several new examples. This note is English translation of an earlier draft version written (in Russian) in September 1999. The final version of the paper will be published somewhere else.
In this paper we characterize compact and complete hypersurfaces with some constant higher order mean curvature into warped product spaces. Our approach is based on the use of a new trace operator version of the Omori-Yau maximum principle which seems to be interesting in its own.
In this paper we analyze the problem of uniqueness for spacelike hypersurfaces with constant higher order mean curvature in generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes. We consider first the case of compact spacelike hypersurfaces, completing some previous results given in [2]. We next extend these results to the complete noncompact case. In that case, our approach is based on the use of a generalized version of the Omori-Yau maximum principle for trace type differential operators, recently given in [3].
Sbrana and Cartan gave local classifications for the set of Euclidean hypersurfaces $M^n\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ which admit another genuine isometric immersions in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ for $n\geq 3$. The main goal of this paper is to extend their classification to higher codimensions. Our main result is a complete description of the moduli space of genuine deformations of generic hypersurfaces of rank $(p+1)$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n+p}$ for $p\leq n-2$. As a consequence, we obtain an analogous classification to the ones given by Sbrana and Cartan providing all local isometric immersions in $\mathbb…
It is still an open question whether a compact embedded hypersurface in the Euclidean space R^{n+1} with constant mean curvature and spherical boundary is necessarily a hyperplanar ball or a spherical cap, even in the simplest case of surfaces in R^3. In a recent paper the first and third authors have shown that this is true for the case of hypersurfaces in R^{n+1} with constant scalar curvature, and more generally, hypersurfaces with constant higher order r-mean curvature, when r>1. In this paper we deal with some aspects of the classical problem above, by considering it in a more general con…
Given a positive function $F$ on $S^n$ which satisfies a convexity condition, for $1\leq r\leq n$, we define the $r$-th anisotropic mean curvature function $H^F_r$ for hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ which is a generalization of the usual $r$-th mean curvature function. We prove that a compact embedded hypersurface without boundary in $\R^{n+1}$ with $H^F_r={constant}$ is the Wulff shape, up to translations and homotheties. In case $r=1$, our result is the anisotropic version of Alexandrov Theorem, which gives an affirmative answer to an open problem of F. Morgan.
In this paper, we show that a closed manifold $M^{n+1} (n \geq 7)$ endowed with a $C^\infty$-generic (Baire sense) metric contains infinitely many singular minimal hypersurfaces with optimal regularity. Moreover, for $2 \leq n \leq 6$, our argument also implies the denseness of the minimal hypersurfaces realizing min-max widths for generic metrics. This partially supports equidistribution of the minimal hypersurfaces realizing min-max widths conjectured by F.C. Marques, A. Neves and A. Song.
Given a positive function $F$ on $\mathbb S^n$ which satisfies a convexity condition, for $1\leq r\leq n$, we define for hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ the $r$-th anisotropic mean curvature function $H_{r; F}$, a generalization of the usual $r$-th mean curvature function. We call a hypersurface is anisotropic minimal if $H_F=H_{1; F}=0$, and anisotropic $r$-minimal if $H_{r+1; F}=0$. Let $W$ be the set of points which are omitted by the hyperplanes tangent to $M$. We will prove that if an oriented hypersurface $M$ is anisotropic minimal, and the set $W$ is open and non-empty, then $x(M)$ …
We prove the existence of a one parameter family of minimal embedded hypersurfaces in $R^{n+1}$, for $n \geq 3$, which generalize the well known 2 dimensional "Riemann minimal surfaces". The hypersurfaces we obtain are complete, embedded, simply periodic hypersurfaces which have infinitely many parallel hyperplanar ends. By opposition with the 2-dimensional case, they are not foliated by spheres.
We consider hypersurfaces of products $M\times\mathbb R$ with constant $r$-th mean curvature $H_r\ge 0$ (to be called $H_r$-hypersurfaces), where $M$ is an arbitrary Riemannian $n$-manifold. We develop a general method for constructing them, and employ it to produce many examples for a variety of manifolds $M,$ including all simply connected space forms and the hyperbolic spaces $\mathbb{H}_{\mathbb F}^m$ (rank $1$ symmetric spaces of noncompact type). We construct and classify complete rotational $H_r(\ge 0)$-hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{H}_{\mathbb F}^m\times\mathbb R$ and in $\mathbb S^n\times…
In this paper we study the problem of uniqueness for spacelike hypersurfaces with constant higher order mean curvature in generalized Robertson-Walker (GRW) spacetimes. In particular, we consider the following question: Under what conditions must a compact spacelike hypersurface with constant higher order mean curvature in a spatially closed GRW spacetime be a spacelike slice? We prove that this happens, esentially, under the so called convergence condition. Our approach is based on the use of the Newton transformations (and their associated differential operators) and the Minkowski formulae f…
Motivated by the theory of isoparametric hypersurfaces, we study submanifolds whose tubular hypersurfaces have some constant "higher order mean curvatures". Here a $k$-th order mean curvature $Q_k$ ($k\geq1$) of a hypersurface $M^n$ is defined as the $k$-th power sum of the principal curvatures, or equivalently, of the shape operator. Many necessary restrictions involving principal curvatures, higher order mean curvatures and Jacobi operators on such submanifolds are obtained, which, among other things, generalize some classical results in the theory of isoparametric hypersurfaces given by E. …
In this article we provide a general construction when $n\ge3$ for immersed in Euclidean $(n+1)$-space, complete, smooth, constant mean curvature hypersurfaces of finite topological type (in short CMC $n$-hypersurfaces). More precisely our construction converts certain graphs in Euclidean $(n+1)$-space to CMC $n$-hypersurfaces with asymptotically Delaunay ends in two steps: First appropriate small perturbations of the given graph have their vertices replaced by round spherical regions and their edges and rays by Delaunay pieces so that a family of initial smooth hypersurfaces is constructed. O…
We find complete hypersurfaces of constant curvature in hyperbolic space with a prescribed asymptotic boundary at infinity for a general class of (elliptic) curvature functions which includes the higher order mean curvatures and their curvature quotients.
The invariant theory for conformal hypersurfaces is studied by treating these as the conformal infinity of a conformally compact manifold: For a given conformal hypersurface embedding, a distinguished ambient metric is found (within its conformal class) by solving a singular version of the Yamabe problem. Using existence results for asymptotic solutions to this problem, we develop the details of how to proliferate conformal hypersurface invariants. In addition we show how to compute the the solution's asymptotics. We also develop a calculus of conformal hypersurface invariant differential oper…
We show that closed starshaped hypersurfaces of space forms with almost constant mean curvature or almost constant higher order mean curvature are closed to geodesic spheres.
In this paper, we consider the high order geometric flows of a submanifolds $M$ in a complete Riemannian manifold $N$ with $\dim(N)=\dim(M)+1=n+1$, which were introduced by Mantegazza in the case the ambient space is an Euclidean space, and extend some results due to Mantegazza to the present situation under some assumptions on $N$. Precisely, we show that if $m\in\mathbb{N}$ is strictly larger than the integer part of $n/2$ and $φ(t)$ is a immersion for all $t\in[0,T)$ and if $\mathfrak{F}_m(φ_0)$ is bounded by a constant which relies on the injectivity radius $\bar{R}>0$ and sectional curvat…
In this paper we study $4$-dimensional affine hypersurfaces with a Lorentzian second fundamental form additionally equipped with an almost symplectic structure $ω$. We prove that the rank of the shape operator is at most one if $R^k\cdot ω=0$ or $\nabla^kω=0$ for some positive integer $k$. This result is the final step in a classification of Lorentzian affine hypersurfaces with higher order parallel almost symplectic forms.
This paper concerns some stability properties of higher dimensional catenoids in $\rr^{n+1}$ with $n\ge 3$. We prove that higher dimensional catenoids have index one. We use $δ$-stablity for minimal hypersurfaces and show that the catenoid is $\frac 2n$-stable and a complete $\frac 2n$-stable minimal hypersurface is a catenoid or a hyperplane provided the second fundamental form satisfies some decay conditions.
In this paper we obtain a sharp height estimate concerning compact hypersurfaces immersed into warped product spaces with some constant higher order mean curvature, and whose boundary is contained into a slice. We apply these results to draw topological conclusions at the end of the paper.
In this paper, we extend the notion of affine translation surfaces introduced by Liu and Yu (Proc. Japan Acad. Ser. A Math. Sci. 89, 111--113, 2013) in a Euclidean space R^{3} to higher dimensional ambient spaces. We provide that an affine translation hypersurface of constant Gauss-Kronocker curvature K_{0} in R^{n+1} is a cylinder, i.e. K_{0}=0. As further applications we describe such hypersurfaces in the isotropic spaces satisfying certain conditions on the isotropic curvatures and the Laplacian.
In this paper, we prove new pinching theorems for the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian on compact hypersurfaces of the Euclidean space. These pinching results are associated with the upper bound for the first eigenvalue in terms of higher order mean curvatures. We show that under a suitable pinching condition, the hypersurface is diffeomorpic and almost isometric to a standard sphere. Moreover, as a corollary, we show that a hypersurface of the Euclidean space which is almost Einstein is diffeomorpic and almost isometric to a standard sphere.
We give a new proof of the generalized Minkowski identities relating the higher degree mean curvatures of orientable closed hypersurfaces immersed in a given constant sectional curvature manifold. Our methods rely on a fundamental differential system of Riemannian geometry introduced by the author. We develop the notion of position vector field, which lies at the core of the Minkowski identities.
In this paper we give an upper bound of the first eigenvalue of the Laplace operator on a complete stable minimal hypersurface $M$ in the hyperbolic space which has finite $L^2$-norm of the second fundamental form on $M$. We provide some sufficient conditions for minimal hypersurface of the hyperbolic space to be stable. We also describe stability of catenoids and helicoids in the hyperbolic space. In particular, it is shown that there exists a family of stable higher-dimensional catenoids in the hyperbolic space.
The paper investigates higher dimensional analogues of Burago's inequality bounding the area of a closed surface by its total curvature. We obtain sufficient conditions for hypersurfaces in 4-space that involve the Ricci curvature. We get semi-local variants of the inequality holding in any dimension that involve domains with non-vanishing Gauss-Kronecker curvature. The paper also contains inequalities of isoperimetric type involving the total curvature, as well as a "reverse" isoperimetric inequality for spaces with constant curvature.
A classical result by Marston Morse asserts that on some ellipsoids of ${\mathbb R}^3$ there exists exactly 3 closed and simple geodesics. The goal of this presentation is to prove that this rigidity result does not extend to higher dimensions and, more precisely, on any smooth closed riemannian manifod of arbitrary dimension between 3 and 7 there exists infinitely many closed embedded minimal surfaces. We are going to present the origins of this theorem as well as it's proof given recently by Antoine Song.
