We define a regularized theta lift from SL_2 to orthogonal groups over totally real fields. It takes harmonic `Whittaker forms' to automorphic Green functions and weakly holomorphic Whittaker forms to meromorphic modular forms on orthogonal groups with zeros and poles supported on special divisors, generalizing Borcherds' work on automorphic products. To prove our results we use the spectral expansion of the lift and study its relationship with the cohomological theta lift of Kudla and Millson.
We prove a seesaw identity for theta functions with polynomials, and establish a formula for the corresponding theta contractions. We then use it to determine the restrictions of theta lifts to sub-Grassmannians, with some applications.
This article shows that for unitary dual reductive pairs the first occurrence of theta lift of an irreducible cuspidal automorphic representation is irreducible. It also proves a refined tower property for theta lifts and the involutive property for twisted theta lifts.
We construct theta liftings from half-integral weight weak Maass forms to even integral weight weak Maass forms by using regularized theta integral. Moreover it gives an extension of Niwa's theta liftings on harmonic weak Maass forms. And we obtain the similar results to those by Niwa.
We evaluate regularized theta lifts for Lorentzian lattices in three different ways. In particular, we obtain formulas for their values at special points involving coefficients of mock theta functions. By comparing the different evaluations, we derive recurrences for the coefficients of mock theta functions, such as Hurwitz class numbers, Andrews' spt-function, and Ramanujan's mock theta functions.
Generalizing work of Gross--Zagier and Schofer on singular moduli, we study the CM values of regularized theta lifts of harmonic Whittaker forms. We compute the archimedian part of the height pairing of arithmetic special divisors and CM cycles on Shimura varieties associated to certain quadratic spaces over an arbitrary totally real base field. As a special case, we obtain an explicit formula for the norms of the CM values of those meromorphic modular forms arising as regularized theta lifts of holomorphic Whittaker forms.
We study the theta lifting for real unitary groups and completely determine the theta lifts of discrete series representations. In particular, we show that these theta lifts can be expressed as cohomologically induced representations in the weakly fair range. This extends a result of J.-S. Li in the case of discrete series representations with sufficiently regular infinitesimal character, whose theta lifts can be expressed as cohomologically induced representations in the good range.
We introduce a regularized theta lift for reductive dual pairs of the form $(Sp_4,O(V))$ with $V$ a quadratic vector space over a totally real number field $F$. The lift takes values in the space of $(1,1)$-currents on the Shimura variety attached to $GSpin(V)$, and we prove that its values are cohomologous to currents given by integration on special divisors against automorphic Green functions. In the second part to this paper, we will show how to evaluate the regularized theta lift on differential forms obtained as usual (non-regularized) theta lifts.
We describe the construction and properties of a singular theta lift for the orthogonal group $\SO(2,1)$. We obtain locally harmonic Maass forms in the sense of Bringmann-Kane-Kohnen with singular sets along geodesics in the upper half plane. We consider these forms as currents and derive properties of the Shimura-Shintani correspondence. This work provides extensions of the theta lifts considered by Hoevel and Bringann-Kane-Viazovska.
We study a certain theta lift which maps weight $-2k$ to weight $1/2-k$ harmonic weak Maass forms for $k \in \mathbb{Z}, k \geq 0$, and which is closely related to the classical Shintani lift from weight $2k+2$ to weight $k+3/2$ cusp forms. We compute the Fourier expansion of the theta lift and show that it involves twisted traces of CM values and geodesic cycle integrals of the input function. As an application, we obtain a criterion for the non-vanishing of the central $L$-value of an integral weight newform $G$ in terms of the holomorphicity of the theta lift of a certain harmonic weak Maas…
The first two authors and Kohnen have recently introduced a new class of modular objects called locally harmonic Maass forms, which are annihilated almost everywhere by the hyperbolic Laplacian operator. In this paper, we realize these locally harmonic Maass forms as theta lifts of harmonic weak Maass forms. Using the theory of theta lifts, we then construct examples of (non-harmonic) local Maass forms, which are instead eigenfunctions of the hyperbolic Laplacian almost everywhere.
We define a regularized Shintani theta lift which maps weight $2k+2$ ($k \in \Z, k \geq 0$) harmonic Maass forms for congruence subgroups to (sesqui-)harmonic Maass forms of weight $3/2+k$ for the Weil representation of an even lattice of signature $(1,2)$. We show that its Fourier coefficients are given by traces of CM values and regularized cycle integrals of the input harmonic Maass form. Further, the Shintani theta lift is related via the $ξ$-operator to the Millson theta lift studied in our earlier work. We use this connection to construct $ξ$-preimages of Zagier's weight $1/2$ generating…
We study the theta lifting for real unitary groups and completely determine the theta lifts of tempered representations. In particular, we show that the theta lifts of (limits of) discrete series representations can be expressed as cohomologically induced representations in the weakly fair range. This extends a result of J.-S. Li in the case of discrete series representations with sufficiently regular infinitesimal character, whose theta lifts can be expressed as cohomologically induced representations in the good range.
We use the theta lift to study the multiplicity with which certain automorphic representations of cohomological type occur in a family of congruence covers of an arithmetic manifold. When the family of covers is a so-called `p-adic congruence tower' we obtain sharp asymptotics for the number of representations which occur as lifts. When combined with theorems on the surjectivity of the theta lift due to Howe and Li, and Bergeron, Millson and Moeglin, this allows us to verify certain cases of a conjecture of Sarnak and Xue.
We define weight changing operators for automorphic forms on Grassmannians, i.e., on orthogonal groups, and investigate their basic properties. We then evaluate their action on theta kernels, and prove that theta lifts of modular forms, in which the theta kernel involves polynomials of a special type, have some interesting differential properties.
Let q be an integral quadratic form of signature (2,m+2). We will show that the Siegel theta functions attached to q satisfies certain symmetries. As an application, we prove the symmetries for automorphic forms on the orthogonal group of q closely related to Heegener divisors (Borcherds lifts and automorphic Green functions).
With applications in the Kudla program in mind we employ singular theta lifts for the reductive dual pair $U(p,q)\times U(1,1)$ to construct two different kinds of Green forms for codimension $q$-cycles in Shimura varieties associated to unitary groups. We establish an adjointness result between our singular theta lift and the Kudla-Millson lift. Further, we compare the two Greens forms and obtain modularity for the generating function of the difference of the two Green forms. Finally, we show that the Green forms obtained by the singular theta lift satisfy an eigenvalue equation for the Lapla…
We study the generalized theta lifting between the double covers of split special orthogonal groups, which uses the non-minimal theta representations constructed by Bump, Friedberg and Ginzburg. We focus on the theta liftings of non-generic representations and make a conjecture that gives an upper bound of the first non-zero occurrence of the liftings, depending only on the unipotent orbit. We prove both global and local results that support the conjecture.
In this note, we show that the metaplectic theta correspondence is compatible with the tempered condition by directly estimating the matrix coefficients, without using the classification theorem.
We show that the meromorphic modular forms recently considered by Bringmann and Kane can be obtained as images of regularized theta lifts of Poincaré series under weight raising operators. We use this fact in order to simplify the evaluation of the regularized pairing, also defined by Bringmann and Kane, of these functions with other meromorphic modular forms.
We prove an analogue of the main result of Buzzard and Taylor (Annals of Mathematics 149 (1999), 905-919) for totally real fields in which p is unramified. This can be used to prove certain cases of the strong Artin conjecture over totally real fields.
In this paper we consider Jacobi forms of half-integral index for any positive definite lattice L (classical Jacobi forms from the book of Eichler and Zagier correspond to the lattice A_1=<2>). We give a lot of examples of Jacobi forms of singular and critical weights for root systems using Jacobi theta-series. We describe the Jacobi lifting for Jacobi forms of half-integral indices. In some case it gives additive lifting construction of new reflective modular forms.
We investigate so-called "higher" Siegel theta lifts on Lorentzian lattices in the spirit of Bruinier-Ehlen-Yang and Bruinier-Schwagenscheidt. We give a series representation of the lift in terms of Gauss hypergeometric functions, and evaluate the lift as the constant term of a Fourier series involving the Rankin-Cohen bracket of harmonic Maass forms and theta functions. Using the higher Siegel lifts, we obtain a vector-valued analogue of Mertens' result stating that the Rankin--Cohen bracket of the holomorphic part of a harmonic Maass form of weight $\frac{3}{2}$ and a unary theta function, p…
We consider the Kudla-Millson theta series associated to a quadratic space of signature $(N,N)$. By combining a `see-saw' argument with the Siegel-Weil formula, we show that its (regularized) integral along a torus attached to a totally real field of degree $N$ is the diagonal restriction of an Eisenstein series. It allows us to express the Fourier coefficients of the diagonal restriction as intersection numbers, which generalizes a result of Darmon-Pozzi-Vonk to totally real fields.
In this paper, we give an explicit determination of the theta lifting for symplectic-orthogonal and unitary dual pairs over a nonarchimedean field $F$ of characteristic $0$. We determine when theta lifts of tempered representations are nonzero, and determine the theta lifts in terms of the local Langlands correspondence.
We explain how the work of Johnson-Leung and Roberts on lifting Hilbert modular forms for real quadratic fields to Siegel modular forms can be adapted to imaginary quadratic fields. For this we use archimedean results from Harris, Soudry, Taylor and replace the global arguments of Roberts by the non-vanishing result of Takeda. As an application of our lifting result, we exhibit an abelian surface $B$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, which is not restriction of scalars of an elliptic curve and satisfies the Brumer-Kramer Paramodularity Conjecture.
The classical theta correspondence, based on the Weil representation, allows one to lift automorphic representations on symplectic groups or their double covers to automorphic representations on special orthogonal groups. It is of interest to vary the orthogonal group and describe the behavior in this theta tower (the Rallis tower). In prior work, the authors obtained an extension of the classical theta correspondence to higher degree metaplectic covers of symplectic and special orthogonal groups that is based on the tensor product of the Weil representation with another small representation. …
Recently, Funke and Hofmann constructed a singular theta lift of Borcherds type for the dual reductive pair $U(1,1)\times U(p,q)$, $p,q\geq 1$, the input functions of which are harmonic weak Maass forms of weight $k= 2-p-q$. In the present paper, we give an explicit evaluation of the Fourier-Jacobi expansion of the lift. For this purpose, we adapt a method introduced by Kudla in his paper 'Another product for a Borcherds form'. As an application, in the case $U(p,1)$ we recover a new infinite product expansion associated to a Borcherds form, analogous to the case $O(p,2)$ treated by Kudla.
We derive a precise relation of poles of Eisenstein series associated to the cuspidal datum $χ\otimesσ$ and the lowest occurrence of theta lifts of a cuspidal automorphic representation $σ$ of a unitary group, where $χ$ is a conjugate self-dual character. A key ingredient of the proof is the computation of period integrals of truncated Eisenstein series.
In this paper, we explicitly construct mock modular forms whose shadows are Eisenstein series of arbitrary integral and half-integral weight, level and character at the cusps $\infty$ and $0$. As an application, we give explicit construction of harmonic weak Maass forms which are Hecke eigenforms and are the preimages of $Θ^k, k \in \{ 3, 5, 7\}$ under the shadow operator, where $Θ$ is the classical Jacobi theta function.
Following the approach of B. Roberts, we characterize the non-vanishing of global theta lifts for symplectic-orthogonal dual pairs in terms of its local counterpart. In particular, we replace the temperedness assumption present in Robert's work by a certain weaker assumption, and apply our results to small rank similitude groups. Among our applications is a certain instance of Langlands functorial transfer of a (non-generic) cuspidal automorphic representation of $GSp(4)$ to GL(4).
In this paper, we use regularized theta liftings to construct weak Maass forms weight 1/2 as lifts of weak Maass forms of weight 0. As a special case we give a new proof of some of recent results of Duke, Toth and Imamoglu on cycle integrals of the modular j-invariant and extend these to any congruence subgroup. Moreover, our methods allow us to settle the open question of a geometric interpretation for periods of j along infinite geodesics in the upper half plane. In particular, we give the `central value' of the (non-existing) `L-function' for j. The key to the proofs is the construction of …
We study special values of regularized theta lifts at complex multiplication (CM) points. In particular, we show that CM values of Borcherds products can be expressed in terms of finitely many Fourier coefficients of certain harmonic weak Maaß forms of weight one. As it turns out, these coefficients are logarithms of algebraic integers whose prime ideal factorization is determined by special cycles on an arithmetic curve. Our results imply a conjecture of Duke and Li and give a new proof of the modularity of a certain arithmetic generating series of weight one studied by Kudla, Rapoport and Ya…
We study a new lifting of automorphic representations using the theta representation $Θ$ on the $4$-fold cover of the symplectic group, $\overline{\mathrm{Sp}}_{2r}(\mathbb{A})$. This lifting produces the first examples of CAP representations on higher-degree metaplectic covering groups. Central to our analysis is the identification of the maximal nilpotent orbit associated to $Θ$. We conjecture a natural extension of Arthur's parameterization of the discrete spectrum to $\overline{\mathrm{Sp}}_{2r}(\mathbb{A})$. Assuming this, we compute the effect of our lift on Arthur parameters and show th…
Let $K$ be a local field of residue characteristic $p$. Let $C$ be a curve over $K$ whose minimal proper regular model has totally degenerate semi-stable reduction. Under certain hypotheses, we compute the prime-to-$p$ rational torsion subgroup on the Jacobian of $C$. We also determine divisibility of line bundles on $C$, including rationality of theta characteristics and higher spin structures. These computations utilize arithmetic on the special fiber of $C$.
Using the theta correspondence, we extend the classification of irreducible representations of quasi-split unitary groups (the so-called local Langlands correspondence, which was established in an early paper of Mok) to non quasi-split unitary groups. We also prove that our classification satisfies some good properties, which characterize it uniquely. In particular, this provides an alternative approach to the works of Kaletha-Minguez-Shin-White and Moeglin-Renard.
We explicitly give an inner product formula and a Bessel period formula for theta series on GSp(4), which was studied by Harris, Soudry and Taylor. As a consequence, we prove a non-vanishing of the theta series of small weights and we give a criterion for the non-vanishing of the theta series modulo a prime.
