In this short note I give an alternative proof of a generalization of the result in math.AC/0407464. Namely I show that for most regular rings R, the localization R[1/f] at an element f of R is generated as a module over the ring of differential operators of R by 1/f itself. Due to the greater generality this answers some questions raised in math.AC/0407464. Some further generalizations and a brief discussion of the main technique (Frobenius descent) are also included.
We give a class of examples of vector bundles on a relative smooth projective curve over Spec Z such that for infinitely many prime reductions the bundle has a Frobenius descent, but the restriction to the generic fiber in characteristic zero is not semistable. In the third section of the paper we prove for a large class of varieties (including abelian varieties) that any vector bundle with this Frobenius descent property is generically semistable.
In this paper we consider Artinian modules over power series rings endowed with a Frobenius map. We describe a method for finding the set of all prime annihilators of submodules which are preserved by the given Frobenius map and on which the Frobenius map is not nilpotent. This extends the algorithm by Karl Schwede and the first author, which solved this problem for submodules of the injective hull of the residue field. The Matlis dual of this problem asks for the radical annihilators of quotients of free modules by submodules preserved by a given Frobenius near-splitting, and the same method …
We develop a theory of G-dimension for modules over local homomorphisms which encompasses the classical theory of G-dimension for finite modules over local rings. As an application, we prove that a local ring R of characteristic p is Gorenstein if and only if it possesses a nonzero finite module of finite projective dimension that has finite G-dimension when considered as an R-module via some power of the Frobenius endomorphism of R. We also prove results that track the behavior of Gorenstein properties of local homomorphisms under (de)composition.
We investigate commutative Noetherian rings of prime characteristic such that the Frobenius functor applied to any injective module is again injective. We characterize the class of one-dimensional local rings with this property and show that it includes all one-dimensional F-pure rings.
The purpose of this paper is to describe several applications of finiteness properties of $F$-finite $F$-modules recently discovered by M. Hochster to the study of Frobenius maps on injective hulls, Frobenius near-splittings and to the nature of morphisms of $F$-finite $F$-modules. Among the results in the paper we show that morphisms of $F$-finite $F$-modules have a particularly simple form, and we show that certain Frobenius near-splittings have finitely many compatible submodules, thus generalizing a result of M. Blickle and G. Böckle to the non-$F$-finite case.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring. A quasi-Gorenstein $R$-module is an $R$-module such that the grade of the module and the projective dimension of the module are equal and the canonical module of the module is isomorphic to the module itself. After discussing properties of finitely generated quasi-Gorenstein modules, it is shown that this definition allows for a characterization of diagonal matrices of maximal rank over a Noetherian factorial domain $R$ extending a theorem of Frobenius and Stickelberger to modules of projective dimension 1 over a commutative Noetherian factorial domain.
We construct normal hypersurfaces whose local cohomology modules have infinitely many associated primes. These include unique factorization domains of characteristic zero with rational singularities, as well as F-regular unique factorization domains of positive characteristic. As a consequence, we answer a question on the associated primes of Frobenius powers of ideals, which arose from the localization problem in tight closure theory.
The main purposes of this paper are to establish and exploit the result that, over a complete (Noetherian) local ring $R$ of prime characteristic for which the Frobenius homomorphism $f$ is finite, the appropriate restrictions of the Matlis-duality functor provide an equivalence between the category of left modules over the Frobenius skew polynomial ring $R[x,f]$ that are Artinian as $R$-modules and the category of right $R[x,f]$-modules that are Noetherian as $R$-modules.
The study of Frobenius actions on local cohomology modules over a local ring of prime characteristic has interesting connections with the theory of tight closure. This paper establishes new connections by developing the notion of relative Frobenius actions on local cohomology. As an application, we show that a ring has $F$-nilpotent singularities if and only if the tight closure of every parameter ideal is equal to its Frobenius closure.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring of prime characteristic $p$ and $f:R\to R$ the Frobenius ring homomorphism. For $e\ge 1$ let $R^{(e)}$ denote the ring $R$ viewed as an $R$-module via $f^e$. Results of Peskine, Szpiro, and Herzog state that for finitely generated modules $M$, $M$ has finite projective dimension if and only if $\operatorname{Tor}_i^R(R^{(e)},M)=0$ for all $i>0$ and all (equivalently, infinitely many) $e\ge 1$. We prove this statement holds for arbitrary modules using the theory of flat covers and minimal flat resolutions.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring of prime characteristic. The purpose of this paper is to provide a short proof of G. Lyubeznik's extension of a result of R. Hartshorne and R. Speiser about a module over the skew polynomial ring $R[x,f]$ (associated to $R$ and the Frobenius homomorphism $f$, in the indeterminate $x$) that is both $x$-torsion and Artinian over $R$.
Let $(R,m)$ be a Noetherian local ring of characteristic $p>0$. We introduce and study $F$-full and $F$-anti-nilpotent singularities, both are defined in terms of the Frobenius actions on the local cohomology modules of $R$ supported at the maximal ideal. We prove that if $R/(x)$ is $F$-full or $F$-anti-nilpotent for a nonzerodivisor $x\in R$, then so is $R$. We use these results to obtain new cases on the deformation of $F$-injectivity.
If $X$ is a smooth scheme over a perfect field of characteristic $p$, and if $\sD_X$ is the sheaf of differential operators on $X$ [EGAIV], it is well known that giving an action of $\sD_X$ on an $\sO_X$-module $\sE$ is equivalent to giving an infinite sequence of $\sO_X$-modules descending $\sE$ via the iterates of the Frobenius endomorphism of $X$. We show that this result can be generalized to any infinitesimal deformation $f : X \to S$ of a smooth morphism in characteristic $p$, endowed with Frobenius liftings. We also show that it extends to adic formal schemes such that $p$ belongs to an…
The Frobenius depth denoted by F-depth defined by Hartshorne-Speiser in 1977 and later by Lyubeznik in 2006, in a different way, for rings of positive characteristic. The first aim of the present paper is to compare the F-depth with formal grade and reprove some results of Lyubeznik using formal local cohomology. Then the endomorphism rings of local cohomology modules will be considered. As an application, we reprove the results due to Huneke-Koh in positive characteristic and Lyubeznik in characteristic zero on the annihilators of local cohomology modules.
Let R be a commutative Noetherian ring of prime characteristic and M be an x-divisible right R[x,f]-module that is Noetherian as R-module. We give an affirmative answer to the question of Sharp and Yoshino in the case where R is semi-local and prove that the set of graded annihilators of R[x,f]-homomorphic images of M is finite. We also give a counterexample in the general case.
This paper is concerned with the tight closure of an ideal in a commutative Noetherian local ring $R$ of prime characteristic $p$. Several authors, including R. Fedder, K.-i. Watanabe, K. E. Smith, N. Hara and F. Enescu, have used the natural Frobenius action on the top local cohomology module of such an $R$ to good effect in the study of tight closure, and this paper uses that device. The main part of the paper develops a theory of what are here called 'special annihilator submodules' of a left module over the Frobenius skew polynomial ring associated to $R$; this theory is then applied in th…
We study commutative algebra arising from generalised Frobenius numbers. The $k$-th (generalised) Frobenius number of natural numbers $(a_1,\dots,a_n)$ is the largest natural number that cannot be written as a non-negative integral combination of $(a_1,\dots,a_n)$ in $k$ distinct ways. Suppose that $L$ is the lattice of integers points of $(a_1,\dots,a_n)^{\perp}$. Taking cue from the concept of lattice modules due to Bayer and Sturmfels, we define generalised lattice modules $M_L^{(k)}$ whose Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity captures the $k$-th Frobenius number of $(a_1,\dots,a_n)$. We study th…
In this paper, we define and discuss higher-dimensional and absolute versions of symmetric, Frobenius, and quasi-Frobenius algebras. In particular, we compare these with the relative notions defined by Scheja and Storch. We also prove the validity of codimension two-argument for modules over a coherent sheaf of algebras with a $2$-canonical module, generalizing a result of the author.
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m},K)$ be a local ring, and let $M$ be an $R$-module of finite length. We study asymptotic invariants, $β^F_i(M,R),$ defined by twisting with Frobenius the free resolution of $M$. This family of invariants includes the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity ($e_{HK}(\mathfrak{m},R)=β^F_0(K,R)$). We discuss several properties of these numbers that resemble the behavior of the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity. Furthermore, we study when the vanishing of $β^F_i(M,R)$ implies that $M$ has finite projective dimension. In particular, we give a complete characterization of the vanishing of $β^F_i(M,R)$…
Given a local ring of positive prime characteristic there is a natural Frobenius action on its local cohomology modules with support at its maximal ideal. In this paper we study the local rings for which the local cohomology modules have only finitely many submodules invariant under the Frobenius action. In particular we prove that F-pure Gorenstein local rings as well as the face ring of a finite simplicial complex localized or completed at its homogeneous maximal ideal have this property. We also introduce the notion of an anti-nilpotent Frobenius action on an Artinian module over a local ri…
We give sufficient conditions for a Frobenius category to be equivalent to the category of Gorenstein projective modules over an Iwanaga-Gorenstein ring. We then apply this result to the Frobenius category of special Cohen-Macaulay modules over a rational surface singularity, where we show that the associated stable category is triangle equivalent to the singularity category of a certain discrepant partial resolution of the given rational singularity. In particular, this produces uncountably many Iwanaga-Gorenstein rings of finite GP type. We also apply our method to representation theory, obt…

Let R be a ring of polynomials in a finite number of variables over a perfect field k of characteristic p>0 and let F:R\to R be the Frobenius map of R, i.e. F(r)=r^p. We explicitly describe an R-module isomorphism Hom_R(F_*(M),N)\cong Hom_R(M,F^*(N)) for all R-modules M and N. Some recent and potential applications are discussed.
Let $R$ be a ring of prime characteristic $p$, and let $F^e_* R$ denote $R$ viewed as an $R$-module via the $e$th iterated Frobenius map. Given a surjective map $ϕ: F^e_* R \to R$ (for example a Frobenius splitting), we exhibit an algorithm which produces all the $ϕ$-compatible ideals. We also explore a variant of this algorithm under the hypothesis that $ϕ$ is not necessarily a Frobenius splitting (or even surjective). This algorithm, and the original, have been implemented in Macaulay2.
It is proved that a module $M$ over a Noetherian ring $R$ of positive characteristic $p$ has finite flat dimension if there exists an integer $t\ge 0$ such that $\operatorname{Tor}_i^R(M, {}^{f^{e}}\!R)=0$ for $t\le i\le t+\dim R$ and infinitely many $e$. This extends a result of Herzog, who proved it when $M$ is finitely generated, and strengthens a result of the third author and Webb in the case $M$ is arbitrary. It is also proved that when $R$ is a Cohen-Macaulay local ring, it suffices that the Tor vanishing holds for one $e\ge \log_{p}e(R)$, where $e(R)$ is the multiplicity of $R$.
A basic question for any property of quasi--coherent sheaves on a scheme $X$ is whether the property is local, that is, it can be defined using any open affine covering of $X$. Locality follows from the descent of the corresponding module property: for (infinite dimensional) vector bundles and Drinfeld vector bundles, it was proved by Kaplansky's technique of dévissage already in \cite[II.\S3]{RG}. Since vector bundles coincide with $\aleph_0$-restricted Drinfeld vector bundles, a question arose in \cite{EGPT} of whether locality holds for $κ$-restricted Drinfeld vector bundles for each infini…
Let $R$ be a standard graded algebra over an $F$-finite field of characteristic $p > 0$. Let $ϕ:R\to R$ be the Frobenius endomorphism. For each finitely generated graded $R$-module $M$, let ${}^ϕ\!M$ be the abelian group $M$ with the $R$-module structure induced by the Frobenius endomorphism. The $R$-module ${}^ϕ\!M$ has a natural grading given by $\text{deg} x=j$ if $x\in M_{jp+i}$ for some $0\le i \le p-1$. In this paper, we prove that $R$ is Koszul if and only if there exists a non-zero finitely generated graded $R$-module $M$ such that $\text{reg}_R\,{}^ϕ\!M <\infty$. This result supplies …
For a commutative ring $R$ of characteristic $p$, let $ϕ: R \to R$ be the Frobenius homomorphism and let $^{ϕ^r}R$ denote the $R$-module structure on $R$ defined via the $r$-th power of the Frobenius. We show that the Tor functor against the Frobenius module, $\Tor^R_*(-, {^{ϕ^r}}R)$, is rigid for a certain class of depth zero rings which includes rings that are not complete intersection. We also show that $\Tor^R_*(-, {^{ϕ^r}}R)$ is not rigid (non-vacuously) when $\depth (R) >0$ and $r$ is large enough. This answers a question of Avramov and Miller: does rigidity of $\Tor^R_*(-, {^{ϕ^r}}R)$ h…
Let $(R,\mathfrak m)$ be a local (Noetherian) ring of dimension $d$ and $M$ a finite length $R$-module with free resolution $G_\bullet$. De Stefani, Huneke, and Núñez-Betancourt explored two questions about the properties of resolutions of $M$. First, in characteristic $p>0$, what vanishing conditions on the Frobenius Betti numbers, $β_i^F(M, R) : = \lim_{e \to \infty} λ(H_i(F^e(G_\bullet)))/p^{ed}$, force pd$_R M < \infty$. Second, if pd$_R M = \infty $, does this force $d+2$nd or higher syzygies of $M$ to have infinite length. For the first question, they showed, under rather restrictive hyp…
We give a self-contained exposition of the proof of faithfully flat descent for projectivity of modules. This fills a gap in the proof given in the literature.
We define the Frobenius limit of a module over a ring of prime characteristic to be the limit of the normalized Frobenius direct images in a certain Grothendieck group. When a finite group acts on a polynomial ring, we calculate this limit for all the modules over the twisted group algebra that are free over the polynomial ring; we also calculate the Frobenius limit for the restriction of these to the ring of invariants. As an application, we generalize the description of the generalized $F$-signature of a ring of invariants by the second author and Nakajima to the modular case.
This is a survey on the relation between homological properties of the Frobenius endomorphism and finiteness of various homological dimensions of the ring or of modules over it, such as global dimension and projective dimension. We begin with Kunz's surprising result in 1969 that the regularity of a Noetherian local ring is equivalent to the flatness of its Frobenius endomorphism, as well as the subsequent generalizations to the module setting by Peskine and Szpiro and continue up through the recent flurry of results in the last five years. An attempt is made to include proofs whenever feasibl…
It is proved that a module $M$ over a Noetherian local ring $R$ of prime characteristic and positive dimension has finite flat dimension if Tor$_i^R({}^e R, M)=0$ for dim $R$ consecutive positive values of $i$ and infinitely many $e$. Here ${}^e R$ denotes the ring $R$ viewed as an $R$-module via the $e$th iteration of the Frobenius endomorphism. In the case $R$ is Cohen-Macualay, it suffices that the Tor vanishing above holds for a single $e\geq \log_p e(R)$, where $e(R)$ is the multiplicity of the ring. This improves a result of D. Dailey, S. Iyengar, and the second author, as well as genera…
In this paper, we show that for an $F$-pure local ring $(R,\m)$, all local cohomology modules $H_{\m}^i(R)$ have finitely many Frobenius compatible submodules. This answers positively an open question raised by F.Enescu and M.Hochster. We also prove that if $(R,\m)$ is excellent and is $F$-pure on the punctured spectrum, then all local cohomology modules have finite length in the category of $R$-modules with Frobenius action. Finally, we show that the property that all $H_{\m}^(R)$ have finitely many Frobenius compatible submodules passes to localizations.
Let u be a local homomorphism of noetherian local rings forming part of a commutative square vf=gu. We give some conditions on the square which imply that u is formally smooth. This result encapsulates a variety of (apparently unrelated) results in commutative algebra greatly improving some of them: Greco's theorem on descent of quasi-excellence property by finite surjective morphisms, Kunz's characterization of regular local rings in positive characteristic by means of the Frobenius homomorphism (and in fact the relative version obtained by Andre and Radu), etc. In the second part of the pape…
Let $F^n(-)$ be the Frobenius functor of Peskine and Szpiro. In this note, we show that the maximal Cohen-Macaulayness of $F^n(M)$ forces $M$ to be free, provided $M$ has a rank. We apply this result to obtain several Frobenius related criteria for the Gorensteinness of a local ring $R$, one of which improves a previous characterization due to Hanes and Huneke. We also establish a special class of finite length modules over Cohen-Macaulay rings, which are rigid against Frobenius.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian Cohen-Macaulay local ring that has positive dimension and prime characteristic. Li proved that the tensor product of a finitely generated non-free $R$-module $M$ with the Frobenius endomorphism ${}^{φ^n}\!R$ is not maximal Cohen-Macaulay provided that $M$ has rank and $n\gg 0$. We replace the rank hypothesis with the weaker assumption that $M$ is locally free on the minimal prime ideals of $R$. As a consequence, we obtain, if $R$ is a one-dimensional non-regular complete reduced local ring that has a perfect residue field and prime characteristic, then ${}^{…
Over a Noetherian, local ring R of prime characteristic p, the Frobenius functor F induces a diagonalizable map on certain quotients of rational Grothendieck groups. This leads to an explicit formula for the Dutta multiplicity, and it is shown that a weaker version of Serre's vanishing conjecture holds if only chi(F(X)) = p^{dim R}chi(X) for all bounded complexes X of finitely generated, projective modules with finite length homology.
In two recent papers, the author has developed a theory of graded annihilators of left modules over the Frobenius skew polynomial ring over a commutative Noetherian ring $R$ of prime characteristic $p$, and has shown that this theory is relevant to the theory of test elements in tight closure theory. One result of that work was that, if $R$ is local and the $R$-module structure on the injective envelope $E$ of the simple $R$-module can be extended to a structure as a torsion-free left module over the Frobenius skew polynomial ring, then $R$ is $F$-pure and has a tight closure test element. One…
We study ascent and descent of the Golod property along an algebra retract. We characterise trivial extensions of modules, fibre products of rings to be Golod rings. We present a criterion for a graded module over a graded affine algebra of characteristic zero to be a Golod module.
We investigate the behavior of Cohen-Macaulay defect undertaking tensor product with a perfect module. Consequently, we study the perfect defect of a module. As an application, we connect to associated prime ideals of tensor products.
