We prove a companion forms theorem for mod l Hilbert modular forms. This work generalises results of Gross and Coleman--Voloch for modular forms over Q, and gives a new proof of their results in many cases. The methods used are completely different to previous work in this area, and rely on modularity lifting theorems and the general theory of deformations of Galois representations.

Let $d$ be a positive fundamental discriminant, and let $\mathcal{C}_{d}$ be the set of isomorphism classes of cubic number fields of discriminant $d$. For each $K \in \mathcal{C}_{d}$, we construct a weight 1 modular form $f_{K}$ with level $3^{\pm 1}d$ and nebentypus $\left( \frac{-3^{\pm 1}d}{\cdot} \right)$. We show that the form $f_{K}$ completely determines the field $K$. Moreover, we show that $\{f_{K} : K \in \mathcal{C}_{d}\}$ is a linearly independent set.
We describe an efficient algorithm to calculate generators of power integral bases in composites of totally real fields with imaginary quadratic fields. Let $K$ be a global field or $\overline{\mathbb Q}$, $F$ a nonzero quadratic form on $K^N$, $N \geq 2$, and $V$ a subspace of $K^N$. We prove the existence of an infinite collection of finite families of small-height maximal totally isotropic subspaces of $(V,F)$ such that each such family spans $V$ as a $K$-vector space. This result generalizes and extends a well known theorem of J. Vaaler and further contributes to the effective study of quadratic forms via height in the general spirit of Cassels' theorem on small zeros of quadratic forms. All bounds on height are explicit.

We completely calculate the Fitting ideal of the classical $p$-ramified Iwasawa module for any abelian extension $K/k$ of totally real fields, using the shifted Fitting ideals recently developed by the second author. This generalizes former results by the first and third authors where we had to assume that only $p$-adic places may ramify in $K/k$. Generalizing work of Gross--Zagier and Schofer on singular moduli, we study the CM values of regularized theta lifts of harmonic Whittaker forms. We compute the archimedian part of the height pairing of arithmetic special divisors and CM cycles on Shimura varieties associated to certain quadratic spaces over an arbitrary totally real base field. As a special case, we obtain an explicit formula for the norms of the CM values of those meromorphic modular forms arising as regularized theta lifts of holomorphic Whittaker forms.
We define a regularized theta lift from SL_2 to orthogonal groups over totally real fields. It takes harmonic `Whittaker forms' to automorphic Green functions and weakly holomorphic Whittaker forms to meromorphic modular forms on orthogonal groups with zeros and poles supported on special divisors, generalizing Borcherds' work on automorphic products. We classify all post-critically finite unicritical polynomials defined over the maximal totally real algebraic extension of ${\mathbb Q}$. Two auxiliary results used in the proof of this result may be of some independent interest. The first is a recursion formula for the $n$-diameter of an interval, which uses properties of Jacobi polynomials. The second is a numerical criterion which allows one to the give a bound on the degree of any algebraic integer having all of its complex embeddings in a real interval of length less than $4$.
