One proves that each almost local-global semihereditary ring has the stacked basis property and is almost Bezout. If M is a finitely presented module, its torsion part tM is a direct sum of cyclic modules where the family of annhilators is an ascending chain of invertible ideals. These ideals are invariants of M. Moreover, M/tM is a direct sum of 2-generated ideals whose product is an invariant of M. The idempotents and the positive integers defined by the rank of M/tM are invariants of M too.
The existence of a well-behaved dimension of a finite von Neumann algebra (see [19]) has lead to the study of such a dimension of finite Baer *-rings (see [26]) that satisfy certain *-ring axioms (used in [9]). This dimension is closely related to the equivalence relation $\sim^{*}$ on projections defined by $p\sim^{*} q$ iff $p=xx^*$ and $q=x^*x$ for some $x.$ However, the equivalence $\sim^{a}$ on projections (or, in general, idempotents) defined by $p\sim^{a} q$ iff $p=xy$ and $q=yx$ for some $x$ and $y,$ can also be relevant. There were attempts to unify the two approaches (see [10]). In t…
In this paper, we introduce and study the concept of CS-Rickart modules, that is a module analogue of the concept of ACS rings. A ring $R$ is called a right weakly semihereditary ring if every its finitly generated right ideal is of the form $P\oplus S,$ where $P_R$ is a projective module and $S_R$ is a singular module. We describe the ring $R$ over which $\mathrm{Mat}_n (R)$ is a right ACS ring for any $n \in \mathbb {N}$. We show that every finitely generated projective right $R$-module will to be a CS-Rickart module, is precisely when $R$ is a right weakly semihereditary ring. Also, we prov…
This article deals mostly with the following question: when is the classical ring of quotients of a commutative ring a ring of stable range 1? We introduce the concepts of a ring of (von Neumann) regular range 1, a ring of semihereditary range 1, a ring of regular range 1, a semihereditary local ring, a regular local ring. We find relationships between the introduced classes of rings and known ones, in particular, it is established that a commutative indecomposable almost clean ring is a regular local ring. A commutative any ring of idempotent regular range 1 is an almost clean ring. It is sho…
Let $F$ be a field, let $V$ be a valuation ring of $F$ of arbitrary Krull dimension (rank), let $K$ be a finite Galois extension of $F$ with group $G$, and let $S$ be the integral closure of $V$ in $K$. Let $f:G\times G\mapsto K\setminus \{0\}$ be a normalized two-cocycle such that $f(G\times G)\subseteq S\setminus \{0\}$, but we do not require that $f$ should take values in the group of multiplicative units of $S$. One can construct a crossed-product $V$-order $A_f=\sum_{σ\in G}Sx_σ$ with multiplication given by $x_σsx_τ=σ(s)f(σ,τ)x_{στ}$ for $s\in S$, $σ,τ\in G$. We characterize semiheredita…
Let $R$ be a valuation ring and let $Q$ be its total quotient ring. It is proved that any singly projective (respectively flat) module is finitely projective if and only if $Q$ is maximal (respectively artinian). It is shown that each singly projective module is a content module if and only if any non-unit of $R$ is a zero-divisor and that each singly projective module is locally projective if and only if $R$ is self injective. Moreover, $R$ is maximal if and only if each singly projective module is separable, if and only if any flat content module is locally projective. Necessary and sufficie…
In this paper we compute the set of point modules of finitely semi-graded rings. In particular, from the parametrization of the point modules for the quantum affine n-space, the set of point modules for some important examples of non $\mathbb{N}$-graded quantum algebras is computed.
We prove that every non-finitely generated projective module over the integral group ring of a polycyclic-by-finite group G is free if and only if G is polycyclic.
We study a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structure on the Hochschild cohomology of the group ring of finitely generated abelian groups. The Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structure for finite abelian groups comes from the fact that the group ring of finite groups is a symmetric algebra, and the Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structure for free abelian groups of finite rank comes from the fact that its group ring is a Calabi-Yau algebra.
We describe all possible universal localisations of a hereditary ring in terms of suitable full subcategories of the category of finitely presented modules. For these universal localisations we then identify the category of finitely presented bound modules over the universal localisation as being equivalent to a certain full subcategory of the category of finitely presented bound modules over the original ring. We also describe the abelian monoid of finitely generated projective modules over the universal localisation.
A ring is clean (almost clean) if each of its elements is the sum of a unit (regular element) and an idempotent. A module is clean (almost clean) if its endomorphism ring is clean (almost clean). We show that every quasi-continuous and nonsingular module is almost clean and that every right CS and right nonsingular ring is almost clean. As a corollary, all right strongly semihereditary rings, including finite $AW^*$-algebras and noetherian Leavitt path algebras in particular, are almost clean. We say that a ring $R$ is special clean (special almost clean) if each element $a$ can be decomposed …
It is proved that localizations of injective $R$-modules of finite Goldie dimension are injective if $R$ is an arithmetical ring satisfying the following condition: for every maximal ideal $P$, $R_P$ is either coherent or not semicoherent. If, in addition, each finitely generated $R$-module has finite Goldie dimension, then localizations of finitely injective $R$-modules are finitely injective too. Moreover, if $R$ is a Prüfer domain of finite character, localizations of injective $R$-modules are injective.
We prove that a variety of algebras whose finitely generated members are free must be definitionally equivalent to the variety of sets, the variety of pointed sets, a variety of vector spaces over a division ring, or a variety of affine vector spaces over a division ring.
A new class of rings, {\em the class of weakly left localizable rings}, is introduced. A ring $R$ is called {\em weakly left localizable} if each non-nilpotent element of $R$ is invertible in some left localization $S^{-1}R$ of the ring $R$. Explicit criteria are given for a ring to be a weakly left localizable ring provided the ring has only finitely many maximal left denominator sets (eg, this is the case if a ring has a left Artinian left quotient ring). It is proved that a ring with finitely many maximal left denominator sets that satisfies some natural conditions is a weakly left localiza…

We introduce the notion of a severe right Ore set in the main as a tool to study universal localisations of rings but also to provide a short proof of P. M. Cohn's classification of homomorphisms from a ring to a division ring. We prove that the category of finitely presented modules over a universal localisation is equivalent to a localisation at a severe right Ore set of the category of finitely presented modules over the original ring. This allows us to describe the structure of finitely presented modules over the universal localisation as modules over the original ring.
We consider the following question: When are rings of differential operators coherent? If $A$ is a finitely generated smooth domain over a field $k$ of characteristic $0$, then the ring $D$ of differential operators on $A$ is a Noetherian ring and a finitely generated $k$-algebra. However, when $k$ has characteristic $p > 0$ or when $A$ is singular, this is no longer true. In fact, Bernstein, Gelfand and Gelfand showed that for the cubic cone $A = k[x,y,z]/(x^3 + y^3 + z^3)$, the ring $D$ is neither Noetherian nor finitely generated if $k$ has characteristic $0$, and the same is true for the p…
In this paper we establish a very close link (in terms of von Neumann's coordinatization) between regular modules introduced by Zelmanowitz, on one hand, and von Neumann regular rings, on the other hand: we prove that the lattice $\mathcal{L}^{fg}(M)$ of all finitely generated submodules of a finitely generated regular module $M$, over an arbitrary ring, can be coordinatized as the lattice of all principal right ideals of some von Neumann regular ring $S$.
In this paper we provide a complete algebraic characterization of elementary equivalence of rings with a finitely generated additive group in the language of pure rings. The rings considered are arbitrary otherwise.
We begin by investigating the class of commutative unital rings in which no two distinct elements divide the same elements. We prove that this class forms a finitely axiomatizable, relatively ideal distributive quasivariety, and it equals the quasivariety generated by the class of integral domains with trivial unit group. We end the paper by proving a representation theorem that provides more evidence to the conjecture that Bézout monoids describe exactly the monoids of finitely generated ideals of commutative unital rings with distributive ideal lattice.
Let $K$ be a commutative Noetherian ring with identity, let $A$ be a $K$-algebra, and let $B$ be a subalgebra of $A$ such that $A/B$ is finitely generated as a $K$-module. The main result of the paper is that $A$ is finitely presented (resp. finitely generated) if and only if $B$ is finitely presented (resp. finitely generated). As corollaries we obtain: a subring of finite index in a finitely presented ring is finitely presented; a subalgebra of finite co-dimension in a finitely presented algebra over a field is finitely presented (already shown by Voden in 2009). We also discuss the role of …
Let R be a commutative ring. If P is a maximal ideal of R whose a power is finitely generated then we prove that P is finitely generated if R is either locally coherent or arithmetical or a polynomial ring over a ring of global dimension $\le$ 2. And if P is a prime ideal of R whose a power is finitely generated then we show that P is finitely generated if R is either a reduced coherent ring or a polynomial ring over a reduced arithmetical ring. These results extend a theorem of Roitman, published in 2001, on prime ideals of coherent integral domains.
We survey noetherian rings $A$ over which the injective hull of every simple module is locally artinian. Then we give a general construction for algebras $A$ that do not have this property. In characteristic 0, we also complete the classification of down-up algebras with this property.
We develop a technique to construct finitely injective modules which are non trivial, in the sense that they are not direct sums of injective modules. As a consequence, we prove that a ring $R$ is left noetherian if and only if each finitely injective left $R$-module is trivial, thus answering an open question posed by Salce.
This paper studies the multiplicative ideal structure of commutative rings in which every finitely generated ideal is quasi-projective. Section 2 provides some preliminaries on quasi-projective modules over commutative rings. Section 3 investigates the correlation with well-known Prufer conditions; namely, we prove that this class of rings stands strictly between the two classes of arithmetical rings and Gaussian rings. Thereby, we generalize Osofsky's theorem on the weak global dimension of arithmetical rings and partially resolve Bazzoni-Glaz's related conjecture on Gaussian rings. We also e…
It is shown that a ring is left semihereditary if and only each homomorphic image of its injective hull as left module is FP-injective. It is also proven that a commutative ring R is reduced and arithmetical if and only if E/U if FP-injective for any FP-injective R-module E and for any submodule U of finite Goldie dimension. A characterization of commutative rings for which each module of finite Goldie dimension is of injective dimension at most one is given. Let R be a chain ring and Z its subset of zerodivisors. It is proven that E/U is FP-injective for each FP-injective R-module E and each …
A monoid $S$ is right coherent if every finitely generated subact of every finitely presented right $S$-act is finitely presented. The corresponding notion for a ring $R$ states that every finitely generated submodule of every finitely presented right $R$-module is finitely presented. For monoids (and rings) right coherency is a finitary property which determines the existence of a model companion of the class of right $S$-acts (right $R$-modules) and hence that the class of existentially closed right $S$-acts (right $R$-modules) is axiomatisable. Choo, Lam and Luft have shown that free rings …
We introduce a generalisation of Condition (K) to finitely separated graphs and show that it is equivalent to essential freeness of the associated partial action as well as the exchange property of any of the associated tame algebras. As a consequence, we can show that any tame separated graph algebra with the exchange property is separative.
In this paper we study (non-commutative) rings $R$ over which every finitely generated left module is a direct sum of cyclic modules (called left FGC-rings). The commutative case was a well-known problem studied and solved in 1970s by various authors. It is shown that a Noetherian local left FGC-ring is either an Artinian principal left ideal ring, or an Artinian principal right ideal ring, or a prime ring over which every two-sided ideal is principal as a left and a right ideal. In particular, it is shown that a Noetherian local duo-ring $R$ is a left FGC-ring if and only if $R$ is a right FG…
A new class of rings, the class of left localizable rings, is introduced. A ring $R$ is left localizable if each nonzero element of $R$ is invertible in some left localization $S^{-1}R$ of the ring $R$. Explicit criteria are given for a ring to be a left localizable ring provided the ring has only finitely many maximal left denominator sets (eg, this is the case if a ring has a left Artinian left quotient ring). It is proved that a ring with finitely many maximal left denominator sets is a left localizable ring iff its left quotient ring is a direct product of finitely many division rings. A c…
Let $R$ be a left and right Noetherian ring. We introduce the notion of the torsionfree dimension of finitely generated $R$-modules. For any $n\geq 0$, we prove that $R$ is a Gorenstein ring with self-injective dimension at most $n$ if and only if every finitely generated left $R$-module and every finitely generated right $R$-module have torsionfree dimension at most $n$, if and only if every finitely generated left (or right) $R$-module has Gorenstein dimension at most $n$. For any $n \geq 1$, we study the properties of the finitely generated $R$-modules $M$ with $\Ext_R^i(M, R)=0$ for any $1…
An associative ring $R$ with identity is left pseudo-morphic if for every $a$$\in$$R$, there exists $b$$\in$$R$ such that $Ra=l_R(b)$. If, in addition, $l_R(a)=Rb$, then $R$ is called left morphic. $R$ is morphic if it is both left and right morphic. We characterize left pseudo-morphic rings; identify the cases a (left) pseudo morphic ring is (left) quasi-morphic, morphic, Quasi-Frobenius, von Neumann regular, etc.; correct two results in a book and a paper; and completely determine when the trivial extension of a commutative domain is morphic which positively answered a question in a paper.
Let R be a unital commutative ring and let $M$ be an $R$-module that is generated by $k$ elements but not less. Let $E_n(R)$ be the subgroup of $GL_n(R)$ generated by the elementary matrices. In this paper we study the action of $E_n(R)$ by matrix multiplication on the set $Um_n(M)$ of unimodular rows of $M$ of length $n \ge k$. Assuming $R$ is moreover Noetherian and quasi-Euclidean, e.g., $R$ is a direct sum of finitely many Euclidean rings, we show that this action is transitive if $n > k$. We also prove that $Um_k(M) /E_k(R)$ is equipotent with the unit group of $R/(a_1)$ where $(a_1)$ is …
In this paper we study initial topological properties of the (non-)finitely-generated locus of Frobenius Algebra coming from Stanley-Reisner rings defined through face ideals. More specifically, we will give a partial answer to a conjecture made by M. Katzman about the openness of the finitely generated locus of such Frobenius algebras. This conjecture can be formulated in a precise manner: Let us define \begin{equation*} U=\{P\in \text{Spec}(R)~:~\mathcal{F}(E_{R_{p}})~\text{is a finitely generated}~R_{p}\text{-algebra}\} \end{equation*} where $\mathcal{F}$ denotes the Frobenius functor and $…
In 1960 Fuchs posed the problem of characterizing the groups which are the groups of units of commutative rings. In the following years, some partial answers have been given to this question in particular cases. In this paper we address Fuchs' question for {\it finitely generated abelian} groups and we consider the problem of characterizing those groups which arise in some fixed classes of rings $\mathcal C$, namely the integral domains, the torsion free rings and the reduced rings. To determine the realizable groups we have to establish what finite abelian groups $T$ (up to isomorphism) occur…
Let R be a commutative ring. A not necessarily commutative R-algebra A is called futile if it has only finitely many R-subalgebras. In this article we relate the notion of futility to familiar properties of rings and modules. We do this by first reducing to the case where A is commutative. Then we refine the description of commutative futile algebras from Dobbs, Picavet and Picavet-L'hermite.

A definition of quasi-flat left module is proposed and it is shown that any left module which is either quasi-projective or flat is quasi-flat. A characterization of local commutative rings for which each ideal is quasi-flat (resp. quasi-projective) is given. It is also proven that each commutative ring R whose finitely generated ideals are quasi-flat is of $λ$-dimension $\le$ 3, and this dimension $\le$ 2 if R is local. This extends a former result about the class of arithmetical rings. Moreover, if R has a unique minimal prime ideal then its finitely generated ideals are quasi-projective if …
Recentely, Anderson and Dumitrescu's $S$-finiteness has attracted the interest of several authors. In this paper, we introduce the notions of $S$-finitely presented modules and then of $S$-coherent rings which are $S$-versions of finitely presented modules and coherent rings, respectively. Among other results, we give an $S$-version of the classical Chase's characterization of coherent rings. We end the paper with a brief discussion on other $S$-versions of finitely presented modules and coherent rings. We prove that these last $S$-versions can be characterized in terms of localization.
Let R be a quotient ring of a commutative coherent regular ring by a finitely generated ideal. Hovey gave a bijection between the set of coherent subcategories of the category of finitely presented R-modules and the set of thick subcategories of the derived category of perfect R-complexes. Using this isomorphism, he proved that every coherent subcategory of finitely presented R-modules is a Serre subcategory. In this paper, it is proved that this holds whenever R is a commutative noetherian ring. This paper also yields a module version of the bijection between the set of localizing subcategori…
We consider a class of self-injective special biserial algebras $Λ_N$ over a field $K$ and show that the Hochschild cohomology ring of $Λ_N$ is a finitely generated $K$-algebra. Moreover the Hochschild cohomology ring of $Λ_N$ modulo nilpotence is a finitely generated commutative $K$-algebra of Krull dimension two. As a consequence the conjecture of Snashall-Solberg \cite{SS}, concerning the Hochschild cohomology ring modulo nilpotence, holds for this class of algebras.
An $R$-module $M$ is called virtually uniserial if for every finitely generated submodule $0 \neq K \subseteq M$, $K/$Rad$(K)$ is virtually simple. In this paper, we generalize virtually uniserial modules by dropping the virtually simple condition and replacing it by the cyclic uniform condition. An $R$-module $M$ is called cyclic-uniform uniserial if $K/$Rad$(K)$ is cyclic and uniform, for every finitely generated submodule $0 \neq K \subseteq M$. Also, $M$ is said to be cyclic-uniform serial if it is a direct sum of cyclic-uniform uniserial modules. Several properties of cyclic-uniform (uni)…
Let $R$ be a strong $n$-coherent ring such that each finitely $n$-presented $R$-module has finite projective dimension. We consider $\mathcal{FP}_{n}(R)$ the full subcategory of $R$-Mod of finitely $n$-presented modules. We prove that $\mathcal{FP}_{n}(R)$ is an exact category, $K_{i}(R) = K_{i}(\mathcal{FP}_{n}(R))$ for every $i\geq 0$ and obtain an expression of $\operatorname{Nil}_{i}(R)$.
We study conditions under which subdirect products of various types of algebraic structures are finitely generated or finitely presented. In the case of two factors, we prove general results for arbitrary congruence permutable varieties, which generalise previously known results for groups, and which apply to modules, rings, $K$-algebras and loops. For instance, if $C$ is a fiber product of $A$ and $B$ over a common quotient $D$, and if $A$, $B$ and $D$ are finitely presented, then $C$ is finitely generated. For subdirect products of more than two factors we establish a general connection with…
Let $R$ be a commutative ring and ${\Bbb{A}}(R)$ be the set of ideals with non-zero annihilators. The annihilating-ideal graph of $R$ is defined as the graph ${\Bbb{AG}}(R)$ with the vertex set ${\Bbb{A}}(R)^*={\Bbb{A}}\setminus\{(0)\}$ and two distinct vertices $I$ and $J$ are adjacent if and only if $IJ=(0)$. We investigate commutative rings $R$ whose annihilating-ideal graphs have positive genus $γ(\Bbb{AG}(R))$. It is shown that if $R$ is an Artinian ring such that $γ(\Bbb{AG}(R))<\infty$, then $R$ has finitely many ideals or $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ is a Gorenstein ring with maximal ideal $\mat…
Let R be a strongly Z-graded ring with degree-0 subring S, and let C be a chain complex of modules over the subring P of elements of non-negative degree. We show that there are non-commutative localisations of P which detect whether the complex C is S-finitely dominated or S-contractible, respectively, and that these localisations are universal among P-rings making S-finitely dominated and S-contractible complexes contractible. This generalises known results for polynomial rings to a much wider class of rings. We show by example that in general C need not be P-homotopy finite even if C is S-fi…
