The Topological Tverberg Theorem claims that any continuous map of a (q-1)(d+1)-simplex to \R^d identifies points from q disjoint faces. (This has been proved for affine maps, for d=1, and if q is a prime power, but not yet in general.) The Topological Tverberg Theorem can be restricted to maps of the d-skeleton of the simplex. We further show that it is equivalent to a ``Winding Number Conjecture'' that concerns only maps of the (d-1)-skeleton of a (q-1)(d+1)-simplex to \R^d. ``Many Tverberg partitions'' arise if and only if there are ``many q-winding partitions.'' The d=2 case of the Winding Number Conjecture is a problem about drawings of the complete graphs K_{3q-2} in the plane. We investigate graphs that are minimal with respect to the winding number condition.
We introduce a new ``Winding Number Conjecture'' about maps from the $(d-1)$-skeleton of the $((d+1)(q-1))$-simplex into $\real^d$. This conjecture is equivalent to the Topological Tverberg Theorem. Furthermore, many statements about the Topological Tverberg Theorem transfer to the Winding Number Conjecture, for example all currently proven cases of the Topological Tverberg Theorem as well as Sierksma's conjecture about the number of Tverberg partitions. In the case $d=2$, the Winding Number Conjecture is a statement about complete graphs: It claims that in every image of $K_{3(q-1)+1}$ in the…
This survey presents an overview of the advances around Tverberg's theorem, focusing on the last two decades. We discuss the topological, linear-algebraic, and combinatorial aspects of Tverberg's theorem and its applications. The survey contains several open problems and conjectures.
In this paper we use the strength of the constraint method in combination with a generalized Borsuk-Ulam type theorem and a cohomological intersection lemma to show how one can obtain many new topological transversal theorems of Tverberg type. In particular, we derive a topological generalized transversal Van Kampen-Flores theorem and a topological transversal weak colored Tverberg theorem.
Using the authors' 2014 "constraints method," we give a short proof for a 2015 result of Dobbins on representations of a point in a polytope as the barycenter of points in a skeleton, and show that the "r-fold Whitney trick" of Mabillard and Wagner (2014/2015) implies that the Topological Tverberg Conjecture for r-fold intersections fails dramatically for all r that are not prime powers.
The "topological Tverberg conjecture" by Bárány, Shlosman and Szűcs (1981) states that any continuous map of a simplex of dimension $(r-1)(d+1)$ to $\mathbb{R}^d$ maps points from $r$ disjoint faces of the simplex to the same point in $\mathbb{R}^d$. This was established for affine maps by Tverberg (1966), for the case when $r$ is a prime by Bárány et al., and for prime power $r$ by Özaydin (1987). We combine the generalized van Kampen theorem announced by Mabillard and Wagner (2014) with the constraint method of Blagojević, Ziegler and the author (2014), and thus prove the existence of counte…
I describe the history of Topological Tverberg Theorem. I present some important constructions and discuss their properties. In particular, I describe in details the cell structure of the classifying space $K\left( S_{r},1\right),$ where $S_{r}$ is the permutation group. I also clarify some bibliographical issues.
In this paper we present a proof of the BMZ Reduction Lemma with a motivational perspective, and state this lemma for maps to manifolds using the classical definition of cohomological dimension. The lemma, proved and utilized in [4], gives a geometrical insight in the proof of the BMZ colored topological Tverberg theorem.
Bárány, Kalai, and Meshulam recently obtained a topological Tverberg-type theorem for matroids, which guarantees multiple coincidences for continuous maps from a matroid complex to d-dimensional Euclidean space, if the matroid has sufficiently many disjoint bases. They make a conjecture on the connectivity of k-fold deleted joins of a matroid with many disjoint bases, which would yield a much tighter result - but we provide a counterexample already for the case of k=2, where a tight Tverberg-type theorem would be a topological Radon theorem for matroids. Nevertheless, we prove the topological …
The topological Tverberg theorem claims that for any continuous map of the (q-1)(d+1)-simplex to R^d there are q disjoint faces such that their images have a non-empty intersection. This has been proved for affine maps, and if $q$ is a prime power, but not in general. We extend the topological Tverberg theorem in the following way: Pairs of vertices are forced to end up in different faces. This leads to the concept of constraint graphs. In Tverberg's theorem with constraints, we come up with a list of constraints graphs for the topological Tverberg theorem. The proof is based on connectivity r…
Bárány's "topological Tverberg conjecture" from 1976 states that any continuous map of an $N$-simplex $Δ_N$ to $\mathbb{R}^d$, for $N\ge(d+1)(r-1)$, maps points from $r$ disjoint faces in $Δ_N$ to the same point in $\mathbb{R}^d$. The proof of this result for the case when $r$ is a prime, as well as some colored version of the same result, using the results of Borsuk-Ulam and Dold on the non-existence of equivariant maps between spaces with a free group action, were main topics of Matoušek's 2003 book "Using the Borsuk-Ulam theorem." In this paper we show how advanced equivariant topology meth…
Using equivariant obstruction theory we construct equivariant maps from certain classifying spaces to representation spheres for cyclic groups, product of elementary Abelian groups and dihedral groups. Restricting them to finite skeleta constructs equivariant maps between spaces which are related to the topological Tverberg conjecture. This answers negatively a question of Özaydin posed in relation to weaker versions of the same conjecture. Further, it also has consequences for Borsuk-Ulam properties of representations of cyclic and dihedral groups.
Many of the strengthenings and extensions of the topological Tverberg theorem can be derived with surprising ease directly from the original theorem: For this we introduce a proof technique that combines a concept of "Tverberg unavoidable subcomplexes" with the observation that Tverberg points that equalize the distance from such a subcomplex can be obtained from maps to an extended target space. Thus we obtain simple proofs for many variants of the topological Tverberg theorem, such as the colored Tverberg theorem of Zivaljevic and Vrecica (1992). We also get a new strengthened version of the…
We prove a "Tverberg type" multiple intersection theorem. It strengthens the prime case of the original Tverberg theorem from 1966, as well as the topological Tverberg theorem of Barany et al. (1980), by adding color constraints. It also provides an improved bound for the (topological) colored Tverberg problem of Barany & Larman (1992) that is tight in the prime case and asymptotically optimal in the general case. The proof is based on relative equivariant obstruction theory.
The topological Tverberg theorem has been generalized in several directions by setting extra restrictions on the Tverberg partitions. Restricted Tverberg partitions, defined by the idea that certain points cannot be in the same part, are encoded with graphs. When two points are adjacent in the graph, they are not in the same part. If the restrictions are too harsh, then the topological Tverberg theorem fails. The colored Tverberg theorem corresponds to graphs constructed as disjoint unions of small complete graphs. Hell studied the case of paths and cycles. In graph theory these partitions are…

The type A colored Tverberg theorem of Blagojević, Matschke, and Ziegler provides optimal bounds for the colored Tverberg problem, under the condition that the number of intersecting rainbow simplices is a prime number. We extend this result to an optimal, type A colored Tverberg theorem for multisets of colored points, which is valid for each prime power $r=p^k$. One of the principal new ideas is to replace the ambient simplex $Δ^N$, used in the original Tverberg theorem, by an "abridged simplex" of smaller dimension, and to compensate for this reduction by allowing vertices to repeatedly app…
The topological Tverberg theorem states that for any prime power q and continuous map from a (d+1)(q-1)-simplex to R}^d, there are q disjoint faces F_i of the simplex whose images intersect. It is possible to put conditions on which pairs of vertices of the simplex that are allowed to be in the same face F_i. A graph with the same vertex set as the simplex, and with two vertices adjacent if they should not be in the same F_i, is called a Tverberg graph if the topological Tverberg theorem still work. These graphs have been studied by Hell, Schoneborn and Ziegler, and it is known that disjoint u…
The long-standing topological Tverberg conjecture claimed, for any continuous map from the boundary of an $N(q,d):=(q-1)(d+1)$-simplex to $d$-dimensional Euclidian space, the existence of $q$ pairwise disjoint subfaces whose images have non-empty $q$-fold intersection. The affine cases, true for all $q$, constitute Tverberg's famous 1966 generalization of the classical Radon's Theorem. Although established for all prime powers in 1987 by Özaydin, counterexamples to the conjecture, relying on 2014 work of Mabillard and Wagner, were first shown to exist for all non-prime-powers in 2015 by Frick.…
Kneser's 1955 conjecture -- proven by Lovász in 1978 -- asserts that in any partition of the $k$-subsets of $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$ into $n-2k-3$ parts, one part contains two disjoint sets. Schrijver showed that one can restrict to significantly fewer $k$-sets and still observe the same intersection pattern. Alon, Frankl, and Lovász proved a different generalization of Kneser's conjecture for $r$ pairwise disjoint sets. Dolnikov generalized Lovász' result to arbitrary set systems, while Kříž did the same for the $r$-fold extension of Kneser's conjecture. Here we prove a common generalization of a…
The topological Tverberg conjecture was considered a central unsolved problem of topological combinatorics. The conjecture asserts that for any integers $r,d>1$ and any continuous map $f:Δ\to\mathbb R^d$ of the $(d+1)(r-1)$-dimensional simplex there are pairwise disjoint faces $σ_1,\ldots,σ_r\subsetΔ$ such that $f(σ_1)\cap \ldots \cap f(σ_r)\ne\emptyset$. The conjecture was proved for a prime power $r$. Recently counterexamples for other $r$ were found. Analogously, the $r$-fold van Kampen-Flores conjecture holds for a prime power $r$ but does not hold for other $r$. The arguments form a beaut…
The topological Tverberg theorem states that any continuous map of a $(d+1)(r-1)$-simplex into the Euclidean $d$-space maps some points from $r$ pairwise disjoint faces of the simplex to the same point whenever $r$ is a prime power. We substantially generalize this theorem to continuous maps of certain CW complexes, including simplicial $((d+1)(r-1)-1)$-spheres, into the Euclidean $d$-space. We also discuss the atomicity of the Tverberg property.
The colored Tverberg theorem asserts that for every d and r there exists t=t(d,r) such that for every set C in R^d of cardinality (d+1)t, partitioned into t-point subsets C_1,C_2,...,C_{d+1} (which we think of as color classes; e.g., the points of C_1 are red, the points of C_2 blue, etc.), there exist r disjoint sets R_1,R_2,...,R_r \subseteq C that are "rainbow", meaning that |R_i \cap C_j| < 2 for every i,j, and whose convex hulls all have a common point. All known proofs of this theorem are topological. We present a geometric version of a recent beautiful proof by Blagojević, Matschke, and…
Motivated by topological Tverberg-type problems and by classical results about embeddings (maps without double points), we study the question whether a finite simplicial complex K can be mapped into R^d without triple, quadruple, or, more generally, r-fold points. Specifically, we are interested in maps f from K to R^d that have no r-Tverberg points, i.e., no r-fold points with preimages in r pairwise disjoint simplices of K, and we seek necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of such maps. We present a higher-multiplicity analogue of the completeness of the Van Kampen obstructio…
In 1989 H. Tverberg proposed a quite general conjecture in Discrete geometry, which could be considered as the common basis for many results in Combinatorial geometry and at the same time as a discrete analogue of the common transversal theorems. It implies or contains as the special cases many classical "coincidence" results such as Radon's theorem, Rado's theorem, the Ham-sandwich theorem, the nonembeddability results (of graphs in the plane) etc. The main goal of this note is to verify this conjecture in one new, non-trivial case. We obtain the continuous version of the conjecture. So, it i…

We prove that any continuous map of an N-dimensional simplex Delta_N with colored vertices to a d-dimensional manifold M must map r points from disjoint rainbow faces of Delta_N to the same point in M: For this we have to assume that N \geq (r-1)(d+1), no r vertices of Delta_N get the same color, and our proof needs that r is a prime. A face of Delta_N is a rainbow face if all vertices have different colors. This result is an extension of our recent "new colored Tverberg theorem", the special case of M=R^d. It is also a generalization of Volovikov's 1996 topological Tverberg theorem for maps t…
Birch and Tverberg partitions are closely related concepts from discrete geometry. We show two properties for the number of Birch partitions: Evenness, and a lower bound. This implies the first non-trivial lower bound for the number of Tverberg partitions that holds for arbitrary q, where q is the number of partition blocks. The proofs are based on direct arguments, and do not use the equivariant method from topological combinatorics.
In this paper a generalized topological central point theorem is proved for maps of a simplex to finite-dimensional metric spaces. Similar generalizations of the Tverberg theorem are considered.
